Monday 18th May 2015 Term 2 Week 5 Orange class is focussing on the PBEL rules this term. We have been enjoying learning together, learning about life on a farm. We have been exploring how chickens and cows are used on farms. We have also enjoyed creating recipes using items that are made with milk and eggs. We have been learning together with Aqua class again, joining them on Friday afternoons to create craft linked with our farm theme. Everyone in Orange class knows how to be safe when we go walking in the community. We wear hats and sunscreen, stay with the group and stop, look and listen before we cross. Every Thursday, Orange class students have to be friendly with our Willoughby buddies and friends in White class. We play games, complete obstacle courses, bounce on the big balls and we all sat and watched the Lindfield band together with our buddies. Orange class is focussing on the PBEL rules this term. We have been enjoying learning together, learning

about life on a farm. We have been exploring how chickens and cows are used on farms. We have also

enjoyed creating recipes using items that are made with milk and eggs. We have been learning together

with Aqua class again, joining them on Friday afternoons to create craft linked with our farm theme.

Everyone in Orange class knows how to be safe when we go walking in the community. We wear hats

and sunscreen, stay with the group and stop, look and listen before we cross.

Every Thursday, Orange class students have to be friendly with our Willoughby buddies and friends in

White class. We play games, complete obstacle courses, bounce on the big balls and we all sat and

watched the Lindfield band together with our buddies.

A Message from our Principal Welcome to week five

As we approach the halfway mark of the term we are experiencing an increased

level of a range of viruses in both staff and students including varieties of influenza

and gastroenteritis. Please ensure the emergency contact numbers you have

provided the school are current and in use as if your child becomes unwell at school

we will contact you and request you collect them. It is the Department’s policy that

students who become unwell at school are best transferred to the care of a parent or caregiver. The aim

of care provided at school for such students is to make them comfortable in the interim. It is often difficult

to ascertain whether it is simply a cold or something more serious but if they are miserable at home they

will be even more miserable at school. The School A-Z website has information on a range of conditions

and whether or not students should remain home and for how long. It is just a reference guide and if the

illness persists or you are concerned you should consult your doctor. The website can be accessed by

following the link below.

The Reference guide “Too sick to go to school” has also been posted on our school website.

This week we feature Orange class and Aqua classes who are our middle and senior primary school

students. Along with our K-2 students they have been learning about farm animals and this week are going

to Calmsley Hill City Farm to see all the animals in a real farm context. Thank you to those parents who have

agreed to come along to assist their child on the day. I am sure it will be an enjoyable experience and we

look forward to the photos in next week’s newsletter.

A reminder to parents of our secondary students that the Post School Expo is on this Wednesday, 20 May at

the Concourse, Pavilion Room, 409 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood from 11:00am-6:00pm. I encourage you to

take the time to attend even if your child is not leaving school for a few years as it provides information to

enable you to make informed decisions when the time approaches.

As mentioned in previous weeks we continue to be on alert for head lice in NSW schools and we have

had evidence of this at Cromehurst last week. While head lice and nits, (the eggs of head lice) are

certainly annoying and persistent, they're not dangerous however they do spread very quickly. Please

check you children for evidence of eggs or lice as the eggs hatch very quickly and spread to everyone in

the family (please remember to check yourself as well). There are a range of preparations you can

purchase to deal with head lice and the School a to z website contains information on what you need to

know to rid your family of head lice and nits.

On Monday, 25th May all school photos will be taken.

If you have not already returned the pre-paid order form could you please do so by Friday, 22nd

May. If you do not intend to purchase any photos, please write ‘no photos required’ on the form

and return it so that we can be sure that no child misses having their individual photo taken.

Aqua Class has been having so much fun. The whole group loves their Special Olympics program on

Friday – learning to throw & catch, run and jump, walk and turn tight corners, use equipment such as

hockey sticks and practising for the Athletics Carnival later this term. Jordan has been getting up and

out of his chair during Special Olympics and he is now weaving through posts and throwing balls onto a

target.

Pulasthi and Ethan have both been doing fantastic desk work. Pulasthi is learning about Australian

Coins and is able to put them into sequential order. Ethan is working on his sentences and is able to

piece together a 4 worded sentence using a visual as a prompt.

During leisure time, the students are enjoying the iPads and the Interactive Whiteboard (IWB). Lizzie is

using the iPad to watch interactive stories. She will sit beautifully watching the screen and will smile

showing she is enjoying the story. Hamish loves the IWB and is extending his ability to concentrate on

non-preferred interactive activities for longer.

Another favourite activity for the whole class is swimming. Aqua class joins with Orange class to swim on

Tuesday mornings and each student has shown great improvements both with their ability to wait for

their turn and in the water. Lucy is now swimming with less flotation support and is balancing her body

in the water and she is also walking up and down the stairs to enter the pool.

All the students in the school participated in making a healthy Squash It Sandwich for Jamie Oli-

ver’s Food Revolution Day on Wednesday. The canteen students enjoyed creating a fun and in-

teresting salad, which they distributed around the classes for us all to put into our rolls. The stu-

dents from Pink class also helped by creating a delicious hummus to add flavour to our roll. Most

of the students had a taste and enjoyed the fresh taste of apple, carrot, sunflower seeds and oth-

er vegetables in the roll.

We raised approximately $70 for charity, which we will be giving to Nutrition Plus, a charity that

supports improving the health of Indigenous children. Thank you to all the families who donated.

Here are some photos of students

participating.
