TRANSCRIPT
On Tuesday the 26th of May 2015, we went on our way to see the first activity which was the
High Court of Australia. At the high court we went inside each court and learnt about what
was in each one and who uses it. After the high court we went to the best science place in Can-
berra which was Questacon. I had a scientific time at Questacon because we got to go around
by our self and do whatever we wanted to do. Then we went to the national art gallery.
On Wednesday the 27th of May 2015,the first thing we did was we walked up the Anzac pa-
rade and then we went to the war memorial where we got to put a poppy on a solider that we
were most interested in. We also went to the new parliament house and the Dinosaur Museum.
That was probably the most interactive day of them all…... Continued on page 2

PARLIAMENT AND CIVICS
EDUCATION REBATE
Students from our school recently un-
dertook an educational tour of the na-
tional capital. Students were given the
opportunity to participate in a variety of
educational programs with a focus on
Australia’s history, culture, heritage and
democracy.
The Australian Government recognises
the importance of all young Australians
being able to visit the national capital as
part of their Civics and Citizenship edu-
cation. To assist families in meeting the
cost of the excursion the Australian
Government contributed funding of $20
per student under the Parliament and
Civics Education Rebate program to-
wards those costs. The rebate is paid to
the school on completion of the excur-
sion. The school deducted this amount
from the cost of the excursion billed to
parents.
Yr 5/6 Canberra Excursion
On Tuesday 26th May-Friday 29th May Year 5/6 went on an excursion to Canberra. It was a long bus drive up but when we got there
on Tuesday we went to High court of Australia, Questacon where we had so much fun, then the National Gallery of Australia and
later Ten pin Bowling.
On Wednesday we went on the Anzac Parade Walk we walked the loop and finished at the War Memorial, where we placed a poppy
next to the soldier’s name that we have been researching. My soldier’s name was on panel 15, right hand side,
fifth from the top (Whittle W. A.). Then we went to Parliament House it looked amazing. After that we went to
the National Dinosaur Museum.
On Thursday we visited The National Capital Exhibition, Old Parliament House, Electoral Education Centre, Mu-
seum of Australian Democracy, The National Film and Sound Archives and later the Australian Institute of Sport.
On Friday we went to The National Museum of Australia and CSIRO then the long bus trip home.
Our Canberra excursion was awesome I had so much fun, learnt a lot and made some new friends. The food was
ok, some days it was good others it wasn’t so good. In my dorm there was me, Charlotte S, Jasmine M, Caitlyn S,
Zoe N, Abbey M and Paris H.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2016
Kindergarten enrolments are now due. We need to work out our class numbers as we may need to obtain an addi-
tional classroom for next year. If you have a child due to start school at Lindsay Park next year please pick up an
enrolment form from the school office, fill it in and return it as soon as possible. We appreciate your co-operation
in this matter. Thank you, Robert Cusack
Mr Brodie teaching 3/4M & 3/4D
about Indigenous Culture.
Last Thursday 3/4D and 3/4M were privileged to
have Mr Brodie visit and talk to us about indige-
nous culture, language, food, music, ceremonies,
hunting, weapons and celebrations. He showed us
some Aboriginal artefacts and talked about their
uses and showed us some beautiful artwork. Some
of us had a turn at playing the didgeridoo and
danced a traditional dance. Genevieve showed us an
artwork she made when she was seven that tells the
story of people coming together.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Since the last edition of the Tallong Year 5 and 6 participated in their senior excursion. It was a very full and busy
excursion and I wish to thank the students and the staff for their hard work in making it a very successful event. The
group was constantly being praised for their manners, their background knowledge and the fact that they were in
school uniform. To the parents, grandparents and family members who knitted or crocheted the poppies a very big
thank you. The students wore their poppies at the Australian War Memorial and we also presented the staff at the
Memorial who worked with our students a poppy in appreciation.
The next major excursion for our senior students will be the five day excursion to Berry Sport and Recreation Cen-
tre. The first of the notes concerning this activity will be issued next week; we are scheduled to be in Berry, Term 2,
May 2nd to 6th.
Road Safety has again in been in the spotlight for the school and its community. Following complaints from parents
about the actions of drivers in Thames Street another information campaign was put into action. This campaign in-
cluded a note sent home to all families, information was placed on the school app and in the Tallong and at a later
date banners displaying road safety messages from Wollongong City Council to be hung on the school fence. There
will be a continuation of the enforcement program by Wollongong City Council as well.
At the moment, the school is involved in the collection of data on its students for two different reasons and purpos-
es. The completion of the surveys is undertaken by the teaching staff and does not involve the students in additional
assessments or tasks. Information is included in newsletter on the National Consistent Collection of Data on Stu-
dents’ with Disability. In relation to the other data collection activity, information was specifically sent home to the
parents of students in Kindergarten on the Australian Early Development Census.
The students’ Semester One Reports are just about finished and notes are circulating from the class teacher in rela-
tion to parent teacher interviews. The reports are a review of the work the students have undertaken this semester
and points to consider for future direction. They take an extraordinary amount of time to compile and I would ask
that all parents sit down with their child and go through the report, discuss its content and then come along to the
parent teacher meeting to share, discuss and plan for the next semester.
The Australian Communication and Media Authority will be presenting a workshop on cyber safety through their
Cybersmart Program for parents at the school on Monday 22nd June, commencing at 4.30pm. This is a very im-
portant workshop for parents and I would strongly encourage all parents to attend.
Students from Years 3 to 6 will participate in their workshop after lunch and the staff straight after school.

Grip Leadership Two weeks ago, eight students from year five, accompanied by Mr Jones, attended the ‘GRIP Leadership Conference’ at the University of Wollongong. The program was named GRIP after these acts of leadership; Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity and People. As we arrived, a booklet was given to us full of activities. We also got a pen. When the conference started, two men called Mason and Andrew spoke to us about how we could become a leader. At the end of the day we had a chance to ask questions. The conference went for about 5 hours and it was a really helpful day. All the students enjoyed it, as
it was entertaining and funny. It was a great, helpful experience.
