FIELD TRIP High 5 Bread Town (Years 3 & 4) The Year 3 & 4 classes went on a trip to High 5 Bread Town on Tuesday 9th April, 2013. We left school at 9.30 am. It took us about half an hour to reach the High 5 Bread factory. First, we watched a short video on the history of bread. Next, we walked through the bread museum and saw how bread was made by the Egyptians and Romans. After the museum tour, we were taken to the production line and watched with excitement how sandwich loaves and cream buns were made. We returned to school at about 12 noon and had yummy pizza for lunch! We had an amazing experience at High 5 Bread Town. By: Nik Alisha - 3R At 9:30am, we got on the bus. We ate our snack in the bus. After we got off, we took a picture with the other classes in front of the bread factory. The entrance was decorated with Egyptian images. We entered the factory and we saw a big loaf of High5 bread that was a statue. I went with my partner Hannah, whom I sat with in the back of the bus, to the small auditorium. There, the tour guide put on a video to explain the legacy of bread. The Egyptians began to make bread 5000 years ago, the poor eating hard bread and the rich eating soft bread. After that came the Romans, who improved the process of making bread. The demand for bread grew and bread became more popular. Later on, the demand for bread diminished. When the Georgians came, they invented new machines to make bread, as well as sieves to make finer flour. Soon, bread became very famous and many bakeries began to open up. Viking’s bread was not as nice as the Georgian’s bread but the Viking’s bread was hard with a hole inside, so it could be hung on a pole. Once the video was over, we approached a door, and we needed to shout High5 for it to open. After we shouted the password, we went into the museum. We saw big life-sized moving figurines, and the tour guide was very good in explaining to us about bread and how it was made. There was an Earl named Sandwich, who as the name suggests, invented the sandwich. We walked on till we got to the area where we could see the workers baking bread. Once we finished the tour of the factory, we passed many laminated pictures of flour sacks from various countries. On the way out, we received a goodie bag with a loaf of plain bread and some chocolate filled chocolate bread. After we got on the bus, we watched Madagascar 3 and received lollipops. What a good field trip! By: Chloe Wong – 4W

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Chinese New Year, also known as the spring festival, is the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar. The spring festival celebrates the start of new life and the season of ploughing and sowing. At elc, the Upper Primary students were engaged throughout the week and their artistic abilities were on display outside the Primary Art Room. The celebrations took place down at the basketball court where the mischievous yet endearing ‘lions’ entertained the crowd.

Jeneath Wong – of Year 3R has made a big impression in both the international and local golf circuits. Pint-sized Jeneath has been playing golf since the tender age of three. Her recent

winning performances include the CIMB Foundation-SportExcel-NSC-Milo, Premier Elite second and third tournaments, where she emerged runner-up in both events.

Yakult Factory Tour (Years 5 & 6) Since 2004, Yakult Malaysia has welcomed visitors for an educational tour of its state-of-the-art plant. Each tour takes approximately 1.5 hours. During the tour, fully trained public relations staff gave a presentation on the background of the company and its products. Following this, our students watched a scientific documentary on the benefits of probiotics and an animated video on the role L.casei strain Shirota plays in the maintenance of the digestive system. The students enjoyed a complimentary bottle of Yakult during the presentation. After the presentation, the students of Years 5 & 6 viewed the entire high-tech production process through the glass-walled viewing gallery. The glass walls were specially constructed to provide clear viewing and prevent contamination, accidents and interferences on the factory floor so that visitors can view what goes into Yakult without having to watch their steps.

After visiting the factories the students were treated to a pizza party on their return. They had a surprise in store when they were invited to be part of the Secondary Social Science Day. This year’s Social Science Day was a unique experience for all students and teachers alike. The four Houses worked for weeks to research and put together teams to build Museums on the 4 chosen topics - the Holocaust, the Greeks, the Egyptians and the Aztecs. Each House’s representation of facts was in its own way unique and an enjoyable experience. The ‘Museums’ promoted historical and geographical skills and helped enhance cultural awareness.
