The previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, who brought Chabad-Lubavitch to America, once recalled a thought-provoking con-versation between his father and predeces-sor, R. Sholom Dov-Ber, and a Chassid:

The Chassid asked: “Rebbe, what is a Chas-sid?”

R. Sholom Dov-Ber an-swered: “A Chassid is a street-lamp-lighter. A street-lamp-lighter has a pole with fire. He knows that the fire is not his own, and he goes around lighting all lamps on his route.”

The Chassid asked: “But what if the lamp is in a deso-late wilderness?”

The Rebbe answered: “Then, too, one must light it. Let it be noted that there is a wil-derness, and let the wilderness feel ashamed before the light.”

“But what if the lamp is in the midst of a sea?”

“Then one must take off the clothes, jump

into the water and light it there!”

“And that is a Chassid?”

The Rebbe thought for a long moment and then said: “Yes, that is a Chassid.”

When the Rebbe recounted this conver-sation, he added: The lamps are there, but they need to be lit. It is written, “The soul of man is a lamp of Hashem”, and it is also written, “A mitzvah is a lamp and the Torah is light”. A Chassid is he who puts his personal af-fairs aside and goes around lighting up the souls of Jews with the light of Torah and Mitzvos. Jewish souls are in readiness to be lit. Sometimes they are around the cor-ner. Sometimes they are in a wilderness or at sea. But there must be someone who

disregards personal comforts and conve-niences and goes out to put a light to these lamps. That is the function of a true Chas-sid.

Dear YKM 5771,The Gemara relates an interesting story:A man was travelling through the desert, hungry, thirsty,

and tired, when he came upon a tree bearing delicious fruit and affording plenty of shade, underneath which ran a spring of water. He ate of the fruit, drank of the water, and rested beneath the shade.

When he was about to leave he turned to the tree and said: “Tree, Oh, Tree! With what should I bless you?

“Should I bless you that your fruit be sweet? Your fruit is already sweet.

“Should I bless you that your shade be plentiful? Your shade is plentiful. That a spring of water should run beneath you? A spring of water runs beneath you.”

“There is one thing with which I can bless you: May it be the will of Hashem that all the trees planted from your seeds should be like you...”

Looking back at the summer, I think “what could have been different?”

Sports were a smashing success! The refs were well trained, the fields were gorgeous, the indoor gym was so (fill in the blank) and the stats were updated regularly!

Davening was a smashing success! So many different Cha-zonim, every bochur davening with a Chayus!

Trips were a smashing success! From… to… (You get the point!)

The only thing I can wish for, is that all the good things you learned this past summer and all the good memories you have, should inspire you to keep on trucking forward, being the best bochur you can be!

I would like to end off with thanking all of you for hav-ing such a good attitude, even when things didn’t go your way (for example not going to Wall Mart - besides room 3…). You never let it put you down. Keep it up.

May Hashem help, we should all merit the coming of Moshiach now!

Sincerely,Avremi

The culmination of the past few weeks invigorating experiences comes with throbbing partings. In Oholei Torah language that means “it’s over, we’re done, wopdi doo!” Now that we are taking leave of each other let me give you some words of encouragement. Don’t take this as another rebuke or some speech that you want to fall asleep during, but rather as something which will give you fond memories and which will cause your Neshoma to give a little shake as well. This past summer was a roller-coaster of thrills. We all had our highs and lows, me included, yet we can learn so much form everything that transpired.

As you all mature into fine Bochurim and adults, you will all real-ize that it’s not just one summer or a school year that will feel like a turbulent plane ride, rather that’s what life is all about. Trying hard and getting nowhere (at least it feels like nowhere) will happen again and again throughout your life. We see by Adom that he was cursed with this experience of working very hard to achieve not much of anything; if he would plant, plow, and harvest he would just get some thorns to eat. We see from here that life does not always produce the results we want. Regardless of what comes from our actions we must act and do the job that was entrusted to the Jewish people: change the world.

It all starts with us first; we must take all of our stupidities and throw them away. We are like oil and all other nations like water, we must be above them, not go down to their level. Will this job be easy? No; will we see results? probably not for a long time, but we must do what Hashem wants anyway. You know just looking back at the summer and thinking over some of the things that happened, how so many of you changed for the better, even in one small way. Take TBP for example, over half of you guys did it, and for a few weeks straight! I’m sure some of you never dreamed to do it, but with a little extra push you were able to produce some fruit and had a good time too. The way some of you reviewed for tests and put some strong effort into work sheets, if its more then what you did in school this year, to me that’s a compliment not a complaint (lol). It’s like I mentioned many times this summer it’s “not about learn a lot, but about try a lot”. The one line of Gemora that took you an hour to understand makes Hashem so proud that his child is doing what He asked from him. It’s not a nerdy thing to make Hashem happy or for that matter

the Rebbe proud to call you his Chosid, it’s all about the try factor. I suggest (like I have many times this summer) that we all try a

little harder this year to improve on something that we know we can improve on. Act on your own instinct not on the commands of what other people tell you. What I mean is look at yourself and ask what can be done to you by you to make yourself better and the world a more holy place. Why not start with something small, like some Shtus, some little petty thing you can do without, like talking during davining or going around with your shirt half open, just to name a few. Will it be easy to stop? probably not, but who cares? no one will start working for you, and if you start you will eventually see results.

There is a story (I shared it with some of you) about a Rabbi from New Jersey named Rabbi Tietz. He was very close to the Rebbe and would often travel to Russia back when you could not practice re-ligion there and the Jews were persecuted. He would go and bring to them different Jewish stuff like books and teffilin. One time the Rebbe sent him on a “mission” to Russia and when he returned he went to yichidus and told the Rebbe that he did what the Rebbe asked but he added “it was very difficult, but I was able to do it”. He thought the Rebbe would be impressed but the Rebbe’s response took him by surprise, the Rebbe said “since when do you have a contract with G-d for an easy life”.

Most of what we try to do with Torah and Mitzvos will not be easy, and we can’t demand that it should be, we just need to try a lot. This is the message I would like to impart to all of you: try, try, and try again. If a baby would give up when it feel down trying to walk for the first time, it would never learn to walk. All you need to do is have a goal in mind and a good tip for that is thinking about the Rebbe and what the Rebbe did. Because the Rebbe is someone we can relate to, at least a little bit, of what Hashem really wants. It’s up to us there is no one left, we are the ones who will end this Golus, and we can’t let the Rebbe down. I sign off with wishing you success in all that you do, and Hashem should shower you with blessings from his endless hand and we should soon see our Rebbe once more, together with the coming of Moshiach now!

Hey boys! I’m sure you remember that I’m not really the Mayor, no, I lost the election but I still love Rabbi and the camp. You know with that great watch Rabbi gave me I be-came so popular in the town I think I may win the election next time. I mean it’s pretty

fancy and when I was at the fair everyone was talking about it. Who knows maybe next year I’ll be Mayor again.

Enough about me, I just wanted to let you guys know, that on behalf of the 248 residents of … um make that 249, the McLiv-ers had a baby yesterday, we will really miss you all. It’s been so exciting to have our population nearly double for the last 7 weeks. After you leave I’m not sure what I’ll do, no lawn to mow, no showers to fix, and no more fun. When the camp is up and running I just want to go around finger waving at everybody I’m so happy! But shucks, time just goes by so fast and now it’s all over, what can you do.

Don’t tell no one, but I can’t wait for what they’ll get me next year, maybe it’ll be some free pop or ice cream! When you guys leave it makes me so sad inside but then I remember that Rabbi has me clean up the place for a few weeks and I don’t feel so sad anymore. Boy o boy do you guys leave a mess, I mean big time. Dirt, paper, garbage, and some other stuff I don’t even know what to call it, it takes time to clean it all up, but if Rabbi needs it you can count on me!

Everyone has a favorite part of the summer and mine was when the helicopter came. Remember the whole freeborn was there! But that wasn’t the best part for me. The best part for me was that I saw those sport fields and they looked great! Except those soccer nets looked a little crooked, I think. Anyway until next time I’ll just go home and cry, after a few days I’ll get over it, call rabbi for some help and do what I do (not sure what that is but I’ll figure it out).

Can’t wait till next year when the next bunch of you hooligans shows up, bye for now.

- Mark(Former) Mayor of Freeborn, MN

To My Dear Friends, Shalom U’Bracha! I would like to start off by thanking Hashem for such a beautiful and successful summer. During the past 7 weeks we all grew together in our connection to Hashem and our bond to the Rebbe. Reb Mendel Futerfas spent several years of his life in a Soviet labor camp. He later related that one of the ways that he kept his sanity was to constantly engage his mind in the Chassidic practice, set forth by the Baal Shem Tov, that “From everything that a person sees or hears, he should learn a lesson in his service to Hashem.” Some very profound insights came from some very unusual teach-ers.For instance, one of the prisoners claimed to be a tightrope walker.Reb Mendel didn’t believe him because he couldn’t imagine why a person would waste his time walking on a rope and risk fall-

ing on his head, when he could just walk on the ground like everyone else. But when the evil Stalin died and the government eased up the pressure on the camps, some of the inmates decided to make a celebration and the tightrope walker saw his chance to prove himself. He found a long thick rope somewhere in the camp, at-tached it to the side of a building about ten feet above the ground, stretched it to another building about fifteen yards away and attached it there at the same height.A crowd gathered around. Reb Mendel was one of the first to get interested, and he explained what happened:“First he climbed up onto the rope, took a few steps, lost his balance and fell. But he knew how to fall, like a cat. He waited a few seconds and climbed up again and fell again the same way. But eventually he started walking,

To my Tayere Talmidim,As the summer comes to its close, I look back and notice how fast it flew by! At such a time, it is necessary for one to look back at the summer that has gone by, learn from what he has gone through, and see how he can apply it in the future. Before the summer, while preparing to come here I was looking over the things that was to be covered. I aimed big and dreamt grandi-ose plans (at least for myself!!), but looking now at the end of the summer, we covered one full page of or at) תוס‘ and רש"י with גמרא least most of them!!), so seemingly I should think that it was a bit of a waste of time!!! But really this teaches all of us a very mean-ingful lesson: Sometimes in life the quantity is not the main thing, but rather the quality. Not necessarily is achievement measured by how much was done, but rather, how it was done. So in our case I think it is safe to say that the amount we covered was in a very qualitative manner… And of course it would not be right not to mention the fun things we did as well… and just for the

record, our class had the most ‘extra-recess’ time during שיעור!!!Along the same lines, there is a story brought down in the גמרא about the תנא ר‘ חנינא בן דוסא, who wanted to bring a beautiful stone as a donation to the בית המקדש, but the stone was way too heavy for him to carry alone. On the side of the road he noticed five men standing, so he asked them to help him carry the stone to the בית המקדש. They told him they’ll do it for a cheap price, on condition that he helps them out with putting a hand on the rock. So that is exactly what he did, and as soon as he placed his hand on the rock and he looked around him, he noticed that he was already in ירושלים, standing near the בית המקדש. The point of this story is quite clear: the main thing is the effort that one puts into what he is doing, not necessarily the amount that one does.If you didn’t yet get what I am trying to say, basically: whatever you do in life, and wherever you go, the main focus should be on the quality of what you are doing, more than on the quantity. With blessings for a happy & sweet new year, Meir

Chaim & Yankel were once driving an RV (a.k.a. a mitzvah tank) down the highway, as they reached an overpass, they noticed that the clearance was for seven 7 half feet, and I’m sure you know a mitzvah tank is taller than that. So Chaim turns to Yankel & says: “hey! there’s no cops, let’s go for it!” And the rest... you can just imagine what happened!

As the new yeshivah year is coming upon us, one should know that there are two ways to approach it: 1) to do only what is demanded of you, 2) to do what you are truly capable of. There are many which yeshivas de-

mand of them what they are capable of. B”H all of us can do more than that. Now one may say: “what’s the problem? I got a 100% on the test!” But like the Chaim in our story, it’s YOU (not the cop\mashgiach\teacher) who loses out. I’m sure you have heard plenty of times from older people ww if they would be in yeshiva now they would learn 24/7. Now although there is no guarantee for that (!), but their point is true.

I once heard a mashal by a farbrengen: there was once a contractor who was hired to build

Page 9: YKM Journal 5771

and then dancing from one foot to the other to the rhythm of the clapping onlookers.“Then he got to the end, turned around, danced back to where he started, and climbed down amidst the applause and cheering of the crowd.“After shaking everyone’s hand he walked over to me and said with a satisfied smile on his face; ‘Well Rabbi, what do you think now?’“I told him I was impressed, but I couldn’t help wondering how he did it. How could he walk on such a thin rope with-out falling off? After much prompting he finally revealed his secret. ‘I fix my eye on where I’m going,’ he said, ‘and never even think about falling’.“He waited a few seconds for me to digest the answer, and then said: ‘Do you know what the hardest part was? Turning around! When you turn around you lose sight of the goal

for a second.”From this story, R’ Mendel learned that one must make a goal and keep focus! This is the message I want to leave off with; we all need to have a goal! If you have a goal, everything will be good for you Biruchniyus & Bigashmiyus. At this point of our lives, our goal needs to be, to be the best Bochur possible! We can spectate how other Bochurim are Davening and learning, or we can be active players. Let’s choose to be active players!Hatzlacha Rabba & Besoras Tovas!!May We Be Zocheh To Dance Bimhereh Viyamenu Bibeis Hamikdash HashlishiBiahavah, Yossi

I know I’m doing something nobody else is doing, I’m writing a short letter. But guys this is what we have learnt this summer; We learn even though it is the summer. We learn hard even though no-body else does. We learn מפרשים even though nobody else does. (We have illegal Farbrengens even though nobody else does?!) We do things because they are correct, not because of what people say or do.I am very happy to say that over the summer each one of you in your own way has risen higher than what people say or do and pushed yourselves to do the right thing. I hope that you guys continue to push yourselves higher than the world around you, next year in Yeshiva and in your future lives.I look forward to hearing only good news about your con-tinuous growth in your personal lives. a house. Now this contractor had a tendency to always cut down wherever possible, and do the bare minimum to save money. After many months of hard work on building this specific house, the supposed buyer approached the contractor, took the keys, and handed them over to him, and said the house is yours to live in. It is quite clear how much he now regrets his cutting corners to ‘save money’. The same is true in our situation. One can do the bare minimum, but at the end of the day the house belongs to you, so you would obviously put

in the extra effort, i.e., learning more gemoro than the ‘quota’, learning a sicha after seder etc., in order to make your ‘house’ the most beautiful one.

It’s been a pleasure spending time, and learning with you all, may you have a successful year.

Dear Menachem, Eli, Ben, Yechiel, Aharon, Shmuel, Eli, Nachi, Me-nachem, Yossi, Moshe, Shlomo, Sholom, and let’s not forget about Mendy (Gitter),“Keytzad Ho’Aydim Na’ssim Zommimin”, WOW it feels just like yester-day when we were all sitting around the tables (we actually had all three of them) in the first learning class and we heard those words (hopefully you guys still remember their meaning), now as I sit in ‘Maytag Megaload Laundry’ (i.e. the laundromat YKM uses) it feels just like yesterday when we first met. Indeed the summer did fly by. Whether it was the learning with tremendous Hasmodah in Zal (yeah right!), the special diet you guys put me on - running around daily chasing each one (not necessarily each one, but it sounds better) of you into Zal, or the Physical Education (i.e. sports) you earned instead of Shiur, we all grew from the experiences we had.

It could very well be we don’t realize how much we actually did achieve in this short span of time, but indeed once all the dust settles and we’re all sitting comfortably at home relaxing, it will hit us all how much we actually did gain.As the cycle of my dryer comes close to a finish, I would like to end off with a message for you all to take with you for this upcoming year in Yeshiva, and many years beyond. There was a great chossid by the name of Reb Mendel Futerfas [who is famed for his keen understand-ing of taking lessons from experiences he had, or stories he heard] once related the following tale.In Czarist Russia, the soldiers under the Czars command were prohibited from consuming any alcoholic beverages. One night in one of the many army posts that were spread out all across Russia, an impulsive fever overcame the soldiers that resided in these particular barracks. They

Dear Chevre,Baruch Hashem we spend an enjoyable summer together. A summer in an atmosphere of Chassidus is no small thing. Take a minute and think what you have learned this summer; something your דערהערט a little more then be-fore, something that warmed your Jewish heart. Take that thought and translate it into action – make a החלטה, even a baby step (i.e. a small one). Strengthen what needs a tune up; making ourselves better people.I would like to share with you something I have realized this summer. everyone is unique; you have (דערהערט)something that no one else has. One must capitalize on it, and utilize it to its full potential. There are times when one lacks enthusiasm in Yeshiva life. He does it, but… you know what I mean; it feels

dry and meaningless. That is an opportune time to focus on what you enjoy doing, that area in learning and Davening, that area of being a Chossid that you connect with, and that will help you do everything else with a Chayus!I once heard a story that illustrates the above. A Bochur studying in a not-Lubavitcher Yeshiva had a problem. His teachers demanded the highest level of learning, covering much ground and gaining a deep understanding into the ma-terial, but he felt it was not fair. Other Bochurim had “faster heads” then he did; what took them one hour to understand took him an entire day. He discussed this with his Rosh Yeshiva, but was not satisfied with the answers he present-ed. B’hashgacha Protis he met a Lubavitcher

filled with large barrels, and it stopped before the freez-ing Jew. “Hey Moshke!” The wagon-driver yelled. “Hey! Want a ride? If you can find a place, jump in!” he stuck out his hand. With renewed strength the old chassid gratefully grabbed the hand, pulled himself up onto the wagon, then onto the barrels, and finally wedged himself down between them as the wagon began to move. After a few minutes huddled between the barrels he was abruptly reminded that he was freezing, and not being able to move didn’t help. That was when he noticed a small spout sticking out of one of the barrels. With a shivering hand he turned the handle over the spout. No, it wasn’t wine or oil, not vinegar or anything else, it was...vodka! “Ivan” he yelled to the driver “I need

The story is told about a chassid who every year would be-gin walking by foot to the Tzemach Tzedek, in order to spend some time with the Rebbe. Now this was no easy task, because the weather was usually freezing and snowy at that time of year in Russia. It became even more difficult as our chassid grew progressively older each year, but he kept it up. Until finally, one year, on a lonely road in the middle of some snowy forest his “batteries finally ran out”; his legs simply would not move another step. He was on the verge of collapsing in the snow when suddenly he heard something in the distance. It was a wagon! It sounded far away but the sounds were un-mistakable. Wheels crunching on the snow and the plodding of horses. It didn’t take long until it reached him; it was a wagon

deserted their posts heading to the nearby tavern, and started to become merry. As the night progressed their ‘merriness’ reached new heights and one after the other they became readily intoxicated. Suddenly a chilling mes-sage reached their ears “the Czar is inspecting the bar-racks!” - As he periodically did from time to time. A chaotic rampage ensued as all the soldiers ran for their lives, but due to the fact that their BAC was well above the legal limit, as they ran they started to stumble one by one and fall into a deep slumber. As the Czar caught whiff that his soldiers were all missing in action, he discovered their whereabouts and proceeded to the tavern. When he arrived, the scene that met his eyes was very disturbing. Hundreds of drunken soldiers sprung all over the road heading toward the barracks. As the Czar passed he signaled to the general accompanying

him “these two are to be killed”, “the one over there ex-ecuted”, and in this fashion he continued on his way. After a while the general mustered the courage and asked the Czar for an explanation; why some soldiers get to live and others the opposite? The Czar replied those that lie facing the barracks he spares, but those that lie facing the tavern he would not spare.Reb Mendel understood from this tale a very important les-son. Even when we fall - we don’t use out our time wisely in Zal, didn’t Daven every word properly etc. - we have to know which way we our facing. We have to know that this that I did or didn’t do is wrong and can’t accept it as who I am. This lesson will Iy”h help all of us to grow in Yiddeshkeit and Chassidishkeit, and this will hasten the coming of the Geula, may it come speedily in our days.Yours truly, Levi

freezing to death. But… if just a little bit goes INSIDE... Ahhh. That is a completely different story! Then he becomes warm and alive. In fact then, he can even warm up the whole world around him as well...”As we are all starting our next year in yeshiva we are sure to surround ourselves with barrels of chasidishkait, with davening and learning, nigleh and chassidus, and most importantly chassidis’she farbren-gens. But if we let it stay around us we will stay cold, freezing cold. The only way we can keep ourselves warm is if we take it inside, our learning becomes part of us, our Davening become part of us, and the farbrengens are internalized, Only then can we become warm.and then we are able to make our surroundings warm.Avremi P.S. Artscroll is a deep fryer.

Chossid and told him what was weighing on his heart. As we all know, a Chossid knows that when you have a question you turn to the Rebbe; and that is what he did. The Rebbe’s response was: The Gemara (in Kiddushin) tells us, “Ani Nivraisi L’shamesh Es Koini” – I was created to serve my Creator. There is no one size fits all which can be expected from us. Rather we have to use the tal-ents and interests that Hashem gave us, and use it for what? To serve Him. Continuing with what I wrote earlier, we must con-stantly remember: A Yid must always be filled with energy and excitement. If not, nothing is going to be accomplished! I wish that you take the spirit of YKM and let it carry you throughout the coming year. May you only grow from one level to the next

in all that is holy and pure. With Hashem’s help, we will see each other real soon in Yerushalayim (that is where I will be learn-ing this coming year) with the coming of Moshiach Now!Ephraim

a little of your merchandise here, I’m freezing! I’ll pay, I promise. Can I take a small cup?” “Of course, my friend” shouted the driver over his shoulder. “As much as you need! Sure is cold out here!”The second cup was better than the first, and in a minute he was warm. He was happy! He was going to the Rebbe. Before he knew it they had reached Lubavitch. The driver helped him out of his “seat”, and they warmly parted. Our Chassid made straight for the Shul where he immediately gathered everyone around him and said he wanted to tell them something.“Today I learned a very great lesson” he began, occasion-ally rubbing his hands to warm up. “You know that the Torah The Torah is supposed to make you warm and happy. The Governors Association is a body of people who look like they run the country. Every small detail is managed by this special group.

As the saying goes “two Jews – three opinions”, everything is a dis-cussion. Decisions are made based on the majority states, but till you get there, there is great negotiation. Here is a sample of topics that were brought to the table: What are the hot issues that affect YKM; The level of learning, Davening and Ahavas Yisroel that is felt in the air. Before a test, discussions took place, often ending in the wee hours of the morning, about exactly how many questions are to be written, how challenging should it be, and even where the test should take place! Likewise when it comes to matters like T.B.P. (and G.B.P.) there were very intense debates about what constitutes a participant (or the lack thereof).

Farbrengens: Remember the inspiring words you heard from LT Y.D. as you sat after lights out singing a niggun? Well nothing happens on its own. Much time and energy was invested in the planning of such beautiful events. What about arguments? Of course! We had plenty of that, trying to figure out a way that it would not conflict with other branches of government.

And let us not forget about the now famous Governors Mansion!

We have beautiful accommodations. Starting with the comfy mat-tresses, fresh linen daily. A fully stacked kitchen, and plenty of nosh to spare. Well… We wish. We just have two simple rooms, 1 ½ couches, and 4 fridges that work (sometimes). But we are very proud of it.

Another point about The Mansion: most of camps electricity is used to power our computers; and that’s why the fuse blows every five minutes! We have a screen per person; usually occupied by one of the talented LTs dedicated to higher learning. Worksheets on Gemara L’Iyun, the hard words of Shulchon Aruch, and don’t forget M.C. amazing Girsha Shiur, worksheets plus!

But the truth is there is a much lighter side to our committee. Far-brenging, talking in learning (Yes! Learning!), or just venting a little is what happens behind our doors. A committee is not a number of individuals; it is a single unit working toward a common goal. Chas-sidim ein Mishpacha!

Well that’s all for now,

Yours truly,

The Governors of Florida, California, Illinois, Port Washington, East-ern Parkway, Crown Street, & The Empire (Blvd.)

I wanted to start this piece with something epic, and I could not think of anything more epic (except football and maybe the person reading this journal*).This summer has been one of the best of my life. I loved the op-portunity you provided me, and how you gave me helpful tips on how to improve.I think the hardest part of this summer was adjusting to the fact that I would not be able to make everyone happy. In the past I

have worked for smaller groups and I could do more for the indi-vidual wants and needs of every camper, to make them feel more at home. This is just not possible in a camp this size. I wish it was. But it provided me with an invaulable learning experience.

BBC ExClusivE REpoRt:

My name is Tom Crandon. Today I interviewed a man that we can all learn a lot from, his name is Ari Dorf-man. He is the cook at YKM over night camp based in Freeborn Minnesota. This is a small excerpt from his interview (The interview will be airing in its interiority Sunday night on prime time Farbreng box).TC: Sir it truly is an honor to meet you. How did you get such a prestigious position at an institution of this sublime caliber?AD: Tom, I can assure you the honor is all mine. I have known the Dean Rabbi Wilhelm for sometime as we pray in the same synagogue. When he came over to me and offered me a chance to prove myself in this job it proved too hard to resist.TC: Did you have any reservations before you accepted this job?AD: Yes. The main one was if I could handle all the intensive labor involved. Once I traveled to the camp estate I saw that the help was spectacular. I knew that once I was there we would be a great team.TC: So if I was to ask what one thing enabled you to succeed in the way you did you would say it was because of your team?AD: Without a doubt I have seen many times that you can have many people working side by side but not together I would call this an issue of epic proportion. After a time we gelled so well that I felt it was time to make a name that would show how we had become forged as one. That name is team K or K Company.TC: Wow! That’s remarkable you remind me of the best parts of the greatest people I have ever met.

Dear Talmidim,As I sit at my desk at almost 4 am, thinking

about this most awesomest summer, spending time with you all was truly great. But then it struck me, what made this summer better then the past? Was it the trips? Well I had been on all the trips before this year; Was it sports? Well I didn’t play sports. Then I remembered what my learning director told us when I was in camp, a man once came to a wise man with a fly in his hands and asked him if the fly is alive or dead. The wise man answered, it depends on what you make of it.

When I look back at the summer I really think you all can give yourself a pat on the back. You all made the best of everything. It is this attitude that you should keep with you through your whole life.

I must make mention that the staff we have this summer, there is no doubt in my mind that they made so much of the summer a success. From re-vile in the morning to learning class and sports, they really have shown true dedication, all I can say is Thank You. May Hashem give you the power to be as devoted in everything you do and keep on giving the Rebbe “nachas”.

I would like to thank the Rebbe for giving us the guidance and Brochos in making this summer the success that it was.

I hope that you will take all the lessons you learnt with you and keep in touch with all the friends that you made.

Sincerely,

Yitzi Smith

To the Dearest Rooms 123456,

W e would like to begin by clarifying why we chose to write one joint letter. Every summer, in every

camp journal, in every camp, every counselor writes a letter to their bunk stating the ac-complishments and fun that took place in the bunk throughout the summer. But we are not in a camp, AND THERE ARE NO BUNKS IN CAMP. There are rooms, where you sleep. There are other bochurim with whom you share the room. But these are friends, not bunkmates.

Now that that is off our chest, let’s talk a little about the summer we just had. Of course it flew by, ‘cause time flies

when you are having fun. It wasn’t too long ago that Yanky met you all by the airport, then you met Levi by the shul in St. Paul, and Motti and Arye were the first to greet each and every one of you in Freeborn, MN. You might not even remember going to the water park and that bbq on the first day, and by the end of day 1 you guys were already exhausted. Of course, that was just the start. Before long we were going paintball shooting and an over-night, and the highlight of the trip… getting sun burnt!!! We’re sure you remember when we stopped by that gas station for slurpees, and sat down for that kumzitz right there in the parking lot. Wow the looks the workers there were giving us, but who cares we were having fun. We haven’t even mentioned any-thing about the grand trip (in part because we’re writing this before the trip so…) but you all remember how awesome that was!!

But we didn’t need to leave camp to have a good time. As a matter of fact, we counselors enjoyed the time you spent

in shiur more than anything else. Just kidding,

our favorite part of YKM was for sure reff-ing, especially when we got to ref (insert the first name that comes to mind). Seriously now, leagues were great this summer. We were al-ways impressed with how seriously you could compete against a friend during the game, but remember afterwards that it was just that - a game. The competition was amazing, with the last playoff spot coming down to the last day, but the fun was even better. On your way out, just stop past the board one more time and check how many touchdowns you caught, and how many goals you scored.

O ne of the highlights of every week for us was Shabbos. We really enjoyed the chance to sit and farbreng with you

guys, to listen to what you were thinking, and share what we could. Then to TBP! We are all amazed at what you guys accomplished there (check out the TBP page for all those stats). By the 4th Shabbos, over half the bochurim finished the “27 on the 7th”!! Really, that’s an incredible amount of Tanya learnt, and you all have something big to be proud of. And then motzoei shabbos we had those recap videos by melava malka. From start to finish, Shabbos was amazing every week.

I n was a short seven weeks, and it blew past us. We enjoyed every second with you guys, and we hope you had fun too. So when you

can’t fall asleep one night or just have a few spare minutes, go check out ykminnisota.com. Look through the pics and videos. Think back to each of those pictures, the friends you were with there, and the fun had together. You can find all of our contact info in the journal, so make sure to keep in touch; we can’t wait for the calls and emails.

Sincerely your counselors,

Arye, Yanky, Levi and Motti

The Rumor By: The Cripple

A lot of people wonder, how do ru-mors get blown out of proportion in camp. Well here is an incident that is just a small example of a regular rumor.

10:15 Breakfast THE INCIDENT- Choni B. fell down in Room 2 and Menachem H. helped him get up from the floor.

10:45 Learning Class (In Zal) – Me-nachem M. tells Eli B. that Men-achem H. pushed down Choni B.

11:15 Shiur – Eli B. tells Shlomo S. that Me-nachem H. pushed down Choni B., then Choni B. told Menachem H. that Canada sucks.

12:00 Break – Shlomo S. tells Men-del W. that Choni B. was making fun of Canada and then Menachem H. pushed him down and spat him in the face.

12:20 Chazara – Mendel W. tells Gershon G. that Choni B. told Menachem H. that he is a vio-lent Canadian. Menachem H. then punched him, laughed, and then gave him the hardest Rhino that left Choni B. crying on the floor in pain.

12:45 Shulchan Aruch – Gershon G. tells Menachem M. that Choni B. beat Menachem H. in UNO then called him a violent Canadian which made Menachem H. slam him into a table spit him in the face then did the most epic Rhino ever done in the history of man that left Choni B. unconscious for 2 hours.

1:30 Lunch – Menachem M. tells Ne-chamia B. That Choni B. beat Menachem H. at UNO and made fun of Canada then Menachem H. punched Choni B. lifted up a table, slammed him with it, spat him in the face, then gave him a Rhino. At this point Tom and Lopez come in and call Avremi.

To cut it short here is the story that is cir-culating around camp Choni B. slammed Menachem H. with a table then made fun of Canada. This made Menachem H. slam him, spit him in the face, and then gave him such a powerful Rhino that Choni B. couldn’t sit for the rest of the day. At this point Avremi came in and forced Menachem H. and Choni B. to clean up Room 3 while he and Ari S. threw corn chips at them that they bought in Wal-Mart.
