Vicar’s letter February 2018 A BIG GOD? Did you cringe when you heard the now famous words of President Trump: ―My button‘s bigger than your button!‖ Did it take you back to your school days with all its juvenile arguments and occasional threats? Whatever you think of the comment made, at its root, it was about POWER! Who is strongest? Who will win if it comes to a fight? Now, actually that matters! Who has the ‗power‘ does matter. Just as how that ‗power‘ is used matters, to everyone. In the Old Testament, I see that question played out on so many occasions. Except the question was never, who has the ‗Biggest Button‘ but, who has the BIGGEST GOD. Whether the battle was between, David and Goliath or Gideon & the Midianites, Elisha and the Prophets of Baal – the bottom line was who worships the most powerful God? They didn‘t exactly say ―My God‘s bigger than your god‖ but Gideon, David, Elisha and a whole host of others believed that they worshipped a BIG GOD. A God big enough to conquer every enemy, every situation, every challenge they faced. They often needed reminding how BIG their God was. But their stories tell of a transformational belief in a big God. And today, if you are a person of ‗FAITH‘ ……how big is your God? It matters! A God worth worshipping has to be one BIG enough to walk with you through illness; through relationship breakdowns; through hard news; through hospital; through depression; through bereavement. So, how big is your God? Is your God one who cares about you? Who rejoices with you on the good days and sits with you on the bad days? Make sure you are worshipping a God who is big enough to deserve your worship, not so you can say ‗My God is bigger than your god‘ but so you can say:

―My God is bigger than me and all I will face today‖.

Revd Mick Fryer

LENT COURSE 2018 This years Lent course will be led by the Revd Mick Fryer

but hosted by Elloughton URC in their School Room and will begin with a short service of ‗Ashing‘

at 7.00pm on Wednesday 14th February in the URC.

This years course is called: On the Third Day. A brand new 5-session ecumenical course for discussion

groups written by Bishop John Pritchard –

Rationale: The resurrection is the Big Story that turned a little Jewish protest movement into a world-transforming religion. However, by Easter Monday we‘ve

almost forgotten about it and are planning our summer holidays. How can we re-capture the explosive power of the resurrection

that ricocheted around the world? How can we live in the glow of resurrection and be an Easter people?

How can ‗there and then‘ become ‗here and now‘? 5 Session titles are: Wednesday 21st February: Have I got news for you! Wednesday 28th February: So what? The implications of the Resurrection Wednesday 7th March: ‗Let him Easter in us‘ Wednesday 14th March: Celebrating and praying Easter Wednesday 21st March: A risen Church

Please sign the list in church if you would like a course booklet at £3.50 per booklet

Sue Shipp will once again host a Lent Course at her house, Church Farm, using the same material. This will be on each Thursday in Lent at 2.00pm.

If you want to join her then you can also sign up for a booklet.

St Mary‘s Elloughton Bell Ringers 2017 has been a mixed year for the Elloughton Ringers. We have struggled for numbers on many nights as we are such a small band but we have all made steady progress throughout the year and our youngest ringer, Amy, made her public debut at the Remembrance Day service in November.

As last year, we have had a steady flow of visiting ringers from all over the country and a band from the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers (YACR) visit almost every month to ring a peal. We welcomed many ringers from the YACR in September who visited whilst their Annual Striking Competition was taking place at North Cave.

We have rung throughout the year for Easter, St George‘s Day, Remembrance Sunday, the Christingle services and weddings.

Several members of the band have again attended the monthly meetings at various locations and gained valuable experience. We have also enjoyed joining with North Cave on their ringing rambles to different places and Amy enjoyed the Young Ringer‘s day at St Mary‘s Beverley and Beverley Minster.

2018 sees the launch of a national recruitment drive to attract a new generation of bell ringers to mark the centenary of the Armistice on November 11th 2018. The campaign is called Ringing Remembers. When the bells rang across the land in 1918, it was before the age of radio so they were responsible for spreading the news. The campaign aims to recreate that moment. The target of 1,400 recruits is symbolic – this was the number of bell ringers who were missing from their towers in 1918 because they had died in the trenches.

Would you be interested in seeing what bell ringing is all about? Would you like to come and try it out? Could you be one of the 1,400 new recruits? The Elloughton ringers meet every Thursday night at St Mary‘s Church, 7.00pm. Come along and join us. Contact Alister on 07751474674 (after 6pm) if you have any queries.

Friday 2nd March 2018 at All Saints‘ Church, South Cave at 2.00pm Refreshments will be served after the service.

WHAT DOES FREEDOM REALLY LOOK LIKE? We try and

maintain the momentum, but life keeps adding yet more challenges! With home and family pressures, workplace challenges, health and relationships – it‘s difficult to know what‘s worth keeping up and what to let go. But as Christian women our identity lies not in the season of our lives, nor in our roles and responsibilities – but in Christ. We’re delighted to be coming to Hull! Join us as we unpack more about what freedom really looks like. Wed 16th May 2018, 7.30pm—10.00pm Hull Community Church Early bird rates £4 if you let Debbie Goodwin or Liz know by the 20th March, after that £6 each.

When Faith Gets Shaken - Spring Tour How can we believe in a good God when life is tough? Where is God in our troubled world? Come and hear Patrick Reagan OBE (Founder of London charity XLP) speak about his experiences of long term illness, family trauma and loss, and how his faith has played a part in his life.

Joined by singer-songwriter Andy Flannagan, this evening of stories and songs is for everyone, regardless of background, faith or life experience, exploring the possibility of faith in the highs and lows of life.

Tickets: £6 Contact Debbie Goodwin if you want to come with us or get your ticket from Hull Minster Shop, or on the door (though booking is advised).
