Attendance: The Importance of Arriving on Time

Arriving at school and class on time:

• ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day • helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine • gives students time to greet their friends before class • reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. Parents and carers arriving with children after the 9:30am bell are required to attend the front office with their child to obtain a late slip before attending the classroom.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

At Wamberal Public School we focus on positively stating our expectations for our students. Our school expectations are for students to be safe, respectful learners.

This week all children have been learning about being safe, respectful learners when representing our school. This includes during excursions and events held outside of the school as well as during times when students are recognisable in the Wamberal Public School uniform.

Below are our expected behaviours:

SRL says, “Let’s be safe, respectful learners.”

Representing Our School

Safe • stay safe when travelling

Respectful • return equipment • polite talk

Learner • learn new skills • try your best

PBL Rewards Day Is Coming!

Tomorrow (Thursday) the children will be trading their SRLs for rewards. PBL Rewards Day is being held next Thursday 6 April 2017.

Before School Supervision

Parents and carers are reminded that there is no supervision at school before 9:00am and it is parental responsibility to arrange for supervision of children before that time. The YMCA Before and After School program is available to assist parents. Please telephone the centre on 0400 813 789 for more details.

Monday’s weather cooperated beautifully, ensuring that Wamberal’s Cross Country was an enormous success. Congratulations to students for their great efforts and a special mention for Mr Garrard and Mr Smith for their fabulous organisation.

Meet our Staff… Name: Monica Hercok

Role: Kinder Red classroom teacher Background: I was born in Newcastle and grew up there, enjoying a wonderful life near the popular beach areas. After completing secondary school, I attended Newcastle University (now known as Callaghan Campus), obtaining qualifications in Science and Education. I have lived on the beautiful Central Coast since 1989 and am married with three grown-up children. I enjoy travel, reading, cooking, going to the movies, attending concerts and spending time with family and friends. Teaching and Leadership Background: I began teaching on the Central Coast in 1990, working in many different schools as a casual teacher. Since 2002, I have spent most of my time at Wamberal Public School. Firstly as a casual teacher, then temporary, and finally as a permanent staff member. I have taught all grades across the school at different times, and for the past three years have happily welcomed our new students to the school in Kindergarten. Having spent so much time living and working in our local community, it has become one of my greatest pleasures to stop and chat to many of the former parents and students of our lovely school, when I am out and about in the local area.

University Competitions As in previous years, students in the primary grades (Years 3 – 6) are offered the opportunity to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), otherwise known as the ‘University Competitions’. Students wishing to participate in one or more of the competitions need to get a note from Mrs McBride. The note and money are to be returned to the class teacher before 30th March. Please see me if there are any questions. The dates and cost for each competition are:

Digital Technologies May 23rd $10 Science May 30th $10 Spelling June 14th $13 English August 1st $10 Mathematics August 15th $10

It has come to my attention that some students may have not received results/certificates from the ICAS (University tests) last year.

Please send an email to [email protected] and request a certificate.

If your child has received results in other subjects or in past years, they will have a unique code to access results online. I can also supply you with individual student codes to access the results online if required.

Hello everyone from the library in Week 10.

Students are gradually working toward the achievement of their 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge goals. All students are encouraged to take on this challenge. Why? Evidence indicates that reading is key to all learning and the achievement of positive outcomes which extend beyond academic success to general wellbeing. All students are catered for with suitable books and adjusted rules for students with special needs.

Library overdue notices will be sent home again this week: please check whether your children have been given an overdue notice. Unfortunately, some items are still overdue from 2016. These items must be returned or a payment must be made to cover their costs before students are able to borrow again. Thank you to those students who have found and returned overdue books or made payments to cover their costs.

The Central Coast Library Service is re-opening its after-school Reading Buddies tutoring service for students for Term 2 (local Gosford and Wyong council libraries). Tutoring is conducted by approved, trained, volunteers. Please contact your local library via the phone number provided in the flyer or visit your branch library.

The Central Coast Library Service will also provide a wide range of school holiday activities for children. See the attached flyer for details.

Thank you to those who have purchased items from Issue 2 of the Scholastic Book Club. Issue 2 is now closed. Not only do your children gain pleasure from their books and other items but the library also benefits from accrued purchasing credit.

Teacher Librarian

School Opal Cards

We are still having some students who are not using their Opal card or tapping on /off the bus.

If you child has lost their OPAL card or it is NOT working, parents need to go online and order a replacement card. When ordering the replacement card students / parents need to print the receipt to show the bus driver until the new card arrives.

If a student does not show a current working OPAL card the student should be paying a fare.

Regards

Stephen O'Brien (SSTS Manager)

Izabella of 6 Blue represented her athletics club at the State Athletics Carnival on the 18th and 19th March at Homebush. Izabella competed in the 1500m run and the 1100m walk events. The 1500m was run in difficult conditions in the driving rain and the competition was fierce. Izabella ran 10th with a time of 10.35, 10 seconds short of her personal best time. This places her 10th in the State for 2016/17 season.

Izabella competed in the 1100m walk and won the gold medal with a time of 5.18 which was a personal best. She won by a substantial margin and now holds the State title for this event. She will compete in the Australian Athletic Championships on 2 April at Sydney Olympic Park in the 3km walk representing the New South Wales team in this National event for Athletics Australia. She will be competing in the under 14 age group, even though she is 11 years old. Good luck Izabella! Miss Danielle Realph If any students have some amazing sporting results at a Central Coast, State or National level, make sure to write them down and come and let me know so I can spread their achievements throughout the school community.
