*Call to Worship:
God in the Spirit revealed in Jesus call us by grace
to be renewed in the image of our Creator,
that we may be one in divine love for God and for the world.
*Opening Hymn A Mother Lined a Basket Black Hymnal 2189
(sung to the tune of 303 – The Day of Resurrection)
*Opening Prayer:
Give us laughter, O Source of our life.
Laughter can banish so much of our strife.
Laughter and love give us wholeness and health.
Laughter and love are the coins of true wealth.
Even in sorrow and hours of grief,
laughter with tears brings much healing relief.
O God, give us laughter, and – God –
give us peace and the joy of your promise to be among us,
in this time and through all the days of our lives.
Amen.

THE SACRED WORD
Various portions of the Bible were written originally in one of three languages:
Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek.
The first five books of the Bible are known variously as Torah, “The Law,” and “The
Law of Moses.” Their order can be remembered by the phrase, “Giant Elephants
Love North Dakota” (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) – a
method devised by one of Pastor Jerry’s former confirmation students.
The longest book chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119, the shortest is Psalm 117.
In the Old Testament times, the Mediterranean Sea was called the Great Sea.
At present, the relative multitude of biblical publishers have hundreds of
competing versions on the market, with special editions for children, youth,
women, men, hunters, military personnel, healthcare workers, and on and on.
These bibles use over two dozen current English translations, with the NIV (New
International Version) the bestselling.
The Revised Common Lectionary is a three-year cycle of biblical texts that is used
by a variety of denominations, churches, and clergy to provide a general survey of
biblical content. The most often used lectionary provides for each Sunday an Old
Testament reading, a selection from Psalms, a Gospel lesson, and another set of
verses from the other New Testament books. There are some denominational
variations to the lectionary, as well as daily lectionaries that provide readings for
every day of the three-year cycle.
In many English translations, the proper name of God (“YHWH”) is printed as LORD
with all caps. The same name is shown as Adonai in Hebrew, as Kyrios in Greek,
and as Dominus in Latin texts.
Note: There is a very special exhibit of the St. John’s Bible at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead now through December 31. Admission is $15 ($14 senior and student, $10 children 5-17). This is an amazing opportunity to see many folios as well as learn about the production of this hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible. Group rates are available. The program guide can be downloaded at
