Drotar, a native of Longmont, Colo., was the head women’s soccer coach at NAIA Geneva College (Pa.) from 2002-2005 where he led the team to

the playoffs in 2003. Prior to his arrival, the team went 3-15-0. Drotar’s team steadily improved in each of his three seasons, with the 2003 team posting a 4-5-1 conference mark. His teams consistently played one of the tough-est schedules in the region, competing against NCAA II teams on a regular basis. He served as the assistant women’s coach at NAIA Missouri Baptist College for one season, helping them to a 12-5-1 record in 2001. ozarks SOCCER2009 preview

It was a solid season for Ozarks in 2008, as they collected eight wins and tied for the most conference wins (6) in program history. Ozarks returns eight starters from last season’s 8-11-0 team, which finished 6-7-0 in league play, just one win away from advancing to the playoffs. Back-to-back years in which Ozarks has posted six league wins have built momentum for the program, according to head coach Bryan Drotar. “I think the eight wins is a motivating fac-tor,” said Drotar. “I think it will be in the back of their minds. We don’t spend a lot of time talking about wins and losses, but rather the process that got us there. It is good momen-tum and adds excitement coming into this year.” The Lady Eagles had their troubles early on last year, but finished strong in conference play, including picking up an upset win over playoff-bound Mary Hardin-Baylor. Drotar hopes to avoid a slow start this year by empha-sizing consistency. “Early on we lost some games, and I think as conference play began we started to pick up wins and gain confidence,” said Drotar. “The team understood they could win and could improve.” Drotar, who is entering his second season at Ozarks, brings back a veteran team with six seniors. That kind of experience is key to con-tinuing momentum within the program and having a successful season. “We have a lot of experience,” said Drotar. “Those five seniors have all played significantly during their careers. And I think that experi-ence will be very valuable this year. They worked very hard during the off-season. That is the biggest change from a year ago. They have been the leaders on the field.” Among the eight returning starters are three All-Conference players, which include

midfielder Heather Dryden, defender Ema-lee Pearson and goalkeeper Lori Langman. Despite a strong nucleus, the team will need to replace more than half of its goal scoring. “Our attack is a little unknown,” said Drotar. “We expect Heather to come through again and provide goals. Our other offensive produc-tion is still open. The big question mark will be whether we can score.” Dryden, who was named to the All-ASC Third Team, returns for her senior year ranked third in career points (47) and fourth in career goals (18) at Ozarks. She scored five goals and had a team-high 52 shots in 2008. “Heather does a very good job of getting shots on goal,” said Drotar. “She is fast and good in open spaces. We need to get her into situations where we isolate her a little more. I think it will provide more success for her and our team.” In addition to Dryden, Drotar expects new-comers Lacey Mainer and Claudia Solano to spark the offense. “I think Lacey will provide a strong attack up front with her speed,” said Drotar. “Claudia will be in the centermid and can be very valuable in the attack.” With perhaps the offensive attack as a ques-tion mark, Ozarks will again rely on an experi-enced defense to set the tone this season. “I think our team defense will be as strong or stronger than it was last year,” said Drotar. “The unknown is if we have ladies that can consistently put the ball in the back of the net.” Veterans Taylor Crutchfield, Kristyn Shinn, Roxanne Moody and Pearson return for their final year in an Ozarks’ uniform. Crutchfield was All-Conference her freshman season and is a three-year starter. Shinn has been a two-sport athlete during her career and has scored 12 career goals. Moody has played in 54 career

matches, while Pearson has played in 52 career matches and was named Second Team All-Conference in 2008. Both Crutchfield and Pearson were named to the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-Region Team last season. Added to the mix are junior Kristi Gordon and sopho-more Kaitlyn Williams. Gordon started in 18 matches a year ago and Williams started 15 times as a freshman. “Emalee will be the anchor in the defensive line,” said Drotar. “She has a good strong sup-porting cast around her. She is a great leader and is able to organize her teammates. She is a good defender in her own right, too. Taylor is a consistent player. She works hard at practice and in games. She makes very few mistakes. Kristi, Kristyn and Roxanne will be improved and be big players for us. Kaitlyn was our most improved player last year. She will be a force and we will figure out what position fits her.” Langman returns for her junior season after making the All-ASC Third Team last season. At 5-foot-11, Langman provides Ozarks with an athletic presence in goal. She recorded 129 saves in 2008 and owns a 1.64 career goals against average. “Lori will do a terrific job in goal this year,” said Drotar. “She excels in her understanding of the game. She is aggressive and is a big powerful presence in the box. Technically, she is very sound.” Competition is never lacking in the always-tough American Southwest Conference, but Drotar believes his squad can make a run at the playoffs. “I think the competition within the confer-ence will be similar to last year,” said Drotar. “I think the playoffs are an attainable goal for us. We were one game out last year. So earning a spot is a realistic goal this year.”

ozarks SOCCER2008 season review

Drotar Sets Mark In First Season In his first season at Ozarks, head coach Bryan Drotar led the Lady Eagles to a program-best 8 wins. Drotar’s team also tied for the most American Southwest Confer-ence wins (6) in school history. Drotar led Ozarks to a 1-0 upset win over playoff-bound Mary Hardin-Baylor and later collected a dramatic come-from-behind overtime win over LeTourneau in October to cap a strong showing at home. The Lady Eagles finished with a 5-5-0 mark at Hurie Field. The program has appeared to turn the corner the past three season after posting a disappointing a 3-15-0 record in 2005. The 2007 team had its first winning season since the program began in 1996. The 2006 campaign saw the Lady Eagles more than double their victories from the previous season.

Crutchfield, Pearson Earn High Marks Junior defenders Taylor Crutchfield and Ema-lee Pearson were named to the National Soc-cer Coaches Association of America/Adidas NCAA III Scholar-Athlete All-South Region Honorable Mention Team. The two were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements, one of which was maintaining above a 3.50 grade point average. Crutch-field, a biology major from Claremore, Okla., started in all 19 matches and scored one goal. She has been on the ASC All-Academic Team twice in her career. She was named All-Conference in 2006. Pearson, a junior strategic communications major from Salt Lake City, Utah, was named to the All-ASC Second Team in 2008. Pearson started in each of Ozarks 19 matches and played the most minutes on the team. Pearson addition-ally works in the Sports Information Office and is editor of the Communique, a campus newsletter produced bi-weekly. She has been on the ASC All-Academic Team twice. Both Crutchfield and Pearson have been members of the Dean’s List while at Ozarks.

Inspiring Community Service The Lady Eagles completed the Ozark re-gion’s 11th annual Susan G. Komen 5K Race for the Cure in April. Adorned in bright green team shirts, the annual race was held at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade Mall in Rogers, Ark. In 2008 the Arkansas race funded over $653,000 to 14 agencies that support breast health education, screening and treatment. The largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008. “It’s really fun to get out and support the Race for the Cure,” assistant coach Colby Keesee said. “It’s so awesome to see all of the people running the race and knowing we’re all supporting such a great cause.” The team was also active in Student-Athlete Advisory Committee service projects throughout the school year.

Tops In Athletic Department Eight players received ASC All-Academic hon-ors, the most of any program in the athletic department during the 2008-2009 academic year. To be eligible for ASC All-Academic hon-ors, student-athletes must have lettered, be in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average of 3.00 or better. Taylor Crutchfield, a junior biology major from Claremore, Okla., Heather Dryden, a junior physical education major from Plano, Texas, Emalee Pearson, a junior strategic communications major from Salt Lake City, Utah, Roxanne Moody, a junior management/business administration major from Euless, Texas, and Laura Spruiell, a junior physical education major from Dallas, Texas, made it for the second time in their respective careers. Kristi Gordon, a sopho-more business administration major from Fort Worth, Texas, Lori Langman, a sopho-more biology major from San Antonio, Texas, and Jessica Martin, a sophomore undeclared major from Bentonville, Ark., made the team in their first year eligible. The Lady Eagles had nine players on the team a year ago.

Four Net All-ASC Honors Four players from the 2008 team were voted to the All-ASC Team. Junior defender Emalee Pearson earned All-ASC Second Team hon-ors, while junior forward Heather Dryden, sophomore midfielder Chelsea Coleman and sophomore goalkeeper Lori Langman were named to the All-ASC Third Team. Pearson, from Salt Lake City, Utah, paced a defensive unit that set the program record for most wins (8), while tying the program record for most conference wins (6). Pearson started in all 19 matches and played the most minutes for Ozarks during the 2008 season. A de-fensive specialist, Pearson was instrumental in helping Ozarks pull off an upset against Mary Hardin-Baylor October 11. A three-year starter, she has played in 52 career matches. She is also a two-time member of the ASC All-Academic Team. Dryden, from Plano, Texas, led the team in shots (52) and ranked second on the team in points (11) and goals (5). A starter in all 19 matches, Dryden had a two-goal performance against Louisiana College and had a team-best 10 shots against Mc-Murry. She ends the season ranked fourth at Ozarks in career points (47), career goals (18) and career assists (11). She has 134 career shots and 5 game-winning goals, both third-most at Ozarks. This marks the third time she has been All-ASC. Coleman, from Fort Worth, Texas, led the team in points (17), goals (6) and assists (5). She finished with 32 shots, second-most on the team. Coleman had the team’s only hat trick during the season when she netted all three Ozarks’ goals in a 3-2 overtime win against LeTourneau. She had three games in which she scored a goal and had an assist. Langman, from San Antonio, Texas, received All-ASC honors for the sec-ond straight season. Langman finished with 129 saves and a .782 saves percentage, both fifth in the ASC. She notched four shutouts and owned a 2.00 goals against average, each of which were in the ASC’s top-10. A starter in 18 matches, she played 1622:21 minutes in goal and had six games with ten or more saves, including a career-high 14 against Hardin-Simmons.

Dryden Climbing Record Books Junior forward Heather Dryden continues to climb the school record books. Dryden has established herself among the top offensive threats in the conference, while making a mark on the school record books. Following the 2008 season, she has 47 career points (4th), 18 career goals (4th) and 11 career assists (4th). She has 134 career shots and 5 game-winning goals, both third-most at Ozarks. A three-time All-Conference player, Dryden led the 2008 team in shots (52) and ranked second on the team in points (11) and goals (5). Dryden needs 4 goals to move into second all-time and 9 points to be in sec-ond place in points. The senior from Plano, Texas, had 8 goals in 2007 and 5 goals her freshman year. She recorded a career-high 21 points in 2007.

American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 14th championship season of competition with the 2009-2010 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2009-2010 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.

For 175 years, University of the Ozarks has approached education with an unyielding search for truth.

That search led our founders to establish the first co-educational college west of the Mis-sissippi. It set the stage for the first Arkansas woman to receive a college degree. And be-cause truth often defies convention, ours was the first historically white college in the state to admit African-Americans.

Every day, our history inspires Ozarks stu-dents to discover their own individual truths. But we won’t expect you to find the answers alone. Through every step of your search, we’ll stand by you as true scholars, mentors, and friends.

Founded in 1834 as Cane Hill School, Uni-versity of the Ozarks is a private, four-year comprehensive university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Located on 30 acres in Clarksville, Arkansas (pop. 7,500), Ozarks is home to about 675 students from 22 states and 20 countries.

More than 80 percent of our faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. Because we’re small by design, our average class size is 14 and the student/ faculty ratio is 13:1.

More than 60 majors, minors, and preprofes sional degrees, from Composite Science to Strategic Communications are offered. Many

Ozarks graduates also go on to top graduate programs in law, medicine, and engineering.

The central mall of campus is flanked by historic Munger Chapel and Walker Hall, a $7 million facility that houses a television studio, radio station, and state-of-the art editing suites. The 38,000-square-foot Robson Library houses more than 175,000 items for reading and research.

Seventy-five percent of students live on cam-pus in one of six residence halls that feature such perks as recreation rooms and in-room computer connections.

At roughly half the national average for a pri-vate, liberal arts education, University of the Ozarks’ tuition offers exceptional value. About 95 percent of students receive some type of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work study. Over $7.7 million in financial aid is distributed annually. You may have heard that a liberal arts education is all about mental agility, intel-lectual prowess, service to others, and critical thinking. We couldn’t agree more. But at Ozarks, we’re also steeped in the tradition of preparedness – for your career, for graduate school, for life. A key part of being prepared is knowing when to ask for help. Ozarks’ Student Support Services (SSS) provides free tutoring, a 24-hour computer lab, resume as-sistance, career and grad school strategies,

and more than a dozen other services to help students achieve their very best.

Internships are an essential part of the col-lege experience, allowing you to practice newfound skills “in the field” and try a career (or two) on for size. Ozarks interns are doing research in polymer chemistry, working with the forest service, and volunteering for na-tional political campaigns. Just how much can one student get involved? One Ozarks student landed internships at both the Brookings Insti-tution in Washington, D.C. and the FOX News Network in Manhattan and created films for Little Rock’s “48 Hour Film Festival” as well as the Cinequest Film Festival.

Once Ozarks graduates get out into the world, there’s no stopping them. Our alumni pursue a truly incredible array of careers, from writing for ad agencies and practicing clinical psychol-ogy to working for the Secret Service. And if you’re interested in furthering your education, expect to be in good company. More than 85 percent of Ozarks students who apply are accepted to top graduate, medical, and law schools. If you’re not accustomed to up-close-and per-sonal interaction with your instructors, you’ll get used to it soon enough. Both in and out of class, Ozarks faculty demand accountabil-ity (don’t be surprised if you get a phone call from your professor when you miss class). That sort of “personal attention” is just one example

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS

Page 33: 2009 University of the Ozarks Women's Soccer Guide

of our genuine concern for each individual student’s progress.

Our faculty is known for inspiring remark-able acts. With their help, students are study-ing abroad in Strasburg, Florence, and Hong Kong. They’re learning about new forms of international currency trading from experts in the field, and using their Latin skills to en-hance research papers on medieval drama. If this sounds more like master’s work than undergraduate, it’s no accident. Because University of the Ozarks is small by design, professors have the time to delve deeply into every student’s interests – and help make the most of their talents. In the political science program, Dr. Gil Parks’ students are research-ing national human rights legislation at American University in D.C. and taking on internships with the National Republican Senatorial Committee. They’re also attend-ing law schools nationwide, including Notre Dame, Pepperdine, and Georgetown. Simi-larly, Dr. Sean Coleman encourages his pre-med students to take full advantage of the liberal arts, with foreign language minors, and immersion trips to countries like Mexico and Italy. With over 40 clubs and organiza-tions to choose from, it isn’t hard to find one you’re truly passionate about. For some, it’s

a club with academic affiliations like Stu-dents in Free Enterprise (SIFE) – a global, non-profit organization that helps members develop leadership, teamwork, and commu-nication skills by championing free enter-prise and community service. Others pursue more personal passions by joining Amnesty International, College Republicans, or Young Democrats. And if you’re simply looking to have fun, you won’t be disappointed. In the student center, ping-pong matches have been known to go on for hours, and you never know when a soccer game might break out in the quad. Movie nights often hit the big screens in the residence halls, where camara-derie and community come together. At Ozarks, serious sports fans have a lot to cheer about. As a member of NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference, our teams square off against competitors from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Our teams make the playoffs and our student-athletes consistently earn All-America and All-Conference honors. Our Eagles compete academically, too. They regularly appear on ASC all-academic rosters and are recognized for high marks by organizations like the Na-tional Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
