    2014 CHA Mega Show

CHA Mega Show: A Look Inside Being a professional craft designer affords me the opportunity to be an insider in the craft industry. One of the most exciting events of the year is the Craft and Hobby Association’s Mega Show. There are many wonderful manufacturers that exhibit. Read all about my experience at the 2014 CHA Mega Show on pages 6, 7 and 8.

Show Floor Tell All Businesses spend months preparing for it. Crafters always want a sneak peak.

Q: What does the show floor look like?

A: The excitement builds as you travel down each aisle, seeing booth after booth of new craft products that hopefully will be in stores soon. Aisles are teeming with buyers and attendees as they visit exhibitors in their booths. The booths are mini stores that showcase wonderful products which find their way to a store near you.

    Q: What happens at CHA?

A: Buying, education and networking are the top three activities of this exciting show. Buyers from the big-box stores, as well as mom-and-pop stores search the halls for great products. Crafting and business classes are offered for attendees and exhibitors. Networking is huge at the show and helps drive business.

    Spring Cloche By Carol Heppner

Get ready for spring with this glass-dome cloche that you can make yourself. Glass-dome cloches can be quite costly to purchase, but you can make your own and save money. Many stores now sell glass-bell jars and the price for these jars vary. These glass-bell jars are the domes used in this project. An Internet search can help you find where to purchase a glass-bell jars.

MAKE Once you find the glass-bell jar, you need to also purchase a clear-glass candle stick holder and a clear-glass dish to fit the glass-bell jar. Simply glue the top of the clear-glass candle stick holder to the bottom of the clear-glass dish with a glue that adheres to glass. It is really that simple.

USE As seen in the photograph, I purchased from my local craft store a bird’s nest and wooden egg to sit in my glass-dome cloche. Other times of the year I use the glass-dome cloche to present a cupcake, cookies or candies. The cloche can be used with shells and a starfish for a fun summer look or fill with pinecones for the fall. You will find that this glass-dome cloche is very versatile.

Glass Candleholder Candlelight brings a wonderful glow to rooms, setting the atmosphere for relaxation. Creating an elegant candleholder is easy with the right materials.

    GATHER Materials

    Etching

    Etchall® Cream, Armor Etch http://www.armourproducts.com

    Masking Tape

    Stamping

    IndigoBlu FlitterGlu, IndigoBlu.com

    IndigoBlu Mega-Flake, Lancashire Rose, IndigoBlu.com

IndigoBlu Rubber Stamp Set: Music Hall, IndigoBlu.com

    Tools

    Etching: Craft gloves

Stamping: Phat Foam for FlitterGlu (IndigoBlu.com), Scoochy sponge (IndigoBlu.com), Soft

    cloth, Scrap Paper

Please Note When cleaning the etching cream off the glass, do not discard the

waste water in a ceramic sink, tub or other vessel. The waste

water and the etching cream can etch the surface of anything in

which it comes in contact. Please read the bottle to know how to

use the product and clean the etched glass.

MAKE Place masking tape onto the areas of the glass that you will not want to etch. Make sure the edges of the tape are firmly attached to the glass so the etching cream does not seep under the tape.

The tape, in this project, was placed around the top and the bottom parts of the glass candleholder.

Etch the glass, following the manufacturer’s directions. Make sure not to allow the etching cream to come in contact with other glass.

After you dry the glass, remove the masking tape and stamp the design with the FlitterGlu and then apply the Mega-Flake over the tacky glue.

    Options

Add a sticker onto the glass before

etching. Once the glass is etched,

remove the sticker. The sticker will act

as a mask to prevent the etching of the

    area under the sticker.

Instead of stamping the glass after it has

been etched, use vinyl stickers or beaded

or crystals stickers to embellish the glass.

Crafting is a great way to spend quality time together. Planning your project, the trip to the store, picking out your beads and laughing as you spend time together. This project has it all. The results are beautiful. Imagine how proud you both will be when you wear your bracelets for all to see. When anyone asks where you bought the bracelets, you will see the pride in your daughter’s face when she exclaims, “I made it!”

GATHER Materials Twist End Bangle, Darice® http://www.darice.com/ Mix and Mingle Glass Metal Lined Beads, Aqua/Pink, Pink/Rose, Purple/Mauve and Silver, Darice®

MAKE Test the bangle on your daughter’s wrist to see if the bangle will have to be made smaller. If it does need to be made smaller, take the ends of the bangle in your hands and gently, but firmly, push the bangle ends closer to each other. Keep trying the bracelet on the wrist until it is slightly larger than you need. The beads will make the bracelet sit tighter on the wrist. Decide the order to place the beads onto the bangle. Twist the end cap on the bangle to remove the end cap. Place the beads onto the bangle. Replace the end cap.

    Designer Showcase

The Experience The Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) holds one major trade show annually. This year, the 2014 trade show was held in Anaheim, CA. The Mega Show is filled with craft-industry manufacturers who exhibit their latest and greatest products in hopes of getting them into your local stores. The show is not open to the general pubic and you must be a member of the craft industry to get onto the show floor. Buyers from all over the world come to visit the show, which makes for an exciting event. Designer section members of CHA also exhibit in an area called the Designer Showcase, which I find to be a great opportunity to get my craft-design company exposure at the show. Because the show is an important event for craft-related companies, preparation for the show starts months in advance. All companies think about their products or services and how best to display them to the attendees of the show. One of the first items to consider, as an exhibiting craft designer, is what my message will be to potential clients. When someone walks past my table, I want them to understand that I am one of the top CHA Designer Section members and I provide top-quality services. All my decisions are based on that premise. Next, it is important for me to make sure my brand is attractive, delivers the right message and that every item on that table showcases my brand in the best possible light. Since my brand showcases beautiful projects, I make sure to display my best projects that speak to my brand’s look.

Hands-On Labs PhotoTalk™ with Carol Heppner Outstanding photography is my signature look and part of my brand. I was asked to host a class on photography in the Hands-On Labs educational program at CHA. The class focused on what a general crafter needs to know when photographing their work in natural light. These days, many crafters need to make sure their photographs portray the crafter’s work so the craft looks the best it can look. Competition for magazine submissions is tough these days and producing high-quality photographs to submit to magazines is more important than ever. A photograph can make or break a sale of an article or of the craft work itself, so it is important to know how to make the photograph sell the work it captures. Make sure to follow my blog for updates on future classes. 2014 CHA Mega Show Lobby

    CHA at Night

Services I am hired by manufacturers and magazines to design projects around the manufacturer’s products and write the step-by-step instructions so crafters can reproduce the project. I also offer quality photographs of the projects. Many of my projects are elegant, but are quite easy to recreate. My goal is to provide craft inspiration for a creative life. The projects that I use in my display are designed to give visitors an idea of my company’s brand

CHA: The Setup Like many of my fellow designers, I bring my display in my luggage when I fly. When you arrive on the show floor, there are huge manufacturer’s crates with products and display elements scattered about the show floor. There is a lot of work to be done in a short period of time. As you can imagine, everyone is busy putting their booths and displays together. There is very little time to network at that time. After setting up my table, I do have a few minutes to walk around the show floor and see the start of the booths. It always amazes me to see the finished booths just before the start of the show. There is a great deal of talent and inspiration at the show. CHA does provide opportunities to network after hours. This year, they had a great event set outdoors at the convention center. I loved escaping the cold temperatures of the East Coast for some warm temperatures of the West Coast.

Manufacturer Displays If you attend the CHA show every year, you see the same exhibitors and enjoy building relationships with the representatives from those companies. One company that was right next to the Designer Showcase was Design Master. This year, Design Master http://www.dmcolor.com/ was showing their new TintIt™, fast drying sheer color spray. The spray is great for use on paper crafts, mixed media, flower design and general crafting. The depth of the color depends on how many layers you use. As seen on the fabric flowers in the photograph, they showed a white flower, a flower with one coat of the paint, a second coat of paint and how the flowers darkened with every coat that was applied. The fabric flowers were soft even after being sprayed with the paint. The box on which the flowers were sitting was also tinted in order to give the box an aged look. The tint also gave the box a richer feel. The silver bowls in the middle photograph were made with plastic spoons that were painted silver.
