From the PresidentWelcome to a new academic year at CMCC!

I hope you have had a wonderful summer and you were able to stay cool in the blistering heat while you

enjoyed your time away. With September’s return it is once again time to hit the books. But I hope you are as energized and excited for the coming months as I am.

I extend a special welcome to the newest members of our community, the Class of 2016. It’s always delightful to watch a new group of students as they embark on their journey to a future in chiropractic. Whether you are beginning Year I or a returning student, it is exciting to continue the path toward your career.

We are pleased to introduce two new facilities this year to enhance your educational experience:

I recently attended the official

opening ceremony of our expanded clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital. The health centre at 80 Bond St. brings together physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, chiropractors, psychologists, dieticians, social workers, primary care pharmacists and dentists, each of whom may play a collaborative role in patient care through internal referrals. This innovative model of interprofessional care is itself a product of collaboration between St. Michael’s Hospital, CMCC, Ryerson University, the University of Toronto, Toronto Public Health and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and the result has been groundbreaking —a tremendous benefit to patients, health professionals, researchers and students alike. CMCC is enormously proud to be a part of this exciting ”clinic of the future,” which was recently identified in the Health Innovation Report issued by the Provincial Premiers’ Council of the Federation as one of four primary care models for provincial ministers to look at as they implement reforms to health care and delivery.

As well, CMCC has partnered with the University of Ontario Institute

of Technology (UOIT) to establish the new research centre here on campus, the third research centre for CMCC. It will led by researcher Pierre Côté (Class of ’89).

This builds on CMCC's collaborative relationship with UOIT that will provide exciting benefits for students of both institutions for years to come.

Keep a lookout for our regular issues of MyCMCC Digest, as well as emails from my office and the Dean’s office for the latest news and goings-on around CMCC. Make sure you watch for an announcement in November regarding Open School Meetings as well for more in depth reports. Until then, I look forward to meeting you in the halls and seeing you at our many special events throughout the year.

From the Dean, Undergraduate Education

Welcome to the 2012-13 academic year. I hope you have had a wonderful summer and are ready for a challenging and interesting academic year. We have an exciting year planned and look forward to working with each student on your journey to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.

Interns, you are already well into your final year at CMCC, and I understand that you are off to a wonderful start. Feedback on the new internship opportunities at

St. Michael's Hospital is positive; you are busy and interprofessional collaboration is increasing. At the Campus Clinic community relationships are developing with initiatives such as the Tri-Congregational Church exercise program, which has interns working with seniors on a weekly basis.

To those of you about to enter Year III, we are all excited about the new CE3304, Integrated Clinical Practice course. This case based course will emphasize the relevant aspects of evidence based integrated clinical care to help prepare you for your clinic year.

Year II students, you are about to enter a very demanding year; work hard and stay up-to date on class work from the beginning so that you will be successful. A new lecture on the spinal cord, important content for chiropractors, has been added to Neuroanatomy. General Pathology and Immunology were

combined into a single course, Patho-Immunology, where related topics (principles of pathology and principles of immunology) are well sequenced to prepare you for General Microbiology.

For those of you joining CMCC in Year I, welcome. We have an exciting orientation planned for you and hope that you take away a strong understanding of the fact that you are part of a professional program, which carries benefits as well as responsibilities. Everyone in the Undergraduate Program is here to help you become a leader in spinal health, a Doctor of Chiropractic.

We look forward to working with each of you throughout the year.

All the best,

Lenore Edumunds

From the President, Students' Council

On behalf of your 2012-13 Students’ Council, welcome back to all students and a special welcome to the Class of 2016!

You have chosen a wonderful profession and we are all very excited to help you kick start the year with a fantastic Orientation week. Students’ Council has been working hard over the summer planning activities to help you get acquainted with the school, faculty, staff and most importantly your fellow students. Orientation week activities are scheduled for every day of the week, and events such as the ‘Dinner Cruise’ and ‘Jet Boating’ are guaranteed to leave you

with lasting memories. As a group we will be cheering on the Blue Jays on Thursday evening, and the week is set to conclude with one of the biggest social gatherings of the year, the ‘Balmy Beach Bash’ hosted by the World Congress of Chiropractic Students.

Student life is an integral part of your education at CMCC, and Students’ Council continuously works hard to ensure that there are many opportunities throughout the year for you to engage with other students and to add to your experience at CMCC.

As we gear up for another school year, our open door policy remains – please feel free to come by and see us with any questions or concerns. We are always here to help, and we look forward to meeting and working alongside you in the near future!

Good luck, and have a wonderful year!

CMCC Governor’s Club has donated $50,000 toward an additional camera to upgrade motion capture capabilities. The Biomechanics Lab has a single Optotrak Certus position sensor that allows

measurement of simple movements in a single plane (i.e. as with flexion-extension). Like imaging with x-ray, three dimensional movements require two different perspectives for best results.

Adding a second position sensor will improve the ability to measure complex movements and enhance the study of extremity adjusting as well as more complex spinal adjusting.

New position sensor for CMCC’s Biomechanics LabCertified Personal Trainers Wanted! Gold’s Gym is currently hiring certified personal trainers for their Scarborough (3660 Kingston Road) and Vaughan (7700 Keele Street) locations. Candidates must be able to provide proof of certification. Personal training experience is preferred. Both full and part time positions are available. If interested please send a cover letter and resume to [email protected]

Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.

Jenn Turner (Class of `05) accompanies Olympic Cycling Team to London

As Canada cheered on our Olympic cyclists as they raced for medals at the London Games, Jenn Turner (Class of ’05) was trackside, an integral part of the team.

Turner’s official title was Team Chiropractor, “but I also am valuable as an extra set of hands at the track,” she says. Turner extended herself beyond her role as chiropractor through helping to carry equipment, counting laps, holding bikes, videotaping, and providing treatment or taping.

“During race day, I would do a lot of the duties that are typically assigned to a person known as a Soiguenir,” Turner says, which is a French word that in cycling refers to someone who takes care of the team.

Turner learned at an early age that she wanted to be a part of the sporting world. “I knew even in high school

that I wanted to have a profession that had to do with sports,” she says. “I had some very strong role models through university and at CMCC who were chiropractors involved with sport, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps.”

Turner gives credit to both Dr. Cam Borody and Dr. Jason Pajazckowski as two very influential people during her time at CMCC.

When Canadian Olympic cyclist Zach Bell was referred to Turner for treatment at the Moveo Sport & Rehabilitation Centre in North Vancouver, she had found her way on to the Olympic team. Turner owns and works out of the Vancouver clinic, as well as the Optimum Sport Performance & Health Centre in Fraser Valley.

She says Bell, “had such good progress with his injury

that he asked if I could travel with him to the Olympic qualifying World Championships to maintain the continuity of treatment.”

“At that point, I met other team members of the national team as well as Zach’s coach, and I was integrated into the program from there.”

Turner says the hips and pelvis are the most common body parts she treats with cyclists. “It is common for muscle imbalances to develop with the athletes being in such an aerodynamic position: seated, and forward flexed for so long. These athletes don't really do a lot of running or walking for cross-training, so these

imbalances are prone to developing.”

Turner primarily works with the Track Cycling team and even travels with them as they train, but she has also worked with the Road Cycling team at World Championship competitions, and recently with the national BMX team as well.

The trip to London far exceeded all expectations, Turner says. “Not only has it been phenomenal working with the athletes for the few weeks leading up to the games but each encounter and experience at the games I am trying to savour and keep locked in my memory forever.”

While some of us watched competitions from the comfort of the couch this summer, CMCC interns Brittany Filipetti, Kari Primak and Jenny Bradshaw signed up for the Multisport Canada Triathlon on the weekend of July 7 and 8.

Primark was first in the sprint triathalon for her age group. A terrific result for her first triathlon!

Filipetti and Bradshaw were first and third for their group in the duathlon, giving each CMCC intern a spot on the podium! Congratulations to all!

Congratulations to Derek Drouin, CMCC intern Jillian Drouin’s younger brother, who brought Canada the bronze medal in high jump at the Olympic Games in London. Derek followed his sister into the sport, watching her even as she practised in elementary school. Jillian was with Derek in London for his

winning jump and described the experience as surreal, watching many of her contemporaries and friends competing at the games. An elite athlete in her own right, Jillian competed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and has a personal best of 1.89 m in high jump. An injury capped her efforts the following year, when she partially tore her patellar tendon. Though she was not a candidate for surgery, she was in the perfect environment at CMCC for conservative treatment and therapy to help her heal. Her injury forced her to modify her training and she chose to devote herself to high jump and move away from heptathlons, her other event, which consists of a seven-part competition over two days that includes 100m hurdles, high jump, shotput, long jump and javelin.

Intense practice and a natural athleticism had enabled Drouin to achieve a personal best of Olympic standards in just over three years in the event.

In year IV, Drouin is making use of the slightly less demanding schedule to ramp up her high jump training from three to four hours a day, six days a week. Time management skills and focus have enabled her to make time for her education and her passion for sport. She looks forward to being able to use her understanding of the elite athletic mindset to help other athletes in the future through her chiropractic practice. “I understand the intensity of competition and the sacrifices athletes make to compete. I know what is an acceptable level of pain, for example and how to avoid permanent injury.” An increasing awareness and sophisticated treatment of injuries makes it easier for athletes to continue in the sport they love. Her brother, Derek, for example sustained a severe Lisfranc dislocation with an associated cuboid fracture, an injury that might have been career ending a decade ago. Last year it was diagnosed and treated within five days and he went on to medal in the Olympics one year later. As Jillian Drouin combines her passions of sport and chiropractic, she gives herself the opportunity to continue to improve her personal best, and will have the opportunity to help numerous others achieve theirs.
