If eligible, students will be notified on Friday, January 27th . If your student has at least a 3.7 GPA, he/she is eligible. COLD WEATHER OUTWEAR – Students will be allowed to wear coats, hats, scarves,
etc., but must put any item that’s not solid burgundy in their lockers once released from
the auditorium. Burgundy sweatshirts and sweaters can be purchased at Academic
Outfitters.
*Long sleeve undergarments may be worn. (Solid colors: white, blue, black, grey,
burgundy)

Before being dismissed to first period, ALL students MUST be in their assigned areas.
6th grade students report to the AUDITORIUM. No students are allowed to be in the
hallways, classrooms, or restrooms WITHOUT PERMISSION.
Locker times: Morning—after being dismissed from the auditorium, before & after lunch,
between 4th/9th and 5th/10th period.

SCIENCE FAIR UPDATE
Congratulations again to all our students for their hard work on their independent investigations and BCMAR Science Fair participation. Houston ISD will not be holding a District Science Fair this year. Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to participate in the city Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (https://sefhouston.org/fair-announcement). SEFH occurs at the University of Houston on February 24th (set up posters), 25th (competition), and 26th Sunday (awards). First – Third place individual winners and First – Second place team winners are automatically accepted provided all registration requirements are met through Scienteer. Additional individuals and teams who placed honorable mention – 4th place will be invited through teacher nominations. Parents and students will be notified of those nominations on January 13th. The opportunity for parents to nominate their child will open up on Tuesday, January 17th if space is available.
A science fair meeting to prepare your student for participation will be held Tuesday January 17th at 4:15 pm in the STEM Station at BCMA at Ryan. After school tutorials/coaching/mentoring will be offered on Mondays, in the STEM Station for students (parents are welcome) from 4:15 – 5:15 beginning January 30th. ALEKS (Continuous individualized topics on math program): Students have approximately one hour in class

All quiz and tests are done on the ALEKS program in class. Every student is given the opportunity to look at
worked examples during a quiz and a chance to make corrections at least once on ALL quizzes and tests during

Students will explore the theme of heroism through the reading of selections of poetry and pairing the text examples with a class novel. Students will analyze how authors communicate theme and purpose in addition to responding to open-ended questions. Students will continue to strengthen their comprehension skills and analyze how authors develop cultural and historical relevance and convey theme through the use of figurative language, dramatic conventions, and fictional elements. Students will explain how figurative language (e.g., personification, metaphors, similes, hyperbole) contributes to the meaning of a poem, and analyze the importance of graphical elements (e.g., capital letters, line length, word position, figurative language, syntax) on the meaning of a poem.

Concepts
In this unit (Motor Highways) it important for students to be able to understand:
1) Neurons have special parts that important for sending and receiving messages/signals.
2) Each neuron transmits messages along tail-like branches known as axons.
3) Messages are received on the cell body and on tree-like branches known as dendrites.
4) Neurons are microscopic but dendrites & axons (known as nerve fibers) can be very long.
Activities
1) Independent Review: Students will take notes on sensory neurons, reflexes, and voluntary movements
2) Group Activity: Students will create a 3D model of a neuron
3) Independent Practice: Students will explore the patellar reflex as they learn about motor responses in
the spinal cord
