Formed in 1981 and based in the Waterloo Region, the Wellington Winds is a concert band of Central Ontario’s finest musicians. Many are performing professionally or are music educators. This is the Wellington Winds’ 28th season of outstanding, entertaining concerts that present varied programs of the best of familiar music and also new music that has appeal to a wide audience. The Winds concerts are known for their informal approach and enjoyable commentary. The Wellington Winds has released a number of CDs, including a studio-recorded CD of works by local composers, An Artist’s Neighbourhood. In addition to their annual series, they have performed with the K-W Philharmonic Choir, at MusicFest Canada in Toronto, at the Guelph Spring Festival, in workshops for students, and for the Canadian Music Educators’ Conference. Music Director Michael Purves-Smith is a member of the Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he directs the University Wind Ensemble and the Baroque Ensemble. Well known as a conductor, adjudicator, composer, arranger, and performer, he brings a deep commitment to the development of fine community music-making. This is the Wellington Winds’ 28th season of outstanding, entertaining concerts that present varied programs of the best of familiar music and also new music that has appeal to a wide audience. The Winds concerts are known for their informal approach and enjoyable commentary. The Wellington Winds has released a number of CDs, including a studio-recorded CD of works by local composers, An Artist’s Neighbourhood.

In addition to their annual series, they have performed with the K-W Philhar monic Choir, at MusicFest Canada in Toronto, at the Guelph Spring Festival, in workshops for students, and for the Canadian Music Educators’ Conference.

Musique des compositeurs français y compris Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, Susato’s Danserye, Germaine Tailleferre’s Suite, Planquette’s Marche Sambre et Meuse, Satie’s Gymnopédie, and music from Schönberg’s Les Misérables. Our soprano soloist Caroline Déry will sing Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen, three songs by Cécile Chaminade, and a medley of Édith Piaf songs. This concert will celebrate International Women’s Day.

Our season finale features some special favourites of the Wellington Winds, including Strauss’ tone poem Don Juan, Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy, and Leemans’ March of the Belgian Paratroopers. The Winds will perform Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals with the accompanying Ogden Nash poetry read by Ted Follows. Percussionist Mike Bronson will perform Jacob’s Concerto for Timpani and Winds.

Music by American composers or with American connections, including Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine, Copland’s Quiet City, Williams’ Harry Potter Symphonic Suite, Sousa’s Semper Fidelis, Fillmore’s Lassus Trombone, Chance’s Elegy, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and Dvorak’s Finale from the New World Symphony. Chanteuse Michèle Kaye will sing a Cole Porter Medley and flutist Tawnya Moore will play Griffes’ Poem for Flute and Winds.

Advent and the World of Dance

Our program combines music to herald the Christmas season with music from the world of dance, including Bach’s Wachet Auf, an arrangement of Veni Emmanuel, Holst’s Christmas Morning for Brass, Marricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe, a Slavonic Dance by Dvorak, Strauss’ Dance of the Seven Veils, Shostakovich’s Polka from the ballet The Bolt, Byrd’s Earl of Oxford’s March, Albeniz’ Mallorca, Moncayo’s Huapango, and several Leroy Anderson favourites.
