This year was our 7 th Year of the competition and out of 16 schools invited to enter the comp we had eight schools who participated with a total of 25 entries. The evening was well attended with over 50 who attended the evening including special guests Councillor Greg Burnett representing The Hills Shire Council, ADG Mark Anderson, principals, assistant principals, teachers, students, Rotarians and their partners. My thanks go to PP Gordan Scoble with his assistant wife Robyn, for the mammoth task of adjudicating and selecting the prize winners. The talent of creative writing in our local schools is indeed of the highest standard and we look forward to next year‟s competition. On Saturday we held our normal Dan Murphy‟s Barbeque and also we held a second BBQ at The Powerhouse Museum‟s Open Day at Castle Hill. Although it was a slow start at the museum, business picked up and we ended up with a sell out which was a wonderful achievement with PP Jim Sifonios doing two shop runs for more supplies. I‟d like to thank PP Jim Sifonios, PP Alan Jones, PP Keith Stapley and Paul Haslam who manned the BBQ at the Museum and also to PP Wilf Van Emmerik and PP Alex Trail who ran the BBQ at Dan Murphy‟s. Tonight we welcome Dr. Malcolm Glase to talk about minimally invasive hip surgery. Toast to Overseas Rotary Club

o The Narayanganj Rotary Club in Bangladesh has 25 members and meets Monday nights at 7pm at the Narayanganj Club.

Narayanganj is situated on the banks of the Shitalakshya River and is near the capital city of Dhaka.

The club is involved in many projects – two of which they have reported on recently include a wheelchair distribution program, and a tree planting ceremony that they organized at the Al-haj Amizuddin Rotary Orphanage. The Club members of this Club send greetings to our Club Members.

Rotary Foundation - Bringing smiles to those in need. Mother Theresa said "Peace Begins with a Smile" Rotarians around the world put that into action everyday. An example of this is a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant that helped the Rotary Clubs of North Sydney and St Ives and Rotary Clubs in District 3150 to provide 182 milch cows to villagers in India. North Sydney contributed US$19,600 and Chilakaluripet in D3150 gave $7,067. With the match from The Rotary Foundation of $13,333 and a total budget of $40,000 they bought 100 cattle. The second Matching Grant saw the Rotary Club of St Ives $5,800 combine with RC Berri SA $6,120 and Parchur India $5,947 and the District Designated Fund of D9680 US$3,000 gained the match from The Rotary Foundation of $11,933 for $32,800 to buy 82 milking cows. As the song goes „from little things big things grow‟ and this type of matching grant exemplifies the current world president‟s Rotary Theme “Reach Within and Embrace Humanity” D9680 has over $22,000 in District Designated Funds to contribute to Club Matching Grants in 2011-12.

How did it all begin?

Some 30 years ago an American Plastic Surgeon, Dr Don Laub, went to Mexico for a holiday. Whilst there, he was asked to have a look at a child with a cleft lip. Dr Laub was so moved by the fact that this child was being brought up in a chook house because his parents were ashamed of his appearance, he took the child back to Stanford University and operated to repair the cleft lip. When the child was returned to his home some weeks later, Dr Laub was surprised to find there were many, many more children suffering the same condition because plastic surgeons were not available. He gathered together volunteer surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses and established Interplast America which then provided programs to this part of the world and, eventually, into South America. It was on a program to Central America, a plastic surgeon from Melbourne, Mr Leo Rozner joined the team. On his return he spoke at the Cheltenham Rotary Club on his experience as a member of the American Interplast team to Central America. Amongst the membership present was Dr Gerald Duff, a General Practitioner who was impressed by the presentation. Dr Duff spoke to Rotary District 980 (now 9800), District Governor Doug Mills about what he had heard and suggested this was something he thought Rotary in Australia could be interested in and assist with. Mr Mills suggested he talk with Mr Keith Walter who was the Chairman of Rotary District 980 International Committee. In August 1982, direct contact was made with the USA and included a meeting with Keith Walter and the Interplast America Board at Palo Alto where USA embraced the concept of an "Interplast Australia". This linkage gradually moved to Prof Donald Marshall who was Chairman of the Plastic and Reconstructive Division of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons at the time and consequently Interplast Australia, a non profit company (inc Vic) was founded in 1983 as a partnership between the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Rotary District 980. Interplast Australia was established to provide voluntary medical teams to carry out plastic and reconstructive surgery in developing countries. Programs are actively supported by Rotary Districts and Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand. Rotarians are Members of the Company, the Board and the Interplast Committee of Rotarians. The first Interplast Australia program was conducted to Samoa in 1983, fully funded by Rotarians. The next program, funded by Rotarians, was to Fiji and it was there the Australian Government recognised the importance of such a worthwhile foreign aid program. This resulted in partial funding being allocated for Interplast programs through the Pacific Islands. With further assistance from Rotary Clubs and Districts Australia-wide, along with growing corporate support, Interplast programs today extend to Bangladesh, China, Cook Islands, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Laos, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Vietnam. The types of operations performed by volunteers has increased and changed over the years to cope with the needs of the community they serve and they now perform many more surgeries than just cleft lip and palate. In 2007 the name of the organisation was changed from Interplast Australia to Interplast Australia and New Zealand to recognise the collaboration with New Zealand volunteers and harness future support. Interplast is very grateful to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for providing office space free of charge to assist in minimising administration expenses. This, with the voluntary contribution of surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses enables Interplast to provide a cost effective humanitarian program. Over the 25 years Interplast has

Trained hundreds of overseas surgeons, anesthetists, nurses and allied therapists and

Sponsored over 70 to continue their training in Australia.

Sent nearly 600 volunteers, on

Nearly 500 programs, in 24 countries.

Provided over 30,000 consultations, and

Performed over 18,000 instantly life changing operations.

Interplast is an incredible success story of humanitarian and development work that can be achieved by Australian and New Zealand volunteers.

Joke of the Day - Women Think of everything

An old man and woman were married for many years, even though they hated each other. Whenever there was a confrontation, yelling could be heard deep into the night. The old man would shout, 'When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!' Neighbors feared him. They believed he practiced magic, because of the many strange occurrences that took place in their neighborhood. The old man liked the fact that he was feared. --- To everyone's relief, he died of a heart attack when he was 98. His wife had a closed casket at the wake. After the burial, she went straight to the local bar and began to party, as if there was no tomorrow. Her neighbors, concerned for her safety, asked, 'Aren't you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way out of the grave and haunt you for the rest of your life?' The wife put down her drink and said, 'Let him dig. I had him buried upside down.' And you know men won't ask for directions...
