Under 15’s Brighouse 12 Acorn 48 Rushworth Leads the Battle Acorn under 15’s continued their winning streak in the league, putting aside their disappointment of last week’s narrow defeat at Stanningley, who have gone on to reach the final of the Yorkshire cup. Acorn demonstrated their intentions on the very first tackle; Reece Rushworth hit the defence so hard the spectators felt it. Acorn then showed their class with some very attractive attacking rugby, but were undone in defence early on, allowing Brighouse to open the scoring. The lead didn’t last long when Reece Rushworth blasted through the defence to draw level. The talking point for the next twenty minutes was an overzealous referee, determined to stifle Acorns flair, awarded 7 penalties against Acorn and 3 very questionable forward passes all of which broke the Brighouse defence. Tom Bedda was able to ease the tension for Acorn when he bulldozed his way over the line to put Acorn in front. From the resulting kick off Mickey Long, playing his second game after returning from a spell at football caught the ball and shrugged off all would be tacklers to cover 80 metres for Acorns 3

rd try.

More enterprising rugby presented an opportunity for Jimmy Hardwick to deliver a perfect pass out wide to Reef Wilson who squeezed in to make it 6-20 at the interval. Reece Rushworth, whose efforts in defence saw him top the tackle count again, was rewarded with his second try, soon after the restart. Acorn allowed their guard down again to let Brighouse in, but responded immediately with another well taken try by Reef Wilson again set up by Jimmy Hardwick. Acorns 7

th try came from Reece Rushworth, his hatrick, before Mick-

ey Long grabbed his second after some sloppy defence by Brighouse, and final-ly Jacob Walker finished the game off with another solo effort to leave the oppo-sition shell shocked. Notable performances came from Calam McDarby, Lloyd Todd and Keiren Brown, who showed potential on his debut. But the games MOM had to go to Reece Rushworth, Top tackler, three tries and 5 conversions. Under 14’s: Acorn 62 Hillsborough 20 Acorn u14’s turned in a season best with a 12 try 62-20 win against table toppers Sheffield Hillsborough. Acorn romped to a 20 nil lead with 2 tries from fullback Bradley Winter and a 30 metre solo effort from Ryan Woodcock, goaled by Matty Chilton. Sheffield hit back with a converted try but quick thinking from hooker Jarod Sellars went over from dummy half. Winter got his hatrick with quick feet saw him go over from 30 metres. Sheffield went over in the corner to make it 28-10 at the break. After the break Acorn again on the front foot saw Alex Hardcastle go over followed by 2 quick fire tries by woodcock and Winter grabbed his 4

th. Sheffield applied pressure to score 2 tries. Acorn using good

ball skills saw Jack Innes go over in the corner converted by Chilton. Man of the Match Cain Horseman went over with 2 good worked tries, Jarod Sellars completed the scoring with a solo effort for Acorn to win 62-20.

Good afternoon to everyone and thanks for turning out to support the lads today as we welcome all who have made the long trip from Cumbri-an side Millom for today’s league encounter. We all hope the journey was a safe one. On paper and form we will probably start as favourites but you can never take things for granted and hopefully the lads can continue in the same vain as we did last week in our home defeat of Hunslet Warriors. The two games on show last Saturday served up some great entertainment for those who witnessed them as all four side`s on show played with a lot of commitment and desire. Firstly our first team who looked comfortably when they lead 16-0 but to the visitors credit clawed their way back into the contest and the match was in the balance all the way through but some terrific defence play from our lads earned the points. Our A team ,who i was fortunate to help out with last weekend , were also involved in a close encounter as they progressed into next round of the Tier 4 cup with a hard fought 32-20 win over Hull Dockers. It’s the second time these two have meet this season and just like the first close game both sides showed great discipline in another entertaining encounter. That win was followed up by another victory on Wednesday night where they won the York And District cup in anoth-er hard fought close contest over Selby Warriors so congratulations goes to the players and coaches for that achievement. Back to today’s game where our opponents are having a mixed season and are coming of the back of three home games which saw them win convincingly against Oldham St Anne's and then a narrow cup defeat to Leigh East but then suffered a league defeat to Eccles last Saturday so they will be a unknown quantity to our-selves when they arrive at Thanet Road so the lads will have to be on their guard and keep focused if we want to keep our unbeaten home run intact. Enjoy the game Mick Lumby.

Under 11’s: Acorn 30 Methley Warriors 26 Acorn win a close encounter. A strong second half performance saw the young Acorn`s claim the victory in a thoroughly entertain-ing game at Thanet Road. Acorn started slowly and through missed tackles soon found themselves down by 10 points but clawed their way back into the contest to level it up at 10 points each. Acorn then started to dominate the game and moved into a comfortable position of being 30-14 in the lead. But to the visitors credit they got back into the game and hit back to narrow the gap to just four points before time ran out for the visitors and Acorn took the contest 30-26.Try scorers for the home side were hat trick hero and Top Tackler Ben Atkins, which included a length of the field try, Man of the Match Ziggy Dudman and Josh Parker who along with hard running forward Haydon Tindall won the joint coach`s of the match award. There was good support for the try scorers from Callum Mckenzie, Ben Lumby, Nathan Rushden , Ellie Hendry and Jacob Burns. Under 9’s: Acorn 13 Birkenshaw 2 Acorn got a well deserved win 13 tries to 2. Flynn Pagdin getting 4, Ethan Suttcliffe 3, Man of the Match Liam White 2, Kai Witty 2 and Harry Sawyer 2. Who’s Here To Take on The Blue and Gold’s Today

Now in our 134th year, Millom RLFC has been recognised as a leading name in Rugby League. We are the oldest amateur rugby league club in the world and the club has many records under its belt. It has played four times as a professional club and 28 times as amateurs in the Rugby League Challenge Cup. Millom RLFC is the only club to field 12 players for their County in the Cumberland v York-shire match on 5 February 1889 at Hunslet.

Over 50 players have been awarded full international honours since 1945, and countless others have represented their County and District. 1979-80 saw a Cumbrian first when Peter Knowles was awarded the BARLA Player of the Year and 1985-86 saw another Cumbrian first when Millom played Mysons of Hull in the BARLA National Cup Final. In November 1986 Millom gave Wakefield Trinity a scare losing 14-8 in the John Player Trophy. Recently the club have added a new set of changing facilities to its impressive Devonshire Road home, when together with Sport England Lottery Money, a grant from the Cumbria Regeneration Board and the local town and district council, the finances were found and the building completed and opened by HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh. Millom is a club steeped in tradition and the first team currently plays in the National Conference League Division 2, with the A team representing the club in the Barrow and District League. As well as the open age teams, Millom also has a thriving youth set-up with teams at U8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 level playing in the local competitions.

Welcome to Thanet Road for todays encounter against Mil-lom, We really turned up last week against Hunslet Warriors and it was pleasing to see that in attack and defence we gave 100% commitment, nothing else short of that today will be enough in which is sure to be a tough match. As the old adage goes any successful league campaign starts with winning your home games which makes todays match vital, and if we don't perform to the standards set all the hard work from last weekend goes out of the window. We will have some enforced changes today as we are carrying a few injuries but that gives somebody else an oppor-tunity, as we will continue to give as many players as possible a chance in the first team. Finally congratulations to the second team for winning the York and District cup on Wednesday night, it was particularly good to see a couple of the under 18 lads getting a chance which bodes well for the future,

Come on the ‘Corn’, Scott

The Blue and Gold’s in Action

Last Time Out: Saturday 19th May 2012 York Acorn 28-22 Hunslet Warriors Acorn tough it out to earn excellent victory Acorn had to turn in their best performance of the season to overhaul a strong physical Hunslet Warriors. But it all looked so good early on as Acorn romped into a 16 point lead as they tore their opponents apart with some electrifying rugby. Full back Leigh Rientoul had two tries on the board in five minutes as his excellent support play was rewarded after both Tom Hill and Tim Elliott had created space for him to gallop over from 30 yards on each occasion, Anthony Chilton tagged on the goal for his second try and then on 12 minutes Joe Budd crossed, again after some excellent support play Chil-ton goaled and the blue and golds had a healthy 16 point advantage. The Warriors struck back when prop Liam Gale barged over from close range Fullback Gary McClelland goaled to. Get the Hunslet side on the scoresheet. Acorn stuck to their guns though and hooker Kevin Brayshaw restored the advantage when he dived over from acting half on 26 minutes with Chilton goaling. The warriors though were beginning to have more of the game and they converted this possession into points on 38 minutes when Karl Gunney scored after an impressive attack, McClelland goaled and then on the stroke of half time Matty Scott went over from close range and with the conversion slotted by McClelland the game was tight at 22 points to 18. Crucially Joe Budd bagged his second try after a superb Rien-toul break on 42 minutes and with Chilton goaling Acorn had a 10 point lead. Hunslet reduced the lead on 66 minutes when second row Mick Lyons crashed over in the corner and from that moment discounting one or two Acorn attacks it was backs to the wall as the Warriors threw everything at the Acorn line, The home side though stood firm with defence at times which was nothing short of heroic sealing a superb and deserved victory, Adam Endersby was Acorn's man of the match on a day when the win was only obtained after an excellent overall team performance.

What the papers say.....

SCOTT RHODES is hoping his York Acorn ARLC side can build on “the best attacking display” under his coaching reign as they look to continue their promo-tion challenge in National Conference League division one. The Blue and Golds bounced back from their first defeat of term at Egremont to beat much-fancied Hunslet Warriors 28-22 last week and stay on the shoulders of the leaders. They will be without key men Tom Hill (unavailable), Mike Emble-ton (hamstring) and Matt Withers (knee) on Saturday when they entertain a Mil-lom side who lie in the bottom half of the table, but Rhodes has a number of players back knocking on the door, and he hopes the side can continue where they left off last week. “We did quite a few things wrong at Egremont but we had a chat about things and to be fair we put those wrong things right against Hunslet,” said former York City Knights captain Rhodes, now 19 months into his tenure at Thanet Road. “It was a massive performance attack-wise – the best I’ve seen at the club. It was that good.” He added: “We’ve three key players out this weekend but it gives someone else a chance to impress and we’ve got plenty of options.” Rhodes was waiting to see how the ‘A’ team came through last night’s York and District Cup final against Selby Warriors before deciding on his line-up, but Matthew Woods and Chris Rushworth, who have been playing reserve rugby recently, are in contention for a call-up.

Acorn ran out winners in a pulsating York & District cup final by 32 points to 22. The scores were tied at 22 points all after 67 minutes but two Karl Harton tries in the last 3 minutes saw the blue and golds home. Acorn scored early when Steve Doswell scored off a short pass then on 10 minutes James Cooper ghosted through a gap to go over, Kenny Shepherd goaled both efforts for a 12 point lead. Stand off Ben Pearson got Selby's opener on 15 minutes after some slack Acorn defence Gavin Lightowler goaled. On 30 minutes after a disallowed War-riors effort Adam Sellers went over in the corner directly from an Acorn penalty. Right on the stroke of half time after good work from Wayne Fennell Kyle Jarrett went over for a good try Lightowler goaled for 16 points to 12 at half time. Selby started the second half the better side and Chris o'neill levelled on 58 minutes after good work down the right hand side. Acorn hit back on 65 minutes when Tom Hill burst up the centre field to give the supporting Shepherd an easy 20 yard sprint to the line, and with him adding the goal Acorn led by 22 points to 16. Selby though hit back almost immediately and some superb interplay saw O'Neil grab his second and with Lightowler goaling the game was locked up at 22 points all. As the pressure mounted both sides missed shots at penalties. Then came the Harton late show aided wth a Shepherd conversion to seal the victory for Acorn. Wayne Fennell was outstanding for Selby, for Acorn under 18 players Joel Johnson and Joe Porter both had sound games along with Carl Loft who worked tirelessly.
