The special certifi cate in “Icons: Windows to Heaven” (†) will offer courses in the history and develop-ment of iconography, the holy work of writing an icon, and the language and symbolism of icons. Course require-ments are: The History and Develop-ment of Iconography, The Process of Writing an Icon, and Stories that Icons Tell. We are offering these courses twice in order to afford all participants the opportunity to take them if they wish.

† THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF ICONOGRAPHYThis course will explore the use of icons in the early church and their subsequentdevelopment due to historical and cultural infl uences. (Vasiliki Oldziey)

† THE PROCESS OF WRITING AN ICON Participants will learn about the entire process of writing an icon— how the iconographer prepares spiritu-ally, the materials and colors that are used and the specifi c order in which the icon is written. (Cheryl Ann Pituch)

† STORIES THAT ICONS TELL Through color, clothing, ob-jects, and placement of fi gures, icons reveal stories. Participants will learn to interpret these clues in or-der to discern their stories. Histori-cal, theological and mystical insights can also be gained by learning how to “read” icons. (Sandy Mitchell)

THE ART OF NIKO CHOCHELIAcclaimed artist, illustrator and iconographer Niko Chocheli, who is a native of the ancient Orthodox Christian nation of Georgia, will take participants on a guided tour of his work which is currently on exhibit at the Antiochian Heritage Museum. His art is a fusion of the rich traditions of Western classical art, the colorful symbolism of Eastern art, and his own Georgian Orthodox heritage. Learn about the symbolism contained in his fascinating art and the stories that it tells from the artist himself. (Niko Chocheli)

THE EDUCATING ICON How can the art and theology of the icon guide our teaching ministry in the Church? This course will look at the intersection of our teaching goals and strategies with the art, theology, and liturgical setting of the icon. (Dr. Anton Vrame)

PRAYING WITH ICONS We often use icons as a means of educating ourselves and our children about the feasts of the Church or the life of a particular saint. This course will examine how we may utilize icons in our own personal prayer life and share ideas as to how we can teach others to do so as well. The phenomenon of miracle-working icons will also be discussed. (Very Rev. Fr. George Alberts)

SAINTS OF THE ICONOCLASTIC PERIOD This course will explore the confessors and martyrs during and following the iconoclastic period. Their lives, their writings, and the continuing impact they have upon the Church will be examined. (Kh. Anna Hughes)

SCHOOLS OF ICONOGRAPHY The Orthodox Church is incredibly rich in imagery which over the centuries manifested itself through the use of icons. While the Tradition and dogma are universally the same, each culture that adopted Orthodoxy developed its own unique style in the depiction of Holy Icons. Learn about the many different schools of iconography that developed around the world throughout history. (Niko Chocheli)
