Hector Tercero

A 2016 graduate recently obtained a job at the University

of Southern California (USC) as a Culinary Specialist

(chef). It is a dream job for him and he credits Eastside LC

(East LA Skills) for assist-

ing him in earning a high

school diploma, as one of

the major requirements to

qualify for the job, and

making it possible to

achieve a lifelong

dream. He said this is the

first time he has ever had a

job that included a Benefits

package - and what a

package it is!

Congratulations Hector!

Liliana Maldonado completed her Cosmetology program

in Ms. Mercado’s class at East LA Skills Center in 2016.

She continued to further her education by taking the Bar-

ber cross over program at AFOC. Now, she has her Cos-

metology and Barbering state licenses and is extremely

happy and

thankful for the

training Ms.

Mercado pro-

vided her. She

is looking for-

ward to open-

ing her salon.

Congratulations

Liliana!

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

May is the National Physical Fitness and Sports month to raises awareness about benefits of physical activities as follows:

Children and adolescents-Can improve muscular fitness,

bone health, and heart.

Adults-Can lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes,

and some type of cancer.

Older adults-Can lower the risk of falls and improve cogni-

tive functioning (like learning and judge skills).

These are some suggested activities:

Encourage families to make small changes, like taking a walk

after dinner or going for a bike ride.

Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activi-

ty a part of every student’s day.

Identify youth leaders in the community who can talk to their

peers about the importance of being active.

Jewish American Heritage Month

In April 2006, President George W. Bush announced that May

would be considered Jewish American Heritage Month. The

president wanted to proclaim a month that would recognize the

more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to America

and the American culture.

ESL Professional Learning Communities (PLC) Meeting

The ESL Beginning Low teachers participated in a PLC meeting held on Monday, May 15, 2017. The teach-

ers shared their findings after implementing the Common Formative Assessment in their classrooms and col-

laborated to modify the assessment tool to improve student outcomes. The culmination meeting is scheduled

Powerline Class Participation at Los Angeles DWP Lineman’s Rodeo

On April 29th Mr. Estrada’s Powerline class volunteered at the 2017 Los Angeles Department of Water & Power Lineman’s

Rodeo. 35 teams of Linemen from all over the nation came to participate in the 26th anniversary of the LADWP Lineman Ro-

deo. Mr. Estrada’s students were on hand that day to help with set up of the 5 events scheduled for power journeyman level

linemen events and apprentice linemen to participate. There were also 58 vendors in which our linemen students help set up.

On Wednesday May 17th the students were honored by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for the hard work

that they put forth during the Rodeo challenge. The LADWP showed their appreciation by treating students to a catered lunch

and were awarded certificates and a trophy by the Superintendent of the LADWP training facility. He remarked that the event

would not be made possible without the hard work of the East Los Angeles Skills Center Powerline students volunteering.

Monterey Adult School Visitation

Friday, May 19th, the Instructional Leadership Team from Monterey Peninsula Unified School District’s Adult School

visited East LA Skills Center. They were interested in seeing our CTE, ESL and Academic classes. They wanted to

learn about our registration and testing procedures and gather information on the ways they could improve their adult

school to better serve the community of the Monterey Peninsula.

They were so thankful for the visit as it “Truly opened our eyes to the endless possibilities that are out there in so many

programs: ESL, HSD/GED, Career Pathways, Para Los Niños. We are so grateful and so appreciative to have ob-

served all that you showed us.” stated Dan Cutler, ESL Coordinator/Academic Coach.

They left feeling inspired and encouraged that the Monterey Adult School will also be able to begin with some of the

programs both East LA Skills Center and West Valley Occupational Center are providing.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Congratulations to our principal, Andrea Rodriguez, for being selected the Administrator of the year for the Division of Adult

and Career Education by the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles.
