Scientists at Harvard and MIT have found a way to switch off the gene that causes the body to store fat. While a pill to ‘cure’ this gene is some way off, the discovery changes perceptions that obesity is all due to overeating. ‘Our fat
cells play a role in how food gets used,’ says Dr Clifford Rosen. ‘Now we have a pathway for drugs to make fat cells work differently.’

We all know that staying ft is good for you, but a new study by the Alberta Health Services in Canada has found that just 45 minutes of exercise each day will help reduce the risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. ‘Our fndings provide a basis for encouraging post-menopausal women to exercise at least 300 minutes a week,’ says researcher Dr Christine Friedenreich. Current guidelines recommend 21 minutes of exercise a day, so pushing yourself that bit further could have a huge effect.
