A message from the President

David Wickes, DC, MA President

Preparing for this annual report provided me with

a unique opportunity to reflect upon the many

accomplishments at CMCC prior to my arrival and

challenge myself to continue leading the institution

forward over the years to come.

Throughout the year, CMCC continued to nurture and

expand partnerships and developed important new

relationships with health care and academic institutions.

Such was the case after months of discussion and

negotiation, when CMCC finalized a new articulation

agreement with the University of Winnipeg. The

agreement creates a new learning pathway for

kinesiology students to enter CMCC's chiropractic

program, the first of its kind with a university in Western

Canada. The pursuit of these types of agreements

and relationships that expand our offerings, that build

bridges and initiate dialogue and understanding among

health care practitioners, academics, researchers

and policy makers will continue to generate valuable

opportunities for current and future students, health

care practitioners and ultimately patients.

Showcasing chiropractic and chiropractic research is

essential in CMCC's goal to take a key role in advancing

the profession. This year, CMCC held its biennial

symposium and launched the first joint research day

with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

On campus and within our clinics, projects to improve

our technology infrastructure and deployment of

e-health records continued. These included initiatives

to leverage technology to enhance the educational

experience for our students on campus, to provide a

superior delivery platform for our distance learning

programs and create more efficient and convenient

patient care records. In our undergraduate program,

chiropractic students were provided an enhanced web-

based learning management system, facilitating access

to electronic course resources and encouraging student

interactivity. Our new Continuing Education distance

learning platform provides a much richer learning

setting and much greater efficiency in registration and

access to course records. Our Graduate Studies Program

remapped its radiology program, increasing the

program's appeal and ensuring that it is commensurate

with master of science degree studies at other Ontario

institutions.

At the laboratory level, implementation of improved

technology in the treatment skills development

laboratory increased the ease in which technical skills

are refined and translated to patient care situations. This

work, has now been incorporated into the curriculum

and will go a long way to ensuring CMCC graduates are

confident and competent in their treatment skills.

Each of these accomplishments illustrates CMCC's

commitment to students and the profession. Thank you

for reviewing the year with me.

A message from the Chair of the Board

As we turn the pages on the final chapters of the

2013-14 academic year, it is evident that this has been

an unprecedented year, characterized by change - seen

through the forging of new academic and community

relationships, the implementation of innovative

technology in the classroom, the laboratory and the

clinics, and perhaps the most dramatic change of all -

the leadership of CMCC.

After nearly 25 years as president, Dr. Jean Moss

announced that she would be stepping down from her

role as president at the end of the academic year. With

that announcement, the Board of Governors launched

the vital search for the next president. We were looking

for an individual who had the right mix of academic

and professional experience and who would be up to

the task of continuing to bring CMCC forward, building

on its many successes. We sought someone who could

continue to provide leadership in defining the future of

the profession.

At that time, planning was already underway for

a special dinner to honour Dr. Moss and her many

accomplishments. We were delighted to be joined by so

many friends and colleagues as people travelled from

far and wide to attend. The announcement added even

more significance to a successful fundraising event from

which revenue has been placed into a fund to support

a student award to encourage leadership among our

students. This is a wonderful way to benefit future

chiropractors while providing an ongoing legacy to

honour Dr. Moss and her contributions to both CMCC and

chiropractic.

While the presidential search committee, led by Dr. Kelli

Blunt and including representatives from CMCC faculty,

staff and stakeholder groups, undertook the important

task of selecting CMCC’s next president, projects and

initiatives at CMCC continued to flourish, making the

2013-14 academic year one of the busiest to date as

faculty and staff supported the institution’s mission to

deliver world class chiropractic education, research and

patient care.

We were very pleased to announce on May 9, 2014 the

Board of Governors’ appointment of Dr. David Wickes as

CMCC’s new president. The scope of the 2013-14 annual

report encompasses the period in which Dr. Wickes

was selected, bringing with him rich perspective and

academic experience from a number of North American

chiropractic institutions. His transition into the role and

the accomplishments during his first year will be the

subject of next year’s annual report.

I know I speak for all members of the CMCC Board of

Governors in thanking each and every member and

donor who has made it possible for CMCC to remain an

international leader, continuing to blaze a trail for the

chiropractic profession within the dynamic health care

environment in Canada and abroad.

able to start him on oxygen and take

his vital signs. We were lucky in that

he never lost his pulse completely, but

he was retaining so much water that

it was hard to get an accurate blood

pressure reading from his swollen

arms.

I had never seen so much edema in

anyone and it was clear to me that this

man was in heart failure. I asked his

wife when he had last urinated and

she said that it had been over 27 hours.

We were four hours from landing in

Vancouver and I was very concerned

he wouldn’t make it. We hung a barrier

of blankets around him to maintain his

privacy should the worst case happen.

It was awful.

An inspired idea turns everything

around

After taking in a full tank of oxygen,

the patient began to regain

consciousness. My plan at that point

was to keep him calm and find

something to increase his heart rate. I

also knew that he needed some sort

of diuretic to help with the edema as

his lower lung fields sounded crackly

(indicating pulmonary edema). I

decided that coffee would be a good

option for both his heart rate and the

edema so I had him drink four cups

and waited. I didn’t know if it would

work, but it was all we had.

After two unbearably long hours and

four oxygen tanks, he was able to

go to the washroom, his breathing

improved somewhat and he regained

some colour in his face. I became

more hopeful that he would make it

to Vancouver and made sure that the

flight attendants alerted the airport so

they were ready with paramedics as

soon as we landed.

When I transferred the patient to the

paramedics, I could tell they were

surprised to hear that a chiropractor

had done all of this. I felt incredibly

proud of my profession and education

and of the chiropractors who I know

would also have stepped up to the

plate.

I definitely attribute my handling of

the situation to my education at CMCC.

Dr. Dominic Giuliano was instrumental

in teaching me how to respond

appropriately to health emergencies

and in this particular case, my

diagnosis class with Dr. Ricciardi was

vitally important in teaching me how

to listen to lung fields and assess the

cardiovascular system.

I have kept in touch with this man and

his family. I’m so happy to report that

he is home in the Philippines and doing

well.

practicing at Belleville Integrative

Health Centre (BIHC), 77 College Street,

Belleville, Ontario.

The right time and the right place

Since the inception of CMCC’s

Simulation Laboratory in 2010, CMCC

graduates have reported lifesaving

interventions, many of which they

attributed in part to the preparation

they received through working with

the manikins and the scenarios

created for this purpose. Dr. Andrea

Sorichetti (Class of ’13) shares her

story below.

Using education and ingenuity

to save a life

Dr. Andrea Sorichetti (Class of ‘13),

was on her way home from a post-

graduation trip to Asia when a

medical emergency was announced

midflight on the way home. Sorichetti

tells the story:

“About 2:00 a.m., a member of the

flight crew announced that there was

a medical emergency on the flight

and requested that anyone with

medical training come forward. So I

quickly made my way to the nearest

flight attendant who rushed me

over to a pale, elderly man gasping

for breath and holding his chest. His

wife and family were in the seats

surrounding him and were obviously

distressed.

I requested that their medical supplies

be brought over and saw that the

flight attendant was almost paralyzed

with fear. I took charge and asked for

an oxygen tank, blood pressure cuff,

stethoscope and any other available

supplies while I assessed the situation.

The man’s wife provided me with

his history and I discovered that he

had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary

Disease (COPD) that had not been

properly managed and had been

feeling light-headed during the

flight. She was unaware of what

medications he was currently taking

and besides they were all stored in

checked baggage.

He had a weak pulse and shallow

breathing and soon slipped into

unconsciousness. I got help to move

him so that I could perform CPR if

necessary, while we waited for the

supplies. It seemed like ages before

they arrived, but once they did, I was

Dr. Pierre Côté named Canada

Research Chair

Dr. Pierre Côté, Director of the

UOIT-CMCC Centre for the Study

of Disability Prevention and

Rehabilitation was awarded a

prestigious Canada Research Chair

to examine ways of advancing

treatment of disability caused by

musculoskeletal pain and injuries.

Through the Centre, Côté and

his researchers are defining best

practices for the prevention and

rehabilitation of disability and

contributing to policy development

through knowledge transfer and

exchange. The award recognises

these contributions and will

provide him the opportunity

to extend his research toward

discovering the key to faster

recovery and transforming the

lives of those suffering. This

research has the potential to affect

the health of Canadians, influence

future health policy and could

help save millions of dollars in lost

wages and insurance premiums.

CMCC faculty recognised by

health care partners

Dr. Deborah Kopansky-Giles was

honoured with the St. Michael’s

Hospital Health Disciplines

Scholarship Award in June.

The hospital recognised her

advocacy within interprofessional

collaborative practice and as

a champion of research and

scholarship on the outcomes of

team based health care.

Dr. Kopansky-Giles was recognised

by the Ontario Chiropractic

Association as Chiropractor of the

Year, the second time she has

received this honour.

CMCC proposal for funding at

St. Michael’s Hospital

The Government of Ontario

announced in October that

chiropractors had been added

to the list of professions to

participate in a lower back pain

pilot program within Family Health

Teams and nurse practitioner-led

clinics. Given that CMCC’s clinic at

St. Michael’s Hospital is integrated

within its Academic Family Health

Team, Drs. Kopansky-Giles, Silvano

Mior and Anthony Tibbles took this

opportunity to submit a proposal

to the Ministry of Health and

Long-Term Care for consideration

of funding for CMCC’s chiropractic

faculty within that clinical setting.

Influencing health care policy

Welcoming a new president

In September, The Board of

Governors announced that Dr. Jean

Moss had decided to step down

from her position as president

of CMCC. The announcement

prompted an international search

for an energetic leader to articulate

a compelling vision of academic

excellence, research and patient

care. After attracting a diverse

and highly qualified pool of

applicants, the search committee

commissioned by the Board in

collaboration with executive search

firm Feldman Daxon Inc. was able

to narrow the search to Dr. David

Wickes, a senior administrator

with over 25 years of experience

in strategic planning, budget

management, accreditation, union

contract negotiations and academic

advancement. Dr. Wickes officially

joined CMCC in July of 2014.

Outreach Abroad

For the sixth consecutive year, CMCC

organized an outreach program that

enables CMCC interns to work with

populations where many individuals

have had little to no exposure to

modern health care. This year a

team of eight CMCC interns and two

clinical faculty members travelled to

the Dominican Republic to provide

patient care in an underserved

area of that country. CMCC ‘s close

relationship with Dr. Ramon Lopez, a

senior health official in the country,

has also enabled the institution to

create an opportunity for World

Spine Care to develop one of its

clinics in the Dominican Republic for

consistent access to chiropractic care.

Reaching the community

Extended CMCC outreach earns

praise

CMCC’s clinical outreach for

the Toronto People With AIDS

Foundation’s (PWA) Friends for Life

Bike Rally earned praise from bike

riders, interns and organizations as

CMCC interns, led by clinician Dr.

Craig Jacobs joined the Wellness

team and offered riders treatment

on their long trek from Toronto to

Montreal. CMCC earned a Friends

of the Foundation Award for

Outstanding Corporate Support

of PWA. CMCC Registrar Chris

McGrath joined the ride as a cyclist

and fundraiser and collected over

$9,000 personally in donations.


University of Winnipeg articulation

agreement

CMCC announced a new academic

pathway for qualified students to

complete a Bachelor of Science,

Kinesiology degree and a Doctor of

Chiropractic degree in seven years

instead of eight. Dr. Lloyd Axworthy,

President and Vice-Chancellor, at the

University of Winnipeg noted that

“the pathway will provide students

the means to further their education

in less time so they can more quickly

take an active role in providing

excellent care to their communities.”

It is the first agreement of its kind

between CMCC and an institution

in western Canada and the second

such articulation agreement

between CMCC and a university

to facilitate a transition between

programs.

UOIT-CMCC research day

CMCC’s relationship with the

University of Ontario Institute of

Technology (UOIT) continues to

benefit the scientific community with

the first UOIT-CMCC Research Day

taking place on Tuesday, June 18,

2013 at CMCC. It included poster and

platform presentations and received

high praise from all in attendance,

surpassing their expectations by

providing a forum for knowledge

transfer and exchange among

scientists who study disability from

different perspectives.

New rehabilitation room at CMCC’s

clinic at Sherbourne

CMCC’s clinic at Sherbourne Health

Centre officially opened the doors

to a new rehabilitation room for

patients at the clinic in June, 2013.

Clinicians and interns at Sherbourne

Health Centre initiated the project

to repurpose extra space in the

waiting room and handled the

planning, budgeting and opening

of the new facility which plays

an important role within the

community.

Relocation of CMCC’s clinic at

St. John’s Rehab/Sunnybrook

Hospital

CMCC’s clinic at St. John’s Rehab at

Sunnybrook was welcomed into a

new, enhanced space following the

recent merger of St. John’s Rehab

into Sunnybrook Hospital. The new

clinic offers a brighter and more

effective therapeutic environment

for patients.

Enhanced human analog models

for the Simulation Laboratory

Following a trend of continuous

improvement and innovation

within the Simulation Laboratory,

Drs. John J. Triano, Dominic

Giuliano and David Starmer

undertook a project to develop

more durable and sophisticated

human analog manikins with the

addition of a neck and head that

can be moved to mimic the range

of motion of a healthy neck.

These manikins will be used in

conjunction with the Force Sensing

Table Technology (FSTT) as a

teaching tool for neck and spine

manipulations. FSTT measures the

force being applied to the spine

and provides real time feedback

to both the student and the

instructor.

Incorporating simulation

technology into the curriculum

The incorporation of Force

Sensing Table Technology into the

curriculum was part of a defined

strategy to promote improved

adjustment skills. The Simulation

Laboratory reported more than

2,600 visits by students for practice

purposes. In addition, this year's

Student Satisfaction Survey reflects

improvement in student confidence

when asked about their manual

adjusting skills.

E-record solution deployment

complete

CMCC completed the deployment

of its electronic health record

system in September, with the

transition to an Open Source

Clinical Application Resource

(aka OSCAR) e-record system. The

new system will improve care

coordination, increase efficiencies

and cost savings and improve the

quality of patient care through

standardized records among CMCC

Clinics.

E-learning initiatives adapt to

changing learning patterns

Upon completion of a pilot

project on e-learning conducted

by the Undergraduate Education

Program, CMCC found that there

is an opportunity to optimize

learning by offering select content

in the program through a hybrid

e-learning model that can, in

turn, reduce schedule density and

complexity.

Accordingly, the Dean of

Undergraduate Education has

created a three year plan,

beginning in 2014, to invest in

hybrid course development to suit

changing learning patterns and

optimize student and faculty time.

Continuing Education launches

CEconnect

In January 2014, CE launched a new

learning management system for

its programs. The new solution,

CEconnect, offers platform

independence, meaningful

analytics, online access to course

registration, payment, materials,

assessment and certificates of

completion, and opens the door to

international participants.

To date, in addition to those from

North America, visitors and CE

participants have come from

Australia, Ecuador, France, Belgium,

Brazil, Chile, India and Sweden.

Showcasing research

CMCC’s third biennial symposium

was held October 26 and focussed

on Women’s Health, Paediatrics

and Geriatrics. Experts and

scientists from throughout

North America lectured and

provided demonstrations and

presentations, engaging audiences

and introducing new concepts and

research.

Dr. Sam Howarth, the McMorland

Family Research Chair, discussed

his work on reflexive activity and

potential future work related to

the effect of high velocity low

amplitude adjustments on neural

control of spine posture and

movement.

Increasing accessibility to Work

Disability Prevention Program

A change to the classroom delivery

model of previous years, the Work

Disability Prevention Program is

now offered in a combination of

distance and on site sessions to better

accommodate students studying from

afar. By combining these methods

of course delivery, CMCC is able

to capitalize on a wider and more

diverse faculty expertise beyond that

of the Toronto-based campus.

Lifelong learning: online and on site

Remapping radiology

CMCC’s Graduate Studies Digital

Imaging program has been

remapped to reflect the latest

standards of practice and to align

with university Master’s programs.

This is part of the overarching

CMCC goal within the Graduate

Studies Program to bring CMCC’s

post-graduate studies into closer

alignment with national and

international university programs.

Rigorous clinical experience

This year, qualitative requirements

in clinic were increased in support

of CMCC’s Strategic Goals to renew

CMCC’s role as a leader in the

teaching and research of chiropractic

adjustments and manual care, and to

expand clinical experience. Students

in the Class of 2014 were required

to provide care to 38 new patients

(up from 35) and 380 subsequent

treatments (up from 350).

Expanding Graduate Studies

opportunities

The Graduate Studies Program

has also entered into an academic

affiliation agreement with Mt.

Sinai Hospital in Toronto to

provide a chiropractic resident

pilot placement with a patient

care component, rounds

Understanding the financial statements

terms, were proportionately

consistent with the prior year

with relatively higher costs

in other expenses5 (mainly in

software maintenance fees, library

subscriptions, building security/

cleaning) and professional services;

and, relatively lower costs for

salaries/benefits, building repairs

and maintenance, utilities usage and

interest and bank charges. The activity

levels reflect an active institution and

inflationary cost increases.

Continued prudent budget

management was exercised by all

divisions, recognizing the value for

money relationship to expenditures in

the delivery of world class services to

support patient focused chiropractic

education, research and health care.

A moment of reflection

CMCC’s financial operations and

position continues to be strong and

stable. The institution's continuing

success is the result of the strong

dedication, energy, and support of

faculty, staff, students, members,

donors and volunteers. These

remarkable individuals enthusiastically

help CMCC to realize its mission and

vision every day. CMCC continues

to have much to be proud of — a

remarkable and respected history and

an even brighter future.

A set of condensed financial

statements follows for the period

of June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014

which provide a reporting of CMCC’s

financial results. Following is a brief

description of each statement.

Condensed statement of financial

position

Describes the overall financial

position or health of the

organization. It itemizes assets

and liabilities including deferred

contributions and fund balances.

Highlights from this statement

include a strong cash position, a

diversified investment portfolio, and

a net worth of $29.8 million.

Condensed statement of operations

and changes in fund balances

States the sources of revenue and

expenses for the General, Restricted

and Endowment funds. This

statement identifies that an operating

excess of revenues over expenses of

$1.0 million was generated, stated as

the General Fund.

The fund balances reflect the

accumulated surpluses of the General,

Restricted and Endowment funds.

These represent the net worth

of each fund as reflected in the

Condensed Statement of Financial

Position. Fund balances are created

by the excess of revenues over

expenditures and inter-fund transfers.

The Restricted Funds from the Capital

Campaign were used to reduce the

loan and mortgage debt, and the

Governors’ Club funds were allocated

to the purchase of two force sensing

tables, which utilize the SIM Lab

technology, for students’ practical

technique education.

Condensed statement of cash flows

Describes sources and uses of cash

throughout the year. During the

2014 fiscal year, the major sources

of cash were generated from

operating activities, $3.3 million, and

proceeds from the Capital Campaign,

$188,489. Major uses of cash were

the repayment of debt, $1.4 million,

capital asset additions, $559,901,

and the purchase of investments,

$609,926.

Condensed schedule of continuity

of restricted funds

Describes a summary of the increase

in funds, investment income earned,

expenses and inter-fund transfers

of each one of the restricted funds.

CMCC’s restricted funds include the

Governors’ Club; Research; Capital

Campaign Building; and, Scholarship,

Bursary, and Other Trust funds.

The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic

College is once again proud of its

solid financial performance over the

past year. With continued attention

to prudent fiscal management, CMCC

completed the year ending May 31,

2014 with an excess of revenues over

expenditures in the General Fund of

$1,015,7401 and a strong cash position.

Prudent fiscal management

CMCC used the excess of revenues

over expenditures generated in 20142,

along with net Capital Campaign

proceeds, to support the repayment

of its long term debt. $1.4 million3

of the principal on the loan and

mortgage was repaid this past year.

Since incurring this long term debt in

2004, CMCC has reduced the principal

owing by an accumulated $17.3

million of the $22 million borrowed—

reflecting a rate of repayment that has

substantially exceeded expectations.

This accelerated debt repayment

is the result of prudent financial

management and continuing support

from donors over the years. The

benefits of this strategy continue to

strengthen CMCC’s sound financial

position by reducing the related

carrying charges. Since 2004, the

accelerated debt repayments have

reduced interest otherwise payable by

a total of over $578,000.

Net proceeds to the Capital Campaign

are committed to retiring loan

and mortgage debt related to the

construction of the 6100 Leslie

Street campus. In 2014, campaign

contributions grew by $188,4894 and

total pledges toward the campaign

stand at over $19.7 million.

Investments of $5.57 million (fair

valued as at May 31, 2014), are

composed of restricted funds and

an internal general purpose fund

which receives quarterly additions.

The investment fund performed

well over the past fiscal period with

the improved market conditions.

Investments are governed by a

Board approved policy wherein a risk

balanced strategy is professionally

managed to the objectives of

preserving the capital’s purchasing

power, providing appropriate liquidity

and generating long term capital

growth. During this past fiscal year,

the fourth year of the established

McMorland Family Research Chair

in Mechanobiology which focuses

on spine instability, degeneration

and joint dysfunction/subluxation,

$404,759 in donations were received.

Together with the founding donation

of $500,000 from Mrs. Barbara

McMorland, $1.9 million has been

pledged toward CMCC’s goal of $3.5

million to fully fund this dynamic

research initiative to improve patients’

health and well being.

Revenue and expense flows

The Doctor of Chiropractic program

represents CMCC's largest offering,

and thus it is no surprise that student

and tuition fees continue to reflect

the largest source of revenue. During

the past fiscal year, this category

represented 74.7% (75.2% last year) of

the overall gross operating revenue,5,6

with a full student complement.

Research activities continued robustly

on new grants and those previously

awarded.

Diversification of revenue streams

continues to be a CMCC priority. The

institution experienced relatively higher

non-tuition based revenue from the

contributions of continuing education

fees, investment income, donations,

research activities, special events

and parking fees while experiencing

relatively lower non-tuition based

revenue from membership fees.
