Abstract - One of the main issues with the different industries today is to manufacture products that help in elimination cost as well as works towards waste reduction. These and many other industries related problems had led to the formation of lean manufacturing, a method that was initially implemented by Toyota of Japan. However, there is very little, almost no research that is done on lean manufacturing in Malaysia and there is a lot of struggle that Malaysian manufacturing industry is facing in the implementation and sustenance of lean principles as well as policies. The present project research is an attempt to find the challenges or issues that Malaysian industries are facing in order to implement and successfully sustain the lean manufacturing processes. The researcher would try to investigate on the topic by taking mixed analysis method, where both primary and secondary researches would be conducted. This research would also take in the different principles and concepts in lean manufacturing and collate it with the primary findings. Overall, this study can be used as a benchmarking for successful lean manufacturing implementation in other developing countries.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Tenun Pahang Fabrics Using Alternative Yarns

E.L.Z Engku Mohd Suhaimi, J. Salleh2, S.A.A. Ghani, M.F. Yahya, M.R. Ahmad

Faculty of Applied Sciences, Universiti Teknologi Mara, 40450 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia

Abstract- An investigation on the properties of Tenun Pahang fabric performances using alternative yarns was conducted. The studies made in order to evaluate whether the Tenun Pahang fabric could be produced economically and at the same time maintain the fabric quality. Traditional Tenun Pahang fabric uses silk for both warp and weft. For this project, two alternative yarns were used, there were bamboo and modal, these yarns were a little lower in cost compared to silk. These yarns were woven with two variants, one with the yarns as weft only while maintaining the silk warp and the other with both warp and weft using using the alternative yarns. Four (4) physical testing and three (3) mechanical testing conducted on the fabric samples. These were evaluated including weight, thickness, thread density, crease recovery angle, stiffness and drapability. The results show that modal/silk and bamboo silk fabrics are comparable in terms of stiffness and drapability, hence they have the potential to replace 100% silk Tenun Pahang.

Abstract- The Lean appears to have numerous definitions while exploring the topic. The principles of Lean are just a compilation of methods and tools which are implemented in an organization to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. It is also true

that, the Lean principles mostly have undesirable outcomes. Sometimes, the organizations do not achieve the expected success which forces them to desert the Lean principles while at times they find it difficult to sustain the improvements, again making them forcefully conclude the Lean product development. These limitations or failures can be overcome by recognizing Lean principles not only as a set of tools but also as a value. This paper aims exclusively on effectively applying the Lean principles in the telecommunication sector to improve the product development activities. For the study, the secondary data was collected from various articles, journals, books and publications which are the works of various researchers and authors. The study also carried out a case study of 2 giant companies in the telecommunication sector, the Cisco and the Alcatel-Lucent. From the study it was observed that companies employing Lean have effectively improved their processes and services. Various impacts of the Lean principles were also encountered and the study also suggests certain strategies to overcome the impacts or limitations of the Lean principle implementation.

The Improvement of Geometrically Based 3-D Wave Scattering in MIMO OFDM Mobile Communication Systems

Suzi Seroja Sarnin, Siti Maisurah Sulong , Azlina Idris, Norsuzila Ya’acob

Faculty of Electrical Engineering,UiTM Shah Alam, 40000 Selangor, Malaysia

Abstract- The paper focuses on the signal cross correlation in 3D scattering MIMO channel. An improved geometrically-based 3-D wave scattering MIMO channel model is developed. The fading cross-correlation in vertically (ε=90°) and horizontally (ε=0°) separated antenna array at the MS was investigated in terms of the antenna element spacing, AoA distributions, and the angular spread of the arrival angle in the vertical plane. An extended geometrically-based MIMO channel model in 3-D wave scattering is developed and general formulas for joint spatial-temporal correlation, spatial correlation, and temporal correlations are derived and numerically evaluated. Then the effect of this correlation on MIMO channel capacity is investigated under assumption of uniform and Laplacian angular energy distributions and for uniform linear array (ULA) and uniform circular array (UCA) using MATLAB simulation environments.

Reducing the Power Envelope Fluctuation of OFDM Systems Using a Simplified Amplitude Clipping Approach

Dheyauldeen Najm Abdulameer, R. Badlishah Ahma

School of Computer and Communication Engineering (SCCE), University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Kuala Perlis, Kangar, Perlis, Malaysia

Ministry of Science and Technology, Iraq.

Abstract- A new and crucial modulation technique that is being developed, under the communication systems domain, is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). The signals from OFDM can not only fight multipath propagation and fading channels but also advocate huge rates of data. Nevertheless, OFDM too has its disadvantage as it is a multicarrier system and can face issues because of the demanded summation of sinusoids during the combination of the in-phase subcarriers, which in turn tends to produce high power peaks. The performance of the BER can be degraded by the big fluctuations in the power envelope called peak to average power ratio (PAPR), which causes in-band and out-band distortion. There are a plethora of methods to solve the problem posed by the PAPR that includes SLM – Selected Mapping, PTS- Partial Transmit Sequence and clipping of amplitude. The former two methods are very complex, whereas amplitude clipping is seen as a much simpler alternative for implementing real-time. This paper aims to provide an alteration to the technique of amplitude clipping, by presenting a fresh method named SAC - Simplified Amplitude Clipping. In the SAC method, extra bit of information is sent, in order to ensure that all of the clipped data is retrieved by the receiver. Furthermore, the SAC method is not complex and results from the simulations advocate the point that this technique is more adept than the original one. The size of the mean squared error vector stays the same when compared to the conventional unclipped signal, whereas the PAPR reduced by approximately 1.0dB. On the other hand, the ordinary clipping method makes a much larger magnitude of mean squared error vector.

Rizanaliah Kasim , Abdul Rahim Abdullah, Nur Asmiza Selamat, Nur Hazilina Bahari and Mohd Zulkifli Ramli

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Faculty of Electrical Egineering, Malacca,Malaysia

Abstract- Nowadays, energy storage improves the reliability and efficiency of electric utility system. The most common device used for storing electrical energy is battery. Obtaining an accurate data of battery parameter is important because it will be avoid unexpected system interruption and prevent permanent damage to the internal structure of the batteries. The objective of this study is to apply time-frequency distribution (TFD) which is spectrogram technique in analysis of voltage charging and discharging signal for lithium-ion battery. Spectrogram represents the battery signal in time frequency representation (TFR) which is appropriate to analyze the signal before displaying the instantaneous RMS voltage (Vrms), direct current voltage (VDC) and alternating current voltage (VAC) parameter value. This paper focuses on lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery with nominal voltage of 6 and 12V and various storage capacities from 5 to 50Ah. The battery model is implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK. From the results, the Li-ion battery parameter could be identified using spectrogram.

Hydrogen pressure analysis of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel cell by using Periodogram

Muhammad Zuhaili Bin Razali, Mohd Shahril Ahmad Khiar, Abdul Rahim Bin Abdullah, Wan Ahmad Najmi Wan Mohamed

Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Malacca, Malaysia.

Abstract- Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the renewable energy system that was recently highlighted by researchers. However, the improvement of PEMFC becomes complicated as there have been various parameters and characteristics from the Fuel Cell which have not yet to be discovered deeply. Identification analysis is required to monitor every factor that influences the performance characteristic of PEMFC. Thus, this review indicates that the research and analysis of PEMFC by using the Periodogram are still not widely explored. An experimental study has been performed to monitor a variety of hydrogen pressures acting as fuel at anode side of PEM Fuel cell by using Periodogram. This experiment has practically researched the various hydrogen (H2) pressures between 0.1 bars until 0.5 bars and the constant air flow at cathode side. It indicates that the voltage performance and amplitude from the Periodogram data of the PEMFC changed as the pressure of hydrogen at the anode side changed. Apart from that, the signal characteristic of direct current voltage (VDC), root means square voltage (VRMS), and alternating current voltage (VAC) also changed as the hydrogen pressure changed. Therefore, the relationship between the hydrogen pressures at the anode side towards the signal characteristic of PEMFC could be monitored by using Periodogram.

Surface investigations and study optical properties of Si and SiO2 substrates-coated with Poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA for high efficiency solar cells.

Nura Liman Chiromawa, Kamarulazizi Ibrahim

Nano-Optoelectronics Research & Technology Laboratory, School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia, 11800 Penang, Malaysia

Department of Physics, Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, P. M. B. 2218 Katsina, Nigeria

Abstract- In this paper, we study the optical properties, the surface roughness and the topography of Si and SiO2 substrates-coated with PMMA film layer using UV-Vis-NIR Spectrometer and atomic force microscope, AFM. The spectral analysis on the results obtained shows high absorption and low reflection of light on PMMA/Si, but low absorption and high reflection are observed on an uncoated Si. High transmission is recorded on PMMA/SiO2 in which more than 92 % transmission is recorded between 800mm and 1000mm. On the other hand, the results on the surface roughness obtained shows that the PMMA film layer reduces the root mean square roughness of both Si and SiO2 substrates, while plasma treatment on SiO2 increases its surface roughness.

Fabrication of GPS patch antennas based on microwave dielectric ceramics Zn(1-x)CoxAl2O4 thin film by sol gel method

Huda Abdullah, Wan Nasarudin Wan Jalal, Mohd Syafiq Zulfakar

Department of Electrical, Electronic and System Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia

Abstract- Background: The microwave dielectric properties of Zn(1-x)CoxAl2O4 thin films were examined with a view to their exploitation for GPS antenna. The Zn(1-x)CoxAl2O4 thin films were prepared by the sol gel method at 500 °C for 1 h. Co addition decreased the crystallite size and surface morphology of the resultant films, evidently affecting their density and dielectric constant (εr). Based on the material investigated and microwave antenna theory, GPS patch antennas were fabricated using Zn(1–x)CoxAl2O4 and then studied using a PNA series network analyzer. The measured results show that antennas had the return loss and impedance bandwidths of -16.6 to -20.3 dB and 75–180 MHz, respectively. The GPS patch antenna fabricated from Zn0.85Co0.15Al2O4 showed an excellent combination between the return loss (-20.3 dB), small in size (4.68 x 3.13 cm2) and wide bandwidth (180 MHz).

Abstract- Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) and zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) nanocrystalline structures dispersed into SiO2 matrix were prepared by sol-gel method. Phase formation of ZnAl2O4 and ZnFe2O4 was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The crystallite sizes was determine using Scherer’s equation from the broadening of dominant peak at (311) plane. It was found the crystallite size of both compound decreased due to the decrement compositions of Zn2+ ion and Al3+ / Fe3+ ions. The crystallite sizes for ZnAl2O4 and ZnFe2O4 was calculated to be around ~ 14.16 – 11.27 nm and ~ 11.27 – 4.72 nm, respectively. FTIR analysis was done to determine the formation of spinel structures. FTIR results analysis confirmed that the formation of spinel structure where it has been observed that the bands around 800 cm-1 was associated to the vibrations of aluminum-oxygen and metal-oxygen-aluminum bonds. This characteristic was identified to the formation of zinc aluminate spinel structure. The optical properties have been done to determine the energy bandgap of ZnAl2O4 and ZnFe2O4 samples. The Uv-Visible absorption spectra have been done within wavelength 300 – 800 nm and the graph was plotted into the Tauc plot. This new dielectric material was purposed to improve the value of dielectric permittivity with addition of SiO2 where it can be applied as microwave dielectric material without changing the original spinel structures.

Abstract- Background: Various nanostructured thin films on photoelectrodes have been utilised in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting process for solar hydrogen fuel conversion. However, the overall solar conversion efficiency is still relatively low and this could be due to the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers at molecular level. Objective: The main aim of this paper was to understand the effect of annealing temperature on the photogenerated charge transfer in nanostructured tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films synthesized via electrochemical deposition route. Results: Amorphous WO3 films were annealed between 100oC and 600oC. It was found using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) that both the charge-transfer and transport resistances decrease with increasing annealing temperature. Conclusion: This study concluded that a properly controlled annealing treatment is crucial in regulating the nanocrystals growth, which subsequently enhances the photogenerated charge transfer and solar conversion efficiency for sustainable hydrogen production from water splitting.

Department Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya

Abstract- Liposomes as effective drug delivery vehicles have played significant role in therapeutics. However physicochemical instability of liposomes reduces its possibilities and potentials to be used in drug delivery systems. The present work describes the stabilization of liposome via electrostatic deposition of a polycationic derivative of dextran which is Diethylaminoethyl Dextran (DEAE-Dx) on soy lecithin liposome. Liposomes were prepared by thin film hydration method. The critical vesicular concentration (CVC) of lecithin was found at 0.3 % (w/v) through surface tension analysis. Zeta potential was obtained to study the interaction between DEAE-Dx and liposomes. The zeta potential of liposomes changed from negative value to increasingly positive after addition of DEAE-Dx. This confirmed the coating of liposomes by DEAE-Dx. Stability of the DEAE-Dx liposome suspension was studied through particle size and zeta potential measurements over a period of 5 weeks. DEAE-Dx liposome suspension was found more stable than the uncoated liposomes suspension. The optimum concentration of DEAE-Dx was observed at 0.04% (w/v) compared to other examined concentration of DEAE-Dx. Interestingly, entrapment efficiency of coated liposome loaded with curcumin shows a higher value compared to the uncoated ones.

Abstract- Incredible innovation in the degree of biocompatibility and biodegradability regarding drug delivery carriers has revolutionized a breakthrough in the liposome formulations. These transporters loaded by either a drug or any other therapeutic agent, have unlocked horizons to investigate novel drug delivery systems (DDS). In a certain environment, an absolute control over their broad applications associated to both temporal and spatially controlled drug delivery offers potential capabilities in different clinical situations. Among all the cellular carriers including leukocytes, fibroblasts, islets, and hepatocytes, red blood cells (RBCs) offer several distinctive features. Incorporation of natural and artificial external stimuli even triggers the drug released profiles with more effective site-specific targeting. The present study underlines a discussion on such RBC carriers ( both natural and RBC mimics) which can evade body’s reticuloendothelial system (RES) overcoming many barriers such as size, shape, accelerated blood clearance, mechanical properties, control over particle characteristics, and surface chemistry. Bilayer membrane liposomes infusing phospholipids have long been synthesized to mimic bioconcave Red Blood Cell (RBC) carriers using the notion of stealth liposome. The present research aims to compare red blood cell as natural and synthetic carriers to accord with immune system as a game of hide and seek in a much promising manner. No wonder a lot is yet to be revealed on its worth in view of both in vitro and in vivo loom.

Abstract- Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes was synthesized by hydrothermal method and calcined at different temperature (300, 400, 500, 700°C) for 2 hours to study the effect of different calcination temperature on the physical properties and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes was studied. The anatase phase structure of the TiO2 nanotubes is remained even after calcination at highest temperature studied of 700 °C. However, their morphological structure transformed from nanotubes into nanoparticles after calcination at higher temperature. Hence, reduces the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 material in degrading methyl orange due to the decreases in surface area and porosity of the materials.

Abstract- Management today‟s world is about management in times of rapid change. The need to develop better leadership styles is becoming increasingly important in all organizations. The purpose of this work is to ascertain if there is a relationship between the leadership styles and the employees‟ performance, particularly in the Telecom Engineering companies, meanwhile to determine the relationships between leadership styles and employees' job performance through the mediators: employees' motivation, job‟s satisfaction; whether these relationships will be stronger for Transformational than for Transactional leaders, Laissez-Faire leaders or Servant leaders. This project reviews as well four recent and widely utilized leadership styles: transformational leadership, servant leadership, transactional leadership, and Laissez-faire leadership. There is a lack of total agreement in the reviewed literature as to the best leadership style to be used. Transformational theory is considered by many to be an improvement to the transactional theory of leadership. There appears to be an ever increasing number of studies supporting the benefits of the transformational theory. In today‟s ever changing climate, there are some researchers whose findings suggest the optimal leadership style may be a blend of Servant, transactional and transformational styles. Quantitative research method would be practice in this research. The questionnaires will be distributed only to employees in the Telecom Engineering companies. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and SPSS are approach which will be used as a tool to analyze the results in future in this research, due to the complexity of the model and the limitation of multi dimension analysis tools in quantitative research such as multiple regressions, factor analysis, and discriminant analysis. A proposed theoretical framework of this work has been decorticated in this paper.

A Proposed Regulatory Framework for Islamic Microfinance Model: Lesson from IFSA 2013

Ibraheem Musa Tijani

Research Officer at the International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA)

Abstract-Microfinance is an important mechanism to tackle poverty in current global society. The gap between the rich and poor is getting wider and wider. However, the method of ensuring a stable and functional microfinance institution is debated among academicians and policy makers. Some of taken the lending approach, while other might argue for the systematic approach, here the paper argue for a legal regulatory approach. The main idea is that the risk that conventional microfinance faces due to lack of regulatory framework is the same risk that Islamic microfinance will face, hence the need for an Islamic microfinance regulatory system. It is only through such system would the Islamic microfinance be able to develop at a sustainable pattern and be in line with Shariah. The suggestion here is to use IFSA 2013 as model in crafting a regulatory framework for Islamic microfinance due to its uniqueness and bindingness as the governing law for all Islamic financial institutions in Malaysia and it being developed under the Shariah governance supervision. From such model, its clauses can be redrafted to suit the complexities of Islamic microfinance system and its development.
