Dear Friends,

Thank you for taking the time to learn how John Carroll High School is celebrating our past, embracing our present, and

cultivating our future. The school is proud to welcome you to the first publication of its kind: enjoy this combination of a year

in review, alumni updates, donor recognition, gift opportunities, application information, and recognition of those dear to our

school.

As you know, John Carroll is a private, Catholic-Christian, college-preparatory high school which is both traditional and modern.

We have a legacy of over a hundred years of educating youth but are continually updating the curriculum and facilities to

provide instruction of the highest caliber.

Please read on and learn about John Carroll High School: from our generous Annual Giving Campaign donors; opportunities to

support your school; impressive updates; alumni news; a report on our academics, extracurricular offerings, and state-of-the-

art technology to the faith-based values and standards that we instill in our students.

Warm regards,

“Several factors motivated Sr. Imelda and me to design a shield for JCHS. The only symbol used

for the school at that time was the ram, which was a nice mascot for sports, but did not reflect

other aspects of the school. Because our sisters, the Adrian Dominican Sisters, had ministered in

the school since its opening in the 1930’s, we felt that it was important to leave a visible sign of

their presence. We also wanted to incorporate some of the history of the school. Consequently,

we looked at the shields of the Order of Preachers (which is the official name for the Dominican

Order), Pope John XXIII (the John in John Carroll), Bishop Coleman Carroll of Miami, (the Carroll

of John Carroll), and the Diocese of Palm Beach. Imelda is an artist with a great eye for design,

so she could position the various parts chosen from each shield into a pleasing arrangement. The

finished product was definitely the combined efforts of both of us – my ideas and her execution.

So, our shield was born!”

- Sister Jean Crane, May 2010, quoted on how the original JCHS shield was born

EMBRACING our past...

UPDATED VISUAL IDENITY LAUNCHED:One element of our theme for the 2010-2011 year includes updating our John Carroll High School

visual identity. Through this year-long process, the school images, logo, crest, seal, ram, colors, fonts, etc. have been professionally recreated. The goal of this project is to preserve the history of the school’s

icons, establish uniform graphic standards, update the school’s visual identity, and keep pace with technology by creating images in high resolution media.

It has been a pleasure learning the meaning behind the symbols of the school, celebrating John Carroll High School’s original graphic designers, and establishing standards that will remain with the school for its future. We hope you join with us in

celebrating our past, embracing our present, and cultivating our future.

“I won’t ever forget the wonderful friends I’ve made here at John Carroll. I found my classes challenging’ but, I love a challenge. Compared to my other schools, JC is very hands-on with schoolwork helping me to remember it better. Mrs. Easom

Cultivating our FUTURE

To prepare students fully for a post-secondary education, John Carroll equips students with the tools they need for success-- a comprehensive, challenging, college preparatory curriculum with classes to cater to the individual student’s abilities. A small class size average of 24 students allows for individualized attention while specialty classes are consistent with society’s competitive climate.

The John Carroll curriculum not only furnishes students with a solid core education but also affords them the option of creating a four-year plan that incorporates their individual interests, whether they lie in business and finance, computer science, the arts, or foreign language. Advanced placement (AP) classes are available to offer an extra challenge for students excelling in different areas. JCHS is partnered with Indian River State College to provide dual enrollment classes that not only satisfy JCHS requirements but also allow students to earn college credit that is transferrable to most colleges and universities.

The PASS System is a real-time online portal for monitoring student grades, which are entered by each teacher. Both parents and students have access to PASS, and it is password protected to ensure privacy. PASS allows even the busiest parents to stay updated on their child’s grades.

Classes offered include Computer Applications, Computer Keyboarding, Web Page Design, Graphics Animation, Graphics Animation Advanced, Dual Enrollment College Computing

One of the school’s goals for the 2010-2011 year is to update the Media Lab located in the school library. Thirty new Dell PC computers would update the lab and allow computer usage for various resources. This Media Lab would allow students who do not have a computer at home to have access to necessary computer equipment and applications. Teachers often require typed school papers, internet research, power point presentations, and projects that utilize computers.

The updated lab would also allow teachers to bring their classes in the same facility to teach simulations instruction. Examples of this work could include SAT prep, biology research, online history lessons, new computer math applications, and more.

Technology Update

The John Carroll High School PR Club strives to bring the latest student news, photos, and videos to the school and community quickly and reliably. Student members are responsible for producing a weekly show that will be viewed in homeroom once a week. The video will then be posted on the school’s YouTube site. In addition, members of the club may produce informational, comical, or interesting videos featuring JCHS for numerous purposes. Student members will also photograph school events, theatre productions, accomplishments, assemblies, etc. These photos will be used for press releases, may be posted on the school’s Flickr page, and may be used for publication purposes.

Public Relations Club

John Carroll’s music, art, and drama departments provide a variety of avenues for students to explore the arts and offer opportunities to experience learning outside the conventional classroom. It is these experiences that lead to the ideal, well-rounded education. Students with a flair for the creative will find a variety of outlets available to them.

Music class is offered before school and offers availability for everyone to participate.

The drama department produces two annual shows: the fall play and the spring musical. During the summer there were also several weeks of theatre camp offered.

The art house is nestled on the back edge of campus among the trees and is home to the art classes and art club. Students have the opportunity to choose classes such as two-dimensional art and ceramics.

John Carroll is a school that promotes Christian values and the teachings of the Catholic Church. We welcome students regardless of religious background or affiliation. It is our core belief that by educating the students in the spirit of Catholic Christianity and through the grace of Jesus Christ, we are able to provide a spiritual foundation that they will take with them for the rest of their lives. Students are required to complete a minimum of four years of religion classes. These classes not only educate students in Roman Catholic doctrine but also expose them to other religions as well. Students attend at least one spiritual retreat a year

through which they become closer to God and to each other.

Our students also regularly participate in the liturgical aspects of the Catholic faith. There are regularly scheduled masses and prayer or penance services providing the opportunity to integrate faith into their scholastic

education and daily life.

By sharing their time with others, John Carroll students learn the importance of giving back to their community through service. Every year, each John Carroll student is required to perform at least ten hours of community service.

For the past four years, John Carroll students have had the privilege of building Habitat for Humanity homes in the area. We look forward to continuing this excellent tradition. The students are also involved with a diverse grouping of organizations that range from local environmental causes like the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center to international causes that offer aid to the victims of genocide in Darfur.

The 2010 Alpha group with the The Most Reverend Bishop Gerald Barbarito.

For the past four years, John Carroll students have had the privilege of building Habitat for Humanity homes in the area. We look forward to con-tinuing this excellent tradition. These are pictures from the 2010 Habitat build.

JCHS students hosted a clothing drive for Hope’s Closet 4 Children, a ministry of GraceWay Village, that supports the homeless in Fort Pierce.

Mrs. Cross led the JCHS students to help participate in the 2010 Empty Bowl Project. Students hand painted individual bowls that were later sold at the Fort Pierce Farmers’ Market. The profits from the bowls went to help fund food kitchens.

John Carroll helped me develop into the person I am today by allowing me to surround myself with good, honest friends while the school’s religious influences helped put my life on the right track.

–LAURA RECOR

I am truly blessed to have been a student at JCHS. I believe that the faculty and staff really care for the students and want nothing more than to see them succeed. I would encourage the community to donate to John Carroll High School because it is truly a fantastic institution and is dedicated to helping its

students learn everything they need to be prepared for college. - VICTORIA DELAPORTE,
