With several exciti ng academic pro-grams to choose from, a breathtaking

campus and nati onally recognized athleti cs faciliti es, UCF off ers a college experience unlike any other.

And the women’s soccer program has al-ways helped to lead the way. Here’s the simple rundown of what the program has accomplished since 1981.

-In 29 seasons, the Knights have had a win-ning record 26 ti mes.

-Leads all Florida schools with 14 trips to the NCAA Tournament.

-Has posted eight seasons of 15 wins or more in 11 years under head coach Aman-da Cromwell.

-Speaking of Cromwell, she not only played with the U.S. Nati onal Team from 1991-98, she was an assistant coach for the Na-ti onal Team in January 2009 and the U-20 Women’s Team that won the World Cup in the fall of 2008.

-Always forms one of the toughest, most challenging schedules in the nati on, in-cluding a 2010 slate highlighted by Arizona State, Florida, Florida State, Harvard and San Diego State as well as another journey through 11 very talented teams that help make up Conference USA.

A UCF women’s soccer team led by Amanda Cromwell always has an infl ux of newcomers that contribute right away every season. And when these student-athletes begin to gel with the skilled veterans, the Knights take off .

Cromwell realizes this will be an even more important ingre-dient in 2010 if the Black and Gold desires to repeat as Con-ference USA champions. The Knights lost several pieces from a 2009 squad that was ranked as high as No. 8 in the nati on, including All-American midfi elder Becca Thomas, leading scorer Courtney Whidden and Nikki Moore who arguably will go down as one of the best backs in UCF history.

In all, UCF is without fi ve starters from a year ago, but with a total of 16 freshmen on this season’s roster, the newcomers have a perfect chance to immediately crack the lineup in pre-season camp. Yet the talent level of the 20 returning Knights will sti ll make the 2010 club a powerful threat in C-USA once again.

Heading into her 12th year as the leader of the Knights, Crom-well shares her thoughts as the 2010 season approaches.

Q: You lost a lot of quality seniors so what are the main con-cerns for you going into preseason camp?A: The biggest thing will probably be fi nding goal scoring and who will step up to fi ll Courtney’s shoes. But also the play-making that Becca provided in the midfi eld will be another main area we need to focus on. All of our seniors had huge roles for us last year including Yvonne George up front and how she terrorized defenses, Nikki Moore in the back and

Emily Maynard in the midfi eld. We also had a great keeper in Lynzee Lee who will be missed this year, but fortunately we do have Aline Reis back for her junior season. So where our goals come from and who will spearhead the att ack from the midfi eld are the two big questi ons we need to answer.

Q: Who do you think can replace Courtney Whidden and Yvonne George?A: Based on the spring, Kim Newsome and Tishia Jewell should be vying for the role as our leading goal scorer. One of them should get a bunch of assists and the other will get more opportuniti es to fi nish. They are not natural goal scor-ers like Whidden who was really gift ed in that area, so they have to really be focused on ti ming runs and being in the right place on fi rst touches. They need to be pure fi nishers instead of just striking the ball. Tishia didn’t score a goal last year so we want her to get on a roll early this year to build her confi dence. But they both can be very dynamic up top.

Q: And what about fi lling in for Becca Thomas?A: There are a lot of midfi elders that will be given shots, but based on this past spring we have to look at Stacie Hubbard and Kati e Jackson as two players who have done well for us. We put Hubbard into more of an att acking role in the spring, as she was primarily a defensive mid in the past. She’s very good on the dribble and can be very explosive. We also could add another defensive mid in there and have both of them att acking. Kati e has bett er playmaking ability, I think she sees the game a bit bett er than our other midfi elders and she can play the special balls that Becca did for us last year.

Q: You have Christi na Petrucco, Lauren Halbert and Bianca Joswiak returning. So what do you expect from the defense in 2010?A: We did have freshman Ashley Nicol in the spring, and she stepped into that right back spot and played great. She has great crosses and hits a good ball. The one thing she has that Nikki was lacking is her heading ability. She is very good in the air, and that will add to the strength of our defense. Ash-ley will be able to get up and down the line, but right now doesn’t have the one-on-one ability that Nikki possessed, so we’ll have to get on her to join the att ack.

Q: Aline Reis was an All-American keeper as a freshman, and her stats were even bett er as a sophomore. How do you feel knowing that she conti nues to anchor the defense?A: Aline is so quick and agile, and her positi oning is so good that her 5-foot-3 frame isn’t a liability. We’ve had tall keepers in the past that get beat on high balls, but Aline is able to reach them. She just needs to stay healthy. We would like to keep her in a plasti c bubble if possible. Combining Aline and our returning defenders, we have high expectati ons of our defense in terms of shutouts and goals against.

Q: What are your thoughts on your schedule, which is as always very tough?A: We have the right mix of teams in our schedule. A lot of them have been to the NCAA Tournament and others who are on the cusp of getti ng in. We don’t have any easy games this year as always. We have to show up everyday for training and on gamedays because it’s just as important to get those early non-conference victories for our RPI and a possible at-large bid.

Amanda CromwellHead coach Amanda Cromwell conti nues to guide the Knights into the nati onal spotlight as she begins her 12th season at UCF. From top-10 rankings, NCAA

Tournaments, conference championships and All-Americans, the UCF women’s soccer program only looks for even bigger things in 2010.

Team Success Since taking over the helm of UCF women’s soccer in 1999, Cromwell has guided her team to a 158-68-15 record, eight NCAA Tournament appearances, four Atlanti c Sun Tourna-ment championships and three C-USA regular-season ti tles.

The Knights have capped off the last nine seasons ranked among the top squads in their region, including a No. 1 rank-ing in the Central Region by the NSCAA in 2009. During that ‘09 campaign, UCF was in the nati onal rankings every week beginning in mid-September, climbing to No. 8 in the country Oct. 27 which was UCF’s highest mark in the Cromwell era.

Individual Honors In additi on to her accomplishments as head coach, Cromwell also has helped her players excel individually both on and off the fi eld. During her tenure, Knights have earned 79 all-con-ference honors and 28 Nati onal Soccer Coaches Associati on of America (NSCAA) All-Region selecti ons.

The awards piled on following the Knights’ dominant 2009 campaign. Becca Thomas became UCF’s fi rst midfi elder since 1995 to be honored as an All-American, while she joined Nikki Moore, Courtney Whidden and Aline Reis as all-region selecti ons.

When C-USA released its postseason accolades, UCF placed four on the fi rst team: Thomas, Moore, Whidden and Reis. That was highlighted by Thomas being voted as the C-USA Midfi elder of the Year.

As her players were being dressed with trophies, Cromwell received a litt le hardware as well. The leader of the Knights was named the 2009 C-USA Coach of the Year as well as the All-Central Region Coach of the Year.

In 2008, Cromwell helped Reis develop into UCF’s fi rst overall All-American since 1995, as Reis was one of just three fresh-men on either the fi rst or second team.

Meanwhile, Courtney Baines (2004 and 2005) and Jennifer Manis (2007) both received conference defensive player of the year honors, Danielle dos Santos was the 2007 C-USA Newcomer of the Year, Jennifer Montgomery was named 2002 Atlanti c Sun Freshman of the Year and Michelle Ander-son earned 2001 A-Sun Player of the Year recogniti on.

Her student-athletes are also known for their academic success, as they have collected 184 conference academic awards. In 2005, Baines received ESPN the Magazine Aca-demic All-America honors and the C-USA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Award. Thomas later would become the seventh diff erent player in UCF history to earn NSCAA/adi-das Women’s Collegiate Scholar All-America honors, joining former Cromwell protégés Baines, Jennifer Manis, Jackie Van-Looven, dos Santos and Allison Blagriff .

Year-By-Year Highlights With a talented senior class, the 2009 Knights had a lot to look forward to as they would play the second toughest non-conference schedule in the country. And with victories over No. 4 Florida State and No. 10 Duke, UCF was in line for a big year. The C-USA Coach of the Year, Cromwell took her squad to a No. 8 nati onal ranking, a 17-5-1 record and a C-USA regu-lar season ti tle by going 10-1-0 in league play.

The Knights were a No. 3 seed for the NCAA Tournament but were forced to travel to Wisconsin for the dance. Although the Black and Gold suff ered a loss in chilly conditi ons in the second round, 2009 was certainly a year to remember. Not only did UCF make its third-straight trip to the postseason, it set a single-season att endance record with 4,601 fans in eight matches, including a school mark of 1,142 fans who saw UCF upset FSU in overti me.

Head Coach - 12th Season with the KnightsCromwell and the Knights also put together a grueling schedule for 2008, and the results did not disappoint. UCF completed the year with a 14-6-3 record, and went 5-2-1 in a non-conference slate that included four ranked teams. That, along with a 7-2-2 mark in C-USA, helped the Black and Gold secure an at-large berth into the NCAA Tourna-ment, where it topped Miami to reach at least the second round for the eighth ti me in school history.

UCF fi nished 2008 by ranking fi rst in All-C-USA Team se-lecti ons, with Becca Thomas and Nikki Moore leading the way as members of the fi rst team.

The 2007 season gave the Knights yet another champi-onship ring, as the Knights claimed a share of the C-USA regular-season ti tle and fi nished with a 15-4-4 record. UCF went on to earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tourna-ment, where it defeated Auburn and played No. 6 Florida to a 0-0 draw in the second round. The Black and Gold completed 2007 ranked No. 20 in the fi nal RPI poll and No. 30 in the Soccer Buzz nati onal rankings.

During its sophomore campaign in C-USA in 2006, UCF post-ed a record of 11-6-2, including a 1-0 shutout of No. 9 Rice and a 2-1 win over No. 15 SMU. Five Knights were named to the all-conference teams as forward Roberta Pelarigo and midfi elder Becca Thomas grabbed fi rst-team honors and goalkeeper Jennifer Manis received a spot on the C-USA All-Academic Team. Both Pelarigo and Manis also were tapped for NSCAA All-Southeast Region accolades.

The Knights enjoyed tremendous success in their inaugural season in C-USA in 2005. They posted a 12-10 overall mark and an 8-1 record in conference play to earn a share of the regular season championship. Aft er defeati ng Houston 3-2 in the fi rst round of the C-USA Championship, UCF fell to even-tual runner-up and NCAA Tournament parti cipant UTEP.

During the team’s fi nal season in the Atlanti c Sun, the Knights went 17-4-2 overall and were a perfect 9-0 against teams from the state of Florida, including wins over No. 14 Florida State and No. 10 Florida. They were 8-2 in league play as they picked up the A-Sun’s fi rst ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tour-nament, where they defeated Florida, 3-2, in the fi rst round.

Cromwell led UCF to a 16-5-1 record in 2003 as the team won the A-Sun Tournament crown for the third consecuti ve sea-son. The Black and Gold advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where Florida topped the Knights, 3-2, in double overti me in the fi rst round.

The success of 2003 came on the heels of a record-breaking 2002 season. That year, the Knights posted an 18-5-0 mark, eclipsing the program record for most wins previously set by Cromwell’s 1999 squad. Aft er defending both the A-Sun regu-lar season and tournament ti tles, UCF returned to the NCAA College Cup for the second consecuti ve year - and took a 2-0 loss at the hands of Auburn in its opening match.

In 2001, the Knights fi nished with a 14-6 record and took top honors in the A-Sun before making a trip to the NCAA Tourna-ment for the second ti me under Cromwell’s leadership.

UCF compiled an 8-11-1 overall mark and landed second in the conference in 2000 thanks to a 7-2 record against A-Sun opponents. And aft er a 7-5 start in 1999, UCF rebounded with a 10-game unbeaten streak that included a 1-0 win over Furman in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament before perennial power North Carolina halted the Knights’ bid for a nati onal crown. They fi nished the year with a 16-6-1 overall record and an 8-0-1 conference mark.

Cromwell Prior to UCF A nati ve of Annandale, Va., Cromwell led the Annandale High School team to a state championship and earned NSCAA All-America honors. The school reti red her jersey aft er she graduated.

Cromwell conti nued her playing career at the University of Virginia, where she captained the squad to the 1991 NCAA Final Four. She added even more individual honors to her resume, including two All-America selecti ons and four All-At-lanti c Coast conference awards. She earned Soccer America’sMVP award twice, captured three all-south region selecti ons and was a fi nalist for the Hermann Trophy.

In her fi rst year at UVA, Cromwell was selected to Soccer America’s All-Freshman Team and took the team’s rookie of the year award.

Following her standout career in Charlott esville, Cromwell conti nued to make a name for herself. She was a member of the U.S. team that took third at the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Sweden and an alternate on the 1996 gold medal winning Olympic team in Athens, Ga., aft er coming back from a serious knee injury. She earned 55 caps while representi ng the Red, White and Blue at least once every year from 1991-98.

Cromwell has also lent her playing talents to the Women’s United Soccer Associati on (WUSA). She began her career with the Washington Freedom in 2001, starti ng 18 matches and scoring two goals. The following season, she played in 12 games as a member of the Atlanta Beat, then moved on to the San Jose CyberRays in 2003.

Representi ng UCF Around the Globe During the summer, Cromwell acts as the director of the Cen-tral Florida Soccer Academy, which is held on the campus of UCF. She conti nues to serve as an ambassador for the game as a member of the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors.

Before the 2007 season, Cromwell worked on the coach-ing staff for the U-14 Girls’ Nati onal Development ID Camp, which took place in California. And during 2008, she served as an assistant coach for the United States U-20 Women’s Na-ti onal Team, which claimed its second FIFA World Cup trophy since 2002.

When 2009 began, the leader of the Knights was back in the U.S. program, joining the Women’s Nati onal Team in January as an assistant coach as it prepared for the Algarve Cup in Portugal.

Cromwell would later be appointed to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Rules Committ ee in 2010, and is serving a four-year term. In 2002-06, she earned a spot on the Presi-dent’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as part of Presi-dent George W. Bush’s Healthier U.S. Initi ati ve. The council is charged with promoti ng fi tness and athleti c acti viti es to Americans of all ages.

She was also selected for the Athletes in Acti on Women’s Advisory Board, a committ ee whose goal it is to identi fy and equip potenti al leaders in women’s sports.

Cromwell holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Virginia. She resides in Winter Park.

Colby HaleColby Hale has evolved into one of the premier assistant coaches in the country. In his eighth year with UCF and his fourth as the associate head coach in 2010-11,

Hale serves as the program’s recruiti ng coordinator while his on-fi eld responsibiliti es include coaching the Knights’ att ack.

The UCF off ense has scored 313 goals during his seven-year tenure, and was ranked among the top 25 scoring off enses nati onally for two-consecuti ve seasons.
