In February we will enter the season of Lent, a 40-day season where we, as individuals, have an opportunity to “hit the reset button” of our lives. Lent is a time to slow down and be intentional… to reflect on our relationship with God and identify those things that get between or distract us from that relationship. Often we give up things like food or Starbucks or favorite television shows or the movies. However this year I want to invite you to do something different during Lent. It could be to give up something, or maybe it’s to take something on…a short walk each day to appreciate the beauty around you, listening to a podcast that expands your soul or your mind, spending intentional time in prayer at a specific time each day, not only talking to God but also listening, read your bible or a devotion every day. During this season of Lent let’s be intentional to ask, “How can I best know, grow, and show God’s love” for myself and others. Blessings! Kathy

Time to Hit Reset

I spent many years working with computers both in customer service and

software development for several companies. Often customers would call

frustrated because they couldn’t get the computer or the software program to

work just as they thought it should. Usually the problem was caused by

entering too many commands or hitting too many buttons that caused the

computer to stall or to freeze. Usually by the time they contacted me the

problem was beyond anything they fully understood or could describe, so the

solution was to tell the customer, “We need to reset your system.” Although it

was frustrating for the customer, it provided an opportunity to bring the

machine to a stable state and then determine the best next steps to resolve their

problem.

Last Saturday we had a meeting of many of our church leadership and

staff with Rev. Rob Bruce. We each had the opportunity to take a survey of the

ministry of our church and took intentional time to look at a summary of all

our answers about our church, our programming, and where we find ourselves

in our church life cycle. In many areas we were in agreement, in others we

found we were many people with many different opinions. However on

Saturday, we worked together to identify how we are currently fulfilling

Christ’s call by asking, “What do we do well?” and “What can we do better?”

We didn’t walk away with a new vision statement because we do want

CFUMC to be “a place to know, grow and show God’s love”, however, we

did find some clarity on some areas where we have opportunities to do more

and be more present in Commerce in the name of Christ.

In February we will enter the season of Lent, a 40-day season where we,

as individuals, have an opportunity to “hit the reset button” of our lives. Lent is

a time to slow down and be intentional… to reflect on our relationship with

God and identify those things that get between or distract us from that

relationship. Often we give up things like food or Starbucks or favorite

television shows or the movies. However this year I want to invite you to do

something different during Lent. It could be to give up something, or maybe

it’s to take something on…a short walk each day to appreciate the beauty

around you, listening to a podcast that expands your soul or your mind,

spending intentional time in prayer at a specific time each day, not only talking

to God but also listening, read your bible or a devotion every day. During this

season of Lent let’s be intentional to ask, “How can I best know, grow, and

show God’s love” for myself and others.

Blessings!

Second Sunday Report

The Results:

January 14th-

Our Congregation brought 10 bags of breakfast

food and $450 in monetary donations

Our Next Challenge:

February 11th–

Spaghetti and Sauce

Also, there is always a need for breakfast items,

cornbread and biscuit mix, and instant potatoes.

THE OPPOSITE OF RICH IS…

“Free us for joyful obedience.” You may recognize that phrase as part of the congregational prayer that we sometimes pray just before we receive commun-ion. That prayer describes why you and I exist: joyful obedience. You and I ex-ist to worship. The more we realize that, the more we approach the experience

of pure joy.

Tithing of your time, talents, and money has less to do with tithing than it does with freedom. Tithing is not about percentages. Tithing and giving are about being part of what is holy, eternal, and the truly “good life.” I could never go back to where I was before I began tithing and retain the joy I have found in obedience and giving. I like being free. I give to be free. I give to stay free. Through tithing, I receive more than I give—the joy of obedient worship in giving. Perhaps the opposite of

rich is free.* *Modified, embellished, and personalized from the writings of Herb Miller

Preschool Registration It is hard to believe that it is time to register for the next school year. Church Members

and current students are guaranteed a spot if registered by February16. All spots not

filled on February 16 will be released on February 27. Due to problems this year, we

cannot hold a spot without the registration fee. If you cancel your spot by June 1, you

will receive half of registration fee back. We will fill up quickly, so do not let the

February 16 deadline pass you by. There may not be any spots available later in the

spring. If you need an application please call preschool at 706-335-9589 or have any

questions, please let us know. —-Renee Moon, Preschool Director

I know that running a road race is a potentially dangerous activity. I should not enter and run unless I am

medically able and properly trained. I agree to abide by any decision of a race official relative to my ability

to safely complete the run. I assume all risks associated with running this event including but not limited to

falls, contact with other runners, the effects of weather, traffic, and the conditions of the road and all such

risks being known and appreciated by me. Having read this waiver and knowing these facts and in

consideration of accepting my entry, I wave and release Commerce First United Methodist Church, all

sponsors, and the town of Commerce for claims or liabilities of any kind arising out of my participation in this

Hello Church family! Its time once again to dust off those running shoes and join us for the annual

Hearts for Honduras 5K road race. This year will mark our 4th 5K to date and we are pleased to report

that funds raised have increased every year at this event. If you have not done this event before it is A

LOT of fun….who knew running could be so fun right? If you can’t race--then jog, if you can’t jog—

walk, if you can’t walk—show up for breakfast and some fellowship, and we of course welcome

donations whether you can participate or not! ALL proceeds are going directly to our Church’s annual

mission trip to Honduras where we participate in construction projects, vacation bible school,

establishing relationships with the locals, and sharing God’s word. Please help us through finances,

prayer, and participation to know, grow, and show God’s love with our friends in Honduras! The race

will begin March 17th at 8:00am at the Cherry St parking lot. Please see the fliers for additional details.

Any questions should be directed to Kelsey Harbin at 706-870-2511 OR Stewart Smith at 678-327-3160.
