AN INVITATION TO WORSHIPWelcome visitors! We invite you to sign the ritual of friendship pad during the service. Please complete a visitor card, found in the pews, and take it to the welcome desk in the Welcoming Hall, where we have a small gift for you. Informational brochures are available in the Welcoming Hall. If you’re interested in becoming a part of our community, please check the appropriate column on the ritual of friendship pad, or contact any pastor. Again, a deep WELCOME!

Worship Aids: Large-print bulletins, Bibles, and hymnals are available from the ushers. Braille hymnals and ASL interpreters are available with one week’s advance notice to the church office, 271-1050, ext. 103. A hearing loop in the sanctuary is available for those who have hearing aids with T switches; you may also request earphones from the ushers that will aid you in hearing the service if needed. CDs of our Sunday morning services or just the sermon may be borrowed or purchased; call or stop by the office and speak with the receptionist during the week.

Prayer Request Cards are in the pew racks. We invite you to place prayer requests in the offering plates, so that our pastors and the Intercessory Prayer Group may pray for you. Your prayer request is confidential.

Coffee Fellowship: You are invited to enjoy coffee, tea, or cocoa and conversation every Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Heavenly Grounds in the Gathering Center. Treats may also be available.

Giving to Asbury First: Donations to Asbury First may be made during the service by placing your gift (cash or check) in the offering plate when it is passed. You may also give online at www.asburyfirst.org. If you are interested in Electronic Fund Transfer, contact Richard Moncrief at (585) 271-1050 x108 or [email protected].

As a community of faith, we believe that children are sacred gifts and they are welcome in our worship. We recognize that children can become restless during worship. Excellent nursery and childcare is offered. Children’s bulletins are available. Please see an usher for more information.

After the service we welcome you to sit in the chancel choir pews to meditate and listen to the organ postlude.

We kindly ask that as you enter the Sanctuary you turn off your cell phone.

Worship on Radio – Each Sunday morning from 11:00 a.m.-noon you can tune your radio to WYSL 1040 AM or 92.1 FM to hear today’s worship service. You may also go to www.WYSL1040.com and hear audio of the service.

LIVE & Archived Worship on your Computer: We offer live video streaming of the 11:00 a.m. service on our website at www.asburyfirst.org. A video archive of past services is also available. We welcome your suggestions on how we may improve these offerings.

Reconciliation Statement: Asbury First United Methodist Church prayerfully strives to live in its community with open hearts, open minds and open doors. Affirming that each person is of sacred worth, we seek to be a fully inclusive church, believing that all people are God’s children, created in God’s image, loved and blessed equally by God. It is our purpose to be a Reconciling Congregation. This means extending hospitality and encouraging full participation of all, regardless of age, race, national origin, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, marital status or family structure, education or economic back-ground and physical or mental ability. We recognize that we hold a variety of opinions. We do not seek to erase our differences, but to journey together in faith toward greater understanding and mutual respect. We believe that reconciliation to God and to one another is central to our mission and ministry.

Call to Prayer

Pastoral Prayer

Invitation to Discipleship,

Membership, and Commitment

As he taught, he said, ‘Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.’ He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.’

“Jesu, the Very Thought of Thee” — Edward BairstowJesu, the very thought of thee with sweetness fills my breast; but sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest. –Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153); trans. Edward Caswall

(The children are invited to bring their prayer requests and offerings at this time.)

our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our tres-passes, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. #420 “Breathe on Me, Breath of God” During the singing of this hymn, children four years old through fifth grade are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Enrichment Time.

Pledging for a bright Future for AFumCAs we dream of a bold, vibrant future for Asbury First, please help make that dream come true by pledging to our 2016 annual budget. Increasing your pledge by just five percent will help to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, provide support for members in times of need, and bring inspiring worship to us all. On Sunday, November 22, we will place all the pledges received on our altar, consecrating them to God. Here’s three easy ways for you to pledge:• You’ll find pledge cards in the red ritual of friend-

ship folders in each pew. Fill one out and drop it in the offering plate.

• Fill out our secure online pledge form, at www.asburyfirst.org.

• mail your pledge card (you’ll find cards in the last three issues of The Visitor newsletter) to us at 1050 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14607. Attn: Dick Moncrief.

Thanksgiving In-Gathering Sunday, November 22Each year we gather on the Sunday before Thanksgiving to give thanks for all that God has given us, and to pass on our gratitude in the form of items to support our outreach ministries – something we call our “Thanks-giving In-Gathering.” You are invited to review the list of needed items below, and join with others in bringing a gift of whatever items you wish to services on Novem-ber 22. That day, at the offertory, we will bring forward our gifts and present them at the altar. This year, our ministries are in need of the following:• For the Dining and Caring Center: adult hats,

gloves and scarves, coffee, sugar, grits, and toilet paper.

• For the Storehouse: children’s gloves and mittens.• For the Grocery Bag Ministry: canned fruit and

vegetables, canned soup, peanut butter, jams, jellies, canned tuna, pasta, and pasta sauce.

Pumpkin Patch GratitudeMany thanks to all of you who helped support our pumpkin patch this year both by purchasing pumpkins, as well as to the youth and adults who worked at the patch. With your help we raised just over $1,900 to put towards our youth missions. Great job!

Welcoming Name Tag Initiative We invite you to join in our new name tag initiative. Name tags allow us to be more welcoming to guests and first-time visitors, as well as helping us all to get to know each other a bit better. To request your name tag, stop by the name tag desk in the Welcoming Hall and fill out a name tag request form. Your name tag(s) will be ready to be picked up in two weeks. We also have an online form on the website (www.asburyfirst.org – you’ll find the form under the “About Us” menu). Thank you for helping us to become as welcoming as possible to all.

Sanctuary Open for Silent PrayerIn response to the requests of several members of our community, we will be opening the sanctuary for silent prayer every Monday from noon-1:00 p.m. and Tuesday evening, 5:00-7:00 p.m. This will be an opportunity for you to spend some quiet time in prayerful reflection. The Psalmist tells us to “Be still and know that I am God.” We hope you will take advantage of this oppor-tunity to answer this invitation and re-connect with the still voice of God.

Save the Date for an Advent RetreatSaturday, December 59:30 a.m.-noon1010 East Avenue (the red brick building west of the church) Our theme will be “Advent is God’s Dream For the World Coming True in Jesus!” Please mark your cal-endars for this Advent workshop: an opportunity for dreaming, remembering, rejoicing, and anticipating. All are welcome; please bring a friend, a neighbor, a guest. There is no charge, but registration with the church office is requested. Please contact Melody Guadagnino (585) 271-1050 x 103. book Fair to Support Asbury First LibraryAs you start to think of shopping for Christmas, please consider buying your gifts on November 30 at Barnes & Noble in Pittsford. The Asbury First Resource Library is holding a book fair there that day; a portion of the sale price of nearly anything you buy then will enable the library to buy new books. Simply tell the store clerk our book fair number (11717592) and they’ll credit your sale to our library. Even food and drink in the café are included. To make the event more enjoyable, we will once again be hosting the Asbury Ringers at 7:00 p.m., as well as celebrity storytelling for children at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. New this year will be a presentation on therapy dogs, most likely in the after school hours. Look for an updated schedule in the weekly bulletin and Asbury’s weekly e-newsletter. If you are unable to attend on that day, you can still help by shopping at any Barnes and Noble store on Nov. 30 and presenting our book fair number (11717592), or shopping online at BN.com/bookfairs Dec. 1-5 and entering the number on the checkout page. For questions, please contact Di-ana Carter at (585) 732-7224 or [email protected].

FELLOWSHIP OPPORTuNITIESLet’s Go Orange!Once again this year we are planning a college hoops road trip to Syracuse! Last year, this event sold out fast, so check your calendars now and plan on joining us. The details: SU vs. Georgia Tech at noon on Saturday, January 30. The chartered bus will depart from the Asbury First parking lot at 9:30 a.m. and will return at approximately 4:15 p.m. We have 55 tickets in the 300 level – 40 adults and 15 youth. The total cost is $53 for adults and $33 for youth 12 and under. This includes transportation and game ticket. Our crew had a fabu-lous time last trip and it was a fun inter-generational event. The orange-clad fans on the bus and fellowship with new and old Asbury First friends was a treat! Once again, Craig Dennison will lead a fun, SU-related trivia

contest on the bus. To reserve your seat today, contact Melody Guadagnino in the church office at (585) 271-1050 x103 or [email protected]. This trip would make a great Christmas gift or family event. We hope you can join us!

Fall Campus Clean-upSaturday, November 218:30-12:00 p.m.Would you like to get some exercise, commune with na-ture, and help your church, all at the same time? You’re invited to join us for a few hours on November 21 as we prepare our beautiful campus for the winter to come. We’ll be raking leaves, mulching flower beds, and doing other tasks to ensure that our plantings and lawn sur-vive the winter in fine shape. Bring your favorite tools – we’ll supply the coffee! We hope to see you there!

OuTREACH OPPORTuNITIESGrocery bag ministry NewsIt has been said that one can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving. In 2 Corinthians, Paul used the Macedonian Christians as an example to chal-lenge the generosity of the churches in Corinth. “I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with earnestness of others ... and here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter ... For if the willingness is there, the gift is accept-able according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.” The Grocery Bag Ministry will be filling 75 bags of food for delivery on November 21. If possible we would like to increase that number to 100. Thanksgiving is the following week. Our needs continue to be: canned goods such as soups, fruits and vegetables, tuna, peanut butter, jam, pasta and sauce, and boxed macaroni and cheese. A receptacle is available in the Welcoming Hall for your donations. Financial contri-butions are also welcomed through the .church office. Thank You. –Bill Lisi.

Humanity, of which Asbury First is a member. We are holding a delicious fundraiser: Holiday Pies for Habitat. Apple Crumb, Apple Raspberry, Pumpkin, Apple Crisp and Christmas Crumb pies are available. These pies are made from scratch by Kelly’s Farm Market in Hilton NY with fruit grown on their farm. Prices range from $12-16 for deep 10 inch homemade fruit pies weigh-ing about 4.5 pounds. See us in the Welcoming Hall to order yours. Delivery is November 24 after 1:00 p.m. in the Welcoming Hall.

Christmas For Storehouse KidsThe annual Storehouse toy drive is nearly upon us! Dates for toy collection are Sundays, November 29, December 6 and December 13. Suggestions for gifts for the children who visit the Storehouse prior to Christ-mas are as follows: infant and preschool learning toys; young girls’ and boys’ games, dolls, trucks and cars; for preteen and teen girls, nail polish, eye shadow and other assorted make up, new pj’s and games and books appropriate for teens; for preteen and teen boys, games, books, sports equipment and pj’s as well. We are grate-ful to the Asbury First community for supporting our annual toy drive. It is a joy to be able to place a gift for each child in the hands of a parent; sometimes the only gift the child will receive. We ask that toys be new or gently used. We will be in the Welcoming Hall to greet and thank you on the Sunday in November and the two Sundays in December.

EDuCATIONAL OPPORTuNITIESSunday School classes are open to all – we invite you to try one out! We invite the classes to submit their weekly topics for inclusion in the bulletin to Mary Van Keuren at [email protected] by Tuesday of each week. Thank you!
