DESCRIPTION

I created the first viewbook the university has ever had in 2008. It has evolved slightly as I have earned their trust as the sole-campus-creative.

Did you hear about the HNU Construction club? They’re having

a BUILD this Saturday. You should

come!!

Some people will tell you that knowledge is power, and, to some extent, that’s true. But the ability to think and use knowledge is what is empowering.

The Sisters of Holy Names are both the heart and the backbone of the University. The foundation for HNU was set in place in 1868 by an adventuresome group of Holy Names sisters who journeyed to Oakland from Montreal, Canada. Their mission then was the same as it is today: to educate and develop the “whole” person and to work for positive social change.

The methodology is inclusive and welcoming, never dogmatic or restrictive. The liberal Holy Names environment and curriculum encour-age students to explore their own beliefs more deeply and to understand the beliefs of others more fully. Students of all faiths are welcome to grow together.

AdmissionsCampus and Beyond

I just got us tickets for the A’s/Giants game this weekend.

Batter Up!

We recognize that the educational journey must also include opportunities for fun. Our campus is ideally located near the excitement of San Francisco, the action of numerous professional sports teams (A’s, Raiders, Warriors, Sharks, 49ers, Giants and the EarthQuakes), and the funky culture of Berkeley. The HNU campus is a safe and lively home base that puts the bright lights of the big city within your reach.

We encourage you to climb the 106 steps to the top level of our hillside campus and look out from the balcony in front of McLean Chapel. You can see virtually the whole San Francisco Bay Area spread out in front of you. It is a spectacular sight.

The value of our location, however, goes beyond the priceless view or the scenic beauty of the campus. Attending HNU allows you to live and learn in one of the most desirable areas in the United States. Cultural, intellectual, and recreational activities abound in every direction from HNU’s location in the Oakland Hills.

AdmissionsFaculty & Learning Environment

Hey, study group for Bio at 8 on the 4th floor lounge. Bring snacks!

Our faculty are experts in their fields with impressive academic backgrounds. Most of them have earned doctorates and many have published scholarly articles and books. More importantly, though, all faculty actively incorporate the latest research in their fields into each class they teach. In fact, HNU faculty are leaders in cutting-edge course design. The typical class is interactive, interdisciplinary and technologically advanced.

Most of your classes will consist of 15-18 students. We provide academic support and study skills training through the Student Success Center. We also offer internships, self-designed majors and other programs that bring learning to life.

We are a student-centered educational institu-tion. From our President Sister Rosemarie Nassif to every member of the administration, faculty and staff, the entire HNU community recognizes that we are here because of, and for, our students. Our classes, programs and activities focus on your learning and achievement.

AdmissionsService andSocial Justice

Holy Names University is committed to inspiring generations to take action.

Here we expect you to do more. We want you to go beyond just attending class, listening to lectures, and reading a textbook. We want you to engage the world at every stage in your education.

At the heart of our institution, we believe in striving for social justice through service. We inspire our students to take what they have learned in the classroom out into the world to make it a better place. Throughout the year, you can engage in service projects like helping Habitat for Humanity in Oakland, or traveling to Tutwiler, Mississippi to build houses. Student commitment to these projects is what makes the HNU vision of service actually happen.

HNU students are activists, mentors and leaders.

Next year u gotta come with us! We just built half a house!

AdmissionsAcademic Programs & Majors

I totally rocked my intervieww/Kaiser, hopefully I’ll get the

internship.

From the very beginning of your academic life at Holy Names we design experiences to complement classroom learning. We share your excitement about preparing for the completion of your undergraduate degree and the next steps you plan to take whether those include joining the workforce or continuing on with graduate studies.

We demonstrate that commitment to you by offering an abundance of experiential learning options from internships and community service to Federal Work Study placements and part time jobs. Included is a student-focused career services program that has at its core individual career counseling, a career resource library, workshops, graduate school forums and job search assistance. To top it off, we plan special events like our Career & Internship Fair, our Summer Job Fest and our “Meet the Alumni” evening.

AdmissionsTechnology at HNU

In Fall 2009 we unveiled the transformation of Brennan Hall into a 15,800-square-foot, full-service Student Center with classrooms, faculty offices, lounge space, food services, and a Technology Support Center. The student services wing provides students with tutoring, laptop computer loaners, career guidance, health and wellness materials, and civic engagement opportunities.

On campus we stay connected as a community through electronic communication portals like Blackboard and MYHNU student email. Wireless internet throughout campus allows you to form study groups and research your next essay topic from just about anywhere you’d like.

In class, professors utilize SmartBoard technol-ogy to make taking notes and keeping up with lectures simple and easy. As professors record in-class discussion notes, the information is uploaded immediately to your student portal for future study.

Hey! Let’s work on our power point presentation N the new

Student Center…meet after class!

AdmissionsStudent Clubs and Campus Life

Hey! I’m spending a week N San Francisco with Model

United Nations...I can’t wait!

All HNU students have the opportunity to grow through experiences across and beyond the campus. Get involved!

While you may come up with great ways to have fun on your own, Student Activities makes sure that there is always something to do on or around campus. You will probably find that there is already a club or organiza-tion that is dedicated to one of your favorite activities. If there isn’t, be creative! At HNU students are encouraged to start new clubs and initiate new activities. Special events occur at different times of the academic year.

The Spring Formal, an HNU tradition, is a time when all students dress up and come together at a local hotel for an elegant meal and dancing.

ADMISSION REqUIREMENTSFreshman Applicants are considered for admission based on the overall strength of their high school record, SAT or ACT scores, an essay (prompts provided), leadership and extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. We do not have any minimum academic require-ments for admission. We are looking for well rounded and curious students who are prepared for the academic rigor of a university. Students must have completed the minimum curriculum required for high school graduation in order to be eligible for admission. Some majors may be looking for proficiency in particular areas such as math and science. Contact your HNU admis-sions counselor for more information on admission criteria.

FINANCIAL AIDAlmost all (over 95%) of the students who attend Holy Names University receive some sort of HNU grant or scholarship assistance paying for school. This is money we give you to help pay for school that you don’t ever have to pay back. It is the goal of HNU to assist students with the overall cost of attendance: tuition, books, room and board, travel, etc. Along with HNU financial assistance, most students will apply for federal financial aid using the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) which can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The application is free and this is how you qualify for grants, loans, and federal work study to assist in paying for college. The HNU code for the FAFSA is 001183.
