Game 2 of the 10th season in University Stadium commences Saturday at 2 p.m., as the 19th-ranked West Georgia Wolves play host to Limestone College in the first meeting between the two programs. This wll be the second-straight week that UWG head football coach David Dean will face a program for the first time in his career as a head coach. LAST WEEK WRAP The Wolves opened the 2018 campaign with a resounding victory over visiting Catawba on Ra-Lin Field in University Stadium. West Georgia trailed early on an Indians field goal, but a touchdown pass from Willie Candler to Malik Henry put the Wolves up 7-3 at the half. In the second half, it was all West Geor- gia, as the Wolves put up 27 points en route to a 34-3 victory to open the season. Limestone traveled to Division I Gardner-Webb last week, falling by a 52-17 count. RUNNING GAME OPENS STRONG The West Georgia rushing attack, led by 2017 Harlon Hill finalist Devontae Jackson, was stellar against a tough Catawba defense in the season opener last week. Jackson rushed 19 times for 95 yards and a score, but the Wolves had 40 carries as a team for 208 yards and two scores. Sophomore Sam Ndem had four rushes for 42 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run. Freshman Christian Royalston was impressive in his collegiate debut with 26 yards on six carries. Junior quarterback Willie Candler had 38 yards rushing on the day on seven carries. DEFENSIVE LEADERSHIP For the eighth time since the 2014 season, the West Georgia defense allowed less than 200 yards of to- tal offense in the opener. Catawba rushed for just 86 yards on the afternoon and completed 13 passes for 109 yards. The UWG defensive front was impressive on the day, collecting eight tackles for a loss, including three sacks. The Wolves created three turnovers on the afternoon, recovering a fumble and picking off two passes. SPECIAL TEAMS STANDOUTS For the eighth time since the 2014 season, West Georgia returned a punt for a touchdown, with K.J. Parmer crossing the goal line for his second career score. The punt was over Parmer’s head, but he used his quickness to escape the pack and get to the right sideline. Quan Howard delivered a vicious block that took out two players and paved the way for the score. Christian Ramierez was stellar in the punting game, averaging 47.5 yards per punt over six punts. His longest of the day was 61 yards, and he dropped five punts inside the 20. West Georgia (Head Coach)........................................... 2017-2018

Head Coach David Dean By any measure David Dean’s first season as head football coach at the University of West Georgia was a success. Dean arrived in Carrollton in January 2017, on the eve of signing day, and led the Wolves to nine victories and a return to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Were there up-and-downs, and some disappointments? Certainly, but from start to finish, Dean put his stamp on a veteran roster and veteran coaching staff. The result was a Wolves team back in the national picture in Division II foot-ball. Dean was no stranger to the Carrollton campus when he returned to UWG last season. He brought with him a resume that would rival any coach in the nation. As an assistant or as a head coach, David Dean and his football teams are winners. A former wide receiver at Georgia Tech, Dean got his introduction to the wars of Gulf South Conference football in 1988 when he began a four-year run on the staff at Valdosta State. In 1992 Dean moved to Carrollton for an eight-year run on the staff at West Georgia. That stint included the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordi-nator, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 record and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason march to a second national title. That second national title with the Blazers put Dean in rare company. College football has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s, and during that time only three football coaches in this state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS crowns at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in Statesboro with a pair of championships of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II conference, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous individual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 play-ers signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 campaign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (21), Allison (19), and Natalie (13).

Game PreviewThe West Georgia Wolves moved to 8-2 all-time in home openers last week with a 34-3 victory over the visiting Catawba Indians. UWG rushed for 208 yards in the opener and the defense was stellar, allowing 195 total yards in a dominat-ing win for the Wolves. West Georgia faces a new oppo-nent this week, as Limestone has only been playing football since the 2014 season. The Wolves will be looking to continue the dominating defensive effort that allowed three points in the first quarter and nothing else for the remainder of the contest. Willie Candler completed 53 percent of his passes in the opener against a secondary that returned two All-South Atlantic Conference defensive backs last week. Of his 18 completed passes, two were for a touchdown, as he connected with seniors Malik Henry and Tevin Isom.

Game PreviewThe Limestone Saints opened the 2018 season on the road against Divi-sion I FCS Gardner-Webb, falling by a 52-17 count. The Saints played well against the Bulldogs, taking a 10-7 lead in the first quarter and trailing 21-10 at halftime. Jerko’ya Patton rushed for 100 yards in the opener, with quarter-back DJ Phillips running for one score and tossing another. Phillips was 22-for-35 with an interception on the afternoon, throwing for 204 yards in the game. Linebacker Dalton Yates was a tackling machine for the Saints in the opener, as the senior had 17 tackles in the contest, 10 more than any other player on the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore defensive back Mannie Ogletree had the first intercep-tion of the year for the Saints as well.

K.J. PARMER: PUNT RETURNERSenior receiver K.J. Parmer electrified the UWG faithful on Saturday afternoon with a 62-yard punt return for a touchdown. The score was part of a 21-point fourth quarter for the Wolves, and put UWG on top by a 27-3 count with 11:52 left in the game. It was the second of Parmer’s career in the red and black, as he had a 72-yard return for a touchdown against Shorter in 2016. BARRON BURNS LEADS THE “D”Senior linebacker Barron Burns spent the 2017 season working to get back on the field, and he was stellar on Saturday after two seasons of inaction on the field. Burns led the way with six tackles in the game for the Wolves, which was a career-high. His previous high was five, when he collected at West Alabama in 2016. FIRST SACK OF THE YEARThe first sack of the 2018 season came from the interior of the UWG defensive front, as senior defen-sive tackle Ladarius Townsend was the first to put a lick on the Catawba quarterback, dropping him for a seven-yard loss in the first half on Saturday. All-Conference defensive end Chad Price set the tone for the day with a tackle for a two-yard loss on the opening play for Catawba. COMBO SACKThe first fumble recovery of the year was a dual ef-fort from freshman defensive end Allen Johnson and junior defensive tackle Anthony Fotu. With the ball deep in Catawba territory, the Indians’ quarteback dropped back, and as he threw the ball, there was no ball there. Johnson had nearly snatched it from the quarterback’s hands. The ball landed on the ground and was immediately pounced on by Fotu to give the UWG offense great field position.

MONTRELL PARDUE FIRST PICKSenior safety Montrell Pardue was the Wolves’ leader in tackles a year ago, collecting 82 total stops on the year. He picked up where he left off last Saturday against Catawba, collecting four tackes and an interception in the UWG victory. It was the second-straight season opener with an interception for Pardue, and his third pick since joining the team in 2017. CANDLER CONNECTIONJunior quarterback Willie Candler threw for 154 yards and two touchdowns against Catawba in the opener, connecting on 18-of-34 passes in the game. Of those 18 passes, he connected with eight different wide receivers on the afternoon, with five of those eight hauling in at least two passes on the day. He completed touchdown passes of 18 and and four yards to seniors Malik Henry and Tevin Isom, respectively. MALIK HENRY LEADSSenior transfer Malik Henry was listed among the players to watch for the 2018 season, and he didn’t disappoint in the opener, hauling in a team-high four passes for 35 yards and a score on the day. The touchdown came in the second quarter, and ended up being the game-winning score for the Wolves against Catawba. JACKSON RECORD WATCHOne or two milestones are just around the corner for senior running back Devontae Jackson. He currently has 477 carries, needing just 23 rushes to become the fifth back in school history with 500 carries in a career. He also has 2,814 career rushing yards, needing just 12 yards to move into second place all-time at UWG. He also had 170 all-purpose yards last week, and now needs just a combination of 400 rushing, receiving and return yards to become the all-time leader in all-purpose yards at UWG. JOHN HURST STEPS UPJunior receiver John Hurst was one of three receiv-ers in the opener against Catawba who had at least three receptions on the day. Hurst was second in yards, picking up 34 yards on three receptions in the contest. He was one yard shy of the team lead in the opener, and tied with Jackson’s three recep-tions for second on the team. PUNTING FOR DOUGHSenior punter Christian Ramirez had a solid day at the office on Saturday, averaging 47.5 yards per punt in six punts. That is good for second in the Gulf South Conference, and he leads the GSC by a large margin in punts dropped inside the 20, as five of his six were of that variety. TURNOVER CREATIONThe West Georgia defense created three turnovers in the Catawba game, with two interceptions and one fumbe recovery. Sophomore safety Austin Barron had one of the two picks, hauling in the first interception of his career at UWG. The return after the interception brought the West Georgia crowd to their feet, as Barron’s 22-yard return gave the West Georgia offense field position deep in Catawba territory.

Inthe2016season,thefinalgameoftheyeargave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336yardsandfiverushingtouchdownsinthatcontest,theeighthtimeinschoolhistorythatUWGhadfiveormore rushing touchdowns in a single game. Inthe2014runtotheNCAASemifinals,theWolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the firsttimeinschoolhistory, shatteringboththeyardsandtouchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
