The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the West Georgia Wolves in year one of the David Dean era in Carrollton, as for the fourth straight week, the Wolves will take on a team that has been ranked at some point this season. This week, UWG squares off in one of the biggest rivalries in the Gulf South Conference, as the Wolves take on the Valdosta State Blazers in the Battle for the Peach Basket. LAST WEEK So far this season, if the offense is rolling, then so are the West Georgia Wolves, as for the fourth-straight victory with Dean as the head coach, UWG scored at least 34 points en route to his first Gulf South Confer- ence victory in Carrollton. Last week, it was the North Alabama Lions, as West Georgia used 17-straight points in the second half to build a 37-20 lead, then the Wolves held off the Lions for a 37-23 victory. The Blazers were idle last week, after collecting their first GSC win of the year on September 23 with a 30-19 victory on the road at West Florida. THE COACHES West Georgia is coached by Gulf South Conference veteran David Dean, who is in his first season at the helm of the UWG program. This is his 10th season as a head coach, as he spent nine years at Valdosta State until the 2015 season. Dean is 4-1 at West Georgia and has a re- cord of 83-28 overall as a head coach. Kerwin Bell was Dean’s successor at VSU and is in his second season at the helm of the Blazers. He has a record of 9-5 overall and has a 7-3 against Gulf South Conference opponents. ANOTHER PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD In four of the first five weeks of the 2017 season, the West Georgia Wolves have produced at least one player of the week honor for the Gulf South Conference. The latest to receive the honor is the GSC Defensive Player of the Week, which went on Monday to linebacker Cam Magee, who becomes the latest in a four-year run of West Georgia players who have earned that title. Against North Alabama, Magee was everywhere on defense, collecting 10 tackles and haul- ing in an interception that set up Travis Custis’ 34-yard viral video touchdown run. CUSTIS RUNS WILD Senior running back Travis Custis was a man on a mission this past week against North Alabama, as the Atlanta native just would not go down on multiple occasions. The biggest came on the run mentioned above, with West Georgia lead- ing 27-20 and 12 minutes left in the game. Custis burst through a hole up the middle and then hurdled a UNA defender on his way to the end zone, putting the Wolves up 34-20. Head Coach David DeanIn late January the University of West Georgia was faced with the task of filling a vacancy as head football coach. The job wasn’t vacant very long. David Dean was available; ready, willing, and eager to become UWG’s 11th head football coach of the modern era. Dean brings a resume to the UWG post that rivals almost any coach in the nation, at any level. Dean is this season entering his 30th season in the coaching pro-fession, his ninth at West Georgia. There is one common thread to his 29 previous seasons: David Dean is a winner. The former wide receiver at Georgia Tech was a key staff member at Valdosta State from 1988-1991. He next spent eight seasons on the staff at UWG, an era that saw the program experience a large number of firsts. That includes the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordina-tor, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason run to a second national title. How rare is a second national championship? Consider that college foot-ball has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s. During that time only three football coaches in the state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS title at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in States-boro with a pair of crowns of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II confer-ence, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous indi-vidual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 cam-paign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (20), Allison (18), and Natalie (12).

Wolves At A GlAnceWest Georgia head coach David Dean has had simple goals for his team since the beginning of the 2017 season, and one is that he wants the team to improve from week-to-week. That has happened, as his Wolves likely played their most complete game of the season last week in a 37-23 victory over four-time defending Gulf South Con-ference champion North Alabama. But a big win like that doesn’t mean that the Wolves can take a break, because the next biggest game of the year is on tap this weekend at University Stadium, as the Wolves welcome the Valdosta State Blazers to Ra-Lin Field for the Battle for the Peach Basket. West Georgia last won the basket in the 2015 season in Carrollton, but Valdos-ta State reclaimed the trophy for the in-state rivalry last year with a win in south Georgia. The Wolves feature one of the top defenses in the nation this season, ranked eighth in overall defense.

BlAzers At A GlAnceValdosta State comes into this year’s Battle for the Peach Basket in a bit of unfamiliar territory, as the Blazers are 1-2 and are coming off of their first victory of the season, a 30-19 win over West Florida on September 23. VSU was idle last week, marking the sec-ond such week this season after Hurricane Irma forced the Fort Valley State game to be cancelled in the second week of the year. VSU has had two different quarterbacks running the offense this season thus far, as Adam Robles and Rogan Wells have split time in the role. Wells, a freshman, has passed for just 196 yards in three games, but is also the team’s leading rusher thus far on the year. Dallas Baldner has been the most frequent target for the two quarterbacks this season, hauling in 15 receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown. Baldner and De’Sean Blair each have a receiving touch-down on the year and Brian Saunds has two scores for the Valdosta State offense in 2017 thus far.

This Week in the GSC Three huge in-conference battles and one non-confer-ence tilts highlights the Gulf South Conference schedule this week, including the second clash of ranked opponents this season in Cleveland, Miss. It should be a playoff-type atmosphere in Cleveland on Saturday evening, as two undefeated programs in con-ference play square off with No. 21 West Alabama taking on ninth-ranked Delta State. Both teams are 3-0 entering the week and DSU is 5-0 overall while the Tigers lost one game to Division I Samford. The Battle for the Peach Basket looms in Carrollton, as UWG head coach David Dean takes on his former team for the first time at the helm of the UWG program. The Wolves have won two straight and are 4-1 while the Blaz-ers are 1-2 overall. Both teams are 1-1 in conference play heading into the week. North Alabama continues it’s guantlet schedule, host-ing their final homecoming contest as a Division II pro-gram against Florida Tech. The Panthers are licking their wounds after falling at home to West Florida last weekend on a last-second field goal. The Shorter Hawks will actually kick off the week at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, facing off with Division I Gard-ner-Webb from Boiling Springs, NC.

Rogers Breaks OpenWolves fans have been waiting to see what #43 Korie Rogers was truly capable of, and in the fifth game of the 2017 season, they got to see it. The starting linebacker for the first five games of the year, Rogers came into the UNA game with just 13 tackles on the year, with his most coming at Delta State on the road. Against the Lions last week, the former Buford high standout and transfer from Clemson was everywhere on the field, collecting a single-game high of 12 tackles. That tied the most for any UWG player in a single game this season, as safety Montrell Pardue also had 12 against Delta State earlier this year.

Against the PassThe Wolves have been especially stingy against the pass through the first five games of the year, allowing just 119.0 yards per game through the air. That is good enough for the Wolves to have the 5th-best defense in the nation against the pass. West Georgia picked up two interceptions against North Alabama last weekend, giving the team three on the year. Cam Magee and Ramon Patton had the picks against UNA.

Gardenhire almost thereRedshirt freshman defensive end Deandre Gardenhire has started the first three games of the season, winning GSC Freshman of the Week in Week 1, and having a solid season thus far. He was instrumental in West Georgia building a 14-0 lead early in the game against North Alabama. The Camden County native had two sacks early in the game, and one of those also gave the freshman a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, setting up the Wolves’ second touchdown of the day.

Dominant DefenseThe defensive line has been getting better each week, and it seems that a different player shows what they can do on any given week. First, it was Deandre Gardenhire, followed by Jay Johnson, then Chad Price and Chris Lewis before Gardenhire had another big game last week against the Lions. The big thing to notice about those names is that none are more than a sophomore thus far in their collegiate career. Price and Johnson are each sophmores, while Lewis and Gardenhire are each in their first year of collegiate football. Through the first five games, those four players have accounted for nine of the Wolves’ 17 sacks.

Turnover Game Stepped UpHeading into the North Alabama contest, the Wolves had just two forced turnovers in the first four games of the year. Montrell Pardue had an interception in the first game of the year and Cam Magee had a fumble recovery against Albany State. The Wolves added four to that turnovers forced number against UNA, picking up two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Deandre Gardenhire and linebacker Malcolm Penny each had a fumble recovery in the win over the Lions. Magee and safety Ramon Patton had the interceptions. Magee’s interception was returned

for a touchdown, but he was ruled out of bounds at the UNA 34. The very next play ended up being very big for the university, as Travis Custis broke off a 34-yard touchdown run with a hurdle over a player that ended up as the No. 1 play on SportsCenter on Saturday evening.

Top-10 in the NCAAAgainst North Alabama, the Wolves gave up 300 yards for just the second time this season, although it was 301 yards of total offense in the contest. West Georgia is in the top-25 in eight different categories heading into the Valdosta contest this week. The Wolves are the fifth-best team against the pass na-tionally, allowing just 119 yards per game through the air. UWG also moved up to 10th in the nation in total defense this week, allowing 262.8 yards per game on the year thus far.

Under 250Three times this season, the West Georgia defense has allowed less than 250 yards in a game, with the Miles game coming in as the least yards allowed with 196. No opponent this season has gone toe-to-toe with the UWG defense and picked up their season average for yards. The biggest discrepancy in that was against Alany State, where the Wolves allowed 207 yards of total offense, which is 167 yards less than their current season average. Against Fort Valley State, the Wolves allowed 90 less than their average, followed by 68 from Miles and 50 from Delta State. UNA was the smallest number, as the Lions average seven yards more than the 301 yards allowed in the game.

Back in the RankingsThe West Georgia Wolves returned to the rankings for the first time since Week 3 in the polls that came out on Monday and Tuesday, as the Wolves came in ranked 25th by the American Football Coaches Association. On Tuesday, the Wolves were ranked 23rd in the D2Foot-ball.com poll. West Georgia was ranked in both after the first week of the year, then moved up into the top-20 in both polls after a big Week 2 victory over Miles before falling out of the rankings in the loss to Delta State.

Leaps and BoundsSenior running back Travis Custis made national head-lines over the weekend with a 34-yard touchdown run. The score came with just over 12 minutes left in the game, and Custis went virtually untouched for the first 10 yards, then hurdled a defender and barely slowed down en route to the end zone. He now averages 64.2 yards per game, good for sixth in the GSC.

Wiggins Moving UpWhile freshman kicker Trey Wiggins earned recognition as the GSC Freshman of the Week in the second week of the season, he has just recently begun to come into his own as a kicker, as he continues to kick from longer distance each week. This past week, the freshman from nearby Heard County nailed a 35-yard field goal, the longest of his career thus far. He is tied for 12th nationally in field goal percentage at .857 and is 6-for-7 on field goals this year. With extra points, he s 20-of-21 on the year. A Potent Return GameThe Wolves are strong in the return game through the first three games of the year, led by Devontae Jackson and J.J. Jones. Jackson has been electrifying on kickoff returns and Jones has been equally outstanding on punt returns. With 4.3 speed, Jones easily pulled away from the defense against Miles for a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown in Week 2 of the season. It was that return that earned the Mississippi native the Gulf South Con-ference Special Teams Player of the Week, his career first

weekly award since transferring to UWG two years ago.

Jackson All-Purpose WatchJunior running back Devontae Jackson has been an All-Gulf South Conference performer as an All-Purpose back in each of his first two seasons at UWG. This season, he is third in all-purpose yardage, averaging 117.6 yards per game. He now has 3,329 career all-purpose yards, and earlier this season became the third UWG player to eclipse 3,000 all-purpose yards in a career. Last week against UNA, Jackson had a weaving 39-yard reception that moved him into fifth all-time at West Georgia in all-purpose yards. He comes into the week needing 771 yards to become the fourth 4,000-yard man at UWG.

Leading ReceiversSixteen different receivers have come away with at least one catch during the first five games of the year, with Shaq Roland leading the way with 24 receptions for 291 yards. Emoni Williams is second on the team with 18 receptions for 215 yards on the year. Williams and senior DeNiko Carter are tied for the team lead with two touch-down receptions, while six other receivers have one catch

for a touchdown.

Vaughan Watch 2017In the 2016 season, Marcus Sayles set the school record

for games started, as with the last game of the year, he started his 45th career game at West Georgia. Senior offensive lineman Harley Vaughan will break that record today. The All-American started at left tackle for all 14 games of his freshman year in 2014, then moved to cen-ter in the following season and has started every game of his career. He comes into the today’s game with 45 starts to his credi in his career, and needs just one more to tie Sayles’ record and two to break it.

The David Dean era begins in 2016 after a solid run over the past three years. Just seven years ago, West Georgia went an entire season without a rushing touchdown, and in the past three years, the Wolves have produced a top-10 season in school history. In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touchdowns in that contest, the eighth time in school history that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
