WELCOME to the JULY 2020
Four Seasons Veterans’ Club Flyer
Through the overwhelming support of our friends and neighbors in the Four Seasons community, the Veterans’ Club extends our sincerest thanks to those who value the contribution of Vets who have defended our Nation. Vets & Residents of the Four Seasons community, we plan to have our first post COVID-19 meeting on August 10th. We hope to see you there. More to follow. Papercopy FLYERS will be hand distributed to all Veteran Club members beginning immediately. If you don’t receive a copy, let us know.
Notes from our Editorial Staff: Residents of Four Seasons
will see that our Vets’ Club has been active during the
pandemic shutdown. For example, we discuss our upcoming
4th
of July Motorcade on the next page … hope to see you
there. Good news, our Planning Committee is looking to re-
start meetings at the Clubhouse in August - pending approval
from our Board of Trustees. We are also working hard to help
veterans in need.
Korean War Veterans Recognized: The month of July is
Korean War Veterans’ Month; internationally recognized by
many countries that participated in this United Nations action. An armistice
was signed on July 27, 1953 after three bloody years that claimed the lives of
33,739 Americans in combat.

Shoebox Coordinator: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night nor
threat of COVID-19 stays this courier from snail-like completion of my
appointed duties. Even though I was never in the military, I’m proud to say that
with military-like precision, our Shoebox deliveries continue and our military
services thank us for not forgetting them so far from home. With masks on, the
Four Seasons Veterans’ Club has continued sending 4 to 5 boxes a month and
will continue doing so until every American serviceman and woman is home and
safe. Due to the continuing lockdown, please call me, Nancy Schweiker, at 609-
241-8289 or email to [email protected] and I will come to you to pickup
any donations. Donations currently needed are: cookies, tuna, 3-in-1 men’s
shampoo, Slim Jim’s, beef jerky, toothpaste, baby wipes (non-alcoholic), socks,
T-shirts, men’s underwear, and any donations towards postage. Thank you.
Curbside Flag Requests: Frank Hackbarth
reports that so far this year, we have installed over
170 curbside flags including those requested by
Nancy Schweiker. Other residents have installed
flags on their own; thank you. Donations have been
generous. Earl Cain and Frank picked up over 500
flags from the Atlantic County Park Service and are available for new
installments or replacements. We will be able to install them in place of older,
worn-out flags. All donations go to Operation Shoebox for our troops overseas.

Korean War Monument, Atlantic City,
NJ: The NJ Korean War Memorial was
created to ensure future generations
remember and honor those who served in the
war, their legacy of honor, and the freedoms
they preserved. Originally dedicated in
November 2000, it honors 191,000 New
Jerseyans who served in the conflict. The
memorial is rated as one of the top 10 sites to
see in Atlantic County. The Korean War is
often referred to as the “forgotten war.”
Those who served should never be forgotten.

Flying Cadet Magazine: In late 1944, Four Seasons’ veteran Myron “Moe”
Pukowsky of Chatham Village walked into a local store to buy his favorite
magazine. He was 15 years old at the time and was interested in learning to fly.
A little military humor: My neighbor didn’t
“get” the humor in this cartoon by Mark V. Baker.
Baker (an Army retiree) started working on his
drawing skills while still in the military. His
drawings were published regularly in the Army
Times. This is one of my favorites. It shows two
Soldiers, one holding a helmet over a brick wall
(with the intent of drawing enemy fire). The
helmet has two bars in front indicating that it
belongs to a Captain, presumably their
commander. Thus, the question, “Where did you
get that helmet?” But I’m sure you “get” it.

WHAT VETERANS ARE DOING DURING THE
CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC?
As the Coronavirus Pandemic persists to keep us under lockdown, we
continue to live our lives. Our Veterans, spouses, significant others, family,
and friends are doing those things that continue to help others and keep
ourselves busy. If you would like to make a suggestion, please call Harry
Wolverton at 609-404-4649. Some of our “snowbirds” have come back from
their stay down south. Welcome home. Here are a few stories:
John Morsa happens to be an accomplished
doo-wop singer (that is really “cool”). He is
recording several songs and putting them on
Facebook for those he knows. He is also
checking in on his neighbors to make sure
they’re okay during the COVID-19
pandemic. Thank you, John for supporting
our community.
Robert Johnson is having a three-seasons room added to the back of his
house and a landscaper working to beautify his home.
Nancy and Doug Satterfield discovered several great historical shows on
Prime and cable. They really enjoyed “A Company of Heroes.” In the show,
the veterans themselves of Easy Company, along with their families recount
the horrors and the victories, the tears and blood, and the friends they lost.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:
Photo from Front Page: With her brother on her back, a war-weary Korean
girl trudges by a stalled American M-26 Pershing tank at Haengju, Korea on
June 9, 1951.
June Edition Graphic: Last month we asked “Can you identify this object?”
It was a M18A1 Claymore anti-personnel mine, first used in the Vietnam War.
It famously has the words “FRONT TOWARD ENEMY” embossed on the
front of the mine.
Who is our area’s Veteran Service Office? Call Bob Frolow at 609-677-
5700. Tell him you are a member of the Four Seasons Veterans’ Club.
Veterans Benefits Administration: Stay tuned into the Veterans Administration
efforts to help get the word out on benefits. Watch their YouTube channel to see
video overviews of how benefit programs, such as Transition Assistance (TAP) or
GI Bill are being handled. A link to their informative website is here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/vavetbenefits
IMPORTANT: Veterans being Targeted by Scammers: Veterans are twice
as likely to fall victim to scammers. Several Vets in Four Seasons have been
scammed, so be aware! There are many reasons for this; one is that we are more
trusting and share a special bond and they exploit this trust. Don’t give out
personal information except to a known source.

IMPORTANT: VA’s Pre-Need Eligibility for Free Burial in a National
Cemetery: The VA National Cemetery Administration gives Pre-Need
approval for free burial in a VA National Cemetery. Complete VA Form 40-
10007 and mail or fax. Details can be found here:
https://www.cem.va.gov/pre-need.
Can I get an official Federal Veteran ID Card? Yes, go to the VA website
here to get started. https://www.va.gov/records/get-veteran-id-cards/vic/
How Do I Request Copies of Military Records? There are several methods
to do this. We recommend that you speak with a Vet who understands the
process before attempting it yourself. Call Doug Satterfield at 570-449-4997
for more information. This link can get you started.

Photo taken May 18, 2020
Father and Son: Coast Guard CWO4
(Retired) Tom Sost recently had this picture
taken with his son. Tyler Sost attended
Pennsylvania State University on a NROTC
scholarship and commissioned a U.S. Navy
Ensign in May of 2020. Tom is the newest
member of our club and is in the process of
moving to Four Seasons. He is spending
most of his time packing, cleaning, and
landscaping his old residence. We are
proud to have more veterans joining us.
Pictures from the Past: We’re told that Galloway’s parade is the largest in
the county. Anyone attending past Galloway Parades knows that it has a long
tradition of entertaining participants, fire vehicles and ambulances, marching
bands, beauty contestants, patriotic floats, and your very own Four Seasons
Veterans’ Club members. Here are a few pictures from the past given to us by
Harry Wolverton. Thanks Harry.
CORONAVISRUS HELPFUL LINKS!!! Federal guidelines can be found here: Coronavirus Guidelines for Americans
and is based on the advice of public health officials. The NJDOH also
maintains a COVID-19 homepage to address the impact of the disease on
New Jersey. Just click on the links in RED.
