“Compliments to the GSC; they provide an excellent venue
allowing us to play (pickleball) 5 days a week. Groton is very lucky
to have the support of the taxpayers for the facility.”
- Chuck Stevens
See page 8 for pickleball program information!
During the months of April and May, we asked you to share your feedback with us about how we are doing here at the Groton Senior Center. Thank you to everyone who took a moment to stop and answer our questions and o2ers some tips and share ideas!
Here are just a few of the comments we received on the notes posted around the building:
“Friendly, fun, great sta-, good
programs, great lunch program”
Thank you for
your feedback!
“I like walking in the place in
wintertime plus the gym.”
“I love the sunshine choir and many
day trips, lunches are great, sta- is
great”
“Need more activities for men -
such as workshop.”
“Please open on weekend.”
We may not be able to accomodate everyone’s requests or make all of your great ideas happen, but we strive to be a place that o2ers what you need. Look for new programs and changes in the coming months that reflect the feedback we received.
We also conducted a focus group for people age 55 and up who do NOT currently use the Senior Center, and we got a great response from those non-users as well.
We were surprised to learn that many people did not know they were eligible for programs here at age 55, or that they did not know we o2er transportation to and from many programs and special events.
Thank you for continuing to share your thoughts and ideas with your friends and sta2 here at the Groton Senior Center. We value your feedback!

GAMES & STRATEGYThe Groton Senior Center o"ers a variety of games for group play and individual play. Strategy games promote
mental stimulation and socialization. Research has shown that Bingo and other games are good for the brain,
stimulating memory and attention skills and facilitate social interaction. Our games programs include a variety of
levels from basic to more challenging options.
Mah JonggMah Jongg is a game that originated in China. It is
commonly played by 4 players (with some 3-player
variations found in South Korea and Japan). The game
and its regional variants are widely played throughout
Eastern and South Eastern Asia and have a small
following in Western countries. Similar to the Western
card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy,
and calculation and involves a degree of chance.

TECHNOLOGY CENTER
Here at the Technology Center, computer training is fun for both the students and volunteer teachers. Our goal is
to smooth the pathway from computer literacy (knowing the basics) to fluency (using the computer as a tool for
specific tasks) to mastery (using the computer to share knowledge and wisdom in one or more areas.) Everyone
learns at their own pace. The Technology Center serves all students at their own pace along the pathway. Stop in
and see us today!

10 Discover 55+, May 2016
Club 55 Vice President:
Marilyn CharetteA native of Newport, Rhode Island,
Marilyn Charette, came to Groton
via the Navy and her deceased
husband, Commander Al Charette.
A Boston trained nurse, she worked
here at the Groton Senior Center
(GSC) clinic with giving physicals,
blood pressure monitoring and
hearing testing in the mid-eighties.
She left the GSC clinic to work at
the NL Submarine Base in Groton in
the Navy Marine Corp Relief Society.
Interestingly her boss was our own,
Barbara Winkler, who at the time
was its Executive Director.
Marilyn’s life as a Navy wife has been
adventurous and exciting as she
followed her husband up the ranks
from enlisted to a commissioned
ensign within seven years to his final
destination as Commander. One
of their most exciting assignments
was Washington, D.C. where her
husband’s position required her to be
Embassy hostess. Marilyn brought
that experience to GSC last year
as the volunteer host for “Club 55”
and as Vice President continues to
supervise our hospitality volunteers.
Marilyn and Al Charette were a
beautiful couple with a love story to
match. They met when she was 12
and he was 16 in Newport. Al went to
California to live on a ranch and be a
cowboy but he kept in touch with his
girl. When she was in nursing school
and was hitting some rough spots
he was the one who encouraged her
and kept her focused. They married
after she finished school and he
entered the Navy.
Marilyn and Al have three grown
children, two boys and a girl, who live
in Groton. Al was also a volunteer
at the Groton Senior Center and
was instrumental in setting up the
computer center with Peter Petrides.
Our Vice President volunteered to
be on the board because she wants
to reach out to Seniors and help
find ways to include people and
make them feel comfortable at GSC.
She hopes to fill a void in their lives
through programming and social
activities. In June meet another
“Club 55” board member.
