Dear Friends,
The way words develop or change their meaning over time is very interesting. For instance, the Roman Empire was divided into areas to be administered by a Governor (appointed by the Emperor), and the word used to describe this area was diocese. These areas were subdivided into smaller districts which were called parishes. And when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire these words were also used to describe the areas looked after by bishops and priests.
The parochial system was introduced into England quite early on by the Church, though some scholars argue that its roots go back even earlier, to pagan times when the landlord was required to provide a priest for his people.
Whatever the origins of the system it has meant that everyone lives in one parish or another, and that the church is responsible for every person living in that parish, regardless of what their faith may be or even if they have none. This is why the church is described as the parish church. The church cares for all in the parish, for it serves all the community. Anyone living in a parish can bring their child for baptism in the church, or be baptised in it themselves. Baptism or Christening can only be delayed for instruction.
As long as certain legal conditions are fulfilled, anyone living in the parish may be married in their parish church. And anyone dying in the parish, irrespective of whether or not they were parishioners, has a right to be buried in the local churchyard. This was of course a move by the Victorians to dispose of the bodies of vagrants who died in the parish.
The old sense of community is being lost, including the sense that the parish church is just that - it is the church for the parish. These days it is often seen in the same light as any other club in the community. People think it only exists for those who attend or who believe the same things. It has no relevance for anyone outside the club. You’ve got to be a member in order to use it.
No you haven’t. It is the parish church. It serves everyone in the parish. Any and everyone is welcome inside its doors, and to use its services.
How much longer the parish system will continue is anyone’s guess. How much longer there will be a church available for every community, large or small, is again anyone’s guess. Sooner or later, if things carry on as they are, major decisions will have to made about the future of the parish and its churches. Will they be sold? Will they be demolished? Allowed to fall into ruin? We do not know, and unfortunately the parish will not know how much their church means to the community until it has gone.
The future of every parish church is something we should all be thinking and praying about because it affects us all. After all, it is the parish church.

I was a bit short of current photos for our July front cover, so I’ve opted for some
pictures of our three churches – St Peter’s, Edgmond (top left), St Lawrence’s,
Preston Wealdmoors in the middle and St Chad’s, Kynnersley below. Read how
important these churches are in the Rector’s letter on page 1. On the right is a
beautiful photo sent to me by Diana Corlett of her wonderful roses – I wish they
could be reproduced in their natural pastel creamy pink shades, and Diana wishes
you could smell them! This particular variety is Madame Alfred Carrière.
The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will cover the two
months of August and September 2016 and the deadline for contributions is
Sunday, 3rd July. I would be very grateful if you can deliver your contributions in
good time to me at the address on the inside front cover – or you can email them to
me at [email protected]. And I’m always delighted to receive your photos
(preferably by email) not just for the front cover, but also to illustrate your

CHRISTIAN AID
I would like to thank all who provided cakes and plants, and those who delivered and collected envelopes during the recent Christian Aid Week. Between Edgmond, Kynnersley and Preston you raised an impressive £1,631 which is marvellous. I do not have the final total for the whole area yet, but will publish it as soon as possible.
Please be assured that the money will be spent to help those most in need around the world.

COFFEE AND CHAT
The next Thursday Coffee Morning at St Peter’s Church, Edgmond will be on Thursday, July 21st following the 9.30 am Holy Communion Service. You don’t have to attend the service to be able to have a cup of coffee. Just turn up at the church at about 10.00 am or thereabouts, and join us for coffee (or tea) and a chat. We shall look forward to seeing you.

RECTOR’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY
We’ve discovered, thanks to the Archdeacon, that this year will be the 25th anniversary of the Rector’s Induction as our Rector. It was on November 6th 1991 at St Peter’s that Edward was inducted as Rector of Edgmond, Kynnersley and Preston upon the Wealdmoors. It is rather rare these days to find a Parish Priest who has stayed so long in one parish or group of parishes, so let’s organise a celebration.
We’ve also discovered that the Rector and Jane celebrate their Ruby Wedding Anniversary on August 7th. So another reason for a party!
MOTHERS’ UNION On Thursday 14th July we will be visiting the Shropshire Lavender Farm at Pickstock, followed by refreshments. Everyone is welcome. For further information please contact Margaret Matthews on 825976.
Mothers’ Union Celebrates the Queen’s 90th Birthday
On June 9th members of the Edgmond Branch of the Mothers’ Union celebrated the 90th birthday of the Queen by holding a tea party in St Peter’s Church for members and friends. It was a very enjoyable and informal party with lots of laughter. Those who attended enjoyed delicious home-made cakes and sponges, and also joined in the game of trying to guess the correct year of various photographs of events in the Queens’ life. Many thanks to Margaret, the Branch Leader who arranged everything and also Jane, Anne, and everyone who provided the lovely food.
FIFTH SUNDAY IN JULY
Sunday July 31st is the 5th Sunday in the month and, as is our tradition now in the six parishes, there will be only one service in the six parishes on that day. It will be a 10.30 am Holy Communion at All Saints’, Tibberton.
I know that Bishops and others do not encourage this practice, saying that every church should have a service each Sunday. But I believe that it is important that all the congregations have an opportunity to come together for worship and fellowship, and as we come together so the Church is stronger. And I also believe that it is important for the Priests and leaders of worship to have a Sunday sometimes when the pressure is off and they can have a more relaxed day. For instance, as Rector I never do less than 3 services often in 3 different churches on a typical Sunday morning, and if you include baptisms the total can be 4 or 5 services.

THE ELECTION OF THE NEW BISHOP OF LICHFIELD
In April this year I was summoned, along with all the other members of the College of Canons, to Lichfield Cathedral to elect the new Diocesan Bishop of Lichfield. This is an ancient ceremony in which the College of Canons (the Prebendaries), representing the Cathedral and the Diocese, elect the new Bishop.
We robed in the Chapter House and then processed to the Lady Chapel for the meeting which was a mixture of prayer and legal business. At the start of the meeting the Dean pointed out that this ceremony dates back to the Middle Ages and that some of the legal language and documents date back as far as King John. It was not always a foregone conclusion that the Chapter would accept the Monarch’s nomination and sometimes they elected someone else. And as recently as the Reformation in the 16th century, absence and failure to elect the Monarch’s nominee resulted in imprisonment at the very least.
So after prayers the names of each Canon was called out and if they were absent then the reason for their absence was stated. The Dean then declared that the Canons present were empowered to act in the election. We were then presented with the name of the nominee and all agreed that he be elected as Bishop of Lichfield. The result of the election was then signed and also the copies which would be sent to Her Majesty as Supreme Governor, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and which would be placed on the cathedral doors and in the Bishop’s stall. After the concluding prayers and blessing, this being the Church of England, we retired for a cup of tea, after which we all returned for Choral Evensong.

Friends of St Peter’s Church Annual General Meeting
The Friends of St Peter’s Church second Annual General Meeting will take place on
Tuesday 21st June 2016 at 7.30 pm in the church – everyone is welcome to attend
this meeting.

St Peter’s weekend
Saturday 25th June - We will be running a “Come and Sing” at St Peter’s Church
from 11am-1pm, everyone is welcome. There will be a box in Church through May and
June to put your suggestions for hymns and anthems that you would like to sing. We
will try to incorporate as many as possible. This will be followed by a light lunch for
the singers.

Saturday 25th June - The church tower will be open from 2 pm - 4 pm for guided
tours. During this time there will be a table top sale and an opportunity to buy plants,
bric-a-brac and also copies of the “From the Edge” DVD will be available for £5.
Sunday 26th June
The Clypping service will take place at 3.00 pm and this will be followed by afternoon
tea.
Everyone is welcome to join us for any/all of these activities over St Peter’s
weekend.
St Peter’s C of E School Fete 2nd July
The Chair of St Peter’s School Governors has invited the Friends of St Peter’s
Church to have an exhibition stand at their school fete on Saturday 2nd July. We are
looking for volunteers to help with this; please contact Julia, tel 550164.
Concerts – A number of concerts have been arranged for 2016 including the
Beaumaris singers on the 12th November at 7.00 pm who will be singing music with a
remembrance theme. The New College Chorale will return on the 27th November at
3.00 pm and will be singing Advent music. The St Peter’s Church Choir and the Dalen
Singers will be giving a joint concert in December and the Abraham Darby Academy
clarinet choir and saxophone ensemble are planning to give a concert for us; those
dates are to be confirmed.

PARISH WARDEN’S REPORT
By courtesy of Lee Thomas of our local SNT, I can advise that there was a daytime burglary in the village on Friday, 3rd June. This occurred in Chetwynd Road, between 1200 and 1445. It is understood that a neighbour heard a loud bang and went to investigate. It was discovered that entry had been gained at the rear of the premises. As I write, it is not yet known what (if anything) has actually been stolen.
Farm and smallholding owners are warned that there were a spate of diesel fuel thefts around Newport during the Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Any suspicious vehicles observed in rural areas should be reported immediately, as the quantities of fuel being taken would require a van to transport them.

BILL NEATE
Bill, or Billy as he was more familiarly called, was one of those increasingly rare people who was born, brought up, and lived and worked in the same village. The Neate family originated in the south of the country and came up to help build the Harper Adams College in 1901. Billy was born in the Mary Roddam Nursing Home in Lower Bar, Newport. The family lived with his grandparents in the bungalow in Shrewsbury Road which his grandparents had built and in which he lived all his life. He attended St Peter’s School and then went to Adams Grammar. As a young boy his holidays were spent with his grandparents Beddoes in Valeswood, Little Ness. When he was older he used to cycle from Edgmond to Valeswood, a journey of about 30 miles, with a stop at the top of Haughmond Hill.
In 1943 he joined the Home Guard and then in 1944 joined the Royal Army Service Corps. He was part of the D-Day Landings – his boat landed on Gold Beach and he had to drive his lorry onto the beach while that terrible battle was being fought. Like many others who had seen action Billy never spoke much about the war, but he would often speak of the places through which he passed, such as Arromanches, Conty and Caen.
At the end of the war Billy as a Sergeant and was based in Lüneburg in Northern Germany. A young German switchboard operator decided that he needed a girlfriend, and she knew just the one – her sister Irmgard. So she arranged for them to meet at the local cinema. Unfortunately they went to different cinemas! But they eventually did meet and were married in 1948. They had three children, Susan, David, and Christine. Sadly Irmi died in 1993.
By profession Bill was a carpenter and his eyes would light up when he saw a nice piece of wood and thought about what he could make from it. He made everything from sheds to furniture, garden trugs to rocking horses, dolls houses including the furniture, cupboards in the church vestry - in fact anything which took his fancy. The chickens he rescued would just wander into his shed when he was in there to see what he was up to!
Billy was a keen vegetable grower and he would sell his produce at the WI stall in Newport Market as well as help to man the stall. He was a witty, kind, generous person, always ready to help and do a good turn. He will be sadly missed. We offer our deepest sympathy to all of Bill’s family, but especially Susan, David and Christine, at this sad time.

U3A NEWPORT (SHROPSHIRE) BRANCH
The meeting in July is on Monday, July 18th (not Tuesday as usual). Paul Master will speak on “Births, Marriages and Deaths” - a newspaper man's story. Paul has had a career starting with the Shropshire Star to working freelance with the likes of the BBC and The Sun.
The venue for all meetings is the Royal British Legion Club, Audley Road, Newport. The meetings commence at 2 pm. Admission £1. Visitors are always welcome.

NEWS FROM EDGMOND PARISH COUNCIL Some time ago we invited residents to let us know if they were interested in helping keep our community clean and tidy by being ‘Community Volunteers’. The reason for this invitation was the receipt of a small grant from Veolia which would go some way towards paying for work done. We’d like to thank those of you who got in touch. The reason we have not progressed the scheme is because, on balance, it seemed a better use of resources to spend the money on a capital project rather than just maintenance. Also - it just so happens that T&W Council are promoting a ‘Street Champions’ scheme which is exactly how we thought our Community Volunteers would help to improve our local street scene!
‘Street Champions’ is a volunteer scheme that is part of the Pride in Your Community programme to encourage residents to take a more active role in their community. As a Street Champion you will provide a positive influence within your community, improving the local environment by informing the Council of areas of concern. You will be provided with a ‘Toolkit’ for reporting an issue or defect within your street or neighbourhood. All Street Champions receive an equipment request form and from this you will be able to order certain items to help you make a difference in your area. These things will include cleaning wipes, and litter picking equipment. In return for your help, T&W promise to take appropriate action as quickly as they can and keep you informed of actions that they take. Typical issues Street champions can report are:

Excessive litter
Dog fouling
Street light problems
Overhanging trees and shrubs
Pot holes and missing drain covers

We would also like to remind you of the ‘Everyday Telford’ App. If you download this to your smart phone you’ll be able to report easily these sorts of issues across the whole Borough. Obstructed rights of way can be reported via the T&W website: just click on the ‘Road or Footpath Fault’ in the ‘Report it’ box on the home page.

There will be a Farmers Market and craft fair selling locally sourced and handmade
produce and crafts at the Village Hall on Sunday 3rd July starting at 11.00 am. Tables
are £15.00 and booking forms are available from Anne Green or Denise Bishop. Entry
is free.
On Sunday 4th September we will be holding our Summer Fair and Fun Day starting at
11.00 am. Tables are available at £15 each. Please contact Anne or Denise for a
booking form.
We will be holding our Pamper night on 4th October and our Christmas Fair on 27th
November. Tables for both events are available from Anne or Denise.
If you are interested in volunteering at any of these events, please do get in touch –
