This week in Neuroscience w/Ms. Torres & Ms. Brown
[email protected] [email protected]
Concepts
In this unit (Motor Highways) it important for students to be able to understand:
1) Neurons have special parts that important for sending and receiving messages/signals.
2) Each neuron transmits messages along tail-like branches known as axons.
3) Messages are received on the cell body and on tree-like branches known as dendrites.
4) Neurons are microscopic but dendrites & axons (known as nerve fibers) can be very long.
Activities
1) Independent Review: Students will take notes on sensory neurons, reflexes, and voluntary movements
2) Group Activity: Students will create a 3D model of a neuron
3) Independent Practice: Students will explore the patellar reflex as they learn about motor responses in
the spinal cord
4) Group Discussion: Students will learn about reflexes as they investigate the effects of bright light on
pupil size
5) Worksheet(s): Make A Neuron, Eye Openers, Real Knee Jerkers, Reflex Reactions
6) Literature Circles: Trouble at Tsavo’s Reading: Chapters 4-6
Reminders/Comments:
o Parents, please check Parent Connect to remain up-to-date with student progress.
o Please sign up for Remind.com if you have not already done so already by using:

Dr. Williams will be out of class beginning on the 18th and will return January 26th. Students will be given in-
class assignments to complete and return to the substitute teacher at the end of each class.
Lesson 6 Take a Walk
Concepts
1) Well-learned voluntary movements can be carried out almost without thinking about them.
2) Programs for well-learned voluntary movements are stored in the cerebellum.
Activities
Students will compare and contrast well-learned voluntary movements with new ones.
Academic Practice: ALWAYS refer to your daily agenda in your neuroscience binders for assignment
instructions and due dates.
