Head coach David Dean begins his second year at the helm of the UWG football program this weekend, as his Wolves take on the Catawba Indians in a non-conference battle. West Georgia is a senior-heavy team this season, with more than 30 seniors on the roster. In addition, the Wolves have a new look in the coaching staff, with only one assistant coach remaining from the 2017 season. THIS WEEK’S GAME West Georgia is coming off of a 9-4 season in 2017, as David Dean led the way to the program’s third NCAA Playoff bid in the past four seasons, reaching the second round of the playoffs before falling to eventual national runner-up West Florida. Catawba was solid as well in 2017, finishing the year with a 9-2 overall record, just missing out on a playoff bid. JACKSON LOOKING FOR HISTORY Senior running back Devontae Jackson is poised to place his name at the top of the record books at the University of West Georgia in two different categories. Jackson needs just over 500 all-purpose yards to supplant Mark Evans as the top all-purpose back in school history. Jackson comes into the season with a chance to become the second 3,000-yard running back in school history and the second 5,000-yard back as well. He needs just under 700 yards to surpass Nick Price as the top running back in school history. Jackson is currently fifth all-time in rushing yards, needing just 32 yards to pass Felix Addo for fourth place. DEFENSIVE LEADERSHIP With an entirely new defensive staff in Carrollton this season, David Dean will be dependent on return- ing leaders to pave the way for a talented defense in 2018. Junior defensive end Chad Price was an All-Gulf South Conference performer a year ago along with senior Montrell Pardue, and new defensive coordinator Dustin Landry will look to that pair for leadership in the coming season. Pardue was the top tackler on the team last season and earned Second Team All-GSC honors. CANDLER STEPS TO THE FRONT Junior quarterback Willie Candler had a season to remember in 2017, becoming the fifth quarterback in school history to earn All-Gulf South Conference honors for West Georgia. He also becomes the first All-Conference quarterback to return to the UWG backfield since Jeremy Clements in 1998. In two seasons, with only half of one season as the starter in 2016, Candler has amassed more than 3,500 passing yards, and he is fifth all-time in passing touchdowns with 35. West Georgia (Head Coach)........................................... 2017-2018

Head Coach David Dean By any measure David Dean’s first season as head football coach at the University of West Georgia was a success. Dean arrived in Carrollton in January 2017, on the eve of signing day, and led the Wolves to nine victories and a return to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Were there up-and-downs, and some disappointments? Certainly, but from start to finish, Dean put his stamp on a veteran roster and veteran coaching staff. The result was a Wolves team back in the national picture in Division II foot-ball. Dean was no stranger to the Carrollton campus when he returned to UWG last season. He brought with him a resume that would rival any coach in the nation. As an assistant or as a head coach, David Dean and his football teams are winners. A former wide receiver at Georgia Tech, Dean got his introduction to the wars of Gulf South Conference football in 1988 when he began a four-year run on the staff at Valdosta State. In 1992 Dean moved to Carrollton for an eight-year run on the staff at West Georgia. That stint included the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordi-nator, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 record and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason march to a second national title. That second national title with the Blazers put Dean in rare company. College football has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s, and during that time only three football coaches in this state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS crowns at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in Statesboro with a pair of championships of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II conference, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous individual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 play-ers signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 campaign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (21), Allison (19), and Natalie (13).

Game PreviewThe West Georgia Wolves finished the 2017 season with a 9-4 record, reach-ing the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons. The Wolves return seven players on an offense that averaged 31.7 points per game on the year in 2017, led by Gulf South Conference Offensive Play-er of the Year and Harlon Hill Finalist Devontae Jackson. The senior rushed for 1,175 yards, becoming just the third back in school history with two 1,000-yard seasons in a career. On the defensive side of the ball, five regular starters return from a defense that gave up an average of 15.2 points per game. Senior safety Montrell Pardue was the Wolves’ lead-er in tackles with 82, earning All-Gulf South Conference honors as a junior last year. At linebacker, junior Korie Rogers leads an athletic bunch. A preseason All-GSC honoree, Rogers was third on the team last year in tackles with 75, and led the Wolves with three inter-ceptions.

Game PreviewThe Catawba Indians just missed out on the 2017 playoff hunt, finishing with a solid 9-2 record. The Indians were one of the top teams in the South At-lantic Conference on both sides of the ball, averaging 31.6 points per game on the year with more than 400 yards per game. Defensively, the Indians allowed just 17.6 points per game, giv-ing up 319.7 yards per game. Catawba was particularly stingy in the passing game, allowing just six touchdown passes on the year. The top two returning tack-lers for the Indians are both corner-backs, as All-Conference corner Cris Page and Trey Murray will lead the defensive effort this season. Page was also the leader in interceptions a year ago with three. On the offensive side, Reid Carlton steps in as the new quarter-back, and his biggest returning target will be tight end Jourdan Osinskie, who had 400 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

NEW DEFENSIVE STAFFA new defensive coordinator will be on the sideline for the Wolves in the second year under head coach David Dean, as Dean brought in Dustin Landry to head up the West Georgia defense in 2018. Landry comes to UWG with a Division I pedigree, and will work with new linebackers coach J.R. Dorman and new defensive line coach Kynjee’ Cotton. He inherits a defense that was among the best in Division II in 2017, returning three All-Gulf South Conference performers and five starters. THE SECONDARYThree starters return in the secondary, led by All-Conference safety Montrell Pardue, who trans-ferred to UWG from UT-Chattanooga last season. Pardue was the Wolves’ leading tackler in 2017 with 82 tackles, including 59 solo stops. He was second on the team with 9.5 tackles for a loss, and had two interceptions on the year. At cornerback, senior Tyler Jack and junior Ashton Jackson return, and that pair have a combined 24 career starts. Jack had 35 tackles and two interceptions last season, while Jackson has 15 career tackles from the cornerback spot. A newcomer to the depth chart who has come up through the ranks is junior Chris Blackston, who has played well in preseason camp and looks to be among the starters against Catawba Saturday. THE DEFENSIVE LINEAnother All-Gulf South Conference defensive end anchors a stout defensive front for the Wolves in 2018, as junior Chad Price looks to continue as the next in what has become a long line of outstanding pass rushers at UWG. Price was named Second Team All-GSC in 2017, leading the Wolves in tackles for a loss (10.5) and sacks (7.5) in his first year as a starter. Senior defensive tackle Ledarius Townsend had 29 tackles as a junior last season, including six tackles for a loss and two sacks, and he will occupy one starter’s role this week. Price is a homegrown talent, and has three others who started their careers at UWG on the defensive front this season, including redshirt freshman end Mitchell Grimes, redshirt freshman tackle Shahin O’Neal, and sopho-more tackle Logan Johnson. THE LINEBACKERSOne starter from last season returns in the lineback-er corps for the 2018 season, as junior Korie Rogers looks to continue to lead the defense. Rogers was third on the team in tackles as a sophomore in 2017,

collecting 75 total stops, including four for a loss. He was stellar on pass defense, and was tied for the team lead with three interceptions on the year. He also had three pass breakups and six passes defended. Returning to the fold in 2018 is Barron Burns, who was a solid contributor as a junior in 2016, but sat out the 2017 season. Burns has been solid in preseason camp, and will likely be one of the starters at linebacker this year. THE BACKFIELDWest Georgia averaged more than 31 points per game a year ago with a potent offensive attack led by running back Devontae Jackson and quarter-back Willie Candler. The Wolves passed for more than 3,000 yards for the first time ever in a season, with Candler tossing just over 2,900 of those yards. As a sophomore, Candler engineered 25 touchdown passes, while the Wolves had seven different runners cross the goal line for a total of 25 rushing touchdowns. Now a junior, Candler is already a school record-holder, setting the mark for single-season passing yards last season, and Jackson is 500 all-purpose yards and 700 rushing yards away from the UWG record in both catego-ries. The tight ends and fullbacks will be a huge part of the game this year, as the Wolves feature four players at those spots. Senior Brandon Walton is the elder statesmen along with senior Noah Brown, who is second among active players with 23 career starts. Taylor Turner has been a solid player for two seasons and fullback Bijan Sirleaf saw limited action a year ago. THE OFFENSIVE LINEWest Georgia has had a run of five straight seasons with at least one All-American on the offensive line, stretching back to Jordan Ritchey in the 2012 campaign. Last season, then seniors Harley Vaughan and Desmond Harrison were given that honor to become the most recent All-Ameri-cans. This year, senior Quentin Stanford anchors a very big offensive line that features four starters for Game 1 who played significant snaps in 2017. Stanford is a three-year starter, playing both guard and tackle in his time, and he comes into the sea-son with the left tackle spot held down. Sophomore Ben Walters and senior Austin Hamilton each played well in 2017, while senior Pierre Byrd split time at guard and center. Byrd enters this season as the starter at center. The lone newcomer among the starters is junior college transfer Malik Bes-seck, who played at ASA New York and was one of the most highly sought-after tackles in the nation. THE RECEIVERSHead coach David Dean’s receiver corps was extremely deep in 2017, and this year’s group is no different, featuring six seniors among the four re-ceiver spots heading into the season. Five of those are returners, led by Emoni Williams, who was sec-ond on the team with 31 receptions for 382 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Four returners had at least 135 yards receiving last year, and eight of 18 players to receive at least one pass on the year had double-digit receptions. That includes John Hurst, Shannon Smith, Devontae Jackson, and Thomas Lester. The Wolves lost Shaq Roland, the leading receiver from 2017, but Dean brought in senior transfer Malik Henry from Georgia Southern, and Henry has quickly worked his way to the top of the depth chart.

Inthe2016season,thefinalgameoftheyeargave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336yardsandfiverushingtouchdownsinthatcontest,theeighthtimeinschoolhistorythatUWGhadfiveormore rushing touchdowns in a single game. Inthe2014runtotheNCAASemifinals,theWolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the firsttimeinschoolhistory, shatteringboththeyardsandtouchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
