Dear Parents, Welcome back. I trust everyone had a pleasant holiday and hope that 2013 is a wonderful year for you all. I would like to take this opportunity to offer a warm welcome to all our new students. Things are already getting busy with the many exciting events planned for this term. Students of Upper Primary enjoyed a wide range of exciting events in Term 1, with the 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner and the Social Studies excursion being much talked about by students and staff alike! Mrs Wahab and Ms Fiona
Aiming High, Respecting Others, Having Fun …..
Halloween Party The UP and LP staff organised a
successful Halloween Party on the
31st of October. A very special thanks
to all the teachers who gave up their time to
make this spooky yet brilliant event happen.
Pupil’s comments:
“It was exciting and fun because
of spooky parade. Most of the
costumes were very scary,
especially the one where there
was no head!”
“Some of the pumpkin costumes were awesome!”
“We had great fun and we give the party at the canteen
10/10.”
TLC Promise Me Campaign
Our Prefects along with the
Interact Club and Student
Council, spearheaded a very successful campaign to raise
funds for a very worthy cause – the Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Several fund-
raising activities -Mufti Day, Mummy Wrapping
Competition etc. - were held throughout Term 1.
The many Party Day activities planned by our tireless
Prefects raised funds for the SPCA . They set up nail
polishing, hair braiding and hair spraying booths. It was
indeed a hit as the response was staggering.
A big thank you to all our students for organizing these
events and an even bigger thank you to all those who
donated generously.
Mufti Day
Performing Arts Department Recital
The first Performing Arts Department
Recital for 2012 was held on Friday,
30 November, 2012. With
performances ranging from soloists,
such as Victor Lim on violin, to
Woodwind Ensembles, which included Zoey Lim,
Maverick Chai, Jamil Adams and Mr Howie, there was a
piece, an ensemble and a musical style for every member
of the 100 member strong audience.
The Upper Primary choir sang a number of stirring
pieces, along with a vocal solo from Henry Hills. The
secondary students also gave their best – from an acoustic
rock version of “Life Is A Highway” by Chris Ong, Ella
Cavaliero and Sisi Davison, to the vocal harmonies and
cool choreography delivered by the effortlessly cool
“Jayshrie and The Things”.
Not to be outdone, the
Upper Primary Band and
Instrumental ECA groups
performed some delightful
pieces by Schubert and
Schumann, alongside a
well-rehearsed rendition of
Maroon Five’s “Payphone”.
The FOBISSEA Music
Festival group also presented the audience with
photographs and songs from their trip, with the Festival
Trophy being presented to the school.
All in all, this was a very successful and enjoyable
afternoon of music and another event of which our Upper
Primary student performers, and teachers, can be
justifiably proud.

Christmas Cheer –
Approximately 200 children from
various Homes in the Klang Valley
were invited to elc for Christmas
Cheer. They enjoyed the many
games organised by the Interact
Club as well as the two Bouncy Castles.
It was a day filled with laughter, singing, dancing, great
food and most importantly new friendships.
Field Trips –
To finish off Term 1, the senior students of Upper
Primary went to not one, but two museums! Double the
fun!! That’s right, under the guidance of Mr Grohowski,
students from Years 5 and 6 went to the National
Museum and to the Islamic Arts Museum. While there,
students learned about the spices that come from the
region, as well as some of the political and economic
forces that were a part of the spice trade. In addition to
learning about the history of spices in Southeast Asia,
students also got to see, feel and smell those same spices.
With the smell of cinnamon in their noses, students then
explored the main galleries a part of the National
Museum, where they searched for artifacts and answered
questions about them. Some of these artifacts and
reproductions included the Perak Man, the keris of Malay
rulers and ceramics from the colonial era.
After a picnic lunch in Lake Gardens, students got to
explore the nearby Islamic Arts Museum. In addition to
exploring some of the galleries, which included ceramics,
jewellery and armour from Islamic civilizations, students
made their own reproduction of one of the pieces on
display in the Ceramics Gallery. With the help of Year 5
and Year 6 teachers, students created their very own
plates, modelled after two patterns found in the Gallery.
The students of Year 3 & 4 were full of excitement from
the very start of the trip till they reached school just after
3.30pm. We first headed for Tenmoku Pottery which is
located in the Batu Caves industrial area. The children
toured the factory, watched a video, painted a cup and
visited the showroom where many of them purchased
pottery items on sale.
Our next stop was the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Here,
the day was good to us as the sun chose to hide behind
the clouds. The children went about enthusiastically
recognizing and naming the bird species. Feeding the
parrots with milk and watching the bird show were two
activities which were thoroughly enjoyed by the children.
Before heading back to school we stopped by
the gift shop. It was a fun-filled educational trip!
Amazing Assemblies –
Our wonderful students
took part in assemblies
over the course of
Term 1 and there were
some scintillating
performances! Every
single student gave their very best and in doing so they
have made us their teachers very, very proud.
Golden Rules –
A quick skit/assembly about the Golden Rules that are
posted in homerooms – showing bad behaviour and
discussing good behaviour.
“MERDEKA” AND “MALAYSIA DAY” –
Performing: Skits/Quiz/Acts
all celebrating Malaysian Food,
Culture, Sports, Achievements,
Buildings, Flora, Fauna, etc.
This was a great first Assembly by Year 6 Red to “kick
off” the Assemblies for the year.
Rules and Irregularities of the usage of plurals in the
English Language –
The students of 6G are a creative lot and this humorous
poem bought this to light. They came up with ideas to act
out the rules that were read by a few articulate girls in the
class. The funniest part was – ‘If vegetarians ate
vegetables what do humanitarians eat?? HUMANS!! (The
boys pounced on Joo Won, pretending to eat him!)
Promote Reading in Upper Primary
Students explored the 8 different
genres mentioned in the song: action,
sci-fi, humour, adventure, biography,
reality, mystery and fantasy by working in small groups
to create informative posters. The song Gotta Keep
Reading is based on the 2009 hit song “I Gotta Feeling”
by the Black Eyed Peas.
Raise awareness on
endangered animals and
spread the message to
protect the environment
and its habitat. The students were
assigned roles as hunters,
animals and narrators. Year 4 Red made masks of the
animals they represented. The scene was set in the jungle
and showed how poachers hunt for exotic animals whose
skin, tusks and horns are in great demand. The students
requested the audience to boycott the purchase of such
items. It was a huge success.

Try Something New –
To promote continuous
learning and learning outside
of the classroom; to show /
teach others how to do
something; to promote sharing
in groups, students Year 5 Grey showed and taught other
group members how to do a particular activity. For
example, in one group, two students showed two other
students how to play football.
To do this, the stronger pair
demonstrated the activity,
and then taught the weaker
pair how to acquire a particular
skill. This process was repeated
by the other groups, whereby
other activities and skills were
taught, including: dancing, break dancing and singing.
Upper Primary also had several guests speakers this term.
Mr Edwin Moses talked to the students about Artificial
Arteries and Organs. His talk was informative and
enlightening and we hope all those who attended found it
beneficial.
Language Day –
28th November 2012
particularly excited the
Upper Primary students
for two reasons - no
books and lessons and it
was Language Day! They
had a fabulous time, beginning with fun-filled activities
for the Year 4’s, 5’s and 6’s students in their respective
2nd Language venues.
After the 1st Break, the Year 3’s
presented a delightful five language
song and dance in Gangnam Style! The
highlight of the day was the learning of
the catchy song, Gotta Keep Reading by
Nicole Nasrallah and Janet Bergh, which
was in line with the theme, “Reading”.
The Spelling Bee competition was
another thrilling experience. For the rest of the day,
students enjoyed playing in-class Language Games before
going down to watch the Lower Primary Appreciation
Day.
