A message from Fr. Jake….. I want to begin by thanking everyone for their patience with our parking lot and sidewalks over the last ten days. The snow and ice over the last couple of weeks made has our campus very slippery, so again, your patience and caution is greatly appreciated by our staff. As I write this column the sun is shining brightly, so the conditions of the campus will be improving. I also need to give the parish several updates about ongoing events and upcoming events: The Parish Appreciation Dinner scheduled for this month has been postponed. The Parish Council is looking to possibly reschedule this event for later on in the year, but they still wanted to celebrate all of the efforts of our volunteers over the last year. Therefore, January will be Parish Appreciation Month here at OLV. A video and other special promotions will be shared with the parish through the month of January to celebrate the great work done by our parish in service of the Kingdom of God. I am happy to announce that we have reached our Annual Diocesan Appeal of $145,000 through the pledges that the diocese received at the beginning of the New Year. Thank you very much for your generous support of this annual event! As all of us honor our pledges to this campaign over the coming months, any money received over our $145,000 goal will come back to our parish to support our ministries. The Cultivating Our Future Capital Campaign now has over $1,000,000 pledged towards our $1.6 million dollar goal. Thank you to everyone who has donated over the last nine months of this campaign. If you have not yet contributed to this campaign, there is still plenty of time as this two year campaign continues. Parish Leadership will be making decisions about the projects associated with this campaign over the next two months, so I look forward to sharing those details with the parish when they become available. At the end of the month, Cameron Costello will be returning to OLV to work here in the parish until the beginning of May. Cameron is a seminarian for our diocese who was with our parish this last summer. He will be returning to complete a required parish internship for his seminary training. The ongoing pandemic will limit what he can do here in the parish, but if you see Cameron, please make sure to welcome him back to OLV. Over the last two months, the parish staff has been discussing the future of the parish, especially in regards to faith formation. It was decided by the staff that we need to form a new Faith Formation Committee that would work on doing some strategic planning in regards to how our parish will address faith formation issues in the future. I will be sharing more about the structure of this committee in the next couple of months, but I would ask that you would keep the mission and members of this committee in your prayers as they work on this essential aspect of our parish's life and mission. I want to thank in a special way the JFK faculty and staff for all of their hard work over the first semester. They did an amazing job of navigating all of the difficulties associated with the first semester of the school year. Though the challenges of this school year have not completely abated, I am confident that this amazing group of people will continue to do great work as we begin this second semester. Thank you to everyone for continuing to hold our school in your prayers. Finally, Fr. Scott and I want to thank everyone for your gifts, cards, and prayers over this Christmas season. Your generous support of us and our ministry is greatly appreciated, especially this year. Please know of our continued thoughts and prayers for all of you, and we hope and pray that we can continue to be good priests in service of you and the Kingdom of God. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.

St. Thomas Aquinas reminded us the baptism of Jesus by John was symbolic, he “consecrated” baptism, so to speak. Jesus was sinless and he was God. Our own Baptism however did cleanse us of sin and made us members of God’s family. In April, 2018 Pope Francis spoke about Baptism at the General Audience: “Therefore, Baptism is a rebirth. I am certain, quite sure, that we all remember our date of birth: certain. But I ask myself, a little doubtfully, and I ask you: do each of you recall the date of your Baptism? Some say ‘yes’ — okay. But it is a rather weak ‘yes’, because perhaps many do not remember this date. But if we celebrate birthdays, why not celebrate — or at least remember — the day of rebirth?” I will give you a homework assignment, a task to do today at home. Those of you who do not remember the date of your Baptism, ask your mother, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, ask them: “Do you know the date of my Baptism?”; and never forget it. And thank the Lord for that day, because it is the very day on which Jesus entered me, the Holy Spirit entered me. Do you understand what your homework is? We should all know the date of our Baptism. It is another birthday: the date of rebirth. Do not forget to do this, please.” So if you do not already celebrate your family members’ second birthdays, how about making this a new family tradition in 2021? Pope Francis thinks it’s a good idea!

It’s Time to “Chase the Chill” As the season gets colder, we’re hoping to help provide scarves for those in need as a ser-vice project for our Confirmation candidates. We are in need of donations of fleece fabric suitable for making into scarves, or even donations of scarves if you like to knit or crochet. Confirmation candidates will make scarves from the fleece, and then we’ll bring those scarves to local shelters and parks to give to those who need them. Donations can be dropped off in the gathering space by the main entrance. Thank you and God bless!

The Baptism of the Lord

From your Parish Nurses

Mental Health in our Seniors Mental health disorders affect about 20% of older adults in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unfortunately, nearly one in three of those seniors does not receive treatment. Careful attention to your loved one’s mental health may be even more important amid fear and stress over the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. While anxiety and concern related to the pandemic affect people of all ages, the elderly may be more susceptible to mental health disorders during this time. Isolation due to essential physical distancing preventive measures and concerns over their increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19 can take a toll on seniors’ mental health. The New York Times reports that while older adults are often reluctant to avail themselves of therapy, largely due to a lingering stigma, they may benefit from talking to a therapist. For more information please go to: World Health Organization: Mental Health of Older Adults (https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/mental-health-of-older-adults) Www.olvjfk.com - COVID-19 Information - Dealing with Depression.

Cozy Corner with the Parish Nurses Proverbs 30:8 - "Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me my daily bread." In this weeks Cozy Corner, Carol Burns, RN will discuss how poverty affects your health, especially during COVID.

Hold onto Love Teens & Parents: Life in this pandemic getting you down? Tired of all the disruptions and challenges to our everyday lives? Feeling a little depressed about it all? Need a little inspiration, a little hope, to help keep you going? Well, you’re not alone! Why not take a break from it all and join with teens and parents across our diocese for Hold On To Love, a special live stream experience filled with rest, inspiration, support, and prayer. Join Bishop Zinkula and a team of youth and adult ministry leaders to be inspired with a message of hope by Catholic composer-musician-recording artist-speaker Jesse Manibusan, to reflect and pray together, to be uplifted in song and praise, and receive support and encouragement to hold on to Love as we continue on this challenging journey. This special live stream experience will take place at 7 PM on Sunday, January 10, on the “Diocese of Davenport Youth & Young Adult Ministry” Facebook page. Take this time away for yourself and your mental health. You’ll be glad you did!

Stewardship Moment As we prepare to live out this new year, we want to acknowledge that we follow Jesus, the one who John proclaimed is more powerful. Through our own baptism, we cling to Christ’s example and strive to use our time and resources in the service of God and neighbor.

Is 2021 your year to start fresh in January and become a Mary Ann Otte 300 club member? We welcome new members anytime. A $25 contribution for 12 months makes you a member, or you can make an annual $300 payment. There is an envelope in your packet, or you can go

to www.olvjfk.com and look on the OLV Foundation pages to sign up. You can choose an amount and frequency that suits you to have your gift withdrawn from your bank account.

Fertility Awareness Info Session

health-care field; parent or grandparent of a daughter; sponsor couple; searching for an alternative to birth con-trol. Women and couples will learn about the body's natu-ral fertility signs and how to monitor and interpret them according to the Creighton Model FertilityCare© System to achieve pregnancy, avoid pregnancy or monitor reproductive health. As we continue in 2021, to make our faith a more important aspect in our lives, I invite any one interested in Social Action projects or if you have any questions about us to email Jean Simpson at: [email protected] Our next meeting is January 19th. In 1991, with strong backing from its Pastor, Father William Meyer, OLV held its first CEW weekend retreats....one for men and one for women. Through the years, the weekend retreats have been a tremendous source of spiritual growth, friendships in faith, and community building. Due to the pandemic, the February 2021 CEWs have been postponed until February of 2022. Gospel Meditation January 10, 2021 We need history. We need it in order to understand ourselves, personally and collectively. The pieces of our histories may not have always been the most positive, honest, exemplary, dignified, proud and best moments of our lives, but they are ours If we lose the memories, we will make the same mistakes again. The human soul needs a strong sense of affirmation, direction, and clear purpose. Without these essentials, we will easily run amuck and repeat the sins of our past. God’s voice throughout history has spoken precisely about this! We are reminded through the voices and example of many prophets and witnesses not to make the same mistakes again, come back to center, discover the purpose given to us by God, maintain a sense of proper direction, seek healing for wounds and be reconciled to our Creator. Baptism is so incredibly important for the salvation of humankind, not only eternally but here and now. Our existence depends upon it. It gives us the affirmation we need from God by gifting us with the same intimate relationship Jesus had with the Father. We are blessed with the direction and clear purpose we need in order to be productive stewards and faithful Christians. Baptism calls us to remember, accept, and deal with the sins and inequities of our past regardless of how hurtful and serious. We consciously choose to turn away from them and put on the new life of Christ. To do this well, we must look hard and long at our sins and failings, listen to what they are saying and learn from them. If we ignore the past, collectively or personally, or pretend that it never hap-pened, we will never grow. We will surely die. People need to hear the message, lived and spoken, delivered by the baptized members of the Body of Christ. It is an essential message of hope that is layered with visions of justice, peace, reconciliation, redemption, blessing, and healing. It is a message that helps us remember what has gone before, the graces and the sins, and bring ourselves by God’s help where we need to be. We are called to do much more than sit home behind our closed doors. We have a message to deliver. Are we ready to do so?
