FOR YOUR SUCCESSWORKING TOGETHER

2018-2020

We are delighted that you are considering continuing your education post sixteen after 11 years of compulsory schooling. It is really important that you choose the right subjects to study that will lead you to your future university course or career. This booklet contains a lot of information about each course but we advise you to also talk to the teachers directly.

As your school, we know you well and so we can offer you the best possible advice taking into account your own personal strengths. The transition from GCSEs or Level 2 BTECs to the style of teaching and learning and level of work required for A Levels, Level 3 BTECs or for vocational courses is not an easy one but, with the advice and guidance of staff whom you already know and with whom you have already established good relationships, this can be achieved as seamlessly as possible.

Courses are offered on two sites; Lliswerry High School and St Julian’s School. Between us we have a comprehensive offer for you to choose from.

Pupils will remain on roll in the school where they studied their GCSEs and BTECs and only travel to the other site to access courses where they are not available in their home school. This can happen for both years 12 and 13 or just for one of those years.

Not only do we aim for further academic success in the Sixth Form, but we also believe that your time in the Sixth Form will provide a familiar, secure environment in which to develop and mature before making the final step into work or Higher Education.

The Sixth Form has its own pastoral team who offer support, advice and guidance on an individual basis. Our facilities for Sixth Form pupils offer both a learning area and a social area. Both of these are important as it is also time to develop skills, interests and hobbies within the school environment.

It is an exciting time in your life and also a very important time. We advise you to talk to subject staff and find out about the different options available to you both at Lliswerry High School and at St Julian’s School.

I am delighted to welcome you to Post 16 at St Julian’s School. At St Julian’s, we aim to provide a caring and supportive environment to enable our students to develop and mature into independent global citizens.

Our learning pathways are designed to allow you to experience outstanding teaching in a broad range of subjects, providing you with the qualifications needed to fulfill your ambitions in employment, further or higher education.

If you believe in yourself anything is possible @stjuilanspost16.

Vision StatementInspiring and motivating our students to become the best that the can through outstanding teaching and lifelong learning @stjulianspost16

How hard is the work at Post 16?Each subject that you take will go into far greater depth than at GCSE. This level of work require you to work hard as soon as you join Post 16 and all the way through the year. Many students find the initial level of the work extremely challenging. For you to achieve well in each subject area you need to organise your time effectively. You will be studying less subjects than in Year 11 but you will need to develop effective independent study along with the ability to analyse and evaluate work effectively.

Focus and time managementMost students will choose to study 3 x AS Levels/BTEC subjects in Year 12 alongside the Welsh Baccalaureate. Outside of these subject areas, students are required to plan and use their time effectively to ensure they are reaching their full potential in each area. Post 16 students have access to the Common Room, Quiet Study Room, LRC, Chromebooks and PCs in the Post 16 area. There are lots of opportunities to become involved in both Post 16 and whole school events and initiatives, however we always encourage students to focus on their subjects as time will go very quickly in Post 16.

Tracking student progressWhen choosing a 2 year qualification, it takes a lot of effort and perseverance to succeed. As a school we will monitor your progress carefully and provide regular feedback on your achievement, attendance, ability to meet deadlines and attitude to learning.

Students need to study a minimum of two A2 subjects alongside the WBQ at Advanced level in Year 13. If students achieve a U grade in a subject their progress will be reviewed on an individual basis and decisions made about whether they progress into Yr 13. Any exceptional circumstances will be taken into consideration.

Regular academic mentoring takes place between the students and their form tutor. The tutor will monitor their progress and work with the student to achieve their potential. If there are any indicators which suggest that a student is not making the progress necessary, then a learning contract will be put into place to support the student.

Attendance Academic research identifies there is a clear correlation between attendance and attainment. There is an expectation that all students in Post 16 have an attendance greater than 95% and any students who does not achieve this will have an attendance review meeting and then will be monitored in line with the school policy.

There is always the temptation to start a part time job while studying at Post 16, along with taking driving lessons and other commitments outside of school. It is imperative that any activities taken outside of school do not affect the academic achievement, attendance or punctuality within school.

ST JULIAN’S SCHOOL - POST 16

Students who have gained at least 5 x A*-C grades or equivalent, by the end of Year 11, will be expected to take 3 - 4 Level 3 subjects. At the end of Year 12, the student, if successful in passing the course, will then be able to continue with their studies into Year 13. In addition, all pupils will study the Level 3 Welsh Baccalaureate qualification.

WHAT SHALL I STUDY?

All A level subjects start with a one year AS course, followed by a second year A2 course.

During the AS students study two or three modules of work leading to an AS level exams/qualification. The pass grades available for AS are A - E.

The A2 course is an additional one year studying another two or three modules of work leading to the full A level exams/qualification. The pass grades available for A level are A*-E.

A LEVELS (Level 3)

Level 3 BTEC courses are similar to A Levels, however they are mainly assessed based around a vocation and are assessed via ongoing coursework. The grades/outcomes for BTEC differ slightly to A Levels in the following way:

TWO YEAR COURSEMust be studied alongside a minimum of two other qualifications. The Welsh Baccalaureate is based on a Skills Challenge Certificate alongside Supporting Qualifications. The requirements of both the Skills Challenge Certificate and Supporting Qualifications must be met in order to achieve the overarching Welsh Baccalaureate.

The Skills Challenge Certificate consists of four components which are followed by all learners:

➔ Individual Project ➔ Enterprise and Employability Challenge➔ Global Citizenship Challenge ➔ Community Challenge

This route is ideal for a small number of students who achieve mainly D/E grades at GCSE and need to consolidate their base at Level 2. Students will pursue a vocational route studying Level 2 BTECs in:

➔ Travel and Tourism➔ ICT➔ Vocational Skills

In addition, students will study the Level 2 Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. Depending on results and previous track record, it may be possible to follow a mix of AS, BTEC Levels 2/3, re-sits and vocational courses. This would be decided through careful consultation between student, parent/carer and the Head of Post 16.

VOCATIONAL ROUTE (Level 2 - Lliswerry)

WELSH BACCALAUREATEThe central focus of the Welsh Baccalaureate at Advanced level is to provide a vehicle for level 3 learners to consolidate and progress the development of essential and employability skills. The Welsh Baccalaureate will encourage the learner to value skills development as a key aspect of education and lifelong learning. Offering a learning experience relevant to the needs and demands of the workplace will develop learners’ confidence, drive and initiative, preparing them to enter, succeed and progress in the world of work. Through the Welsh Baccalaureate, learners will raise their skills levels and confidence, enabling and empowering them to take their place as responsible and active citizens within a diverse society. Alongside and through the development of skills, the Welsh Baccalaureate provides learners with the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of society, the community in which they live and an awareness of global issues, events and perspectives.

The Supporting Qualifications include two mandatory GCSEs of English Language or Welsh Language together with Mathematics-Numeracy at grades A*-C. Learners require two A levels grade A*- E.

The Skills Challenge Certificate has been designed to include learning and assessment which will enthuse, engage and motivate learners in the classroom, the workplace and the wider community. Learners will be required to consider how the application of their learning may impact on individuals, employers, society and the environment.

The qualification has been devised around the concept of a ‘plan, do, and review’ approach to learning where learners are introduced to a context for learning, planning activities, carrying out activities, reviewing outcomes and learning. Individual Project plus Three Challenges Advanced Skills

EXPECTATIONS FOR POST 16An important aim of students in Post 16 is to achieve good outcomes and either gain entry to Higher Education or offer better qualifications to potential employers.

If our schools are to be successful in helping you achieve your potential, then it is important that you play your part too. The staff therefore expect that you will:

➔ attend school regularly and arrive punctually for all lessons; tutorials and assemblies;➔ organise study programmes carefully so that no time is wasted and the set work is done

thoroughly and handed in on time;➔ do work beyond that which is set, so as to develop a wider understanding of the subjects

being studied;➔ become involved in the life of the school by taking part in clubs, drama productions, social

and charity events;➔ try to get to know your tutor and your subject teachers well, so that you will feel able to

discuss any problems with them;➔ set a good example to the rest of the school, for example by wearing correct uniform,

behaving well at all times;➔ inform your tutor and subject teachers in advance if you know you are going to be away

from school;➔ ensure that any part-time work commitments do NOT interfere with your academic studies;➔ take responsibility for your own learning and use your private study in a purposeful way.

LEARNING AGREEMENTWhen you join Post 16, you are asked to sign a ‘Learning Agreement’, which sets out the basic requirements expected of you if you are to be successful in your studies. This Agreement formalises and quantifies the expectations above and in addition sets clear standards for internet usage and general on-line safety.

The Government has a system of Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) payments to Post 16 students to encourage more to stay on at school. The level of payment is dependent upon family income, but if this is below £20,817 per year you should qualify for the allowance, or £23,077 or less and there’s more than one young person who qualifies for Child Benefit in the household.

Payment is not automatic. To qualify, you must sign the Learning Agreement referred to above and follow its requirements. Attendance returns are submitted by the school every week. Payments have to be withheld if attendance is unsatisfactory or absence is unauthorised or behaviour is poor.

Application forms for EMA will be available during the Summer Term and again on results / enrolment days.

Entering Post 16 at St Julian’s was not a difficult decision to make, and looking back on my experiences here, I know that I made the right decision to return after Year 11. Post 16 gave me an enormous sense of self belief and an attitude to always strive to be the best I can possibly be. Due to this, Post 16 set me up to apply to university to study History and pursue a career in the Police. All 4 subjects I study (Sociology, History, RS and Welsh Baccalaureate) have given me the skills and knowledge of the world and people around me I need to prepare myself for university and then my future career.

The advice I can give is to not let anyone get in the way of pursuing what youwant to achieve inlife.

Looking back at all the pathways I could have taken after Year 11, I am so happy that I decided to join Post 16. Post 16 gave me the opportunity to build my confidence, find my independence and reach my goals; all while furthering my education. Choosing my courses was difficult, especially because I had no set career plans. In the end, I went with my instinct and the subjects I love; Physics, Maths, and Spanish, along with the Welsh Baccalaureate. Being part of Post 16 meant that even though my aspirations are very high and untraditional, I still had encouragement from everyone around me. This led me to applying for university in the USA, which is where I hope to continue my journey. My onlypiece of advicewould be to go withyour instinctsbecause anything ispossible, no matter your A Levels.

AT:

Level 3 courses are difficult courses and you should prepare to work hard and organise your time effectively between now and the end of the school year.

Please take the time to read through each of the course choices and check the entry requirements carefully against your predicted grades.

Most students will take 3x AS level/BTEC qualifications and the compulsory Welsh Baccalaureate.

There may be the option to take 4x AS Level qualifications, along with the compulsory Welsh Baccalaureate, however this will be decided in discussion with the Head of Post 16, based on your current predicted grades and your future career aspirations.

Use the Pathways Grid and the table below to make a note of your choices before speaking with Heads of Department about the courses themselves. Remember, you can only choose one subject in each pathway. (For example you could not choose to study both Physics and Sociology as they are both in Pathway A.)
