Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan.

Every year on erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan, Yidden all over the world recite the ancient, holy tefillah written by the saintly Shela"h some four hundred years ago for precisely this auspicious time.

Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan is the Yom Kippur of ruchniyus, of Torah, of drawing close to Hashem and His mitzvos.

Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan is a day of teshuvah, tefillah and tzedakah.

Teshuvah – The Chasam Sofer writes at the end

of Parashas B a m i d ba r that every erev Rosh Ch od e sh

Sivan ,

all the bnei yeshivah would fast and the day was declared a yom teshuvah. This was based on what is written in Parashas Yisro that on erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan the bnei Yisrael did teshuvah.

Tefillah- The saintly Shela"h, the leader of all of Klal Yisrael in his generation in both the revealed Torah and the hidden one, composed a moving prayer to be recited specifically on this special day, erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan.

Utzedakah- The Shela"h Hakadosh writes in the introduction to his tefillah that before reciting the tefillah, one should give tzedakah to worthy paupers.

Every Jewish heart is moved; every Jewish heart is touched.

Gedolei Hador

The date rolls around once again…

For the P Family, it's not "again." They never especially anticipated this date in the past. Every year, erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan arrived for them the way it did for the rest of the world. They recited Tefillas HaShela"h because all of Am Yisrael recited it on that day, and then went about their usual business. But last year, their world was turned

u p s i d e - d o w n . It was as if a hidden hand pushed their life off its regular track

and began revolving it around one particular point: Tzviki. Tzviki, the masmid of his yeshivah, the son around whom all their prayers revolved, whose sterling middos had earned him much admiration and respect… Tzviki was so different now…

Lately, every time he walked into the house, she cast a hurried, furtive glance in the direction of his head. Was his kippah still there, or was it gone?

It is impossible to describe what Tzviki's parents are going through. Impossible to describe. Now they are waiting for Tefilas HaShela"h like Moshiach.

For this I have come to appeal and plead before You, that my offspring and their descendants be proper, and that You find no imperfection or disrepute in me or them forever. May they be people of peace, truth, goodness and integrity in the eyes of G-d and man. Help them to become practiced in Torah …

ShidduchimThe M Family, too, is waiting longingly for this date. In their case, the burning issue is shidduchim. Yes, they have a problem, a real problem, one that can't just be brushed under the rug. Every person to whom their name is suggested conducts a thorough investigation and usually returns with a negative reply. The names that keep coming up again and again are rather humiliating. They don't want to push away their daughter's bashert

and they know they have to choose from whatever is available to them, but… They're not snobs, really they're not, but they long for a shidduch that suits their daughter. They recite Tefilas HaShela"h very frequently and they are particularly eager to recite it with great kavanah on the auspicious date of erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan.

Provide them with suitable marriage partners of scholarly and righteous parentage who will also be blessed with all that I have asked for my own descendants, since they will share the same fate.

Rav S tearfully recites this prayer every erev Rosh Chodesh. Can anyone who has not experienced a similar situation understand the meaning of poverty so choking that the family unit begins to break down as a result? We're talking about something far more serious than ordinary hardship. Left with no choice, Rav S has already asked for assistance, but it is so, so terribly difficult for him. On so many occasions, he felt his heart would explode with grief and shame. He simply cannot bear the awfulness of the situation. He has twelve children to support. His wife suffers from a medical condition and cannot help out. And he – just doesn't seem to have any mazel. Every possibility that surfaces disappears at the last minute. The poverty is wrecking his home, causing short tempers and flare-ups and bad feelings all around. To him, Tefilas HaShela"h is an anchor and on erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan he will wet the paper with his tears.

The mashgiach Hagaon Hatzaddik Harav Dan Segal, shlit"a

Provide every one of them with their needs with honor, and give them health, honor and strength, good bearing and appearance, grace and loving-kindness. May love and brotherhood reign among them.

In the home of the E couple, the tefillah is recited with heart-rending sobs. He in one corner, she in another. Their home has not yet been blessed with a child and their longing is intense.

Thus I entreat You, O Eternal, supreme King of kings. My eyes are fixed on You until You favor me, and hear my prayer, and provide me with sons and daughters who will also be fruitful and multiply, they and their descendents through all generations …

Both we and they will recite the tefillah. We'll recite it with tears, with dveikus, with fervor. The words will pierce our hearts; our thoughts and feelings and emotions

will center around one point: the pipe of blessing that is so full on precisely this day.

But aside from praying on their own, all these families and we, too, want to be included in the prayers of the Gedolei Hador, shlit"a, on this lofty and auspicious day. They, and we, too, are eagerly awaiting the time when the Gedolei hador wil pray on our behalf. They and we, too, long to be included in these moving occasions and have our names soar heavenward until they reach the Kisei Hakavod in a tefillah that splits the very heavens and blasts open locked gates.

T he Burning BushThe Gedolei Hador set aside whatever they're preoccupied with and whether it was their custom or not, they take the special, ancient tefillah in hand and recite it especially on behalf of contributors to Kupat Ha'ir. In the home of each Gadol Hador, the homes that serve as lighthouses for us, homes from where Torah and kedushah emanate to all of us – in each of these homes the members of the

household stand rooted to the spot in awe as a few precious moments are devoted to fervent, heartfelt prayer.

The Gedolei Hador carry the burden of the contributors to Kupat Ha'ir on a steady basis. They are like the Kohen Gadol, who carried the names of the Shevatim on his shoulders lezikaron so that every time he entered the holiest of sites Am Yisrael was remembered letovah. The Gedolei Hador are familiar with the names, which accompany them at all times. They carry the names of contributors in their hearts and daven for them and on this great day, they recite Tefilas HaShela"h on their behalf as well…

How much holiness is present at these occasions, how much power, how much spiritual ascension! In middle of an ordinary day, a huge window suddenly opens into kedushah, into yeshuah… Since the time of the saintly Shela"h, countless Yidden spanning numerous generations have recited this tefillah. Surely, their merit joins ours as well.

All at once, on the very same day, an impassioned tefillah bursts forth from every Jewish home and from ten

homes of gedolei and tzaddikei hador in particular: Maran Hagaon Harav Aharon Yehudah Leib Steinman, shlit"a; Maran Hagaon Harav Michel Yehudah Lifkowitz, shlit"a; Maran Hagaon Harav Nissim Karelitz, shlit"a; Maran the Nadvorner Rebbe, shlit"a; Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit"a; Maran Hagaon Harav Y.G. Edelstein, shlit"a; Maran Hagaon Harav Y. Hillel, shlit"a; Maran the Rebbe of Chernobyl, shlit"a; Maran the Rachmastrivka Rebbe, shlit"a; and Maran Harav David Abuchatzeira, shlit"a. At precisely the same time on erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan, ten of this generation's brightest lights will set aside whatever it is they are busy with and recite the prayer of the Shela"h with great fervor and passion on behalf of contributors to Kupat Ha'ir.

What a ma'amad that will be! What an event!

עמוד 6

Ten fiery torches rising to Shamayim. Ten pure hearts pouring themselves out in prayer to the King of Kings. One heartfelt tefilah, ancient and holy, ascending simultaneously from ten pure mouths at the auspicious time – erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan. Ten fiery torches joining together to form a flame so powerful it will surely destroy any kitrug, any angels of destruction, the Satan who constantly waylays our tefillos.

And on whose behalf are they praying? Whom are they representing?

You! You are the one standing in the center. You are the contributor to Kupat Ha'ir…

Who will merit having his name be uttered by the Gedolei Hador themselves? Who will merit being in all those tefillos recited by the Gedolei Hador?

Only contributors to Kupat Ha'ir…

Only contributors to Kupat Ha'ir, who are so close to the hearts of the Gedolei hador. Only they will have this huge zechus, unattainable any other way.

Rosh Chodesh Sivan is almost upon us. Before its arrival, the gedolei vetzaddikei hador will open special gates in Shamayim through which tens of thousands of names of contributors to Kupat Ha'ir will enter along with the Gedolei Hador's recitation of Tefilas HaShela"h on heir behalf, and they will merit incredible blessing.

When Maran Hagaon Harav Steinman himself personally prays, " … that they and I might all engage in the study of Your holy Torah, to learn and to teach, to observe and to do, and to fulfill with love all the words of Your Torah's teaching. Enlighten our eyes in Your Torah and attach our heart to Your commandments to love and revere Your Name…" it's an altogether different story. He's actually including himself in the tefillah, saying, "they and I…" We're all in the same boat; we're all with him. We are all just like his children, on whose behalf he prays in the very same breath as he does

for all contributors to Kupat Ha'ir.

When Maran Hagaon Harav Michel Yehudah Lifkowitz, shlit"a, beseeches, "and to You all my heart's secrets are revealed. For all my intention concerning the above is for the sake of Your great and holy Name and Torah…" the secrets of his pure heart say a lot more than the secrets of our hearts. His intentions truly are for the sake of Hashem's great and holy Name, with no diversions. When we are with him, we, too, are included in this purity of heart.

When Maran the Nadvorner Rebbe, shlit"a, prays "… compassionate Father, Who in compassion remembers His creatures for life! Remember us for eternal life, as our forefather Avraham prayed, "If only Yishmael would live before You," which the Sages interpreted as "live in reverence of You," – he, shlit"a, knows the true meaning of yiras Hashem and can therefore have proper kavanah when praying on behalf of contributors that they fear Hashem.

When Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit"a, davens "Help them to become practiced in Torah, accomplished in Scriptures, Mishnah, Talmud, Kabbalah, mitzvos, kindness, and good attributes, and to serve you with an inner love and reverence, not merely outwardly," it's a different tefillah, different as can be! He's already there, after all! He's praying from the position of one who is practiced in Torah, accomplished in Scriptures, Mishnah, Talmud, Kabbalah, mitzvos and kindness. And when he includes himself and his many merits, our inclusion in that tefillah accomplishes what nothing else can…

When Maran the Rachmastrivka Rebbe, shlit"a, rends heaven and earth with his cry: "… Answer me, Hashem, answer me!" gate after gate in Shamayim is stormed open. It is impossible to withstand such a cry – impossible!

And when Maran Harav Dovid Abuchatzeira, shlit"a, weeps as he says "… in the merit of our holy forefathers Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya'akov. For the sake of the fathers save the children, so the branches will be like the roots. For the sake

contributors to Kupat Ha’ir, erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan 5769

Maran the Lelover Rebbe, zt"l, reciting Tefilas HaShela”h on behalf of

of Your servant, David…" all of David Hamelch's prayers and his everlasting merit come and stand behind him. There is no comparison t when we daven on our own, no comparison…

Join Now!When we think about these prayer sessions and we know that we, too, will have the merit of being included, our excitement is insuppressible. It bubbles to the surface and brings tears to our eyes. When we sign up, from locations all over the world, we know we are signing up for exalted moments during which the Gedolei Hador will be davening for us, for us…

Is there anyone among us who feels this zechus is superfluous, unnecessary? Does anyone have a guarantee regarding all his offspring's dedication to Torah and mitzvos? Can anyone know for sure that all his descendants will marry worthy offspring whose health, good bearing, grace and loving-kindness can be taken for granted?

When you consider each of these things separately and then of all of them together – nothing could be more uplifting. Nothing

could be more wonderful. Close your eyes and picture your name leaving the lips of all the Gedolei Hador simultaneously and ascending higher and higher…

It's impossible not to jump out of your skin with excitement at the thought!

Another point: The Shela"h Hakadosh wrote that one should give tzedakah to a worthy pauper before reciting the tefillah. The Gedolei Hador have testified that when you contribute to Kupat Ha'ir, all the money goes to the worthiest paupers and that the gabba'im of Kupat Ha'ir are as trustworthy in their eyes as Rabi Chanina ben Teradyon. It is self-understood that the tefillah of the Shela"h is more effective when one fulfills his words completely and gives tzedakah to aniyim hagunim – via Kupat Ha'ir – and then has the Gedolei Hador pray the auspicious tefillah on one's behalf.

There is nothing more to add. There is no need to add anything more.

Fortunate are those who merit this zechus and halevai we should all merit it. Halevai!

An Entire Year at the

Tziyun of the

HakadoshShela”h

In addition to the prayers of the Gedolei Hador, Kupat Ha’ir will be sending a ba’al tefillah to recite this unique tefillah at the tziyun of the saintly Shela”h every single day from erev RoshChodesh Sivan 5771 until erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan 5772. Every single day throughout the year, our shliachwill knock at the gates of Shamay-im and invoke the saintly Shela”h’s vast merit. Every day throughout the year, he will beg and plead and be-seech Hashem on behalf of contributors to Kupat Ha’ir

at the holy site of the tziyun of the Shela”h, composer of the unique tefillah.

Read the tefillah. Read it! Think about having some-one recite it on your behalf every single day, with con-centration, with feeling, slowly and thoughtfully. Consider the awesome merit of having your name and your personal request mentioned every single day after the recitation of Tefi-las HaShel”ah at his holy tziyun.

Will You Merit to Donate?“But the money, 104 coins…” she says in a voice broken by seven years of suffering, seven years whose passing days and months have etched deep lines of sorrow into her heart.

“And the money to buy what we need for Shab-bos, for Yom Tov…” his tone rises. This Yom Tov, they won’t be going to her parents, or his, as they often do. No – they’ll be at home, and they have nothing with which to honor the festival…

“I know, but even so, it’s a segulah – Rav Chaim Palagi – can we really afford not to – can you re-ally bear the thought of waiting another year – an entire year?” Her tears start to fall. “We have challos in the freezer, we’ll work something out. But who needs food, anyway? I need a child – a child!”

“I still think that Hashem wants something dif-ferent from us,” he looks down at the blue-checked tablecloth, addressing it as if it were a shtender in the beis medrash. “The segulah isn’t k’vod hachag. We are commanded to honor Yom Tov – to honor Hashem…”

“So, maybe they’ll give you some of the money that people donate – after all, it has to be given to a talmid chacham who is poor and humble, and you fit the bill on both counts.” She holds back her sobs. She knows she has merited a great treasure, a special husband, a choshuve yunger-man, but middas hadin seems to have decreed that afterwards, no remnant will remain. All their efforts, their hishtadlus, everything in the

world they could have possibly tried, and still – nothing. Literally nothing. And in the meantime, their funds have been totally exhausted, dried up. Doctors and tests, treatments and more tests – and still, no child.

“A talmid chacham who is both poor and hum-ble… maybe I will call Kupat Ha’ir to tell them that I know someone like that, and maybe they will give the money from the segulah to him, and in doing so, I can also fulfill the segulah...”

How much sorrow there is in this home, how much pain in their hearts.

T he Fateful DecisionMaybe this couple will decide to use the money for the segulah, and maybe they won’t. Only they can make the decision, but Hashem should help that they shouldn’t need to make it – if only they should some-how be granted both those things they are lacking – and the main thing, that their tefil-los should be accepted on High.

For what is this segulah? It’s just a request, made in the best possible way, and that is all that they are asking – that their tefillos be ac-cepted.

But it’s not only they who are suffering. It’s their parents, too, who see their younger children married and starting families of their own – and it breaks their hearts to see this one couple still waiting. It’s his friends in kollel, and her friends at work – it’s all those around them who know

them and share, if but a little, their distress.

An Ancient Seg-ulahWhen can it be said with certainty that Hakadosh Baruch Hu has true nachas ruach from His people? At times like this, when He sees how we donate to tzedakah for the merit of others, that they should be blessed with children… One hundred and four coins for each couple, many times over – along with the tefillos that rend the Heavens, the verses of Tehillim – all these attest to our ahavas Yisrael, our concern for our fellow Yidden, our desire to do whatever we can to help.

Erev Shavuos is an auspicious time to daven for the blessing of children, writes Rav Chaim Palagi. The source for this statement is in the Torah itself. The Alshich Hakadosh explains that it was on Erev Sha-vuos that Reuven found mandrakes and brought them to his mother, Leah Imeinu. Going right back to the days of our Avos Hakedoshim, this day has been established as one that awaits the tefillos and bakashos of those who are davening for children.

This is not a segulah that was ‘invented’ in recent generations. Already several years ago, the Rebbe of Chernobyl shlit”a said that the words of Rav Chaim Palagi don’t need any outside confirmation – but this year, we actually found the source in the To-rah itself. Erev Shavuos is when Leah Imeinu a”h davened for and was blessed with children, and the mandrakes on that day were the segulah that led to the birth of Yissaschar.

A Segulah from the Times of the Avos!

From the days of Reuven ben Yaakov? So long ago? The Torah precedes the world by 974 generations! And since then, this date, Erev Shavuos, has been established as one on which the Shaarei Shamayim open in response to the cries of those waiting for children – in order to bring about their yeshuah!

This date – the one cited by Rav Chaim Palagi in his segulah.

To Gain So Much – From So Little…When we support talmidei chachamim, we are doing so much more than simply giving tzedakah. “Im ain kemach, ain Torah…” Supporting talmidei chachamim and enabling them to continue to learn, without financial distractions, makes us partners in their learning, and we literally acquire a portion of their sechar of limmud haTorah.

Such merits, such zechuyos, that go straight up to Shamayim and intercede on our behalf, this hun-dred and four coins that open the gates of mercy. Everything that is stated in regard to the mitzvah of tzedakah applies to this segulah, as well as every-thing that applies to supporting Torah and Torah scholars. A segulah whose value is hard to estimate, hard to truly appreciate.

After learning of this tremendous segulah, we at Kupat Ha’ir realized that it was an opportunity not to be missed – not for us, but for our supporters. And yet – who were we to decide who is a genuine talmid chacham, one who is not only poor but also truly humble? Whose eyes are pure enough to dis-cern such things?

And so, we turned to the Gedolei Hador, and asked them to help us. When it comes to poverty, we can say that we are experts – after all, we have lists and lists of those who qualify, and we can also make our own inquiries. But to know who is truly humble in Hashem’s Eyes – surely this is a matter hidden in the heart of a person?

“Please choose the names from the list!” we at Ku-pat Ha’ir begged of the Gedolei Hador. “You must choose! Your eyes see further than the written word on the page, and what’s more, Hakadosh Baruch Hu will not allow a mistake to happen through your actions. We cannot decide who is deserving – you must decide, and then, the segulah will be fulfilled in the only way possible.”
