Craig Rainey has established himself and his program as one of the class Division III baseball powerhouses over the last five seasons. Rainey enters his 17th season in the best position his programs has even seen. The Bulldogs have made the NCAA Regional for four of the last five years and in 2009 set an MIAA record by winning the league with a 25-3 record. The Bulldogs were the clear-cut winner without feeling much of a push from the rest of the conference. The team hosted the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional at Nicolay Field for the first time in school history and finished third. Adrian was bounced out of the regionals by eventual national runner-up College of Wooster but did pick up wins against Rose-Hulman (9-8) and Heidelberg (3-1). AC bounced back after an opening game loss to Marietta to win those two games and finish the regional at 2-2. The team went 33-11 overall and Rainey coached both the MIAA Pitcher of the Year in Ryan Domschot and co-MIAA Position Players of the Year in Todd Meyers and Alex Cowart. Cowart and Domschot were also named All-Americans in 2009.

Rainey and the Bulldogs accomplished a lot of positive things in 2008 and made a name for themselves on both a regional and national stage. The Bulldogs compiled a 36-13 overall record and received an at-large bid into the Mideast

Regional hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, Indiana. Adrian made history by becoming the first MIAA team to advance to the NCAA Nationals in Appleton, Wisconsin by winning the regional. The Bulldogs then compiled two wins in the nationals over Linfield and Kean on their way to finishing fourth in Division III after a third-place game loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater. Rainey was named Mideast Regional Coach of the Year and senior Bobby Rickstad was selected as Mideast Regional Player of the Year and Third Team All-American by the ABCA.

In 16 seasons at the helm, Rainey has become the program’s winningest coach while leading the Bulldogs to back-to-back MIAA championships and appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, the Bulldogs won their second-straight MIAA crown, sharing the title with co-champion Hope College. Ranked fifth in the Mideast region at season’s end, the 2006 squad was 25-15 overall and 21-7 in the conference. The 2005 squad won the MIAA title and made the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2005 Bulldogs set school records for wins (27) and ended the season ranked fourth in the Mideast region.

Rainey has mentored 23 all-region performers, as well as 44 first-team All-MIAA players. He has also produced four conference MVPs and two league most valuable pitchers. Two of his former Bulldogs have gone on to play professionally with Keith Bozyk `94 and Greg Sieszputoski `99 both playing for the Chillicothe Paints of the Frontier League.

With experience coaching at both the Connie Mack and Poly League level, Rainey has been a guest speaker at the Michigan High School Baseball Association coaches’ clinic and the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association coaches clinic. Prior to serving as the Bulldogs head coach, Rainey was an assistant coach under former coach and athletic director Henry Mensing. In 1993, Rainey helped AC to its first MIAA baseball championship. A 1988 graduate of Adrian College, Rainey started for three years at catcher for the Bulldogs and won the MIAA batting crown as a senior, hitting .467 in league games. Rainey later earned a master’s degree in sports administration from the United States Sports Academy. A product of Owosso, Rainey and his wife Jeannie have two children, Gunner and Kia, and reside in Adrian.

Xander Younce will return for his second season as an assistant coach for the Adrian College baseball team.

Younce was the starting catcher for the Bulldogs during the 2008 national title run and even delivered the game-winning RBI in

the regional final on a sacrifice fly which sent Adrian to its first-ever nationals appearance. He will be in charge of catchers, outfielders and recruiting for the program. He will also coach the JV squad.

Younce had a career batting average of .286 and played in 125 games. He recorded 97 hits in 339 at-bats and also tallied 14 doubles, three triples and three home runs at the plate. On defense he recorded 560 putouts, 79 assists and a fielding percentage of .988.

FFGordie Theisen is in his sixth year as the pitching coach for Adrian College. The Adrian pitching staff had one of its best seasons in 2009 as the team advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth time in five years. Theisen’s staff posted an ERA of 4.09 which ranked 29th

in Division III. In addition, they ranked 16th nationally in fewest walks allowed per nine innings.

Theisen has been coaching baseball since 1979. He served as the Head Baseball Coach at Siena Heights University from 1987-2003, finishing with 341 career wins, including several victories over Division I opponents, including Michigan State University, University of Michigan, and University of Toledo. He produced three Saints that were drafted by Major League teams during his coaching tenure and three more players that signed pro contracts.

Theisen also runs his own business, GT Athletic Consulting and Baseball Instruction in Adrian. He has a son Eric, and a daughter, Tess.

Aaron Klotz enters his 11th season as a member of the Adrian College coaching staff. A full-time coach at Adrian from 1999-2006, Klotz has moved into a volunteer coaching spot with the Bulldogs.

A native of Jackson, Klotz graduated from Lumen Christi High

School in 1994 and continued his education at Adrian. Under Klotz’s direction in 2005, the Adrian College Bulldogs set a new school record for fielding percentage and ranked 16th in the nation for total defense. During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, Klotz helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back MIAA championships and appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

Klotz started for four years at second base for Coach Rainey from 1995-98 and was first team All-MIAA his junior year. He was also voted the MIAA’s MVP in 1997. His greatest honor was in `97 when he was named First Team All-Mideast as selected by Rawlings.

Klotz graduated from Adrian in 1998 with a degree in health, physical education and recreation with an emphasis on teaching. During the summer time Klotz is the head coach for the Adrian American Legion Post 275 baseball team.

Klotz is currently employed as a regional sales manager for ProGrass Synthetic Turf Systems. He resides in Adrian with his wife, Allison, and their kids - Logan (6) and Alexis (3).

Luke Harrigan returns to Adrian College as an assistant coach for the baseball team after a year off in 2009. Harrigan served as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs during the 2007 season, and also coached during the 2008 season when Adrian reached the World Series.

Harrigan spent the 2005-06 year at Franklin College (Ind.) where he tutored the infielders and catchers. He coached four all-conference performers at Franklin, including the 2006 HCAC Freshman of the Year. He has also gained experience as the head coach of the Urbana (Ohio) ACME team and Springfield (Ohio) WBLY Summer team.

Harrigan lettered for the Bulldogs from 2002-2005 and was first-team All-MIAA in ‘04 and ‘05, as well as team captain and team MVP in ‘05. He was part of an NBC World Series Championship as a player in 2001, and an NABF Major Division Championship in 2002.

Harrigan has spent the past few summers coaching in Germany for Major League Baseball’s Envoy Program. Former player Todd Meyers joined Harrigan during the 2009 summer and gained valuable experience. While in Germany, Harrigan has worked various clinics and camps. He also traveled throughout the country to work with a variety of teams in the German Professional League.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 2005 from Adrian, and currently works as an admissions counselor at Adrian College.

The Adrian College baseball program will look to con-tinue their successful ways during the 2010 season. AC enters the season ranked 15th in the D3baseball.com poll and 22nd in the Collegiate Baseball Newspa-per preseason poll. The team finished the 2009 season with a 33-11 overall record, including a 25-3 mark in conference play. The Bulldogs won the Michigan In-tercollegiate Athletic Association title which gave them their fourth appearance in the NCAA Division III region-al in the last five years.

"Our goals don't change much from year to year," said head coach Craig Rainey. "We want to repeat as MIAA Champions, and therefore get an automatic bid into the national tournament. This program has been competing at a national level for the past five seasons. With the talent on this team I believe that we can keep our ranking and continue to be one of the top teams in the country."

Having two preseason All-Americans on the ros-ter should give Adrian confidence for the upcoming season. Alex Cowart and Ryan Domschot were rec-ognized by D3baseball.com as first team selections. Cowart is a senior outfielder, and Domschot is a junior left-handed pitcher. Adrian is one of only two schools in the nation to have two preseason All-Americans on the same team.

PitchingRyan Domschot will be the ace for the Bulldogs. As

a sophomore he posted an impressive 10-2 record on the mound, and he also came in to record one save. Domschot struck out 83 batters in just 75 innings. He held a 2.64 ERA, and only allowed 22 earned runs.

AC has a hole to fill as the second man in the rota-tion, Alex Webster, graduated and is now longer with the team. Josh Lancaster could be the man to replace him as he returns after being part of the rotation a year ago. Jason Fryman picked up innings by coming out of the bullpen in 2009. He will be able to join the rotation along with David Partyka. Partyka returns to the team after a redshirt year. He missed the entire season due to an arm injury.

Dan Welch will enter his senior season as the closer for Adrian. Sophomores Craig Steadman, Sean Hart-man and Mike Neal will also be in the bullpen. Stead-man is left-hander that will be relied upon to be the set up man. Hartman and Neal got to throw a lot of innings last year during the junior varsity season.

Four freshmen will also have a chance to earn in-nings by coming out of the bullpen. Andrew Geese, Josh Burd, Zach Robbins, and James Englehart will all make the spring break trip in hopes to positively impact the team.

"We have a lot of depth this year," said Rainey.

"Good pitching and solid defense is the strength of this program. We will return seven or eight pitchers off last year's roster that saw time. One of our goals will be to hold teams down offensively. In order to do that we will have to continue to keep a high fielding percentage, like we have done in the past."

Behind The PlateJoe Dubina will enter his second year as the start-

ing catcher for the Bulldogs. Dubina started in nearly every game behind the plate for Adrian a season ago. The junior hit .313 last year, but he is better known for his play on defense. "He is very solid defensively," said Rainey. "We rely on him to shut down the opponents running game. He works well with whoever we have on the mound, and we believe that will continue into this season." Jamey Sackett and Brent Weil are two new-comers that could also see some playing time.

InfieldThe Adrian infield will return nearly all of their start-

ers from last year. The loss of standout shortstop Todd Meyers is significant, yet the Bulldogs are confident they can fill the void. Freshman Cody Meyer and junior Chad Williams will each get a chance to showcase their abilities for the starting job at the beginning of the sea-son when AC heads south for their spring break trip.

The rest of the infield will look the same as last year.

W Jake Cappelletty will be at first base alongside Steve Vanderheyden at second. Junior Brian Bilius will re-sume his duties at third base. "Those three players did a great job for us last year," said Rainey. "It hurts to lose Todd (Meyers) because he was such a great player, but the guys returning for us all put up big num-bers, and the best part is that they are two-way play-ers. They didn't make any sacrifices defensively which makes them even better."

Bilius started in every game and hit .323 last season. He hit four doubles, two triples and one home run on his way to recording 33 RBI's. Cappelletty was close behind with a batting average of .320. Cap provided power at the plate with 11 doubles and seven home runs to earn 30 RBI's. Defensively Cappelletty did something special as he did not commit a single error in the field. Finally, Vanderheyden sparked the lineup with a .312 average. He hit 13 doubles, two triples and four home runs to end the season third on the team in RBI's with 34.

Jason Greer will join Adrian after transferring from Lake Michigan College. Greer is a backup first base-man that will get an opportunity to get in the lineup as the designated hitter. "He got a lot of at-bats during his time at Lake Michigan College," Rainey said. Greer will have three years of eligibility left. Garrett Green is another infielder that could see some playing time this season.

OutfieldMuch like the infield, Adrian is lucky enough to retain

all three starters in the outfield. Nate Sarkissian will get the nod in centerfield, as Andrew Anderson will serve as the right fielder, and Alex Cowart will highlight this talented group in leftfield.

Sarkissian hit .376 and was second on the team in RBI's with 36. Defensively he posted a .975 fielding percentage, by only committing two errors all season. Anderson was also a double threat for Adrian. He hit .343 and held a .967 fielding percentage. "Andrew gives us a lot defensively," said Rainey. "Offensively we could see him batting at the top of the order."

Cowart returns to left field after a stellar junior sea-son. He was named First Team All-Mideast Region by the ABCA, Second Team All-American by D3baseball.com, and he was also the first Bulldog to be named to the ABCA First Team as an All-American. He hit .447 which was the second highest total in a season for Adrian with 46 runs, 71 hits, 18 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 46 RBI. Cowart also did not com-mit an error in left field and led the team with 15 steals in 18 tries. "All three of these players have All-Confer-ence talent," says Rainey.

Backing up the returning starters will be Kyle Strawn,

Chris Kerekes, and Nate Clark. Strawn swings the bat well and therefore could see time as the designated hitter. "All three of these guys could get some playing time during our spring break trip," Rainey said.

ScheduleAC will open the 2010 season with a trip to Birming-

ham, Alabama to face Wabash in a single game fol-lowed by two games against Birmingham-Southern. They will be tested early in the year as they travel to 29th ranked Franklin for two games in March. Finally before the start of MIAA play the Bulldogs will travel to Tiffin, Ohio to face Heidelberg on March 20th. The Berg will return the favor as they will travel to Nicolay Field the next day to play AC at 1:00 p.m. The contest against Heidelberg should be a good one. The show-down with Heidelberg will be another battle between two of the top teams in the Midwest. The Bulldogs will face Calvin in a four-game series to begin conference play. The regular season finale will be against Kalama-zoo in early May.

The Adrian College baseball team has the privilege of playing in one of the finest Division III facilities in the country. Nicolay Field was dedicated in 2008 and the Bulldogs just completed their second season at the ballpark by hosting the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional. Nicolay Field is named in honor of Bud and Betty Nicolay, whose generous contributions helped build the estimated $1 million project. The stadium groundbreaking ceremony took place in September 2007 and special guest speaker Ernie Harwell, Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster with the Detroit Tigers, delivered the keynote address about what a great thing was being done for future generations of baseball players at Adrian College. The Bulldogs had been playing baseball at Riverside Park in Adrian for nearly 60 years before the construction of Nicolay Field.

Bud Nicolay is the retired president of Kar Nut Products Company, Inc. The company was started in the 1930’s when its founders roasted peanuts for the fans at Tiger Stadium in downtown Detroit. In 1971, Bud began his long service as a member of the Adrian College Board of Trustees, representing the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 1980, Bud was elected as a Trustee-At-Large, and he continues to serve with distinction on the board today. In 1991, Bud was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his steadfast support, and he continues to be actively engaged in the life of the College.

Nicolay Field has state-of-the-art amenities including a field completely covered in field turf by ProGrass, an inning-by-inning scoreboard, an underground drainage system, professional baseball caliber dugouts, bullpens and batting cages. The facility also has grandstand chairback seating on top of the dugouts for a capacity of 300, a heated press box facility for media and broadcasters, lighting for night games, locker rooms, a training room, restrooms and a concession stand. The press box is dedicated in the honor of Frank and Shirley Dick, longtime supporters of Adrian College.

Nicolay Field is located on the College campus near the Multi-Sport Performance Stadium. The stadium can be accessed via Stratford Avenue off of West Maumee Street.
