Welcome to KI’s Fall Calendar! Use this calendar to get a taste of what’s happening over the next few months at KI. Detailed information is available on the website, in our weekly emails, in the Learning Opportunities Booklet, and will be posted in the lobby as times get closer. Register for classes and programs by contacting Paula in the main office ([email protected] or 617-277-9155). For 40 years Hazzan Saul Wachs has inspired our KI community of prayer on the High Holidays. Join us on October 1st as we share from his Torah and teachings on what promises to be a very memorable Shabbat of tribute and appreciation. ere are many community events planned for Sukkot—check the website and the Passport to Sukkot you received in the mail for more details. Some highlights are: Stew-Kot : Join us for Shabbat dinner in the Sukkah after KICKS (KI Community Kabbalat Shabbat) services, which begin at 5:52pm with Mincha. KI will provide vegetarian stew. Sides are dairy/vegan potluck. BBQ & Book in the KI Sukkah: In a more-or-less Israeli-style mangal (BBQ), members are invited to bring kosher meats and side dishes of their choice to grill in the garden, following which there will be a discussion of a book by Gershom Gorenberg, the Israeli author who is coming to speak at KI on November 9. YLD Beer & Pizza: Celebrate Sukkot under the stars at one of the most popular events of the year. Reconnect with old friends and meet new people! Singles and couples, members and non-members - everyone's welcome! Family Sukkot Program: is is the first of a four-part series called “Judaism You Can Touch: What Ritual Can Do for You.” ere will be age-appropriate learning for the entire family and dinner will be served. $15/members, $25/non-members. And don’t forget the New Members’ Sukkah Brunch, and a special invitation to celebrate at Eric Brass’ Sukkah. e holiday season closes with the Brookline Community Celebration of Simchat Torah: Join KI, Minyan Shaleym and Washington Square Minyan for festive evening services, dancing and dinner. Opportunities to Learn ere are always opportunities to learn at KI! Here are some highlights for this year: Introduction to Judaism: A course for anyone interested in exploring Judaism—interfaith couples, those considering conversion and Jews looking for adult-level basics. is class introduces the fundamentals of Jewish thought and practice. Topics include life cycle events, theology and prayer, Israel, and history. Learner’s Minyan: Have you felt awkward, frustrated or overwhelmed in a synagogue service? Now is your chance to make yourself at home with the beautiful and inspiring liturgy of our tradition. Join us to unravel the structure, choreography, and meaning of the Shabbat morning service as we pray together. No previous background in Hebrew or Jewish education is necessary, just the desire to learn. At the end of each session, we will join the Sanctuary for the last third of the service. Learn Torah Trope or Hebrew—from absolute beginners to advanced speakers, or take a crash course in how to read Hebrew with Read Hebrew America. Join Rabbi Hamilton (along with others from KI's rabbinic community) in a year-long course that will probe Jewish thinking and being, and will culminate with an Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration next year! Consider participating in this rare opportunity to lend structure and depth to your learning at KI. Families of students becoming bar/bat mitzvah before December 2012 spend the year learning and volunteering together, clarifying values and engaging in a wide range of Jewish experiences, during B’nai Mitzvah Seminars. Opportunities to Listen We are continuing our tradition of welcoming interesting & educational speakers throughout the year. Here’s a taste of who will be here this fall/winter. Amos N. Guiora, professor of law at the University of Utah, on the United Nations and a Palestinian state, Sunday, October 23rd. e event is presented by Combined Jewish Philanthropies and hosted by Kehillath Israel. Gershom Gorenberg, author of "e Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977" and "e End of Days: Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount," will speak on the state of Israeli democracy. e event, presented by e New Israel Fund and hosted by Kehillath Israel, will be moderated by Charlie Radin. Wednesday, November 9th. Erica Brown: on e Binding of Isaac, Sunday, November 6th. James Carroll, syndicated columnist and bestselling author of “Jerusalem, Jerusalem.” Monday, November 21st. And KI will welcome Israel's new Consul General to New England, Shai Bazak, for a special briefing on the lastest developments from Israel on ursday, October 13th. Opportunities for Community ere are many ways to increase your engagement with KI. Here are a few starting this fall/winter. Hartman Jerusalem Learning – Summer 2012 Orientation. Interested in joining Rabbi Hamilton in a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience in Jerusalem next summer (last week of June-first week of July, 2012)? Come out to learn more about what promises to be an exceptional learning experience at Jerusalem's Hartman Institute with some of the finest teachers in the world. Parenting rough a Jewish Lens: A 10-week journey for parents that explores core values (ikkarim) that can strengthen your family. Followed later in the year by Parenting Your Teen… rough a Jewish Lens. e practical and emotional challenges of raising a teen in today's world often seem overwhelming. Both ancient and contemporary sources of wisdom furnish deep insights, helping parents to appreciate their teen’s uniqueness and to embrace their own changing role as he/she journeys to adulthood. Tying the Knot: A Pre-Marriage Workshop for Couples: If you are planning to marry or are considering engagement, it is important to explore your relationship and begin to develop skills to handle the challenges that arise when two people share their lives. Tree of Life Quilting: Ever try collaging with fabric? Join Rabbi Rachel Silverman for a 4-session Judaic Art Quilting class, on the theme of Tree of Life. No sewing skills required (beginners welcome!). Meeting monthly, the Women’s Rosh Chodesh Group enjoys a rich variety of learning opportunities together -- from mask-making to laughter, yoga to volunteering at a soup kitchen, and more -- and looks forward to continuing in the coming year. Each session is open to women of all ages in the KI community. Rosh Chodesh: It’s a Girl ing: In partnership with Moving Traditions, KI hosts a Rosh Chodesh group for 5th and 6th grade girls. e group will be a space to enjoy each other's company each month, with activities and discussions around the themes of the year-cycle (including a lot of craft projects) and what it means to be a Jewish girl in process of becoming a teenager and a Jewish woman. Opportunities to Strengthen Shabbat Besides providing regular Shabbat services for all ages, KI continues to create ways to help deepen your experience wtih Shabbat. Mincha & Musings: Families are invited to join KI's Informal Educator, Rafi Spitzer, for Seudah Shlishit, Torah Study, and Havdalah on selected Shabbat afternoons. We'll begin by joining the congregation for mincha in the chapel, and then convene in Novakoff for snacks and learning. is program is geared for grade-school families. Introduction to Shabbes: Explore Shabbat through Jewish text, story, law, philosophy and practice. No previous experience required; open to all. Shabbaton: Mark your calendars for December 9-10, March 30-31, and June 1-2 to take the opportunity to engage with Shabbat. You'll be joining the entire KI community as we celebrate Shabbat together. ere will be spiritual davening, a chance (or two!) to connect with our community over meals, learning opportunities for all ages, and a fun-filled afternoon. KICKS Shabbat dinner: Shabbat dinner after Friday night services is sometimes a catered or pot-luck meal at shul (sometimes focused particularly on 20- and 30-somethings and often open to all), and sometimes hosted in community members’ homes. Mark your calendar now and watch your email for details as they come up. Scholars in Residence program: Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld, December 9-10 & Rabbi Shai Held, January 20-21. Cuddle-Up Shabbat: 2nd & 4th Fridays of every month. Parshat HaShavua: Rabbinic Intern Tiferet Gordon, on the 1st & 3rd Shabbat mornings, during kiddush.
