RECRUITER & CAREER COACH DIRECTORYA TOOL FOR FIRMS AND INDIVIDUALS

2 | MNCPA RECRUITER & CAREER COACH DIRECTORY 2014

Dear MNCPA member,

Welcome to the MNCPA’s new Recruiter & Career Coach Directory. Over the years, companies

and fi rms have asked us to connect them with coaching and leadership development

resources that can help their executives and employees become the best they can be. They’ve

also asked us to connect them with professional recruiters who can help them fi nd just the

right candidate for a job opening.

Similarly, individual members have requested information about recruiters and career coaches

who can help them develop their skills and build the career they always envisioned.

Based on those needs, we created the MNCPA Recruiter & Career Coach Directory to help hiring

managers and individuals alike. The directory includes a list of staffi ng and recruiting resources

that specialize in fi lling fi nancial and accounting positions, and career coaches who understand

CPAs and the fi rms and companies that hire them.

Best wishes as you continue to build even stronger teams in your organization, and an even

stronger future for your own career. We hope you fi nd this resource helpful.

Sincerely,

Betsy K. Adrian

MNCPA president

Sometimes it feels like the only way to get ahead in this competitive world of ours is to do it all, and be good at it all, too. Because of the added importance for CPAs to be accurate in their technical work, they may feel even more pressure to be good in all parts of their jobs and lives.

Th is notion of needing to be good at everything was ingrained in the American psyche from a very young age. In school, teachers impressed upon us the importance of being “well rounded,” suggesting that a perfect student excels in every course, not just a few of them.

While this defi nition of success may have resulted in a higher GPA, its value as a measurement of success in the professional world is completely diff erent. No longer does it pay off to be good at everything at work. Instead of trying to be good at everything, it’s time to instead take a look at your strengths and weaknesses (yes, even you have weaknesses).

Focus on your strengths

I attended a workshop titled “Strengths Based Leadership,” which was founded on the principles in “StrengthsFinder” by Tom Rath. Th e workshop addressed our obsession with our own weaknesses, and the way this causes us to neglect our strengths. Th is neglect of strengths can eventually cause us to reach a point where we no longer recognize our own strengths. Pretty soon, everything around us is mediocre. Even aft er all of the work I’ve done on personal branding, it had never occurred to me to look at our professional lives from this perspective.

I learned that I, and almost everyone I know, have been making the same mistake for years. When we learn about something that we’re not particularly good at, what do we do? We work painstakingly hard to try and improve ourselves. Th is is a huge mistake. Instead, we should accept that we aren’t good at everything — gasp, I know — and choose to focus on our strengths.

When you waste time trying to improve your weaker skills, you’re failing to capitalize on your strengths. You may improve your weaknesses, but what makes you unique as a professional and a human being on earth are your strengths. If you spend your life trying to be good at everything, you will never be great at anything.

Th e strongest leaders I’ve known have invested in their own strengths and delegated tasks that are their weaknesses to others.

Stop trying to be good at everythingFocusing on your strengths leads to the strongest, greatest youBy Margaret Smith, personal coach, UXL Consulting

Ready to embark on this exciting path toward the strongest, greatest you? Here’s an easy checklist to use as a guide.

How to follow the

strengths-driven path

1. Repeat and believe the following statement: “I do not have to be good at everything.”

2. Start the process of observing your strengths and weaknesses, whether through conversations with peers, an assessment or refl ection.

3. Pick a few of your strengths and consider the places in your life where they can be put to best use.

4. Make a list of the ways that you can increase the visibility of your strengths at work, and make an action plan to see your changes through.

5. Th ink big, even if it’s scary. You may need to change your job, say “no” or “yes” more oft en, or move to a diff erent place in your fi rm or company.

As a fi nal thought: Stop trying to be well rounded. Build a well-rounded team instead.

Keep up the motivation and hard work. Most importantly, have fun.

Why you should date a recruiterThe benefi ts for your company, and for youBy Dave Schneider, director of Recruiting, SNI Financial

Does this sound like you? Overworked and underpaid professional (OUP) seeks relationship with great company and, specifi cally, a wonderful boss who enjoys long, collaborative discussions regarding ongoing and upcoming projects. Someone who will value my professional contributions, and challenge me to bring my best every day, and reward me monetarily for the consistent work I generate week in and week out.

Or maybe this is you: Frazzled understaff ed manager (FUM) seeks highly competent staff member to offl oad multiple technical projects, bring a cheery disposition to the team and offi ce, and to handle a multitude of routine, and not so routine, tasks to free up manager for strategic development projects.

If you see yourself in either one of these profi les, then the time just might be right for you to consider working with a recruiter. Th ese examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Th ere are other situations for which a recruiter can be helpful. Read on to learn why deciding to enter into a long-lasting relationship with a recruiter can be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

More than meets the eye

Suppose you are the hiring manager, or FUM, noted above. And now you’re suddenly in a bind because you just lost a key team member, Tina, whose technical skills and disposition made her a star employee. While most solid recruiters can fi nd candidates with the proper pedigree for your open role, the key factors here are the intangible skills that Tina embodied. She could work very well across business units and with just about any personality type in your organization. Th e person helping you fi nd a replacement for her must be someone who understands you and your organization in a very real and personal manner.

Let’s assume that, in the same scenario, you (the manager) are 15 years deep into your own career, and your current job is the third you’ve held in as many companies. For both of your prior job changes, you used a recruiter — a diff erent recruiter each time — and you haven’t kept in touch

with either one. But now you have a very important role to fi ll that requires the right skills and personality.

Had you maintained a long-term, active relationship with your recruiter(s), you would have at least one at the ready who could quickly assess your needs and who would already understand the unique nature of your hiring situation. Th is recruiter would be well situated to fi ll your role quickly and accurately — two things that you badly need right now.

As crucial as this replacement is to you, a good recruiter relationship may have prevented you from losing your favorite and most important employee in the fi rst place. What you may not realize is the real reason Tina left . What she told you and the whole truth may not exactly sync up, as is oft en the case. Tina said she left for a promotional opportunity, but she really left for a 15 percent pay increase.

In fact, Tina’s salary fell below the current market rate for her skills and experience

level. But you thought that because you consulted your HR department (which may rely on a variety of national salary surveys) that her pay was adequate for her performance and role. A recruiter might have told you otherwise.

In any given local market, experienced recruiters have their fi nger on the pulse of local salary trends, better than just about anyone, and can therefore be the best source for up-to-the-minute pay information. Recruiters see what companies are off ering and what they might ultimately pay people just like Tina.

There are other reasons to

work with a recruiter. Here

are just a few:

Recruiters spot talent before you need it: If, as a hiring manager, you know that you will add staff in the next three to six months, you can broach this topic with your recruiter now. Recruiters see a lot of candidates over the course of a month or two. When recruiters know what you are looking for, they can alert you to a top-notch “A” player when they meet her. Recruiters also know passive candidates who are only interested in making a move to a really great company (yours) with a really great boss (you) who will pay what the market demands.

When a recruiter fi nds your perfect candidate, you will be in a position to bring that candidate on board and have the information you need to support hiring that candidate when they are available, not just when you are ready. Th e best companies hire great people when they are available, and fi t them into their organizations. Employee turnover is inevitable, and bringing on board a top candidate can even provide the impetus for a lesser performing employee to consider a change on their own. Two birds — one stone.

Finding talent takes work and a thick skin: Recruiting is a hard job, especially for busy managers. Recruiters make a lot of calls and plow a lot of ground. Rejection is the norm, and building a strong business takes grit, determination and a whole lot of stamina. It takes a lot of work to fi nd the right employee, and recruiters dedicate all of their time and energy to doing just that — so you don’t have to.

You might one day be the candidate: On the fl ip side of the employer coin, you may one day fi nd yourself suddenly out of a job.

You will be miles ahead if you have an ongoing relationship with a great recruiter who will work tirelessly on your behalf to fi nd your next opportunity. Recruiters enjoy working with people they know well, and especially with those who have rewarded them in the past with business.

A recruiter can help you decide if change is right: In the modern work world, it is highly likely that you will change jobs fi ve, six or even more times throughout your career. While taking advice from co-workers, friends and family can be helpful, your recruiter is in the best position to help you assess the right timing and reasons for a change. Not every job off er is good for your career, and not every job change makes sense.

A recruiter can help you tell your story: Recruiters look at hundreds of résumés every year, and they know good (and bad) ones when they see them, oft en forming critical conclusions about your résumé in a matter of seconds.

Too many jobs and you get branded a job hopper. Job changes that don’t make sense — that show no career advancement — can be diffi cult to explain to prospective employers. A good recruiter will give you the straight scoop on whether it’s time for a job change and how that will look. Remember that, throughout your career, you are building a story about yourself. Ultimately, you want to have a nice story to tell fi ve, 10 or even more years from now.

Recruiters see the jobs that never get advertised: While recruiters don’t have a lead on every good job in town, they are oft en connected with positions that never get advertised. By having

your ideal job known to a recruiter, you are in a great position to land that position when it comes along. You don’t have time to continually search for the perfect job, but recruiters do.

Keep yourself top of mind

Th roughout their career, many people cycle back and forth multiple times between being a recruiter’s client and being a candidate. Circumstances change, and for a wide variety of reasons. By cultivating a relationship with a recruiter or two, you will be top of mind. Recruiters are no diff erent from anyone else in this regard: Th ey like to work with people who have been loyal to them, and who have given them their business and attention.

So, the next time your phone rings and it’s me or another recruiter on the line, take a moment to consider your recruiter relationship status. Maybe it’s time to start that relationship. Pick up the phone. Take a chance. It may be the start of something beautiful.
