Situation Questions

1. Describe a situation where you had to make a decision but you did not have all the information you needed.

At my current job, I encounter situations where a commission needs to be paid to a financial rep, however with little to no information provided by the sponsor company, I must do my best to research what I can and make the best decision possible so that we do not inconvenience our reps and so they can get paid their commissions. Usually what happens is we make sure our reps get paid first, then correct information and accounts behind the scenes.

2. Describe a situation where you found an error in your work. What was the cause? How was it handled?

My previous job at Fox Communities Credit Union, there was an incident where I short-changed a member. By the end of the business day as I was reconciling my cash drawer, I noticed I was over cash in my drawer. Sometimes it just comes down to human error as I counted the cash back to the member. I went through all of my transactions for that day until I could narrow it down to a few specific transactions. I had to call 2 members, I asked them if they still had the cash I gave them earlier and if they would recount it or recall what I gave them. After I found out which member it was, I apologized and assured them I would deposit that amount I shorted them into their account and offered to mail a receipt .

3. Give an example of a time when you were given a task to accomplish without advance warning.

At my current job, we have been short-handed and with an employee who had called in sick one day, left us dividing up her work amongst the rest of us. It was difficult because not only did I have my own tasks to complete for the day, but now another’s work. It always works its way out though as we communicate and work as a team to accomplish the daily tasks given.

4. Give a specific example of doing more than required in one of your previous jobs.

When I worked at Fox, I had a member come in to my office very upset and shaken because he had lost his debit card and found that there had been unauthorized charges made. After walking through with him what he had done earlier that day, it was discovered that he had left his wallet at the VA’s office in Milwaukee.I could have advised him what to do and left him to handle this situation on his own, but I didn’t. I couldn’t leave this distraught man to handle this situation on his own. I asked him what he all had in his wallet. I made a list of credit cards, account numbers, his social security card number and so on. I offered to assist him with calling his credit card companies and explain what happened so he wouldn’t be held liable for any unauthorized purchases. I also called the social security administration so we could alert them of any unauthorized inquiries or use of his social security number. After all was said and done, this man was not out any money and he thanked me for helping through his nerve racking predicament.

5. Describe a situation where you wished you had acted differently with someone at work. What did you do? What happened as a result?

At my previous job, I was just finishing my lunch hour and walking back to my office and my supervisor sternly noted that there was a member waiting in the lobby to open an account and pointed out that I was 3 minutes late coming back from lunch. I immediately became short-tempered because I felt as though she used a poor attitude towards me and she said it in front of my co-workers. I turned around and sarcastically replied that I was glad she pointed that out in front of everyone and I walked away. Afterwards I wished I had not said anything and waited until I could have talked to her in private when we were both rational. We didn’t talk for the remainder of the day. The next day I apologized to her for what happened and she too apologized to me taking blame for how the situation was handled.

6. Describe a time when you organized your thoughts on a matter of importance to you, and in communicating these to others; you felt you got you points across well.

There were several occasions at my previous job where I had to prioritize my work to make sure the most important duties were carried out to keep the office running smoothly. There were many times when I had to delegate work to other employees to ensure the tasks got completed. I would reiterate which tasks were most

important and to hold off completing their daily tasks until the high priority work was completed first. I would periodically check in on their progress so if need be, we could make adjustments.

7. Describe a time when you brought together a group of people to work with each other in some activity or project?

At my previous job, I was the Christmas basket charity coordinator for my branch. What this job entailed was raising money or giving money by employee donations to arrange a themed basket to present at the company Christmas party. Each branch had the option whether or not to participate in this program. Once the baskets were presented at the party, the silent bidding would begin until the highest bidder was determined. As Christmas would near, I would give input at our branch monthly staff meetings and encourage participation from my co-workers. Many of us worked together in raising money, either by holding a brat fry or asking local businesses for donations. Once we had the money we needed, we would purchase our themed items and put the basket together. Most of my co-workers at my office would attend the Christmas party just to see how much money we raised for charity.

8. Describe a time when you set your sights on a high, demanding goal and achieved it.

After high school, I attended UWGB for a semester and realized that it wasn’t for me. I came home and began working as a part-time teller at FCCU. After a year of working there I applied for a superviser position and got the job. I was very excited to be working full-time and to feel important. After about 5-6 years of working as a supervisor, I felt as though something was still missing. I wanted to go back to school. Throughout elementary and high school I always knew I would be a college graduate. I felt like I was a failure for not completing college. I am actually glad I did not pursue college and finish right away because after working for a few years, I found what my passion is. I have a passion for leadership, people and carrying out my work knowing I am completing it to my fullest potential. I enrolled in classes at FVTC and am starting out taking 1 class a semester while also working full-time. This was a huge step for me, but I have been putting my best effort towards my schooling and so far it has paid off with earning a 4.0

9. Give an example of a new idea that you came up with that made a significant contribution to the success of some activity or project.

I like to keep myself organized and type notes for procedures in the case I have not performed a certain task in a long while, I can reference my notes or if someone else would need to complete a task, they would know how to complete it with notes at hand. At my current job, I have had several of my co-workers ask if I can make them a copy of my typed notes-outline format. I have even had senior members of my department ask me for notes so they can train a new employee better.

10. Give an example of an experience where you came to be regarded by other people as a person who could be trusted to listen to them and treat them fairly.

At my current job, I have a close relationship with my assistant manager because she knows she can tell me things that will not be repeated or used inappropriately. I also have other co-workers who confide in me because I don’t judge. Sometimes I simply listen or give a different perspective without offending anyone.

11. Give examples of your involvement in safety and wellness programs at your previous positions.

I have participated in emergency evacuations at both of my jobs. My previous job I was in charge of the robbery kit in the case there was a robbery, I would delegate specific duties to employees. I also participated in wellness coaching with my previous insurance company. I have also utilized company provided Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for personal and growth opportunities.
