YCFC January Chess Tournament-Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep What: The third chess tournament of the season is quickly approaching. The Youth Chess Foundation of Chicago (YCFC) runs free tournaments around the city for area students. At these tournaments, chess players are able to practice their game with students from other schools to both hone their chess playing ability and meet new people in addition to competing for awards. Where: Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy 250 East 111 th Street, Chicago, IL 60628 Parents should drop off and pick up students from Gwendolyn Brooks. We will not be meeting at James Ward School before or after the chess tournament. Day: Saturday, January 14, 2017 Time: 8:30am-3:30pm Chess players must check-in between 8:30am-9:30am. If you show up after 9:30am, you may not be able to participate. After check-in, you must stay for the duration of the event to play all of your matches. The awards ceremony will begin at 3:15pm. Parents should be at Gwendolyn Brooks to pick-up chess players no later than 3:30pm. What to Bring: Because this is an all-day event, you should bring lunch and/or snacks or money to purchase food. I’m told that typically there is food available for sale. Who: Everyone who has joined the Ward chess team is eligible to participate. Please confirm with Mr. Farrell no later than Monday, January 9 whether or not you are able to come to this tournament. Parents are welcome to stay the whole day and watch their child participate. Parents are asked to stand in designated areas a little distance away from the tables, however, to prevent players from communicating during each match. Communicating with parents, students, or coaches during a match will lead to disqualification to make sure everyone has a level playing field. What: The third chess tournament of the

season is quickly approaching. The Youth

Chess Foundation of Chicago (YCFC) runs free

tournaments around the city for area students.

At these tournaments, chess players are able

to practice their game with students from

other schools to both hone their chess playing

ability and meet new people in addition to
