Personified as the goddess Ganga in ancient texts and art. Ritual bathing in the Ganges was and is an important part of Hindu pilgrimage and the ashes of the cremated are often spread across her waters.
2. Hinduism
The Ganges river:
The Ganges is considered a tirtha which means a crossing point between heaven and earth. At a tirtha, prayers and offerings are thought most likely to reach the gods and, in the other direction, blessings can descend most readily from heaven.

3. Islam
Dome of the Rock:
Believed to be the site where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven on a winged horse.
3. Islam
Al-Aqsa Mosque: This is the third holiest site in Islam.Prophet Muhammad was transported from the Sacred Mosque in Mecca to Al-Aqsa during the Night Journey, and then on to heaven. It is also believed that the Prophet Muhammad led prayers towards this site until Allah directed him to turn towards the Kaaba. It was the second place of worship build in Islam, 40 years after the Kaaba, and is mentioned in the Qur’an as being ‘holy’ and ‘blessed’ in numerous extracts.
3. Islam
Mecca (not in Israel, but still important):
A city where the Kaaba is located. Muslims all pray toward this structure 5 times a day to symbolize a unified faith in one God.
4. Judaism
The Western Wall:
The remnant of the Second Temple compound (which was destroyed by the Romans) and one of the holiest sites in Judaism.

Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary:
Jews call the 35 acre compound Temple Mount because it is the site of their Second Temple (the Western Wall being the last remaining piece).
Muslims call it the Noble Sanctuary and see it as the third most holy site in Islam.
The site is controlled by Muslims but some Jews and Israelis want the right to pray there.
5. Christianity
Church of the Holy Sepulchre:
Christians believe the church marks the site where Jesus Christ was crucified and buried
