LATINO AMERICANS 500 YEARS OF HISTORYThe Delaware County District Library has been select-ed to receive a competitive Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Associa-tion. So this fall, along with our DelawaREADS book, we will be celebrating Latin American heritage from all over the world.

DELAWAREADS 2015This September and October, the Delaware County District Library is leading a community-wide reading of the 2014 best-selling novel The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez. A few of our adult book discussion groups have al-ready read the book, and the others are gearing up to read it this September. Pick up the book and read along on your own. After you’ve finished it, author Cristina Henríquez will be visiting Delaware on Fri-day, October 9. Join us at the Delaware Main Library to listen to Cristina speak about writing The Book of Unknown Americans and being an American of Latin descent. See www.delawaREADS.org for all pro-grams and information.

COVER MODELThis issue of Check It Out features Ostrander Branch Associate, Laurie Post. She embraces her Latin heri-tage and is the proud great granddaughter of the for-mer Presidente Municipal de Hermosillo (Mexico.) She is photographed with her horse, Gabriel, a 31 year-old thoroughbred who has been with her for the last 22 years. A former race horse, he took her chil-dren on their first rides. Currently, he spends his days enjoying the sun and grazing with the occasional ride.

MARY JANE SANTOS RETIRESIt’s not often that an individual works until retirement, serving one institution for an entire career. However, DCDL Director Mary Jane Santos is an individual un-like any other. This fall, the DCDL family will share sto-ries and memories as we celebrate Mary Jane’s 31+ years of library service as she enters into retirement. Many will know Mary Jane as DCDL Director, a posi-tion to which she was appointed in 2006, but her story at DCDL begins long before that. In the late ‘70s Mary Jane joined the Friends of the Library group, and subsequently became President. This led to an easy transition in the early ‘80s as a volunteer at the Main (and at the time only) Branch

of the Library. In 1984, she was officially added to the DCDL payroll as a part-time circulation clerk at the going rate of $3.15 an hour. Throughout the ‘80s she held several positions with DCDL, working in Out-reach and Community Pro-gramming. As the decade drew to a close and Mary Jane’s

family grew, she decided to further her career with a master’s degree. She enrolled at Kent State University and earned a Master of Library Science in 1992. In 1993, Mary Jane was appointed to Assistant Director of DCDL and then Director in 2006. She has been with the Library through the opening of all three branch libraries and each subsequent renovation.Outside of DCDL, Mary Jane has demonstrated her passion for community by being elected to the Dela-ware City Council, serving as Board Chair of the Del-aware Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Presi-dent of Delaware Rotary and Delaware Lions. In the library world, she has served in many positions at the Ohio Library Council (OLC), on the American Library Association’s Committee on Professional Ethics since 2007, and in 2014 was appointed chair of that com-mittee. Also in 2014, Mary Jane was honored as OLC’s Librarian of the Year.At the end of September, Mary Jane will be closing her chapter at DCDL and beginning a new one titled “Re-tirement.” Please join us at the Delaware Main Library on Wednesday, September 30 from 3 – 7 PM as we host an open house farewell party. All are welcome to stop in and enjoy refreshments while reminiscing with Mary Jane, her family and the lives she’s touched dur-ing her career at DCDL.
