Haere mai koutou, welcome everyone!
Welcome to Creative Spaces 2020, a conference for you – the managers, tutors, art workers and
supporters of a sector that inspires creative expression in diverse communities.
The creative spaces sector plays a vital role in reducing barriers to participation in the arts for
people, whatever their circumstances.
In December 2014, 43 respondents representing 48 community-based creative spaces responded to
Arts Access Aotearoa’s survey about future development and sustainability.
The survey respondents identified a strong need to connect in person with leaders and staff from
other creative spaces around the country. You also said you wanted to improve programme delivery
standards; strengthen business management capability; and enhance your ability to increase income
in a challenging environment.
So here we are, 14 months later, connecting in person to address these issues. Thanks to Creative
New Zealand for recognising the professional development needs of a sector that empowers people
to unleash their creativity and make art across a range of artforms.
Regional creative space representatives identified topics they wanted us to address at the
conference. You will see that several creative space staff are workshop leaders and everyone has the
opportunity to give a small presentation about their space, work or project. We’ll also be hearing
from specialists, who will inspire us to stay the course and help strengthen our capacity to deliver
the arts that we’re so passionate about.
Creative Spaces 2020 invites us to engage in strategic direction-setting. What will the sector look like
in four years’ time? And what do we need to do now and over the next four years to meet individual,
organisational and sector goals?
This time together is the opportunity to lay the groundwork and steps we can take collectively to
strengthen the creative spaces sector. Strategic advocacy that communicates the value of your work,
along with improved knowledge and skills, will help creative spaces and their artists thrive.

Creative spaces in New Zealand have diverse histories, management and development models. What they have in common are staff committed to the work and who love what they do. What can we do to sustain and develop our spaces so they can continue to service artists and communities? Richard will explore the results of two surveys Arts Access Aotearoa conducted with the sector. He is just back from a professional development visit to the United States, where he visited the Creative Growth Center in Oakland, California and AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island. What qualities do New Zealand’s creative spaces share with their US counterparts and what can we learn from overseas examples?

Kirsten Mason is the new General Manager of Orchestra Wellington. She left Wellington as a young graduate eager to see the world 18 years ago, and has lived and worked for arts organisations in six countries on three continents, bringing performances and musical experiences to communities as diverse as schoolchildren in inner-city Detroit, homeless communities across the UK and audiences in Shanghai, one of the world’s largest cities. Kirsten will share some stories about her own extremely non-linear career and what she has learned from it all.

Richard has been with Arts Access Aotearoa for five years. Previous roles include Cultural Affairs Specialist at the United States Embassy in Wellington; Manager of heritage icon Old St Paul’s; and an independent events and communications specialist. After completing a BEd degree from Victoria College Rusden (Melbourne), majoring in drama and English literature, Richard worked as a high school teacher and for Arts Access Victoria as an artist-in-residence in psychiatric hospitals. Kerri has worked in and for the community sector for 20 years but has lived and breathed community her whole life. Kerri has worked as a manager, a volunteer and a consultant, as well as spearheading several social enterprises that are still working today. Her passion lies with grassroots groups committed to making a difference, no matter how hard they have to work to make it happen. She is a MSD Approved Capability Mentor and regularly works with organisations one-on-one to help them to the next level.

Kim leads a creative arts and wellbeing initiative in Christchurch, focusing on the needs of people who are socially isolated, have mental illness and/or experience trauma as a result of the earthquakes. There are two creative spaces and a number of collaborative projects on the go. She draws on my experience as manager of King Street Artworks and a governance member of Vincents Art Workshop. A staunch advocate of the powerful role of participatory arts in post-earthquake Christchurch, she is passionate about how collaboration and partnerships can increase our impact. Toi Ora is a multi-disciplinary creative arts space, where Erwin has been for nine years. He’s had a diverse work life, studied in youth and community development in the performing arts and outdoor pursuits, and produced a community mental health radio programme on Planet FM. His passion is working with people and learning environments that can transform and inspire. He has spent most of the past 20 years in community mental health and the arts. Kirsten has recently joined the Orchestra Wellington team as General Manager. Before returning to New Zealand in May 2015, she set up and ran a New Zealand Music Festival in Shanghai for four years, which featured many of our best-loved Kiwi artists. She also toured many of these artists around China. Kirsten has also worked for the Chamber Music Society of Detroit for nine years, first as Development Director then as Development Consultant. She has held previous roles at UNESCO in Turin, Italy, and at Streetwise Opera, Arts & Business and PwC in London, Munich and Paris. Stephen joined Creative New Zealand in 1990 and was appointed Chief Executive in 2008. He has been involved in the strategic and business planning of Creative New Zealand for several years and has worked closely with many of this country’s leading arts organisations. Jacqui is responsible for delivering an Arts in Corrections advisory service to the Department of Corrections and the wider community. Fraser Carson Director Flightdec
Fraser is the creator of the Flightdec Communities concept and is a founding partner. His passions centre on innovation as an enabler, and openness and connectivity as pathways to transform communities. Flightdec describes itself as “bringing together internet technology with tried and tested marketing and communications”. The main areas of work are in community building and capacity building, especially through the use of new media technologies.

Iona McNaughton Communications Manager, Arts Access Aotearoa
Iona was a newspaper reporter and editor for 15 years. She is also a published children’s writer. She worked at Creative New Zealand from 1997 to 2004. In that time, she project managed most of their publications, as well as writing and editing them. These included a quarterly arts magazine, the annual report and strategic plans, several research reports, and a guide to marketing the arts. Iona project managed, co-wrote and edited two editions (2009 and 2014) of Arts For All, Arts Access Aotearoa’s guide to providing access the arts to disabled people.

Lize Immelman Freelance communications specialist
Lize is a journalist, video editor and communications specialist. Lize worked for Arts Access Aotearoa in 2015 for six months as communications specialist while Iona was on leave. Having completed a BA degree in film editing, she has been a video editor and producer for the past ten years working on a variety of projects, including documentaries, television and news in South Africa and New Zealand. She recently completed a Diploma in Journalism at Whitireia New Zealand.
