Apostles of the Eucharist

Happy Birthday! Today, Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the birthday of the Church. On this day, the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples huddled in fear in the upper room. Filled with God’s grace, they were then emboldened and empowered to fearlessly go forth and proclaim the Gospel of Christ to all. Let us pray for the same grace! Pentecost is the time of disciple making! Perhaps this is the best time for us to review our recent Disciple Maker Index. If you recall, we are part of a national pilot project to reform parishes into communities of disciples. We took the index earlier in the year as a follow-up to the initial survey in 2015. We received 353 responses. The results were very encouraging. Our parish improved in every domain! We also scored better than the national averages of large parishes, suburban parishes, and diocesan parishes in every domain except one! This is confirmed by the fact that our Mass attendance continues to grow (4% above last year), the number of active ministries continues to increase, Faith Formation programs have also increased attendance, our Preschool is thriving, and offertory donations have grown. The “comments” section was interesting. The vast number of responses were extremely supportive. There were some wonderful suggestions such as providing equipment for the hearing impaired and forming a parish retreat program. A handful wished that homilies were more relevant, people were more reverent, kids were more respectful, and the liturgies were more reserved. A few struggled with the notion of inclusivity and tolerance: that our mission is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus to all people, and not just those who look, sound, or act like us. It was interesting to see how few report that they are comfortable sharing their faith with others. Only a handful stated that they have invited others to join them for Mass. In other words ... many of us are still huddled in the upper room. It is important for us to reach out to others and share the reason for our hope and our joy. Jesus Christ is alive! Share how the Lord has touched your life. Invite others to join you for Eucharistic Adoration or for one of our many parish activities. Better yet, invite them to come with you to the Holy Mass ... to listen to the Word of God and be fed by His Body and Blood! St. Paul IS an amazing family of faith where ALL are welcomed! Share the Good News! Happy Birthday!

Infant Baptism ‘I baptize you in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’

Children's Corner Page 4

The baptism of a child is a special cause for joy and celebration on the part of the Church, the whole community of faith! Baptism is a birth into the Christian community and is in every way as solemn and important as birth itself. It is an event that needs to be prepared for, and it can serve as a reminder to you about your own faith and what it means to you. If you have any questions regarding Infant Baptism, please contact Lizette Espel at:(961-3023; [email protected])

Pope Francis: “Today’s Gospel (Cf. John 14:15-21), continuation of last Sunday’s, takes us to that moving and dramatic moment, which is Jesus’ Last

Supper with His disciples. John the Evangelist gathers from the Lord’s mouth and heart His last teachings, before His Passion and Death. Jesus promises His friends, in that sad, dark moment, that, after Him, they will receive “another Paraclete” (v. 16). This word means another “Advocate,” another Defender, another Consoler: “the Spirit of truth” (v. 17); and He adds” “I will not leave you desolate; I will come to you” (v. 18). These words transmit the joy of a new coming of Christ: He, risen and glorified, abides in the Father and, at the same time, comes to us in the Holy Spirit. And in this, His new coming, our union with Him and with the Father is revealed: “In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you” (v. 20) (Pope Francis, Regina Caeli, 21 May 2017).

Saints of God: This Thursday we honor

St. Ephrem, Syrian deacon and doctor of the church (306-373). He is remembered as a gifted teacher and ardent defender of the Catholic Church. Although he was ordained

a deacon (so he could preach), he refused to be ordained a priest. It is said that he once feigned madness to avoid being consecrated a bishop! He had a great love for the Sacred Scriptures, a devotion to Jesus - fully human and fully divine, and a merciful heart. He wrote music to teach people the truths of our faith. That is why he has been nicknamed “Harp of the Holy Spirit.” Prayer of St. Ephrem: O Lord and Master of my life,

grant not unto me a spirit of idleness, of discouragement,

of lust for power, and of vain speaking. But bestow upon

me, Thy servant, the spirit of chastity, of meekness, of

patience, and of love. Yea, O Lord and King, grant that I

may perceive my own transgressions, and judge not my brother, for blessed art Thou unto ages of ages. Amen.

Words of Wisdom: For me prayer is a surge of the

heart, it is a simple look towards Heaven, it is a cry of

recognition and of love, embracing both trial and

joy.”

Reflections on Scripture Page 6

I. Acts of the Apostles 1:2-11 "...tongues as of fire..." Reflection: "Pentecost" was the Hellenistic-Jewish name for "Shavuot," a harvest festival called for in Leviticus 23:15-23, and this called for an "assembly." Hence, the earliest followers of the Way were gathered together in obedience to Torah. The "wind" and "fire" are traditional symbols we find in the Hebrew Scriptures connected with theophanies, or manifestations of the presence of God. The “Miraculous” element is that each person spoke in a “different tongue,” (or different language) so that each person heard the proclamation in his or her own language. This can easily mean that the Gospel is not limited to any social group, but is “heard” by each and every person regardless of native tongue. This has been caused for two thousand years by the presence of the Spirit. II. 1 Corinthians 12:2b-7, 12-13 Spiritual Gifts Reflection: The presence of the Spirit in the Corinthian community was something that St. Paul had to deal with. For that community, ecstasy,

speaking in tongues, and other exhibitions of enthusiasm actually produced divisions within the group, with one or more claiming superior "spirituality" because of what he or she could do. Hence, the Apostle points out the commonality of the Spirit in the entire church. He also points out the variety of expressions of the Holy Spirit in the recognition of the uniqueness of our gifts. Each of us has certain gifts, unique to ourselves, and products of God's grace. But since they are "gifts," we cannot take credit for them. Instead, we must recognize that such gifts work for the benefit of the entire community. This is an important lesson for us, today. First, we have to recognize that whatever gifts we have are "gifts," not products of our own efforts. Second, we have to recognize the gifts of others as being just as valuable to the community as ours are. Finally, we must all share our gifts for the benefit of the whole. St. Paul is addressing us and our divisiveness, not only the Corinthians. III. John 20:19-23 The Johannine Commission Reflection: For the last four Sundays, we have read sections from Jesus' "Farewell Discourse" in the Gospel of John. Now we jump past the Crucifixion to the original last chapter of the Gospel. This is the

section just prior to that where Thomas makes his profession of Faith. The important elements of this section is the "sending" of the disciples (us) by Jesus. And at the same time as the sending, He brought the Holy Spirit upon them. While this is slightly different from the Lucan version in Acts, it involves the same elements, for the phrase "breathed" on them has great significance: this is what God did when He created humans (Gen. 2:7) or when God breathed life into the "Dry Bones" in Ezekiel 37:5. Hence, Jesus effects a "new creation," a "new beginning" of a different kind of life. Note also the dual greeting Jesus offers, "Peace be with you." We recall in his Farewell Discourse he had given his Peace to his disciples; here, in his glorified (wounded) body, he wishes the same Peace as a substitute for the normal "Do not be afraid" phraseology expected in a manifestation of God. The “commission” is not parallel to Matthew 16:19. Another translation of v. 23 is “those whose sins are forgiven, are forgiven; and those whom you retain, have been retained.” The latter refers not to sins, but to the continued inclusion of members of the Johannine Community. And we, of course, are the successors to that community.

Thank you to our exhibitors for our Second Annual Small Business Expo 2017 Our Parish is blessed with your participation in this networking event!

Passports to Holiness- We had 50 Faith Formation students who submitted their completed Passports this Easter. This means that these children benefited spiritually from experiencing our Holy Triduum: Holy Thursday Mass, Good Friday Adoration of the Cross, and Easter Vigil. Thank you to the parents who made it possible for the children to be a part of such a holy moment in our liturgical year. These children will be celebrating with a bowling/pizza party with Fr. Bill. Details will be mailed to these families!

Registration for the Fall is in full swing! Call Carmen Cayon for more information (813-961-3023). We have more children registering and not enough teachers to help!! Do you love to talk about Jesus and his Church? Do you wonder how you can help our families learn more about the treasures of our faith? We Need YOU! We are in need of new teachers who are willing to share their faith with our children. We will have a training this summer, call our office for more information on how you can be a part of our Faith Formation team!!

Thank You to each and every teacher (catechist) who helped us this year, whether you were a teacher, an assistant, directed us in song, a “go-to” substitute (always ready to jump in and help), a door greeter, a retreat planner, a photographer at our events, and so on…..each one of you made a huge impact on our success this year. We can never show you enough gratitude, but we know that God has blessed you in many ways, which is why many of you have decided to return next year. Our families are blessed by your generosity and love for Jesus. Catechists-Please RSVP for our Awesome Catechist Appreciation Dinner on June 8th at 6:30pm at Bethany Center. Safe Environment: Child abuse is a tragic reality which can be prevented. How? 1. Talk to your children about touching safety. Teach them

that it is OK to say “NO,” get away, and seek help. 2. Help your children make a list of the people they can turn to for help if they have a problem. 3. Teach your children that unsafe touch can happen with people they know and trust; not only with strangers. 4. Respect your children’s personal boundaries. Teach them to trust their intuition about others. 5. Be aware of those who have contact with your children and be sure it is a “Safe Environment” with at least two adults supervising whenever possible. For more information, please call our Faith Formation office 961-3023.

SecretsofSuccessful

StewardsIn our Church today, few concepts are more misunderstood than the concept of Catholic stewardship. Most that hear the word stewardship immediately think of fund-raising and shut out the rest of the message. That really is not what stewardship is about at all. Simply put, the good steward is the person who takes care of whatever it is that she or he has been entrusted. They use the gifts they have been given to good purpose and don’t squander it. As the U.S. Catholic Bishops said in Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response: “A Christian steward is one who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others and returns them with increase to the Lord”. When we use our time, talents and treasures well, we feel in balance, in tune with God. We realize we have been generously given those gifts and, in turn, we are using them for good purposes. There are several “secrets” that good stewards have in common. Over the next few bulletins, we will explore what these are. I’m sure there will be a few that

will surprise you! Here is Number 1 of 7.

Successful stewards … Genuine, thought-out stewardship is not about pain or depletion. Stewardship is most deeply about pleasure and increase. If you think about it for just a moment, you realize how good you feel when you are

generous, when you are doing something that makes a difference in someone’s life. That is what underlies good stewardship, which makes it actually quite natural in our lives. There is a simple saying that makes ultimate sense: “Stewardship—it’s already in your heart”. There is something deep within us that is good and generous, some almost biological sensation that is triggered when we see a need. It is that good feeling that wells up within us when another person’s needs and our shared gifts intersect. “It is better to give than to receive” might seem like so many lofty words, but as we look back in our lives, we find they are absolutely true. How many times have we found ourselves saying, after we have extended ourselves (even when a big begrudgingly): I like doing this. Giving feels great; I’m not depleted at all. In fact, I’m enriched! And so, good stewards capitalize on such moments. Why not, they say, feel absolutely wonderful when I have given some of my time, or talent or treasure or something or someone and have realized the sharing of that gift has made a difference? Intrigued? Come back next week … same space … to find out more about the Seven

Coffee & Donuts Last Sunday until August

Your Hosts Today:

Knights of Columbus Our Knights are joining forces with the Finance Council as they present the Small Business Fair today. Stop by and meet some of our local business owners and learn how you can become a member of this incredible group of men … St. Paul’s Knights of Columbus. They are the men in the yellow shirts and always wearing a smile.

As we end our Coffee and Donuts for the summer, we

want to acknowledge all of the awesome ST. PAUL MINISTRIES RST INDIVIDUALS who gave up a Sunday

morning (s) to host Coffee and Donuts. Because of your generosity in giving of yourself and your time, the Spirit of St. Paul’s continues to fill the hearts of so very many that pass through its doors. We truly are a Parish Family.

Enjoy your summer … we’ll see you in August!

but we make a life by what we give.

Faith in Action: To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart and let Him in! Open your heart and be grateful for all the gifts God has given us. Regardless of your circumstance, God has given us all blessings. What we do

with those gifts is our gift back to God. Generously sharing our gifts keeps us more "God-centered" and less "self-centered".

HurricaneSeasonishere!

Now is the time to prepare. Make sure

you have evacuation routes, water,

batteries, and non-perishable foods.

Also, make a note of friends and

neighbors who may need extra help

when a storm threatens. Let us pray:

“Our Father in Heaven through the

intercession of Our Lady of Prompt

Succor, spare us during this Hurricane

season from all harm. Protect us and

our homes from all disasters of nature.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to

help us. We ask this through Christ

our Lord. Amen.”

LivingFaith:

Pentecost is the

birthday of the Church. When the

disciples entered the upper room, they

were afraid to share their faith.

Afterwards, they went out and boldly

proclaimed the Good News of God’s

love and mercy to all the world.

Question: Do you share your faith by

all you say and do or are you locked up

in your upper room of fear?
