Introduction Year 10 is the final year of compulsory attendance at school and at Wynnum State High School it is the transition year of the senior school. Year 10 is an important year for students as they move towards senior studies in Year 11 and Year 12. In Year 10, we seek to extend our educational offerings and focus on the consolidation of knowledge, mastery of skills and development of higher order thinking skills. We aim to prepare emerging young adults for their senior schooling pursuits as well as their post senior school pursuits. Under the ETRF (Education and Training Reforms for the Future) agenda, the Queensland Government has provided a framework to give young people greater flexibility to achieve qualifications beyond Year 10 — this could be in school, in TAFE or through other forms of training. The Queensland Government has introduced laws that:

make it compulsory for young people to stay at school until they finish Year 10 or have turned 16, whichever comes first

require young people to then participate in education and training for: – a further two years; or – until they have gained a Senior Statement; or – until they have gained a Certificate III vocational qualification; or until they have turned 17

provide exemptions for young people who enter fulltime work after they have either completed Year 10 or turned 16.

Year 10 is the beginning of the senior phase of learning and it is a year in which students make important decisions about study for Years 11-12, achieving a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), aiming for a vocational education and training (VET) Certificate III, seeking employment or pursuing further education by gaining an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for tertiary entrance. A considerable number of students may choose a combination of these pathways. The QCE is about achievement in the Senior Phase of Learning. This phase begins when students are registered with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) before they turn 16. All students will complete a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan as part of the Senior Phase of Learning which will build on strengths and interests and identify for students areas where more work is needed for success. A learning account will be opened in Year 10 which will allow students to “bank” their achievements. At the end of Year 12, all students will receive a Senior Statement listing all their achievements. Those students who have fulfilled prescribed requirements will receive a QCE. For more information about the QCE, please refer to the www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-qce The new Queensland Senior Assessment system was introduced in 2019 and students entering Year 10 in 2021 will be the fourth cohort of students to participate in the new Queensland Senior Assessment system. The new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) system Senior schooling in Queensland has changed to help give students the skills for success in work and life in the future. They’ll acquire 21st century skills to support them as lifelong learners, valued employees, innovators and engaged global citizens. Under this QCE system, students can still choose from lots of subjects and courses that suit their work and study goals. There is also a new way to rank students who wish to apply for university after school. The Overall Position (OP) has been replaced by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Some popular Q & As for students and families – I start Year 10 in 2021. What will it mean for me? When you start Year 10 in 2021, you’ll need to know what to expect under the QCE system as you start to think about senior subjects. In Year 10, the school and family will help you plan what to study in Years 11 and 12. You’ll discuss what jobs or careers you are interested in and then choose the subjects and courses that will enable you to achieve a QCE and work towards your goals. What subjects can I choose? In the QCE system, you can study a wide variety of subjects:

QCAA General subjects

QCAA Applied subjects

Vocational education and training (VET) courses

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

University subjects completed while at school

Workplace learning

Certificates and awards such as those issued by the Australian Music Examinations Board or Duke of Edinburgh program.

What will senior assessment look like? Each General and Applied subject will have four assessment tasks in both Years 11 and 12. The four Year 12 tasks will count towards your final grade in each subject. In Year 12, General subject results will be based on your achievement in three internal assessments (developed by your school), and one external assessment that is set and marked by the QCAA. In most General subjects your internal assessment results will count for 75% of your overall subject result. In Maths and Science subjects, your internal assessment results will generally count for 50% of your overall result. Applied subject results will be based on your achievement in four internal assessments. Internal assessments might include in-class tests, assignments, essays or some other form. Your work will be marked by your school, and QCAA will then review samples of student work for every subject in every school to ensure the quality and rigour of assessment and results. External assessment for each subject will be held on the same day in all schools across the state. Your final subject result will be made up of your external assessment result, plus your three internal assessment results. Will I receive a QCE at the end of Year 12? Yes, provided you “accrue the set amount of learning, at the set standard, in a set pattern, while meeting literacy and numeracy requirements.” (QCAA) If you need a bit longer, you can keep working towards it after you leave school.


What do I need for tertiary entrance? In 2023, if you’re eligible, you’ll be ranked for university using the ATAR. A broad range of courses can contribute to the ATAR:

Five general subjects; or

Four General subjects, and one VET qualification at Certificate III or above; or

Four General subjects, and one Applied subject.

To be eligible, you’ll also need to pass an English subject, but your result will only contribute to your ATAR if it’s one of your best five subject results. The Subject Handbook contains information to help students choose their Year 10 studies. Student choices should reflect abilities, recent achievements and interests while keeping in mind possible Years 11 and 12 subjects and career options. Students in Year 10 will study units derived from ten learning areas. These are:

*Please note, a result of B- or above is required for Year 10 students to select General English and some other subjects in the senior school. *Please note, a B- or above in Core Maths or C- or above in Extension Maths is needed for Year 10 students to select General Maths in the senior school. A result of B- or above in Extension Maths is required for students to select Maths Methods in the senior school. Year 10 student achievement will be reported to students and parents on an A-E scale. This will mirror student achievement in Years 11 and 12.

What do students study in Year 10? The Year 10 curriculum is made up of five (5) core study areas. English, Mathematics and Science will be studied for both semesters of Year 10 while students will study Core Physical Education (CPE) and History for one semester each. Students will choose two (2) electives to study which will be studied for both semesters.

How to choose your subjects for Year 10 There are three things to bear in mind when selecting your electives for study in Year 10. You should ask yourself each of the three questions below when trying to make your decision.

1. What pathway do I intend to follow after Year 10? Some students will want to study an ATAR program after Year 10 with the aim of entering university when they leave school. Some students may be more interested in Vocational Education courses or may be thinking of a traineeship or school based apprenticeship. Some students know exactly what they want to do when they leave school and some want to leave their options open.

You should not worry if you do not yet know which pathway you would like to study in Years 11 and 12, or what you would like to do when you leave school. You might like to explore a wide range of possibilities. Try electives from a range of areas and use your experiences to help you see where your interests lie.

2. What are my interests? Usually your pathway choice in Years 11 and 12 and your future career, will be in an area of interest. You will have to spend 210 minutes of class time a week for the semester in each subject you select and there will be between two and three hours of homework each week in that unit. If you are interested in the subject you are more likely to spend the time required to ensure success and it will certainly be more enjoyable for you.

3. Where am I successful? During your time in Year 8 and Year 9 you will have found that some areas of your studies are easier for you than others. Consider where your talents lie because these are the areas where you will be looking for your future pathways. Some of your choices should allow you to extend your strength areas.

The Australian Curriculum The development of the Australian Curriculum is guided by the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians, adopted by the council of state and territory education ministers in December 2008. The Melbourne Declaration emphasises the importance of knowledge, understanding and skills of learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities as the basis for a curriculum designed to support 21st century learning. The Australian Curriculum sets out the core knowledge, understanding, skills and general capabilities important for all Australian students. It describes the learning entitlement of students as a foundation for their future learning, growth and active participation in the Australian community. It makes clear what all young Australians should learn as they progress through schooling. It is the foundation for high quality teaching to meet the needs of all Australian students. The Australian Curriculum includes a focus on seven general capabilities (literacy, numeracy, information and communication technology capability, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding) and three cross-curriculum priorities (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia and Sustainability). Continua of learning have been developed for each, to describe the relevant knowledge, understanding and skills at particular points of schooling.

Unit 1: World War Two This involves a study of World War II (1939-1945). SUBJECT MATTER

In Unit 1, students will be introduced to contemporary dance technique and will explore how dance can be used to make a statement. They will engage in a project task in which they will choreograph and perform a contemporary dance with use of video in response to a chosen youth issue. Students will also evaluate their choreographic progress through a reflective journal. In Unit 2, students will explore Contact Dance. They will learn the giving and taking of weight through Contact Dance and will practice and refine technical skills necessary to present this style of dance.

SUBJECT MATTER

In Units 3 and 4, students will explore the functions of dance and understand their impact on different cultures throughout history. Students will explore the impact of social and popular dance in society throughout history. Students will choreograph movement sequences and manipulate dance elements to create an era specific dance in a small group. Students will practice and refine their technical and expressive skills to present teacher devised dance works to communicate a choreographic intent. Students will respond to dance works, analysing and evaluating how the elements of dance have been used to communicate the choreographer’s intent.

In this unit, students are introduced to the concept of multimedia. As a foundation unit, students work independently and in groups to design, produce and critique commonly used techniques regularly used by media organisations to influence and position audiences. From pre-production through to filming and post-production, students will also explore the collaborative environment of filmmaking.

In this unit, students will explore the concept of Media as Expression through contemporary and personal contexts to produce a folio of experimental works. Recreation Units Year 10 Recreation is designed as an introduction to lead students into Senior Sport and Recreation. The course is structured to reflect the topics, workload and assessment requirements of Years 11 and 12. Students selecting this subject will be required to attain a Blue Card. They must be prepared to referee primary school sport and run coaching sessions for peers and younger year levels. Assessment in this subject is 50% theoretical and 50% practical. Students will engage in physical activity learning contexts in order to consolidate learning of theoretical concepts. A large emphasis is placed on the practical component of the subject in order to allow students to fully engage in, and appreciate the importance of, recreational physical activity.
