In Nigeria, one of every 18 women dies as a result of childbirth. Rotarians in Nigeria are looking to expand a program that has helped reduce maternal deaths by 60 percent by preventing and treating obstetric fistula.

Oakhill College 2012 Gala Day

Rotary Showcase and Membership Drive

On the 21st July, The Rotary Clubs of The Hil ls -Kellyvi l le, Norwest Sunrise and Winston Hills combined forces to showcase some of the work in which the local Rotary Clubs are involved, at the Oakhil l College 2012 Gala Day. The event is held annually and the Rotary Display Stand was one of the many attract ions of the day. Although the school reported that numbers were down this year, the Rotarians who helped out on the day were extremely satisf ied with the level of interest shown by visitors to the Rotary stand. It was a great opportunity to talk about the work of

Hello Everyone, From the feedback I received, everyone seemed to agree that last week’s Member’s night was a very successful night . The Paul Harris video was an interesting insight into the early days of Rotary and the old footage was both interest ing and ente rtaining. There is no doubt that the highlight of the night was the wine tasting / judging, and I'd once more like to thank Michael Griscti was supplying the wine. The event has set a standard that we will be striving to match at each Member's night thr oughout the year, so if anyone has any ideas that they would like to suggest for future Members’ nights talk to me or someone from the Board and we will work with them. On Monday we can look forward to an interesting presentation from Claire Thompson (our Club sponsored representative on the outgoing GSE Team) and Mark Wallace (GSE Team Leader). Mark and Claire will be reporting back on their adventures and experiences whilst on the Group Study Exchange in England. Anyone who followed their Facebook page during their tr ip will know that they have a myriad of highlights to talk about and photos to share. If any of you would like to invite your partners along for the night, they would (as always) be more than welcome and this seems like i t may be a presentation that everyone would enjoy. If your partners are planning to attend, would you please let me know (in Alan’s absence) so that we can warn the Tavern to expect higher numbers than usual. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Weekly Toast - Overseas Club

This week we would like to toast the Rotary Club of London – District 1130. The Rotary Club of London, Club No. 50 in Rotary International, is the premier Rotary Club in Britain, being the f irst to have been chartered outside North America and the club is One Hundred Years young and Counting.

T h e R o t a r y C l u b o f L o n d o n The Rotary Club of London, Club No. 50 in Rotary International, is the premier Rotary Club in Britain, being the first to have been chartered outside North America. London is one of four Clubs in Britain and Ireland to be founded in 1911 - the others being Dublin (who actually were the first to convene a meeting but took longer to be chartered), Manchester and Belfast. The current Rotary year (2011-2012) is our centenary year, and therefore also the centenary of Rotary in Europe. The London Club is unique in that it covers the whole of the capital, yet is only one of 70 in District 1130 (Rotary in London), which represents all Rotary Clubs in the Greater London region. The Club maintains close relations with the District, and with other Clubs in the District. Our current Hon. Secretary, Clive Amos, is a past district governor.

The London Club combines experience with youthful enterprise. Our present No. 1 Member, Albert Kunz, was inducted in 1952, and around 20 new Members are currently joining the Club each year. Our membership includes politicians from all major parties, numerous Ambassadors and High Commissioners, religious leaders from various faiths, and leading figures from the arts, industry, commerce and the professions. The Rotary Club of London is a Member of the R5 Group of European Capital City Clubs alongside The Hague, Brussels, Paris and Luxembourg. The Club plays an active part in supporting the object of Rotary, which is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: 1. the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. high ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; and 4. the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Although the Club draws its membership from the whole of the capital, its constitutional home territory is the City of London and Holborn, and the Club maintains close relations with the worlds of finance and the law. As a Member of the Leonardo Association of European Rotary Clubs which supports rising stars in the worlds of science, arts and crafts, the London Club hosted the 2005 ceremony at the historic Goldsmiths Hall in the City of London when the annual Leonardo da Vinci Prize was awarded to Danish silversmith Sidsel Dorph-Jensen, and held a gala dinner in the Great Hall at Lincoln’s Inn. The London Club is very involved with community projects, including support for Oak Lodge School for profoundly deaf children in Balham; St George’s School in West London; and children’s hospices and hospitals in the region. Because of its international membership and frequent visits by Rotarians from all over the world, the London Club has a particular focus on international charity projects and on promoting international dialogue and understanding. Two events in the Club’s annual fundraising calendar, the Charity Golf Day and the International Gala Dinner, deliver five-figure support for children’s charities in Asia, Africa and elsewhere. Active Club Member Sir Sigmund Sternberg, famed for his unstinting efforts to build bridges between Christianity, Judaism and Islam, was included alongside Sir Winston Churchill and President John F. Kennedy in Rotary International’s Centennial List of 100 noted Rotarians.

This week we will look at the Rotary Clubs of NSW 2012 Police Officer of the year awards and how we can nominate an officer from our LAC, Castle Hill. I have number of officers who attended my home to render support to my family. I will be looking to nominate an officer and I would encourage that if anyone has an officer or a civilian employee of the Police force that they may wish to nominate for this award to contact me. National Skills Week is on next month, unfortunately it clashes with our club meeting night. If anyone of our members are going to be in the city, then they may wish to register their interest to attend.

AWARD CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS (Main Award) NSW Rotary Police Officer of the Year The NSW Rotary Police Officer of the Year is decided from the winners of the two main award categories: Field Operations Local Area Command Police Officer of the Year and Specialist Operations / Corporate Services Non Local Area Command Police Officer of the Year. This is the premier award of the night.

1) Field Operations Local Area Command Police Officer of the Year This award is to recognise the outstanding contribution of officers attached to local area commands, which include general duties, criminal investigators and other officers who operate in the local area command environment.

2) Specialist Operations / Corporate Services Non Local Area Command Police Officer of the Year This award is to recognise the outstanding contribution of officers attached to Specialist Operations and Corporate Services commands, which includes technical officers, criminal investigators and other specialist officers who operate in the non local area command environment.

3) Rotary Community Award This award is to recognise the efforts of NSW Police Force employees, both sworn and unsworn, whose work has been specially identified as providing benefits to the community directly through a program or other initiative.

4) The Rotary Clubs of NSW Volunteer in Policing Volunteer of the Year Award This award is to recognise the outstanding efforts of the NSW Police Force Volunteers in Policing Program. These volunteers assist the Force in their own time and help ensure the community of New South Wales is best served by their police.

5) NSW Rotary Police Employee of the Year This award is to recognise the outstanding contribution of NSW Police Force civilian employees and reflects the crucial supporting role they play in the daily business of policing.
