From Kathy’s Desk The past few months have been very productive and exciting at YCAC, especially the ‘Happening’ held at the Anthony Road Winery on August 22nd. A great time was had by the approximately fifty people who attended, taking in the beautiful views from the winery, the entertainment by Ed Clute and the Boogie Woogie girls, delicious food by Around the Corner Catering, wonderful Anthony Road wines and exceptional raffle items donated by local artists and members of the YCAC Board. As in everything which is done by YCAC, the volunteers were many who lent their special time and tal-ents to make the ‘Happening’ a success. From Victoria Murphy who created the graphics for the invitation, the Chamber of Commerce who lent their flyer folding ma-chine, Sally Thomas, Jean Welch, Molly Pearce, her granddaughter and docents who helped prepare the 530 invitations for mailing, Ginny Deneka who donated the use of cutlery from the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, Bev Oben who wrapped the cut-lery in brightly colored napkins, Joan Belles who measured and cut tablecloths, Kent Salisbury who created the beautiful sponsor board, Bonnie Barney for table decora-tions in cobalt blue bottles to go along with our primary color theme, Peter Loughnane who sponsored Ed Clute’s appearance and also printed the invitations, Sam and Liz Castner who set up and broke down the tables and Ann Martini who donated the use of the winery and poured wine, to Fran Bliek who engineered the 50/50 raffle, and of course co-chair Nancy Langford who took care of signs, name tags and countless de-tails. Many thanks to all of these people and any others I may have not mentioned.

The vision of YCAC is to enhance and enrich life in

Yates County through educa-tion and the advancement of

the arts.

To this end, we plan, promote, and develop art programs and projects; coordinate, schedule, and publicize events; develop and maintain physical facili-

ties.

Programs of YCAC are sup-ported by an annual grant from the Yates County Legislature, from commissions collected

YCAC programs are supported in part with pub-lic funds from the New York State Council on the Arts - Decentralization Program, which is administered locally by Finger Lakes Arts Grants & Services.

Attic Art Earnings, Appreciation

Willie Bilancio, chairperson, turned your dusty donations into sparkling treas-ures which realized $1083.70 at the Attic Art Sale. This money will be offered in $200 grants to 2008 applicants for Yates County groups (school classes, clubs, youth groups, etc.) involved in some art-related activity. Thanks to all of you for donations and purchases. Special thanks to Catherine McBride, Char DiGennaro, Jean Welch, Terry Bilancio, Ginny Deneka, Carolyn John-son, and Evan Sorber.

Penn Yan Art Guild Annual Show Opens Sept. 7, 5-7 PM

The Penn Yan area is blessed with an abundance of local artists. Many of them are members of the Penn Yan Art Guild, an organization that meets monthly to support and encourage artists in their work. During the month of September and into early October these artists will show their work at the Gallery on East Elm Street. An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 7, from 5 to 7 PM. Everyone is welcome to come and see what your local artists are doing. The mu-tual support of this organization has been the launching pad for many artists YCAC has enjoyed exhibiting.

Cultural Exchange: the Arts Bridge Neighborhoods "Cultural Exchange" is the title of the exhibit that will open at the Gallery of Yates County Arts Center on October 12th. The "Cultural Exchange" exhibit will display work by regional migrant farm workers. Typically this art includes "Mandalas” that are circular art using white pencil and/or colored pencil on black paper to create interesting designs. Other hand made objects by the farm workers will be on exhibit including large and small paintings by one member who has become an acclaimed artist in his own right. There will be descriptions of the items, the home country of the artist, and information about Yates County migrant workers throughout the years including art by Algonquin Indians who were early migratory workers in Yates County. An exchange of cultural information and sharing will be fostered through the farm workers exhibit as well as the artwork by YCAC's own exhibiting artists who will include work depicting a diversity of cultures inspired by their visits to other lands or by other cultures here in our own country and community. We are pleased to have worked on this exhibit with Mary Ann Zelazny and Jennifer Rios Raner of the Yates County Finger Lakes Migrant Health Office, and also with Silvia Kelly from the Geneseo Migrant Health Office that has lent us many art pieces in their collection. The Opening Reception on Friday, October 12 from 5-7 pm will be hosted by the Finger Lakes Migrant Health Office. Wine, punch, and re-freshments will be available at the reception that is opened to the public free of charge. On Wednesday evening, October 24th from 7-8:30 the public is wel-comed to attend a presentation given by Mary Zelazny of the Finger Lakes Migrant Health Office titled "Migrant Workers 101". The exhibit runs from October 12 through November 10. YCAC in-vites everyone to attend this exhibit and the activities throughout the month and avail themselves to the artwork, the music, the videos, the presentation, and activities that will truly make this event a "Cultural Ex-change".

The Yates County Photography Club will meet at 7:30 P.M., September 20 at The Gallery, 119 East Elm Street, Penn Yan, N.Y. The program will be a display and critique of photos taken this summer by club members and anyone else interested in having us look at your efforts. Photographs may be slides prints or snapshots. This will also be a planning session for future meetings. Anyone inter-ested is welcome to attend. We will come up with a date and time for our October meeting at the Sep-tember meeting.

Guests and new members are always welcome. PYAG exists to encourage all artistic endeavors. If you wish to join, please bring 3 examples of your work to a meeting for the group to admire.

Dues are Active Member $15 (one time initiation fee $3) , Associate Member (not displaying art) $10. Send 2006-2007 PYAG dues to Sally Thomas, 3598 Sid White Rd., Keuka Park, NY 14478.

The meeting will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hamilton Street, Penn Yan, at 7:30. The October 17th meeting, same time and place, will feature the slides from the annual Adirondack Watercolor Show at Old Forge Art Center. Artists, please bring a variety of your work – up to 6 pieces— to the Gallery on Tuesday, Sep-tember 4, between 10 and 3, for the PYAG annual exhibit. Be sure to fill out the inventory form for the show, and plan to attend the reception Friday, Sept. 7, 5-7 PM.

The Red Jacket Writers’ Group meets at The Gallery on the third Monday of each month, 7-9 PM, to share and encourage writing. Plan to read from a current writing project, or try an unusual spin on these adjectives and nouns: for September, Unplanned Words; for Oc-tober, Unexplained Voices. Maybe they’ll spark your imagination. Anyone is welcome to join the writers. Each person donates $1 to YCAC for use of the facility.
