He began his colle-giate playing career at Central Washington University and eventu-ally finished at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where he gradu-ated in 1998 with a B.S. in Exercise Science.

Person, who earned his MBA from the University of Mobile in Mayof 2002 with a 3.9 GPA, also has playing experience with Mobile. Aformer starter at right back for the Rams, he also played for the

PDL Jackson Chargers in 1998-99.

He is an active member of the NSCAA and has spent two summers working with theregional Olympic Developmental Program.

Kevin Laux

Laux begins his second season on the Lady Rams' coaching staffafter serving as a graduate assistant for Spring Hill College’s soccerprogram.

Laux is back in familiar territory, as he graduated from theUniversity of Mobile in 2005 with a B.S in psychology and a minorin sports management. He was also a member of the 2002 men'ssoccer team that won a NAIA National Championship and receivedthe team's 2004 Champion of Character award.

UM Coaches

Page 6: 2008 Women's Soccer Guide

Most teams would temper expectationscoming off a 3-12-2 season, but that isnot so with the Lady Rams. The reasonfor optimism is the 2-2-2 mark of thefinal 6 games of 2007 and all of the expe-rience gained by talented young players, along with the influx of even more newblood.

"We want to pick up where we left off in2007, where we tied or beat several teamsthat had beaten us earlier in the year"Head Coach Brian Person said. "If we cando that, the results will take care of them-selves."

Those "results" will come against a morefavorable schedule than last year, when the

Lady Rams had to hit the road early andoften, while facing top competition.

GCAC Games Vital"We played a lot of road games last yearand we wanted to change that this yearand even it up a bit," Person said. "Thereare not as many tough teams on the roadand it's a schedule we can do well with."

Non-conference foes Martin Methodist,Auburn-Montgomery, University ofMontevallo and University of West Floridaoffer tough challenges, but Gulf CoastAthletic Conference action againstBelhaven, William Carey, LSU-Shreveportand Spring Hill will take on an addedimportance this season.

This season, the NAIA has gone to directqualification, where the winner of eachconference tournament gets an automaticbid to the NAIA National Tournament. While the GCAC is one team short of therequired six teams, they have a one-yearwaiver due to Hurricane Katrina.

"We are excited about that because wehave definitely improved our team fromlast year," Person stated. "We were com-petitive in conference last year and we aregood enough to compete in the confer-ence this year."

Leadership From Returnees Crucial

If the Lady Rams are going to turn all oftheir promise into results, they will need tocount on some key returning players andsome incoming players to fill holes.

"We have only one senior in LaurenThomson and we are asking a lot of herto become a leader," Person said. "She hasmade good progress in that area and willplay in the midfield or back, depending onwhere the newcomers fit in."

While Thomson will provide leadership,2006 NAIA All-American TerriMcCreadie will be looked to for goal scor-ing.

"We are really counting on Terri to comein and be our goal scorer," Person stated."We hope she can put some balls away forus."

Rounding out the key returnees is a pair ofAll-Conference selections in the back.

"Louise Arseneault and Anna Maddox willbe two key defenders that will hopefullypick up where they left off and improvethroughout the year," Person said.

Incoming Players Must Step Up

Complimenting the returning players willbe a nice looking group of incoming

freshmen and transfers.

"To help us continue to be stout in theback, we are looking for Ashley Lachapelleto come in and be an added presencealong with Anna and Louise," Person said.

Junior college transfers Aislinn Finfrockand Danielle Byrd will contribute in themiddle of the field, and could be key ingetting McCreadie closer to her 2006 totalof 15 goals.

"Aislinn and Danielle are expected to beimpact players in the midfield, and we areexpecting Aislinn to contribute in scoringgoals and creating opportunities for Terri, which is one of the things we missed lastyear," Person added.

Continuing the theme of adding offense,Person thinks that freshman EmmaMurphy can be a player "that draws atten-tion away from others, while offering ver-satility to play in the back and up front."

All in all, the Lady Rams will need theyoung players to continue to mature anddevelop if the team wants to make itthrough a schedule that features 9 homegames and 8 GCAC contests, spanning 2.5months.

While some might look at the 3-12-2record and consider the 2007 Universityof Mobile women's soccer season a dis-appointment, the Lady Ram coachesconsider it a building block to a brightfuture.

"We knew we would struggle with sofew players and so much youth on theteam," Head Coach Brian Person said."But, with two true freshmen makingthe All-GCAC team and others gainingexperience, we feel we are headed in theright direction."

Breather please….

The squad had to perform for much ofthe season with 0 or 1 sub, and that tiedthe coaches' hands and forced them toplay defensively. That saw the scoringdrop from 61 goals scored in 2006 toonly 13 last year.

"Several injuries and some unexpecteddepartures hurt us last year," Personsaid. "We had to play conservatively andthen, late in the game when our girlswore down, the other teams took advan-tage of it."

That was evidenced by teams tallying 10more goals in the second half againstMobile, including a 6-game stretch with17 second-half goals allowed.

Up and down, and up again….

Three distinct stretches made up the sea-son for the Lady Rams: a solid firstthree games, a brutal 8-game losingstreak, and then a very promising final6-game stretch that saw Mobile pick up2 wins and 2 ties against conferenceopponents.

The opening game of the seasonbrought Final-Four team MartinMethodist to the Jungle, and the Lady

Rams performed well, losing 0-2. Mobilekept it scoreless through the first 31minutes, but could not hold on.

After a disappointing 3-0 loss toReinhardt, the Lady Rams defeatedRoberts Wesleyan 2-1 thanks to goalsfrom Chelsea Bate and Terri McCreadie.

"It wasn't a bad start to the season,"Person stated. "We turned in a very niceperformance against a championship cal-iber team, and then picked up our firstwin of the season against RobertsWesleyan."

Things went south after the "w," as theteam was outscored 26-4 during an 8-game losing streak that included fivegames where the Lady Rams wereshutout.

The team then began to click after thelong drought that featured games againsttop-level teams like Lindsey Wilson,Covenant College, West Florida,Auburn-Montgomery and William Carey.

"The losing streak was tough after a nicestart," Person said. "But, all of thosegames versus top teams tested us men-tally and physically, and that paid offdown the stretch where our young ladies

started performing at a level we werelooking for."

Mobile's first game after the streak wasat Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foeBelhaven, and Mobile went to work tak-ing out a lot of their frustrations to thetune of a 4-0 blanking.

The Lady Rams followed that with ascoreless tie at rival Spring Hill, whichmarked the first time all year the teamhad back-to-back games with positiveresults. One game later, Mobile tiedLSU-Shreveport 1-1 and then beatBelhaven 2-1 in a play-in game for theGCAC Tournament. The season endedwith a 3-0 loss at William Carey.

"The year-end run really gave us hopefor 2008," Person said. "Conference playis always key, and our team began toshow it can compete, and that our hardwork was paying off."

Award Winning….

Despite the 3-12-2 record, four LadyRams were named to the All-Conferenceteam. Terri McCreadie and AnnaMaddox were 1st-Team selections, whileAshley Hoffman and Louise Arseneaultwere tabbed for the 2nd-Team.

Louise Arseneault was named 2nd-Team All-GCAC in 2007.
