Principal’s Report

Welcome to our first two weekly newsleter of the year (our last one was only aer one week!). I trust you will agree with me that publishing a newsleter every two weeks has enabled us to greatly improve the quality of informaon for you.

What an incredible pace we have set as we start the new year. So much is happening at Barellan Central School; there is something for everyone.

Student acvies

The student representave council (SRC) has started their regular meengs already, and there are some significant plans in place. Currently, the SRC is negoang with students on the reward system for whole school rewards consistent with our Posive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) model. I met with the SRC to discuss this, and they are now gathering informaon from their classes to report back to the whole group. The SRC is also looking at running clubs for student interest groups which will complement the newly formed dance group that is now running on Tuesday and Thursday lunch mes. Thank you Mrs Campbell!

RAP Inducon Camp

Congratulaons to stage 6 students and teachers who completed a highly successful RAP inducon camp in Yanco last Tuesday and Wednesday. Thank you in parcular to Ms Forner for accompanying the students overnight.

Sports acvies

Thank you to the students, families and staff for your tremendous support to run an outstanding swimming carnival. The weather was ominous as the lightning racked the skies, however, aer meeng with the brains trust and looking over radar, we decided to wait and the start of the carnival was delayed by approximately 45 minutes, but once it started it was brilliant. It was a wonderful showcase of the Barellan Central School

community, with parents readily involved helping with ming, judging, and parcipang in the parents’ swim team. Students showed a warm side, encouraging one another, with a parcularly lovely moment when Lilly Geltch jumped into the water to support Tamiah Kessey. These acts embody the school’s values of resilience and excellence. You can read more about the Swimming Carnival in the report in this issue of the gazete. I would like to extend my parcular thanks to Danae Conlan who coordinated the event. You did an outstanding job. Thank you!

On Friday Barellan hosted the RAP sports trials and we welcomed students from across the RAP schools (Ariah Park, Ardlethan, Barellan, Hillston, Lockhart and Oaklands) who trialled for a whole range of sports. I’m pleased to inform you that we have a number of coaches from Barellan supporng the sports teams across the Access Partnership. Thank you to Danae Conlan (Open Tennis), Will Flenley (Open Lawn Bowls and AFL) and Stuart Whytcross (Boys cricket).

Parent meengs

We have already had two parent meengs this year, with the P&C meeng on the Tuesday 5 February and the parent informaon aernoon on Monday 11 February.

At the P&C meeng, as always, we had a range of deep conversaons around the school and future acvies. A parcular conversaon arose in which we discussed parents’ awareness of the wonderful things that happen at Barellan. Consequently, we are going to start a ‘Did you know?’ queson and answer in each edion of the gazete which will highlight something parcularly wonderful about our school. Feel free to share these ‘did you know’ moments with others as we brag about our incredible school.

The P&C has also been working relessly on developing healthy canteen opons for our community. Please ensure you support the canteen by purchasing from them on Thursday/Friday, and making the most of the special days that they will run throughout the year.

At the parent informaon evening, we shared informaon about the excursions and events planned

this year, the reading program in K-2 and the assessment processes in secondary school. The SRC also spoke about their focus this year, and the P&C discussed the importance of contribung to the P&C to help parcipate in conversaons about the direcon of the school, and to assist with specific programs. Copies of the events for this year are included in the gazete. This should help families with early planning for events.

Communicaon plaorms

If you don’t currently follow our Facebook page, you might want to start doing so. We have improved the quanty and quality of informaon available on both the Facebook page and school website. We now have a documents secon where you can access important informaon such as assessment schedules, scope and sequences and whole school event schedules. We will be adding more documents too, including permission notes, school policies and metable informaon. If there is anything that you would like to know, please drop us a line or give us a call.

School upgrades

Not only are students and teachers buzzing in acvity, but we have a number of works taking place at school right now. We have had three maintenance tasks completed over the last two weeks. There has been painng throughout the school, on the Learning and Wellbeing Centre and in some classrooms. We have installed a new window in recepon to improve our service to visitors, and we have installed a new door in the 2/3/4 classroom to create a breakout small study space.

There are significant upgrades being assessed right now across the school, with a major visit from assets to assist evaluang the viability of these upgrades planned for the 28 February.

If you are interested in seeing some new technology, make an appointment with Mr Jeremy Campbell (AP, teacher 2/3/4) or Miss Krise Davis (K/1/2) to pop in to have a look at their classrooms. At the beginning of the year we installed whiteboard desks to improve student collaboraon. We have now received and installed a new MoCoW (mobile computer on wheels) in these two rooms. These screens can act as interacve boards, but can also rotate to become interacve desks where students can work on a digital surface.

Stage 4 Languages program

In an excing change, we are collaborang with Rural and Remote Educaon, and the NSW School of Languages to trial a new languages program in stage 4. Students will start a new study of Italian, which will be delivered by a specialist Italian teacher from the NSW School of Languages, using a variety of other plaorms

including iSee VC and a combinaon of Moodle/Canvas. This enables our students to access specialist language support, as well as start to familiarise themselves with online learning skills from an earlier age which will assist them in making the transion to their senior studies through RAP in the future. Danielle Ingram will connue to be their teacher, and your point of contact.

Thank you to Danielle for supporng such excing possibilies for our students.

Principal network meengs

We have already hosted two important network meengs this year at Barellan. The first meeng involved the Director, Educaonal Leadership and 3 other principals meeng at BCS for the South Eastern Hub network meeng, and the second was a RAP principal’s network meeng where we welcomed Grant Lloyd, the relieving principal at Ardlethan CS to our network. It is wonderful for our school to become the hub for such significant network meengs.

Have a lovely week, Paul Laing

Spotlight on 2/3/4

Year 2/3/4 made a model flower and bee out of a paper cup and pipe cleaners. They chose one powder paint colour to sprinkle on the anthers of their flower. The students played with the bees and flowers and noced the paint colours (pollen) moved from flower to flower on the pipe cleaner bees.

The bees went in a flower and got pollen and the bees took the pollen to another flower. If the female bees weren’t alive the big seeds wouldn’t be in any big seeds. The bees go to the base of the flower to get nectar. The anthers are the little things that are around the stamen. The sticky tape was very sticky and the pollen stuck to it, then the flower was pollinated. - Tamiah Kessey

The bees go to the flower and then they go to another and that’s called cross pollination. The bees go into the flower and go to the nectar that sticks to their legs. The female bee does the work. - Archie Elwin

Pollination is when a bee goes to a flower and goes down to the base of it to collect nectar by drinking the nectar. Cross pollination is when a bee goes to a flower and gets the nectar and the pollen sticks to their legs and when they land again on a different flower the pollen gets on that flower and that is what cross pollination is. - Xavier Irvin

RAP Preliminary Inducon Camp

On Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 February, year 11 students atending their RAP Inducon Camp at Yanco. Students had the pleasure of meeng their coordinang teachers face-to-face and mixing with their peers from Ariah Park Central School, Ardlethan Central School, Oaklands Central School, Lockhart Central School and Hillston Central School. They had rigorous study sessions during the day, but at night they were able to relax, coming together to play trivia against the teachers (who beat them, of course). It was a great opportunity to welcome year 11 to the RAP community, and comments were made by all staff and employees at the centre that the students conducted themselves excellently.

RAP Sports Trials

RAP Sports Trials were held at our school on Friday the 15th of February. Here are some photos from the lovely day.

This is an updated price list for our Canteen. This list will also be published on the website.

Parents and Cizens News

Our last meeting on 5 February was well attended, it was so nice to see some new faces and thank you for your input. -Mr Laing spoke about the Positive Behaviour for Learning signage that will soon be displayed throughout our school to help students to use the four school values at all times in every location in the school. -He also informed us that the frequent values reward system is under further discussion but will soon be introduced to the students. This will involve small coloured tickets, a different colour for each value, being given on the spot to students who display a school value. Students will place their tickets into a barrel, the tickets accumulate and result in rewards for the whole student group. The Student Representative Council are taking ideas from their class mates to determine what rewards they would value. -An accounting system will be purchased for the Uniform Co-ordinator, Tracey Gordon, to allow invoices to be generated. Tracey will notify when the uniform shop will be open. Please call Tracey and arrange a time to see her. -Ideas for Barellan Central School promotion were discussed. -Karen Smith, our Canteen Co-ordinator, reported on the progress of our Healthy Canteen. During 2019 we will endeavour to provide a menu in which 70% of the food is in the, everyday healthy range. Students were invited to taste test items from a Wagga supplier at the end of last year. Items which were popular will be included in the menu for this term. Each term we hope to run special healthy meal days in conjunction with events running in the school calendar. Karen is attending a Canteen meeting at Parkview Public School in Leeton on Wednesday 20 February from 3.15pm to 6pm to gain more knowledge on how to set up menus and to see our other schools are running and promoting their healthy canteen. If you would like to attend, please contact Karen. - The role of secretary of the Barellan Central School P&C has been declared vacant. Anyone who would be interested in this role please attend the AGM or indicate your availability to a P&C representative. - Thank you to Sue and Stuart Robertson who donated the proceeds from their Christmas lights collection to our P&C. Whoever left lollypops in the collection bin they were very much enjoyed, thank you. - The agenda for next meeting includes the P&C Bi-laws and the Code of Conduct.

Did you know….???

At Barellan we offer a broad and flexible curriculum patern for students? That means we have students in year 10 who have already started their senior studies, and they will then

be able to not only finish their HSC by the end of year 12 with the right to enter university, but they will also be able to student mulple VET courses if they want to. Students can also study mulple courses in one class. So while one student might be

studying Industrial Technology another may be studying Design and Technology, or one student studying PDHPE and another Sport, Lifestyle and Recreaon. We also offer a

broad curriculum, so students can study via video conference, at school face to face or via distance educaon. If you want to know more, speak with Mr Laing or Ms Forner when

choosing your subjects in secondary school!

Student Payments

Please place all student payments being received through the School Office: • in an envelope or zip lock bag • with the student’s name • with the permission slip (if applicable) and what the

money is for clearly marked on the front. If you would like a receipt, please indicate this with your payment. Parents/guardians are also reminded that payments for school activities/fees can be made through the Online Portal. This is accessed through the School Website under the ‘Make a Payment’ tab.
