Pat’s patter...Welcome to our first yearbook, a new annual publication that we’ve launched to keep you informed about what’s happening at World Challenge. Whether you’re a parent, Challenger, teacher, Leader or staff member, I hope you find our yearbook informative, helpful and inspiring.

This edition features truly inspiring photographs from recent expeditions and is packed with information to help you plan for forthcoming expeditions. It also highlights the work we’re doing to give-back to the people and places we encounter on our travels, and several new initiatives designed to enhance the programme.

Safety is a priority in all our activities. It’s crucial that young people can enjoy their expeditions to remote parts of the world safely. We set ourselves very high standards when it comes to managing risk, and invest considerable time and money (see pages 16-17).

Sustainable development is also a major focus for us. From minimising our impact on the environment, to investing in projects that really benefit the communities we work with, the whole company is dedicated to making meaningful and lasting improvements (see page 21).

I’m a passionate believer in the power of the World Challenge Programme™. My own journey with the company started in 1995 when I ran my first expedition through my school. As a teacher, I’d organised many trips, but this was something else! So I followed my heart and took a year’s sabbatical, working for World Challenge as a Regional Programme Manager. I never returned to school. Instead, I worked steadily up the ranks and now work closely with Nigel Miller, MD, World Challenge Group.

I’ve not looked back, and I’m now passionate that every member of our World Challenge community has an expedition or employment experience that’s equally life-changing!

I’m always open to comments and feedback and will be more than happy to hear from you - just ring or email directly.

Photography competitionCapturing the fun and magic of a World Challenge expedition in just one photo is a tough call! But Krystina Warrington (Newcastle-under-Lyme School) and Rebecca Malynn (Tormead School) did just that! They’ll both receive £300 as winners of the 2010 photography competition. The standard of entry was extremely high, so well-done to everyone who took part!

Putting the fun into fundraising...Last year 1,500 students raised £280,000 towards their expedition at the Challenger Events. Taking part is a lot more fun than going it alone, so don’t miss the opportunity to get involved. We’ve seven Challenger Abseils and three Challenger Runs scheduled throughout spring 2011.

See page 7 for details or log-in to My World Challenge.

Psst... Expeditions at ski-trip prices Not all of us have the resources to commit to the full World Challenge Programme, so we’ve condensed the essence of it into World Challenge Compact - a one or two-week expedition with a wide range of itineraries. Destinations include North Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

For more information on Compact, go to www.school-adventures.co.uk or call to request a brochure.

We are the first point of contact for School Leaders, looking after a portfolio of schools.

I went on expedition as a Challenger to Southern Peru so after seeing some amazing places in the world I knew I wanted to work in this industry.

”Do School Leaders need to be first aid trained?” Answer: Yes, all travelling School Leavers require a 16-hour minimum Remote Emergency Care certificate. World Challenge offer several free regional courses.

You’ll probably never do anything like this again, so embrace it!

Allow the Challengers to make their own decisions and let them learn from mistakes.

Encourage your son or daughter to start fundraising, researching, and working on fitness as soon as possible.

We deal with all incoming enquiries from Challengers and parents and can advise on any aspect of the programme and expedition.

I accompanied a team as an Expedition Assistant to India (Himalayas and Rajasthan). The team was fantastic! They really got involved with the culture.

As a Leader, you have to step back. If the Challengers are going to make a mistake that won’t compromise their safety, let them. It’s a great way to learn.

“Are our expeditions safe?” Answer: It’s our top priority and we lead the field in expedition safety. However, expeditions do carry an element of risk and it’s our job to minimise and manage that. (Read more at www.world-challenge.co.uk/safety)

Relax and stick with it, even when the going gets tough or things go wrong. When you return, these will become your favourite memories and best stories.

Encourage the team to have regular meetings so they keep each other motivated.

All the hardwork during the programme results in an adventure of a lifetime, so keep them motivated! The experience will help them standout from the crowd. It’s a competitive world out there.

From the moment a Challenger signs up, we’ll support them with their fundraising ideas and targets. We also advise on payment issues, problems and methods.

Anything to do with promoting education to young people in places other than in the classroom resonates with me.

I went to Morocco this summer as an Expedition Assistant. I laughed the whole time and it was great to see the team develop during their experience.

There’s nothing quite like sleeping under the stars! More importantly I learnt to keep good humour. If you can smile and laugh, you can survive any situation.

“Is it possible to register with an online website such as Just Giving?” Answer: Unfortunately no, because we don’t have charitable status. However we can arrange for you to receive, online donations via a site called ‘Everyday Hero’.

Make a comprehensive plan for your fundraising and start as soon as you sign up.

Think of ways to keep Challengers motivated throughout Build-up and keep communication channels open.

Work alongside your son or daughter to make a fundraising chart. Put it on the fridge as a constant reminder for what they need to achieve by set dates.

UK-based training expeditions for teams preparing for three-four week expeditions are now even more accessible for everyone involved!

The Training Expedition is a two-day course that allows teams to work together in the field and learn some of the essential skills that will help them in achieving a fun, safe and rewarding overseas expedition. We’ve now made them more accessible by adding new venues across the country which also helps to reduce travelling time and increase training time.

Formerly known as the Expedition Preparation Conference, the Expedition Training Day prepares all travelling School Leaders and Expedition Leaders with lectures and workshops on vital medical, safety and in-country information.

It’s always been a popular event, but we’ve taken your feedback onboard and given the training a makeover.

In 2011 all core sessions will be 100% destination specific and all training days will be scheduled for weekends in term time, so you don’t have to forego any spring breaks!

Core events will run from 10am to 4pm, with optional sessions available outside of these times. Sessions will be interactive with opportunities to ask questions.

After three years, work on the interior and exterior of our Kindergarten project is now complete. Well done to everyone who took part!

We continue to improve the maternity facilities in Luwawa, which are in desperate need of help. Multiple teams will contribute to the ongoing work here for a period of three years.

The government currently has a food programme offering school children just one bowl of porridge per day. We’re helping to build vegetable gardens so that schools can supplement their children’s diet and sell crops to bring in additional funding.

Teams are reducing the damage caused to the environment by tourism in organised beach clean-ups, protecting marine life such as the cape fur seal and the fragile vegetation in the area.

As part of a community initiative to boost ecotourism, teams are helping to construct interpretive trails in the forest, raising awareness of the local vegetation and wildlife.

We’re working closely with local NGOs to build schools in rural communities. Two secondary schools have been built, with another due for completion in December.

We’ve just committed three years of funding to help build housing for elderly carers who typically look after 11 orphaned children. They desperately need more room with adequate facilities. We’ll build a minimum of two additional huts per year.

This year we committed three years of funding to ensure the completion of a school for workers’ children in Himachal Pradesh, Northern India where these children currently have no access to education.

‘In-country Guides, with their unparalleled-knowledge of the local area and language, are an integral part of a successful trek to support Expedition Leaders and the team’ says . ‘But up until now, it has been down to our Leaders to train local guides as they go on our specific safety policies, standards and unique ethos.’

Experienced World Challenge Instructors fly out to deliver practical and theoretical training for a pool of local guides to ensure that they work to an approved standard set by the company.

Training covers the roles and responsibilities of the Expedition Leader; information on students’ capabilities; child protection; risk management; safety procedures (such as river-crossings and injured-person evacuation); first aid; group management; health and hygiene; and last but definitely not least, the World Challenge ethos.

, the Instructor who delivered the pilot training adds: ‘Many of our guides also provide 5-star tourist services for adult groups whose only responsibility is to take in the amazing views! We’ll be training these guides in youth development, reminding them that teams are to be encouraged to think for themselves, work together and lead for themselves.’

concludes ‘The free training courses also represents a useful way to give something back to the countries we visit. Guides can use our training certificates to promote their new standards and improve their employment opportunities.’

This training programme will begin to be rolled out over the next few months, starting with our busiest destinations and those with particularly remote treks.

‘We send our sincere gratitude and appreciation to World Challenge. The support given to the guides by Mr Roy Jarvis was of high quality and the guides are enlightened by the World Challenge ethos. Everyone enjoyed the survival techniques - the rope work, river-crossings and first-aid. His enthusiasm really encouraged our guides’.

I also know that a great deal of time and effort was spent trying to secure a passage home for the team and we were extremely grateful that you were able to secure them on one of the first flights out of Morocco.

With environment as one of the three components of the World Challenge ethos, it follows that the company is 100% committed to sustainable growth. So just what are we doing to ensure the well-being of the world in years to come?

Ensuring sustainable growth in a company that relies on sending thousands of people across the world by plane is a tough job, albeit one worth doing. And who better to take on the task than World Challenge’s dedicated Sustainability Team. They’ll be rallying everyone round to meet an ambitious strategy for the year ahead, building on what we’re already doing to become a truly sustainable business.

And Alex Auden, who leads the team, is thrilled with how staff are already engaging with the project, saying ‘we don’t need to look past the number of ideas flooding in to our new

for evidence of our staff’s commitment!’

But ideas won’t change the world. It’s what we do with them that matters! So here’s what we’re doing next year that will impact positively on the well-being of the people we meet and the places we inhabit, as we go about our business.

This is designed to protect pay and conditions for local guides etc. and the treatment of pack animals used on treks. We already adhere to the International Porter Protection Guidelines.

The team has been busy recording the company’s carbon footprint - from paper usage, energy consumed and travel habits in 2009 - in order to set reduction targets for the whole business over a one to three year period.

We hope to minimise any negative impact of our expeditions by ensuring teams get involved in sustainable activities, such as reforestation and beach clean-ups, as well as providing training for the guides who work in the parks (see our In-country Guide Training initiative article on pages 12 and 13).

We’re re-configuring printers to energy and paper saving settings, and installing waterflow reducers on all taps... to name but a few!

Of course we’re already doing a lot to promote sustainability in our business, from off-setting staff flights (and giving the Challengers the opportunity to do so), researching and running really worthwhile, sustainable expedition projects, educating Challengers on responsible travel, incentivising staff to travel to work by bike or train, a Charity Day Scheme and incentivising in-house fundraising.

The reason the expedition was such a terrific success was in short down to the service that your company provided, one that was nothing short of exceptional.

...Debbie Dack (my School Support Coordinator) is quite possibly the best link person I have ever dealt with from any company whilst I have been in teaching. There was seemingly nothing that I could ask Debbie that wouldn’t be met with either a cheery phone call, or prompt email response.
